I played the original mafia some months ago, and by playing the remake I can just say that its great. The way ut feels, the atmosphere, cars, and story are just fantastic. Yeah I've seen a lot of people critisising mafia because its more casual than the original one, or people saying that they are quitting game because of that race, I've seen people critisizing the remake for its story changes and etc.. but lets be more rational, compared to new pay to win or 1000 hours online games, or left wing propagandistic games, and games without any esthetic sense, mafia remake is just fantastic. The gameplay, and by this i mean shootings, driving and etc... doesn' make you be bored. Story changes are logical and make story more inteeesting. Saras romance is now more clear, and because of new graphics, the game is looking more cinematic and more dramatic. I love this game, especially when I've seen the updated ending, that's looking more emotional. The games is really great, and after I ended the orginal one, I can truly say that people saying that the original is way beter, I surely just missing the good old games, but the gaming industry is changing. I also miss the good old days of ps2, but i admit the fact that like any other media branch, gaming is in cinstant developpement. Mafia definitive edition ans RE 2 remake are by far my favourite remakes, an mafia definiive edition truly deserves a nomination at game awards. Expand

Nearly perfect. I finished the game after around 14 hours (560 achievement points), and only played very little free drive (hidden cars unlocked).

    story

Everything I want to see in a Mafia game (conflict, violence, brutality, networking, etc.). The story is perfect for me, even if there were predictable moments, especially for mafia connoisseurs. But the entire story presentation in all of its cut scenes, the characters and the course are phenomenally good. The many references to Goodfellas, Pate and co. let you enjoy joyfully, two examples in the spoiler.

spoiler: corleone Hotel or Joe Pesci FunnyGuy Scene.

The story about Tommy is simply a successful mafia story.

    graphic

Hangar13 did a really good job on this remake. It looks really fabulous. At the end of the story, I jumped straight into the free ride and looked at the entire map, it's done well. The individual scenes look nice, as do the character models and everything around them. The only thing that bothered me a little was the eyelashes: D, which is only a minor thing.

    Gameplay

First of all, I didn't play in classic mode and without aiming aids. The level of difficulty (medium) was appropriate, I would have only wished that cops could be shaken off a little more difficult. Regarding combat gameplay, I have to say that this is my only weakness. The shooting and especially the close combat do not seem as smooth as the rest, here it might have needed a little more time, also to e.g. the cover mechanisms mature further (in particular the cover change is implemented too half-baked).

It would have been nice to make the open world somewhat interactive in free travel mode, e.g. Activities or the like.

A great trump card is the variety of different missions within the story. Everything feels different but also completely harmonious, boredom never arises here.

The collectibles have great pictures / comics, etc. (I have to look for some) and some great hidden cars. Unfortunately I didn't unlock the achievement for 30 carts, quite difficult to find out which ones are still missing.

    Conclusion

A fantastic remake for me that I hope many others will play. Anyone who is only approximately interested in the topic, knows the predecessor or is up for a good story again should strike. Only in combat would they have had to go a step further to make it absolutely smooth. 9/10 offers you can't refuse.

-On an Xbox One S you will experience some frame rate drops. Again, not an issue if you're in this for something more than amazing graphics @ 75fps
-Controls can be slightly clunky. You do get used to them and the game is perfectly playable and enjoyable, although it might not be the best experience of your life regarding this matter.

    The good:

    -Atmosphere is ace
-If you played the original one when it came out, you will love the way everything has been remade in a more modern way but keeping that essence that made the first game awesome.
-Acting - out of this world. I genuinely don't understand that some people have criticisedthe acting and/or the story. They are impeccable, period. Characters are even better than in the original game. Absolutely awesome.
-Most of the basic features that the first game was missing are here, like being able to cover or a better melee combat.

Overall, fantastic game. I might not pay £35 for it, but if you find it on offer don't hesitate. Is it perfect? No it isn't, but how many games are?

Now, is it a very enjoyable experience (specially if you have nostalgia on your side) and potentially one of the best games I've ever played regarding directing and acting? Absolutely!

There was obviously a lot of love and effort poured into this remake. From the ground up everything was redone, with the exception of the core story. The Voice acting is on point, and the writing seals the deal. The entire game was always an homage to the 30's crime noir, and gangster fiction. The game does an incredible job immersing you into Tommy's life durring his run with Don Salieri's Family. The two radio stations help drive the feel of the time, more in the talking and adverts than the music, but I can't deny that the music is also on point! Nothing quite like getting chased and shot at while some good swing music adds to the discord of the situation. I've always been a fan of that eras cars, and they did an incredible job embodying the look and feel of that periods automobiles. I've seen a few remakes over the last few years, but few have made such an impressive change as Hangar 13 and 2k Games pulled off. If you were a fan of any part of the series, this is a MUST HAVE. Even though the game shows it's age, like facial expressions are not as we used to see in 2020, it's still got that magic which kept me in front of my PC for hours 18 years ago. Expand

The melee combat was really simple and fun in the original, now it's stupid with bad transitions of the animation with finishing moves... it really looks bad. The cover system is okay but not really needed in my opinion. They've redone the voice-acting and the main character now sounds dull to me and the guy that stutters isn't that convincing anymore... the original story/plot was simpler and I prefer that one.

It also annoys me that the game doesn't continue exactly at the place where the cutscene ended. The original did this and driving back from a mission is now missing too...

Sadly they broke a good game. Stay away from this one, my advice: play the original on PC.

I finished the main story in around 12 hours, which is relatively short compared to many modern games (something which I personally think is a nice change, games don't need to be 20+ hours). There is also a free ride mode, where you can drive around in the open world and find some secret cars and collectables. I would recommend this game to those who played the original and will get the same wonderful nostalgia I felt during my play through. I would also recommend it to those who didn't, who will get to experience the story for the first time. 10/10

I remember playing the original version as a kid and I thought it was a really cool game but I was always stuck on the mission to burn and destroy the cars (yes, right at the beginning of the game lol) and so I never managed to finish it, but this time I did it.

Positive points: Story (very good, I'd say it would be comparable to the "Godfather" of games but I'm a big fan of the
I remember playing the original version as a kid and I thought it was a really cool game but I was always stuck on the mission to burn and destroy the cars (yes, right at the beginning of the game lol) and so I never managed to finish it, but this time I did it.

    Positive points:

Story (very good, I'd say it would be comparable to the "Godfather" of games but I'm a big fan of the mafia theme, so such a claim might be biased)

Graphics (they are very beautiful, especially the city at night)

Immersion (I felt very immersed in the game but maybe it was something personal, I even respected the traffic rules)

    Soundtrack

Characters (I really liked them, felt like a sibling with Paulie and Sam, Don Salieri who passed the weight of being an authority figure and Sarah who had great chemistry with Tommy)

End of story (it's a nice plot twist, unfortunately I already knew about this plot accidentally, but it's still amazing)

    Negative points:

Bugs (I played this game close to launch and there were bugs that bothered me, like melee combat that sometimes looked clumsy)

Empty open world (although very beautiful, it is lifeless and I consider this a terrible mistake, it would have a lot of potential for exploration with secondary activities, side missions and maybe even an online game mode but...)

So, for those who are a fan of mafia theme, this is a game that cannot be ignored, it is really worth it.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a must-play for any fan of the franchise. Although it doesn't quite have the narrative cohesion of Mafia II, it still offers a memorable and gripping story that's set in a gorgeous virtual adaptation of 1930s America.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is how a remake should be done. By taking and meticulously remoulding the original game, Mafia: Definitive Edition sings with a deliciously authentic 1930’s gangster shooter experience that’s enriched to no end by a chapter-based story that keeps the focus on the story and its characters. The aiming and target reticule aren’t ideal, and the Free Ride mode is a missed opportunity, but when the smoke clears and all you want is a classy hard-boiled gangster shooter there are few better options available.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is the perfect game for those who loved the original work of Illusion Softworks back in 2002. A travel back to Lost Heaven that should be mandatory to meet Tommy, Paulie, Don Salieri and many others from a current and much fresher perspective. With more polished gameplay, a spectacular city perfectly set in those thirties and an identical plot, but with slight modifications that make the script grow in quality. The graphics element is just spectacular.
