Hellpoint tries to make a good first impression with its designs, gameplay, mechanics and a "Hellraiser" kinda atmosphere that do it job. Very satisfying gameplay but a terrible console port full of bugs, freeze-screens and an unbelievable downgrade over PC's version that will mostly ruin the Hellpoint experience. These are the big issues from the game. Hellpoint: I was so looking forward to this game and maybe I set my expectations too lofty but in the end was a bit of a let down to the self bar I had created. It seemed like a rework of dark souls mechanics and gameplay. However they failed to live up to the expectations left behind in this category or genre of what I was mentally stacking against in my feel of the game. It seemed like a rework of dark souls mechanics and gameplay. However they failed to live up to the expectations left behind in this category or genre of what I was mentally stacking against in my feel of the game. The mechanics were not smooth with attacks and sometimes didn't register because the enemies were still standing up or from you swinging too rapidly. The starting areas are difficult to get through because you really start with nothing but a pipe in hand. I din't find the overall aesthetic of the game for what it seemed to be aiming for, even the enemies resemble the dark soul characters. For an out in space type theme I suppose I was expecting more from the enemies I was confronting. There are not near enough areas to save at in my humble opinion either. If you die you have to go through the whole first area and hope you get through in the second to reach a safe haven. The drops of the enemies offer little reward or the much of the same each time. Even when a hard boss or enemy appears when you defeat it sometimes you get absolutely nothing. Also the game allows for pvp to occur in all areas if someone happens to be there. My first 25 mins dealt with me going against a player farming me til I finally got him. That was a big downfall for my experience because I never enabled it and the game doesn't teach you how to disable this feature. Even after gaining character levels there are more players to kill, and the NPCs that try to kill you. It was a bit frustrating, but hey so is the game that came to mind while playing. The game fails to meet the quality of other games in this category but it wasn't a complete loss either. In the end for the price of admission it would be something to check out for fans of the genre for the Xbox One console. Despite my overly critical opinion on the game there's a lot of good here to find as well, so possibly I mentally began with my expectations at too high of a level in place. Expand

If you’re a Souls fan, you’ll most likely enjoy Hellpoint, as long as you can handle its lack of polish and extremely janky platforming. It would have been easy to write off Hellpoint as a simple Souls knock off, and I almost did until I found a friend to play alongside. It’s unforgiving in every aspect and doesn’t hold your hand in any way, something Souls fans will appreciate. The co-op feature makes it much more accessible for casual fans of the genre like myself, but there’s enough content within to really test yourself with for those accustomed to difficult challenges.

A dark and terrifying adventure that many may go into, but only a few survive. The good is met with the bad, evening out the quality to being pretty decent. While the design of enemies and combat are great, the flaws (in my opinion) lay in the confusing areas and much too well-hidden secrets. The lack of resources that would allow you to travel hinders the overall experience. No map, limited fast travel, and zero direction on what to do next will be confusing enough to stop you from completing the game. Is it difficult? Yes, but not all in the sense of combat. It’s difficult to continue on with the journey because of hurdles that slow down the pacing. I thought leveling up was great and dying only made me try harder. However, doing simple tasks like dismantling items or picking your next weapon was a chore.

So if you're looking for an experience similar to Dark Souls, but with a different story and a great exploration factor, Hellpoint is your game.
