I'm not a big a fan of rough-like/lites, but i did genuinely find enjoyment in Hades. Although not a huge selection, the weapons feel varied. Combat, as a whole, is fast and fluid. I appreciated the sense of progression. The story and characters, as much as I'm a little bored of European mythology at this point, are well written and mildly interesting.

What is really important for these types of games, is level variety and enemy variety. In Hades, the enemies were not varied enough for me, even though which ones appeared seemed procedurally generated. Combined with the levels feeling exactly the same, apart from which power-ups appeared, it gets repetitive really fast.

Everything is really polished. The art style simple and clean (arguably a little bland). The gameplay is fun. The story is fine. Play it if you like these sorts of games.

Hades has a cool idea, and the characters are really lovable and alive, though it is just a glorified grind without much payoff. Then the game tells you to do it again and again for the 'real' ending. Even playing 3 hours more I didn't make progress with any characters, you don't even know if you'll find that item out there, or if the character you want to talk to will even be around!

The combat is that serviceable and then bland feeling Supergiant combat with that same Deviantart.com art style. The music is the same bland music they always have.

You feel addicted to wanting to upgrade your relationships, home, and character, and the combat to do it feels like a bland and stressful slog, as it is often a gangbang-bullethell game.

Hades, in my opinion, is probably the best roguelike game I have ever played and I can not find a single negative thing to say about this title except that I wish there was even more levels or perhaps the addition of a co-op mode with some of the characters that Zag bonds with. But that doesn’t take away from how spectacular this title is and how much I highly recommend that you try out Hades. My only regret is I didn’t get to play Hades much sooner.

Hades is a rare breed of game. Supergiant’s design confidence is almost reflected in the cavalier attitude of the game’s protagonist, Zagreus; capable and arrogant, young and vibrant. But evermore charming as a result. I’ve used the phrase before, but this is absolutely a franchise-in-waiting, and more, if the studio and Private Division were so inclined. But know this, at the very least: those accolades? The ones that kept coming? We’re adding to them -- a year on, and now with a new audience and new homes, Hades is still near-perfect and an absolute must-play. Don’t miss the bus again.
