When I first saw an achievement for completing the game in an hour I didn't expect it to be terribly long. I did expect to be entertained in that short time though... I was not. I did expect to be entertained in that short time though... I was not. The game simply isn't challenging. The bulk of the game involves running away from someone/something with a few mundane jump puzzles thrown in. The game is no more "freaky/scarey" than the stop-motion flicks made by Tim Burton. There is no real story, not even a real driving factor to move your character to the left. After playing you are just left with the empty feeling of having wasted time and money. For those who enjoy dark/strange caricatures but aren't expecting much from a game, Little Nightmares might be a perfect addition to your game collection... but only after a deep, deep discount. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here is my review of Little Nightmares (Spoilers):

Story - There is no story to this game, the player is just a child stuck on a boat that eats people to survive that's all. The child doesn't even reveal itself during the game and the players don't even know who this character is what's even going on. Even if this is a Kickstarter kind of game for new developers, that doesn't mean they can toss them as if people will instantly like it. Having the ending of the child eating the final boss after defeating her was a WTF moment when the child also gained god powers out of know where. Beating the game took almost 2 hours to complete.

Gameplay - Very confusing, but also keeps the player on alert. There are no tutorial prompts to help the player progress the game, but having the horror element to the game along with puzzle like platforms is very amusing and makes the player sharpen their mind, but it also gives the player a headache as the game gives them small to not much hints on what to do after completing one area of the game. Hiding from the boss/enemies in the game also bring the goosebumps like feelings to the game but gets annoying afterwards as the player is trying to figure out how to get out of the area with out having the enemies chasing them.

Graphics - Very well done, especially the lighting during gameplay. The visuals in the game were spot on as it gives a good environment of what the player is surrounded by.

Platform - Feels as though the game will give them a bad perception on where the player will place the child on. If the child can climb, can't he also shimmy to the side of the ledge as well to get up? Having it made 3D platform gives the player a confusing feel as to where they are going.

Conclusion - There is no story or tutorial prompts, gameplay is 50/50 but with little to no hints in the game, Graphic are well done and the platforms they created are not good. Little Nightmares is for gamers who are caring mostly for puzzle/platform games. Seeing how everyone else gave it an average of 8/10 fondles my head to know if they get how the story is portraying even though it gave no details whatsoever.

Final Verdict: 4 out of 10
Buy, No Buy or Rent - Not Buy, this game shouldn't need money for players to purchase if there is no storyline and confusing hints. Also giving players headaches during gameplay is not a good sign as well.

This is one of the most frustrating games I’ve ever played. Not worth the time in my opinion.

Unique Burtonesque art direction could not avert my attention from the fact that Little Nightmares is one of the poorest platformers I’ve played in years. [07/2017, p.43]

A carnival of grotesque and gothic fancies makes up for the finicky platforming. [July 2017, p.87]

Little Nightmares is based entirely on its visual appearance but at the same time it couldn't exist as anything else but a game. Unfortunately, it's the insecure practicalities of the gaming mechanics that somewhat detract from an otherwise sublime performance. Full of subdued innuendo, Little Nightmares is like a demented puppet show or diorama, somehow lifelike but at the same time disturbingly artificial. It certainly doesn't look like your typical game and is a nightmare worth experiencing.
