I put 18.5 hours into the game on the first day. I find the mechanic of the game being about the car to be -perfect- for Mad Max. The need to fuel the car, drink (a nifty way around a timed hydration mechanic) & eat to heal, and limited ammunition are all in keeping the with Mad Max Universe.

The roads are and areas are sprawling and there is genuine incentive to clear areas. The tasks can be repetitious but show me a game that doesn't have repetition. I just make sure I don't do the same things back to back and when one specific type of task becomes tiresome -cough- minefields- cough I do something else. Getting Jeet's stronghold upgraded along with upgrading my ammo capacity and melee abilities made the game less threatening. The Havok engine is on display here with fighting I would argue is better than Arkaham.

Is it game of the year? No. Its not as good as Witcher 3 but IS better than Arkham Knight. If you enjoy sprawling sandboxes or post apoc games this is up your alley. If you are looking for Forza in the desert or something casual stay away.

If you ever said "man I wish I had a car" while playing FO3/FONV this is your game.

I'll admit that this game has some control issues that people can find annoying. Too many actions are bound to the A button while Y and LT are given single uses. Voice acting is hit-and-miss but Max & Chumbucket are both done well. Chumbucket is a great side-character!

The quest lines are designed to make you explore the world- you cannot just mainline the campaign and then play around in the sandbox afterwards.

The lighting and weather and sky are unfathomably gorgeous, as is the expanse of landscapes that unfold before you.
From a world design perspective, the thought and detail here really shine. The diversity between regions is satisfying while maintaining some dignified subtlety, and makes sense and has world-building reasoning behind it (for example, the ancient sea bed that is the southern half of the map has a chalky white craggy area that was once a coral reef; a jagged LV426-style hellscape that was once an underwater volcano; a wind farm area dotted by the skeletons of old harbour turbines; a sulfur-rich yellowy area aptly named "reek hills"; etc). Really, the game and all of its strengths can be summed up in one word: "setting".
Gameplay-wise, the vehicular combat is extremely gratifying, especially once you get some much-needed upgrades. The hand-to-hand is typical Arkham fare, but nice and crunchy. Capturing various camps and outposts is diverse enough to be entertaining, and it's enjoyable to build projects in the various strongholds and see their interiors become more built-up and populated as a result. There are miles and miles of upgrades you can install on your car, and on Max himself, to benefit the vehicular and hand-to-hand aspects respectively, and they're pleasing to grind down.
To be fair, it's not all sand and sunshine; here are some admitted rough points:
    - It's not very story-driven, no weighty overarching narrative to connect the bits. To enjoy it, you have to be a fan of the setting and/or of typical open-world-style travails.
    - It's not very original; I could identify a specific game or series as the source of any particular gameplay element. They're brought together and executed well, but strictly speaking there's nothing *new* here.
    - The script falls a little flat, as does some voice acting of unnamed unimportant intel wastelanders.
    - There is the occasional (though usually hilarious) bug, and the framerate occasionally goes to pieces (quitting the game from the xbox tile and launching it again made this go away for me both times it became a problem, so I'm guessing it's a memory leak. I had the same problem with Witcher 3 though, so it's in good company?)
    - F**k the Death Run racing. Stab the Death Run racing right between the eyes. Because the cars they give you for them handle like they're on ice covered in oil, particularly when you're used to driving your Opus with fully upgraded suspension and tires, and it's insanely frustrating (especially because there's no "restart race" functionality, so once you've spun out and missed a barrel gate or two, and can't possibly catch up to the lead car, you can't abort and have to keep racing anyway like a chump or just let the clock run down. You can't even fast travel away. This is a very bad choice/omission, and I hope they add a "restart" or at least "abort" menu option in a future patch or I can't see myself doing much of any of the races.)
    - Oh yeah, I almost forgot: minefields. Minefields are the other stupid thing. You can't fast travel to a point near them, you have to drive all the way there from a stronghold, and then you have to listen to the dog bark annoyingly while you drive around at a crawl so that you don't accidentally roll over said mine. And you can't avoid/ignore them like you can the Death Runs, because their presence contributes to region threat, so if you want to zero that out you HAVE to clear the mines. And their general locations don't get revealed when you survey the region in the balloon, so you have to go out driving around aimlessly to even find the spot to come back with the dog and buggy. Lame. Lame lame lame.

Mad Max; a sixth generation legacy of car battles, looting, and fighting. However, this legacy is too few and far between. The car battles are not necessarily rare, but less of a challenge than one would want to expect, and the rewards are repetitive and a little insulting, especially when you find yourself constantly having to pull over and let a mutated psychopath fix your ride before continuing on your quest to take down multiple vehicles.
The looting and fighting are definitely rare, and far too easy to find. Nothing seemed to speak out to me saying "Whoa! This is amazing, or no way! That was awesome!"- It never happened. And now you're probably wondering why I give this game an eight out of ten. It's because despite its emptiness, lack of depth, lack of difficulty, and lack of reason, Mad Max still manages to pull me in and make me feel like a true road warrior. Through all the explosions and over-lengthy sandstorms, I had fun. That isn't something you can say about every video game you've played. It had value. It has great action and FUN tracking down all of the metal parts, insignias, historical artifacts, and ammunition. It may not be so entertaining the second time around, but it is certainly a must-have title, and I look forward to a sequel with improvements!

This was a day 1 impulse buy do to being a Mad Max fan. Right off the past I was impressed with the graphics and that was one of the main reasons I upgraded to an Xbox One. The graphics on this game set the new standard for visual beauty on the XB1. The landscape looks amazing, highly detailed, and it is pure joy to drive around in the Magnum Opus exploring.
Upgrading the car and upgrading Max are standard fare done better then most. As with most open world games yes this one does get a bit repetitive but there is enough variety in the combat and scenarios to keep you engaged.
The car combat stands out as something I haven't seen in a video game for a long time. The car battles are fun, there are a variety of techniques and weapons to use to win the car battles also.
The game is solid, it does bite off of a lot of other games but if you enjoy Max, and you want a solid game that is a blast to play you cannot go wrong with this one.

This game is outstanding and with an interesting story to back up the fun gameplay, I have been hooked ever since I got it. I definitely recommend this game to anyone.

Great game, certainly worth buying. Game of the year? Probably not. But fun and will give you your monies worth? Absolutely! Currently the only game I own that people are queuing to play at my house.

    Pros:

Open world. (Much more area to drive than most car games)
    RPG
Car Racing with Mad Max car on car destruction.
Shooting, Knifes, Arkham style fighting. Harpoon that can pull guys out of cars, rip tires off etc.
    Customized cars
Capture and use enemy cars and add them to your collection.
Build bases and bonuses by collecting scrap (which can make your life super easy)
Leveling up system that allows you to choose how you level.
Some customization of your Mad Max character's looks.
They give free new cars and content.
If you compete for times online you could win a real off road vehicle. Ends in September though.

    Cons:

The first hour is rough as it reveals the games weaknesses. Like it's movement (as awkward as the new Metal Gear) and it's needing to be in a specific spot to use certain skills. Or multiple skills on the same buttons, which can cause you to accidentally waste rounds. But once you get through this "tutorial" stage and get to Jeet's base, it truly starts becoming an open world game and starts shining. In fact the more you play the more addictive it seems to get.

I do wish there was more customization of the Max Character, leveling up, and the Car. But that can easily be added in future patches.

I also wish I could jump on enemy cars and attack like they do me sometimes.

    Indifferent:

People say the scrap gathering and other mechanics can become old fast. I can only say they didn't play the game long enough. As once you build up stuff in the Fortresses you get a free health filler, free water refill, free gas refill, free ammo refill, NPC's who gather scrap for you (even while your offline). This scrap is on top of the free scrap you get from liberating enemy bases.

Some say it's just the same thing over and over. Well that's true of any game. But in this game you can choose to change what your doing and fight, race, crash up derby, build bases, customize cars and do many different things over and over in a free roaming open world.

This and Witcher 3 are probably the best open world games out there for XB1, until Fallout 4 comes out.

This has been very enjoyable, and better than some of the reviews give credit. Yes the combat (Batman) is easy, yet one tricky racing quest (main story) has effectively halted my game progress. For all that, I like it, yes there is repetition, no it's not one of 2015's giant games, but it's fun, particularly if you enjoy the Mad Max universe.

Mad Max is excellent. When i went to GAME on Tuesday, i wasn't sure if i would walk out with that or Metal Gear Solid V, but about eight hours in, i couldn't be more happy with my choice.

The gameworld is key in these sorts of sandbox-style games, and they did a remarkably good job of giving each individual segment of what is essentially a really big desert a unique look and feel. Tar pits bubble in one area, while another is littered with shipping containers and other vestments of a time when oceans had water.

They also did a remarkable job of making each instance of the myriad open-world activities feel similarly fresh. Each enemy camp is unique and offers various approaches of attack, and even the dozens of 'scavenging locations' each look as though they have a story behind them. I encountered a throne made of whale bone, the rigging of an old ship shooting out of the sand, and an old petrol station converted for more cannibalistic activities.

The Wasteland looks great and feels lived in, an effect aided by the way enemy convoys kick up huge clouds of dust that constantly move over the horizon. In the same way that the Bat-symbol was used to mark an area of interest in the later Arkham games, pillars of smoke indicate a location worth checking here. It's nice to not have to rely on a mini-map, and as you complete more activities the smoke clears - leaving a more peaceful-looking wasteland. This is a very cool visual reward.

The side-stuff can get a bit tedious in these sorts of games. It did for me in the Witcher III after reaching Skellige and plundering the eighth shipwreck and receiving nothing worth having, but in Mad Max, if you scout an area with your binoculars, it will tell you if it houses a collectible or an upgrade, so you can be more choosey and ignore what you don't feel you need. Upgrades also work tremendously well.

There are so many different ways to customise Max, his ride, and the various friendly settlements that all have an impact not just on how they perform and which bonuses you receive, but also the actual look, which releases all the right happy chemicals in my brain. There is a definitive sense of reward which is lacking in a lot of other open-world games.

The game also offers one of the better takes on Rocksteady's freeflow combat. Unlike in Batman, where the camera widens to offer a better view of the battlefield, it narrows. This means that it's quite easy for an enemy not in your field of view to attack you, and you can't counter what you can't see. It makes fighting feel more like a brawl, than a man trained to physical perfection kicking the crap out of career criminals who never got past the first rung of the ladder. This is of course accentuated by his more brutal and clumsy moveset, but it's another clever presentational trick.

The story is decent, but aided tremendously by a colourful cast of characters who help to add a little purpose to the making things explode, ramming other things with a car covered in spikes, and brutalising minions.

The camera angles are the worst. When driving and it's a MAJOR portion of the game, the camera has a mind of it's own. When you need to look forward, the camera thinks you need to look at the left rear corner panel or off to the side somewhere. This also applies to hand to hand combat. You lose sight of some enemies, only to be blindsided by a sucker punch from an enemy you cannot see 3. Cars just disappear. You need to take enemy cars back to a safehouse to add them to your collection. I've left a car to drive another one and came back and it's gone. Where did it go? I also had one disappear on me while i was running to get into it. 4. Inconsistencies all around. Sometimes Max can fall off a significant mountain top and just tumble and roll with no death, other times Max can fall off a 6ft ledge onto soft desert sand and be dead. 5. Repetitive. Same tasks over and over drive here, get this, pick up scrap, race and repeat. Dialog is also repetitive..everytime Max gets out of the Magnum Opus, he has to tell Chumbucket to stay with the car. And why do we fear the mighty duster so much? It does NOTHING. 6. Archangels. The serve absolutely NO purpose. You can pick your own car body and with scrap and leveling up, can make your car better, faster and stronger than any stupid Archangel. Rage was so much better, which this game sort of reminds me of. All i can say is this game looks and plays great. I love playing the role of max, wandering the wastelands for scraps. The vehicle upgrades and vehicle combat are very well done. It can be a bit repetitve but theres enough going on to always keep you entertained.

My only minor gripe is that i wish the combat system was a bit more complex. Even so, the combat feels sick and bloody and raw. Even better than the arkham combat.

This game is a sleeper hit for me. I love mad max but didnt know much about the game but I took the plunge.

This game might not be complex, or have a gripping story, but it is pure fun. To me that is the most important thing.

"Mad Max" is set in the same universe as the great "Mad Max: Fury Road". That was a surprise to me. Another surprise is that it's better than most critics would have you think it is. The gameplay is similar to both "Shadow of Mordor" and "Batman: Arkham Knight" which also bear the Warner Bros. label. "Mad Max" isn't as good as either of those acclaimed titles, but it's a solid video game debut for the titular character. Avalanche Studios, developer of "Just Cause 2", have created an open-world with plenty to discover and do. While the post-apocalyptic wasteland isn't very interesting, the game itself is never boring due to the various missions, side-activities, collectibles, customization options and numerous upgrades you can purchase.

The game features a melee combat system similar to "Shadow" and "Batman", but with a more sluggish feel. Punches, kicks and weapon swings seem to have more weight than in those previous games. As Max, you'll spend plenty of time collecting scrap, filling up your water canteen and finding photos of the past. It's very much in the vein of Sony's "The Last of Us". In addition to upgrading your own car, the Magnum Opus, you can also collect plenty of vehicles be either stealing them or building them up. Max can also be upgraded in many ways and taking out the various outposts is always fun since they can be tackled in a few different ways. Releasing air-balloons (which adds activities to the map) never does get tiresome due to the various puzzle-like challenges.

Overall, "Mad Max" isn't a revolutionary game by any means. It doesn't evolve the genre in any big way and it can get repetitive after awhile. But if loved the summer's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Batman: Arkham Knight", then you'll have a good time with this one. 7.5 out of 10.

It does have it's flaws - audio is a bit laggy, some of the character models feature a rogue glitchy-looking animation here and there, combat isn't overly challenging and the missions can feel repetitive from time to time.

That said, these flaws are forgiven by a BEAUTIFUL environment, incredible music and SFX, and exhilarating gameplay which includes seamless transitions between vehicle combat and human combat. There's something to be said for a game whose sound effects can pump you up... reving up the engine of the Magnum Opus for the first time is an incredible feeling, and each upgrade you through onto your blossoming rig adds a level of satisfaction for progression-driven games like this that's rare to find any more.

If you loved Fury Road, or if anything I said above is interesting to you, stop reading these reviews and go try the game. It's a game that essentially went from not being on my radar to one of my favorite games on XB1 within the first 10 minutes of playing the game.

The story definitely feels like a Mad Max movie and a lot of the set pieces are pretty rad, but I can't help but feel that this game is bogged down with a lot more content than it needs without fully utilizing any of it to its fullest.

The map is nice and big with lots of areas to search for scrap which is used as currency in the wasteland. Taking over camps isn't just fun but very beneficial for getting scrap and upgrading the Magnum Opus and Max. Taking over camps isn't just a drive in and kill everyone, intel can be gathered to find a more subtle way into the camp making it easier to take over.

The fighting system isn't at all like Batman. That being said doesn't make it bad - I found it quite refreshing not having to fight like Batman again this year. The combos are deadly and using a shotgun in the middle of a combo is a blast. There are a lot of weapons lying around that can be used during combat.

I'll probably try and get the 1000 GS, seeing that it's an awesome game with hours and hours of side quests.

There are good customizations too and honestly, the game worth the try. I joke, but that’s essentially what this game is.
You start the game losing your precious black on black, and it’s up to you, because who else is gonna help you?
    To get it back.
Maybe a hunchback with magical black fingers will help since he believes you’re essentially the Dragonborn.
You set out on your journey for redemption with the entire world full of scrap metal at your disposal.
Having to live off of small water pumps, maggots, lizards, and dog food.
Offering yourself to stronghold leaders in return of some help to continue your quest.
Mad Max is a massive open world with well over 50 hours of content.
The good or the bad is that this massive world is just that.. a massive world that stays the same, keeps the same rules from beginning all the way til the end.
By the rules of the game staying the same since the start, the world feels even more as one,
you’re introduced to everything that the game is going to throw at you very early on
but the downside of this is that it’s easy to feel repetitive…. After a while you’ll realize, wait a minute…
No matter what I do, I’m really just going to location after location and picking up its collectibles and killing all of the bad guys there and doing it over and over and over until the credits roll.
A side mission, a main mission, scavenge locations, it doesn’t matter, it’s the same thing.. collect scrap, kill everything there.
Luckily though, you have to really concentrate on the repetitiveness to notice it, because while the world of mad max is one giant collectathon, the locations are surprisingly unique considering the game takes place in a desert.
I actually loved exploring the open world, it never felt to me like the design team got lazy.
If you stop to just soak in your surroundings, you may actually find them to be quite beautiful.
Even the devastation and destruction is beautiful.
Without warning you’ll see a dark cloud approaching you, and you know you have to find shelter fast,
The skies are about to get dark, the wind is about to pick up, and lighting is going strike the ground around you.
The storms are terrifying, but bring so much excitement to the game, really adding a layer of immersion to an already super immersive game.
After a storm has passed you can set out into the world to find scrap crates it blew around or get back to looting.
While this really is just a game about map cleaning like assassins creed has become, there is reason to the mad maxness.
The scrap is used for upgrades.
You get scraps from exploding enemy cars, from scavenging, upgrading strongholds, and constantly like a bank system by claiming enemy camps, which is done by clearing them of their leader, fighters, or by destroying their pumps or tanks inside.
You can freely upgrade max, your weapons, or your car as you level up and decrease the threat in each territory.
You decrease threat by eliminating snipers, claiming camps, pulling down scarecrows, taking out convoys, and defusing landmines.
and You level up by completing combat, environmental, and car based challenges.
Leveling up really happens for the most part naturally.
Car combat is surprisingly fun, you can rip off doors, tires, explode tanks, or just ram into opponents until they explode or run away.
Hand to hand combat is a less satisfying version of the arkham games.
Mad max on foot and in combat feels very stiff. So think skyrim in 3rd person but with batman style prompts. The camera doesn’t pull out like in batman, which can lead to some hits that feel pretty cheap since the enemy is off camera.
enemies do die quickly in hand to hand, so weapons aren’t all too necessary outside of completing challenges and luckily neither is your shotgun.
And I say luckily because you can only hold 2 shotgun shells with you in the beginning until you upgrade yourself to being able to carry a whopping 7
Making the shotgun really only useful for hard to reach collectibles.
But then there’s the racing, the sections that if you’re like me you’re not going to enjoy even a little.
They’re cheap, luck based, physics don’t exist, your car seemingly has no weight, and handling in this game sucks, there’s a particular spot in the game where you die almost instantly from the never ending enemy cars in this quote unquote race that seem to do nothing but hinder you and are given a laughable 6 minute time limit to try and take out a larger truck.
And for some reason when you’re about to deal the killing blow, you will start locking on enemies behind you instead.
Mad Max breaks in the spots it needs to work most.
The racing in general and this section sprinkled into the main story really ruin what otherwise is a decently fun and relaxing experience.
It becomes a frustratingly cheap ps2 era time trial out of nowhere.
Luckily races are optional…but the one I had issue with the most unfortunately isn’t
While mad max stays the same game from hour 1 until hour 80, you’ll find yourself enjoying every second lost in this desert world claiming it for your own as you set out for a bit of revenge.
The racing sections though, not so much.

There are a lot of collectables for those who love getting a 100% on games.

What I disliked was the fact that Max can't move around to shoot, you just stand still and fire,
Also max can't jump onto things that aren't color coded, so theres a wall that is approximately his height but can't jump onto it unless its painted yellow.

These small issues can be annoying but doesn't take anything away from the game whatsoever.
During my time of play i did experience some frame rate drops but it only happened once.

Driving is really the main part of this game and they've totally messed it up - not only are you fighting the cars delay in responding to your input, but you're also fighting trying to keep the camera angle behind the car where it should be.

There needs to be an option to lock the camera angle.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is an actual tragedy. I'd rather **** in my hand and clap than give it the slightest bit of recognition or praise.
The game is based around the movie, which I don't like either, but I can actually see where people find their entertainment from that.
But the game is something special. If they changed the title to "Handy Manny's Apocalyptic Desert simulator" I'd understand, but no, it's literally a mechanic looking for bits of his car, fighting off a few gypos on the way in a sandbox. Then when all the gypos are dead in the sand box you're in, you get moved to a new one, with the same family of gypos, and the same missions.
I think its safe to say that the creator of the game ate a few shrooms and drove into a halting site, with the outcome being a few inbred nackers coming out and beating the ****e out of the car with their broken hurleys, and robbed the hubcaps off it aswell, so he had to look for the parts when he was sober. That's literally the game.
I fell sorry for the people that payed full price for it tbh but I bought Tererria and played it for 10 minutes so what do I know.

    THIS GAME PUNISHES FUN.

You don't play Mad Max, you work for it. If you want to progress, you better get to work. You have to fight the exact same battles, take out the exact same cars over and over and over and over and over and over until the game tells you that you can go to the next, even more impossible area.

The point where I could not take it anymore is when the game told me I needed a "Faster Car"

And by that it ment I needed to DOWNGRADE my car to almost the starting vehicle and then go fight a near IMPOSSIBLE battle to get a PAINT JOB.

The skill required to get the paint job for that mission FAR outweighed the difficulty of the actual mission.

If your game makes it harder to GET TO the mission than to actually do it. GO BACK! DO IT AGAIN! YOU MADE THE GAME WRONG!

I can overlook the frame rate issues, the horrible characterization and the non-existent story but when a game just slams you into a brick wall for no reason.

The game is fun when you're driving and/or upgrading your car. However, the on foot sections are clunky. I can tolerate the need to hold buttons to perform just about any action, but it's mildly annoying. The combat is sluggish. Punch twice, then hit Y. Repeat until you beat everyone.

The worst part though is the game breaking glitches: There's a gate that didn't appear in my game

The worst part though is the game breaking glitches: There's a gate that didn't appear in my game (allowing me into an area way too soon, apparently). I explored areas before I was supposed to according to the story, and a story mission is completely broken (can't complete). After many hours in, my game is stuck and no further progress is possible. Not even possible to save the game after completing towers, etc.

This game will do that for you, IT DOES BITS! it took like 4 days to do it , but that was ro'er grafting and basically not sleeping. But it should take about a week.

    Paragraph 1 : THE INTRO
Basically, i didnt follow or understand the storyline. But u have like nothing and this goblin thing is trying to help u and it is ugly as sin let me tell u it is so fugly!. But anyway the story really isnt that long at all like if u didnt do the side missions and all of that then u could finish the stroy in like two days , and yeh, the side missions are really repetitve but they dont get old. OH AND THE FIGHTING IS MADTING . Its like batman arkham with assains creed except u fight dirty like u ruin people!. U have to liberate (sort of) areas of the map which are massive. (well two of the ganglands are and one of them is puny). But that takes up a lot of time and its the best way to get upgrades. Initially, it takes a long time to become decent at the game because u start out awfully like u have the bare essentials bastille its good. Once u get a certain amount of upgrades the game becomes too easy and u end up laying waste to like EVERYTHING !

    PARAGRAPH 2 THE 'CONCLUSION
the game is really good, realistic and gritty, massive open world and sandboxy type gameplay, this, combined with somewhat frequent and sudden dips in frame rate make this game swt g.
    HAPPY GAMIN :)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to say the game is about a 50/50 why? cause once Max steps out of his car the game sucks. and you cannot suspend disbelief enough to get totally into it...i am just playing it until F4 comes out.
    1. combat is clunky you have to fight the camera especially if you get up against a wall.
    2. WAY to much timed button mashing (which does not work most of the time)
    3. the constant time slow down for execution scenes is way over done..its not that special or cool.
    4. glitches in terrain and or items that are there but not being seen for example a transfer tank that is invisible but needs to be blown up
    5. MAX has no real range capabilities why cant you throw the shiv???? WHY cant you take the sniper rifle out of the car??
    6. hood ornaments are lame cant see any difference in their effects.
    7. as others have said its VERY repetitive.
    8. why are there no women in the gangs that attack you?
    9. really water heals all?
    10. maggots or dog food really?
11 so if I get out of my car the world forgets about it and attacks me while chum if fixing it? so chum is invincible what the heck do you need Max for?
    12. no stealth or real strategy for bases..its either a frontal assault..or the same painted side entrance on every encounter. then its always mob fighting until you take them down.
    13. in a sand storm the balloon is perfectly still.
14 the ambient sound in the bases is all the same there are voices but no ones around.
    15. what does give a fortress scrap do? please anyone? have seen no difference in either jeet or gutgash..just a scrap sink
    16. the skill tree is weak i have all of them at 10 and max is fully upgraded with guns fists armor etc. and max is at road warrior 25 so now what. seems to easy and to quick.
    17. no gama or difficulty settings.

Combat was far too easy....and I am an explorer gamer and combat is never my forte.

Unfortunately, unlike Witcher, it didn't hit a homerun on story or atmosphere. Story was generic bland, but serviceable and atmosphere was not immersive in the least.

Sound was well done, especially the car sounds.

Great story, true to the history of the franchise. Pace of the game structured so that you enjoy each aspect, even collecting scraps. You feel like Max, exploring the world and building your car. The only piece that is a bit dull, is disarming bombs with the Buggy. Great customization of car and Max.

Driving and car combat are big parts of the game, and (arguably) the most fun you'll have here. Cruising around the desert in your custom

war machine is a blast, as well as all the trouble you're likely to get into just by doing so. Enemy car patrols and convoys are fairly

frequent, and there are plenty of options to deal damage. This keeps the desire to keep upgrading the car a high priority.

Once the larger game world opens up (about an hour in), the real fun begins. Casually driving around and causing chaos, completing the

main missions, and messing around with custom car configurations are all dumb, loud fun. The game got really bogged down, however, when I

tried to take it too seriously and complete 100% of everything.

Trying to knock off every point-of-interest on the map screen reveals an ingrained repetitiveness to the tasks that leads to joy-numbing

boredom. Using the dog to sniff out land mines is fun one time, but not thirty times. The same goes for scavenging locations, road races,

and even the base camps. There just aren't that many different things to do here. Batman this is not.

Speaking of Batman, Mad Max (like Shadow of Mordor) basically rips the dark knight's free-flow combat system right off. Way to cut those

corners, WB. The game tries to custom-tailor the fighting to Max by making him more of a brawler. This amounts to having only one actual

move you can do over and over (surprise - it's a punch in the face!) and making Max slow and clunky. There's no way to interrupt your own

move to counter an incoming punch from the guy behind you (a problem Rocksteady fixed years ago), so timing is really key. To spice things

up with some originality, Max also gets a move to avoid incoming attacks. Can you guess what it is? Yeah, it's a freakin' somersault. To

be fair, rolling out of the way of incoming hit-and-runs while Chumbucket fixes your car never gets old.

Ah, Chumbucket. Apparently the one thing missing from the Mad Max universe was a comedy sidekick who's not only completely unfunny, but

also who's annoyance factor is of a Jar Jar Binks-level intensity. The developers also decided to have him follow you EVERYWHERE YOU GO

and comment on EVERY SINGLE THING THAT HAPPENS IN THE GAME. There's no way to drive off without him or turn off his audio. He sounds like

a mentally-handicapped anxiety-case was force-fed caffeine pills and possibly some hallucinogens. Colorful characters are great in small

    doses, but not like this.

The car physics feel perfect for smashing or just driving around. It's when racing is involved that things get sticky. If the car even

grazes the edge of the race track or a rock, it's likely to go airborne and land facing the wrong direction. Thanks, havoc engine. Even

in the open desert, the handling is a problem with tight cornering. It's way too easy to have the whole car spin out of control. You

can't combine the crazy physics of GTA with the picky precision of Forza and expect people to not free-flow their fist through the TV

screen. Number 2 seems to be the magic number with video games. Here's hoping they can work out the kinks and deliver a 9/10 sequel in a few years. The Good: - Car combat is really satisfying. - Building custom cars rarely gets old. - Breaking someone's jaw feels great. - Feels like Mad Max. The Bad: - Chumbucket. - Max is too slow needs more moves. - Need to be able to counter an attack at any time. - No way to save custom car configurations. - Archangels don't line up with when upgrades are available. - Almost impossible to build a car that's not ugly (but it IS Mad Max, so...) - Mini bosses need to not all be THE EXACT SAME OPPONENT COPIED AND PASTED FIVE TIMES WITH DIFFERENT-COLORED ARMOR. - Max needs to be able to fix up his own damn car. The road warrior doesn't know how to use a wrench? - Not being able to drive The Interceptor until the end. Let us have some fun before you take it away. - No way to easily locate the car bodies. - No clear reward for adding to the stockpiles. - Endless desert. How about more than one biome? It's Australia, not Vault 101. - Drifting? Things I wish I knew sooner: - The rolling actually helps a lot. - You don't the yellow winch to kill a war crier. You can actually just shoot them. - Don't bother trying to eliminate all threats in an area unless you need to unlock something. - The quicker you get to Gastown, the quicker you can upgrade Chumbucket's wrench. - The big dust storms blow crates across the desert full of HUGE amounts of scrap. - There are game-breaking bugs that can pop up if you leave a camp in the middle. - Upgrade the harpoon. Ripping a wheel off a car is a one-shot kill.

Mad Max is a highly underrated game, in my opinion. This was a game that I could not put down. The gameplay is different in regard to resource management, which is a welcome addition. The story was also a lot stronger than I had initially expected it to be. My only complaint is that the frame rate is a little bit on the choppy side.

Another surprise is that it's better than most critics would have you think. "Just Cause" developer Avalanche Studios have made a fairly entertaining open-world action game featuring plenty to do, but not much to see. True to the movies, the game is set in the desert and while it's pretty to look at, it's not exactly a riveting place to be. "Mad Max" also features the acclaimed combat system which debuted in "Batman: Arkham Asylum" and was refined in "Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor". It's been tweaked to feel more like a brawler's style with a more sluggish feel. Punches, kicks and weapon swings seem to have a real weight to them. The other big feature of this game is the car customization which is similar to the pirate ship customization from "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag".

The story in "Mad Max" isn't the best, but it's decent. Quality cutscenes depict Max's quarrel with another overlord of the desert; this time the son of Immortan Joe from "Fury Road". In this tale, Max has a sidekick; a hunchback mechanic named Chumbucket who accompanies him on missions. Being an open-world game, "Mad Max" features plenty of side-missions, weapon upgrades, a progression system and loot. Due to its post apocalyptic setting, it recalls "The Last of Us" especially since you spend plenty of time filling your water canteen, finding scrap and collecting lost photos of the past. Max can be upgraded in many ways including powering up his one firearm, a sawed off shotgun. As you drive through the desert, you can take out gang outposts in various ways much like a "Metal Gear Solid" game. Releasing scattered air-balloons adds activities to the map. This redundant task stays rather fresh each time since it usually includes some light-puzzle solving.

In the end, "Mad Max" isn't a revolutionary game by any means. It doesn't evolve the genre in any big way and it can get repetitive after awhile (like many open world games). But it has a lot more activities and customization options than I expected. The combat also provides some good fun. While it's not as good as "Far Cry 4" or any game I've mentioned before, it's a solid video game debut for the titular character. I'd rank it with a 7.2 out of 10.

Like the movie Max loses his car at the start and must spend the game building the 'black on black' back to a devastating war machine. Plenty of hours are spent trans-versing this fallen world. And enjoyable it is.

Mad Max is without a doubt the most underrated game I have ever played. It can easily stand beside the big boys in the gaming world and be proud of its take on the post apocalyptic game world.

    Pros-
    Great cut scenes
Fantastic graphics (the best I have seen on Xbox)
    Clouds-sunsets
    Pacing of game
    Vehicle combat
    Easy map to navigate
    Great enemies/antagonist
    Fantastic fire and explosions
Chumbucket suits the game story IMO

    Cons-
    Un-Australian terminology (hoods, flashlights)
Repetitive game play as you get deeper into game
Hand to hand fighting is quite simple (but I still liked it)
Poor car handling on control pad

All in all I really love this game for another main reason. The solitary wanderer (when well done) is a great character and something that many of us can relate to in the real world. Which I guess is why many of us computer game so much- escapism from a world gone mad.

Story & environment : Both are as you'd expect. Neither blow you away but there's nothing to complain about really.

Customisation : The customisation is incredible, it's the main reason I bought the game. There are so many different perks/upgrades to work towards, for max, for strongholds and for your car.

Minesweeping : Yikes. Maybe I'm missing something but why on earth can't you clear mines in your own car. The minesweeping car is horrible to drive and you can't even fast travel with it.

Travel : I understand that being able to fast travel everywhere wouldn't fit with the game's theme but, for me, fast travel points were too sparse and travelling to missed objectives became really tedious.

Roads : I know some people would probably disagree with me on this but I didn't like that you slow down massively if you clip the "edge" of a "road". They're sandy paths and you can barely see where the road stops and the off-road begins.

In summary, there are a bunch of things that, although they're keeping with its theme, make the game tedious and uncomfortable to play.

The game has a lot of similar objectives to do, like a Ubisoft game, and it's incredibly fun to do them all, because you get important rewards to upgrade Max and your car and also the gameplay loop is really fun.

And one of the most important things for me, and why I love this game is that it never gets boring the more you play it, it actually gets more fun when you upgrade all of your stuff. Not a lot of games can do this, a lot of games can get really boring after a while. Overall, a 10/10 excellent game, and it's really sad how underrated this game is, more people should know about it.

Had a blast! Way better than a 7! The fighting was fun and the cars were even better. Madmax is a wasteland fun park. I definitely would recommend it.

Overall after completing the game I remained very impressive. Of course, the game is not really perfect, however, the hero doesn't stuck anywhere and the game-play is smooth. I would point out that the game has very nice scenery. Even though, I did not like any Avalanche Studios Group games before this is the first one I was impressed with. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm going, to be honest, this is a fine game combat is good, customization is good, the upgrade system is there & the story & character arcs can be there but there are two problems I have with the game: No replayability & no character development outside of Max & Hope the game does nothing to develop the characters or the plot, the plot just takes a 180 from getting my car back to getting revenge if you want a game for 5 bucks this is a threat game just don't expect to have much fun after the first time you beat the game Expand

Pretty good game. A hidden gem. Interesting and unique gameplay, combined with a huge open-world world and insanely good and funny story, a great addition to MM movies. I hope a new sequel to the game comes out.

He echado de menos una relación homosexual. Está claro que las mujeres no le gustan demasiado o nada. Max tiene uno de los mejores cuerpos masculinos de todo los juego que he jugado y el paquete es precioso.

One of gaming's great tragadies is that trash like GTA Online and Fortnite print money so games like Mad Max don't get sequels or DLC because the profit margin wasn't astronomically high. Buy the game and thank me when the credits roll. Expand

Starting with the good things. The mechanics are good, the gameplay is nice, the driving, the weapon, the fighting, all good somewhat. But sadly the bad things overshadow the good ones. The game is full of bugs. Sometimes you can't destroy a car because just as you try to enter yours to destroy it, the car disappeared.

There is a lot of holes in the logic and sense of the game as you are in a post apocalyptic scenario and you go around destroying oil pumps (which are, by essence, what's still keeping the cars and everything running...). You cannot climb, no really, you can't. There are only a few exceptional yellow marked places and stairs to which you can, but overall you can't jump. Somehow living to the end of times left you without a skill to climb stuff.

Frankly, the open world has a huge potential, the hunger and thirst could have been portrayed better than just filling your health as well as your car really only burning fuel once you start using side fire launchers..

This game also misses on an opportunity to provide a shop. Someone interested in selling stuff you can't or shouldn't find as often.

So, it has potential. But it feels like an unfinished game.

A spectacle to behold, but Mad Max's barren landscape is lacking the toys to stand up as a proper sandbox. [Nov 2015, p.68]

Not nearly as magnificent as the movie, and not as brilliant as Shadow of Mordor was when it came out, but Mad Max is still a fun (if somewhat repetitive) adventure in a post apocalyptic world filled with sand, blood and gasoline. There's nothing really innovative in the mix, but in the end it's way better than most movie based tie ins. More than enough for fans of Mad Max and videogames all over the world.

A solid sandbox adventure, lacking in the chaos and madness that the title and license would suggest.
