    IF A GAME IS NOT READY DON'T RELEASE IT! I am so sick of playing broken games! This game needs a lot more work before it can be enjoyable to play on the Xbox One. It is charming but so many problems need to be fixed that releasing it in this condition is inexcusable. I am losing faith in pre-ordering and day one purchases.

    LEGO games are at their best when they are replicating the movies I've watched. They are at their worst when they create their own plots for no reason other than not following an established story. Undercover tries to go the middle ground by having its own plot and no relation to any movie. Overall the story is fine. They are at their worst when they create their own plots for no reason other than not following an established story. Undercover tries to go the middle ground by having its own plot and no relation to any movie. Overall the story is fine. But Undercover tries to do away with some of the core LEGO features to mixed results.

    Firstly the game is divided into chapters which are really just dividers between the plot lines. You are pretty much in an open world the entire time. Chapters don't have any boundaries other than free roam. Within certain chapters are special assignments which mimic the traditional levels of other LEGO games. They require a certain stud total to get a completion bonus, they have checkpoints and there are stuff to collect. But it seems almost haphazard how they are mixed together. In some chapters you are simply going from point A to point B. In other chapters you have to complete "mission" like objectives, and then start a special assignment. Why they went with this arbitrary separation is confusing. Another issue is that they've done away with the minikits. You now collect 4 shields.

    Perhaps one of the biggest gripes I have is that you play the same character throughout the game. Some games could have pulled this off (Batman, Indiana Jones) but this is just bad. To add diversity you collect uniforms (think Batman's suits). The problem is the uniforms are mostly stupid. In one case you are a farmer, in another a fireman. Why they didn't introduce more characters and have you switch between is beyond me. It was tiring using the same character the entire game. Even worse is that many of the costumes had stupid features. For the farmer you can hold onto a chicken and fly?? A miner can use dynamite. A robber can break down doors?? All of these screamed extra characters but not in Undercover. The fact that they have loads of characters to collect is completely irrelevant when you have to use the same character throughout the story. Such a wasted effort.

    Another failure with this game is the secondary characters. You have some help in the form of people to talk too but the primary helper is a fellow cop that screams incompetence. They were clearing going for a theme here but it was way overkill. I hated everything about this character and yet they kept throwing him into the story. It brought down the entire story. You don't even get to play the character so you can have the joy of throwing them off a bridge.

    The game does have a hint system but it is pretty much useless. The flying sections with the farmer are beyond frustrating. Often times you are not facing the correct direction to fly but if you use the directional pad you pretty much plummet. I'm thinking it has to be a bug because nobody would have coded it this way on purpose. The astronaut has a similar feature but his flying last literally 2 seconds. If you don't immediately move forward you fall out of the sky. In many cases this means a long trek back to the start. As much as I've hated flying in previous LEGO games, these characters are the worst. The flying in Undercover is actually better than previous games.

    Finally, the game is clearly designed for open world given the chapter system, the impossibly large amount of activities and the size of the map. If the activities were fun and easily found then this wouldn't be too bad but to complete them all you have to find them either by getting close to them (in some cases) or using a scanner which seems to only detect 1 at a time. So you basically fumble in the dark to find the activities (or luck up and run across them while exploring) and then have to sit through the boring activity. At game completion I was a little over 25% done. That means 75% of aimless wondering.

    Overall I applaud TT for trying a game not based upon a movie but they really do better when they stick with the movies. They have really gotten into the open world stuff and it seems like mostly fluffy in the newer games. An arbitrary way to expand the time it takes to play. I long for the days when I could play a LEGO version of a movie I liked and focus on the play without the distractions of the open world.

    Город довольно большой, в нём спрятано рекордное количество барахла, а также доступно немало однотипных побочных заданий, не выполнив которые получить часть этого барахла не удастся :(
    Я считаю, переборщили конкретно - треть, а то и половину можно смело было выпиливать, тогда игра не превратилась бы в рутину к концу.

    Подведём итоги: игра добротная и если сумеете вовремя остановиться со сбором трофеев, то останетесь довольны.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think what ruined my experience on the game is the French translation. Since I played in French I didn't get every movie references because they dont use original voices. I saw on a English gameplay Terminator. I was like ; '' I never saw that '' because they didn't put the good voice acting. The game it self is ok, baby some jokes are more for kids but it was still ok to play. The open world gets very boring after a couple of hours and they didnt put Red Bricks to find things in the Open World , so I had to check a couple time on Youtube to find some missing stuff.

    Positive things ;

    + Good movies references

    Negative things ;

    - Kid game with adults movie, weird
    - Open world gets boring
    - Missing stuff like red bricks in the open world

    Lego City hits the heights of the very best Lego games, with only a few of the lows. [June 2017, p.75]

    With improved performance and the addition of co-op gameplay functionality, Lego City Undercover is elevated to the status of one of the better, more fun modern day Lego titles.

    LEGO City Undercover offers an enjoyable experience for both adults and children thanks to its well-balanced script and the goofy cast of characters. There are some bugs along the way and the open-world setting feels shallow and bland when compared to other games, but there’s more than enough fun to be found around the city to keep you playing long after the main story is over. If you’ve enjoyed other LEGO games, LEGO CITY Undercover should definitely be on your radar, but for those who don’t, there is nothing revolutionary from the previous formula that will make you change your mind.
