Hyper Scape is a free-to-play first-person shooter battle royale game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft for Xbox One. For some reason I always feel like Ubisoft makes solid games quickly with large studios, because before you even heard about one of their games releasing there's already world wide tournaments set up for it. Hyper Scape lets you fight your way through the unique districts of Neo Arcadia, a virtual city featuring imposing landmarks that bring verticality to the next level. On the surface, Hyper Scape’s 99-player battle royale currently sticks to the last-man-or-team-standing formula with just two game modes: solos and three-player squads. The map, however, breaks the mold by being a polished cityscape that’s what I imagine a mashup of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Division would look like. It’s composed of 99 districts that gradually “decay” in random patterns over time, causing all their buildings to collapse and depriving anyone there of cover. So far the only thing I didn't like in the game is it's so sci-fi we’ll - I mean yes everybody loves sci-fi but this is so much sci-fi even changing your weapon is making you feel like your are in virtual in virtual in virtual complicated.
More than any other battle royale game that's come out in the past few years, Hyper Scape is all about movement. The game lets players slide and double jump their way through a futuristic city with plenty of vertical elements. We can't talk about PUBG and Hyper Scape together cause they are nothing a like but if you are hyper energic Hyper Scape probably your game to roll. In the end it’s a game with a lot of potential and I expect the game to evolve over time into more so don’t pass up the free to play opportunity on your Xbox One at least.

Aside from a cyberpunk matrix asthetic and a high emphasis on verticality, Hyperscape does little to set itself apart from the droves other more creative BRs on the market. I spent most of my time thinking to myself "man, this would be so much better if it's mobility was more like titanfall".

Hyper Scape on Xbox One feels like it tries new ideas but fails to implement them in any effective way, and frankly even if they were well-optimized, it’s still not enough to make it stand out from the rest of the pack. This is a perfectly serviceable battle royale, but it is just that – serviceable.

Hyper Scape's uninteresting map, inability to make progression rewarding, and its painful combat keep it from reaching its full potential. There are definitely some tweaks that Ubisoft Montreal could make to Hyper Scape's combat to make it a far more entertaining experience, and one has to imagine that the game will evolve based on feedback to Season 1. As it stands, however, the game struggles to stake its claim on the genre.

Randomness is key to battle royale games, but Hyper Scape leans a little too much into it. The game has solid weapons and hero-like Hack abilities, but you're at the mercy of being lucky enough to get what you need to have a higher chance of winning. The battleground doesn't help in this regard, since it's difficult to know where you're going and make a plan about where to loot next without stopping to open the map. At least the individual moments in Hyper Scape are fun. A match could be ruined by the randomness working against you, but that doesn't stop moments like turning into a ball and trying to out bounce three enemy balls any less fun in how ridiculously silly it is.
