In addition to the clubs and spears, you have long range bow, short range rapid fire bow, double bow, exploding bow, Owl strike, Owl bomb, different types of grenades, traps, takedowns, need I go on. No, there isn't full auto spray and pray... a little more skill is involved here. Having a really tough animal companion to guard your back is fun and there are meaningful differences between the animals. The developers tried to do something new with Far Cry Primal, and I think they succeeded. The environment has a real sense of wilderness and danger and makes savage killing with sticks and stones just plain fun. Expand

This game is pretty good. It's a Far Cry game, but very different than the previous entries. One of this games greatest strengths is taking away your sniper rifles and rocket launchers, and giving you a stick with a rock on it instead. It puts you right in the fight, and everything feels much more visceral than before.

The setting and feeling of this are incredible. Living in this pure, untainted world fraught with danger everywhere makes you feel like man did before things like giant stone walls and guns were around. You feel threatened by man and nature everywhere you go, and you are not at the very top of the food chain. The ambiance and feeling of the world are top notch and beautifully crafted.

The biggest, and dare I say only, major drawback this game has is the story. There isn't a whole lot to the NPC's or Takkar himself, they really don't change or grow much at all, and the story itself kind of falls flat. It's literally "these two tribes threaten us, kill both of their leaders, the end". There's just not much there. Not that that's particularly out of the ordinary for Far Cry, but this may be the worst it's been.

TL;DR: the game play itself is tremendously fun, the world is engrossing and rich, but the story is one-note and not evocative at all.

Put Denuvo aside, as I mentioned before the game is fun and entertaining and don't take it too seriously. Far Cry 4 was definitely a better game but Primal is not a terrible game by any means.

It's something different, no more booms and explosions from grenades or run'em gun'em with machine guns but killing your foe with stone made weapons and headshots with a bow or throwing your spear is pretty awesome. As far as performance optimizations go, I haven't had any issues. The game mostly runs a consistent 60fps on my GTX 980, i7-4790k, 16gb ram system with max settings @ 1080p.

For all the heat they take, Ubisoft has perfected this particular game play system and really built a vibrant and living world. The game delivers on the technical level for sure, graphics and framerate are AAA all the way.

The primitive weapon set makes it feel more like a survival game and there some animals that are almost impossible to take down 1 on 1, even when you're fully upgraded. this makes it feel higher stakes when you're moving around the map and you have to use fire strategically as well. The side mission design is great overall, especially the escort missions which are intense and action packed. Also, I give the developers props for creating the "Cave Missions" with awesome scenery and unique enemies/events for each cave. Ubisoft CANNOT be accused of recycling the mission design in this game, you can tell they really put a lot of effort into it.

Overall, can't recommend this game enough if you're like me and you were extremely turned off by the mailed in effort that was Far Cry 4. It's obvious that Ubisoft felt they were onto something with this concept and they went all in on developing it into something unique and really fun.

    But why is that so?

The first impression gives delights me with great graphics and a wonderful prehistoric setting. And, of Course now a days, it is an open world. But Far Cry Primal feels to me, like the first ever REAL open world. I do not feel rushed to help a friend or to kill a bad guy. Most of the time I can do, whatever i please to do. Main quest, side quests, hunting, taming, exploring, building new weapons or my very own little village.
And the one generic thing being critisised in every open world game, in Far Cry Primal actually has a very good reason: You MUST collect a lot of things provided by mother nature, simply because you need them for construction.
And sometimes I don´t do any of that. Sometimes I just wander around and watch. A group of deers eating grass, just to get attacked by a flock of wolves. A little boy in my village, who turns around a stone to eat the insects underneath it. A young couple getting it on in a "secret place" near my personal cave. A woman moaning and walking out of the village just to sit in to the grass and make a pile of you know what.
There is so much life in this game by merely doing nothing and that adds a big amount of atmosphere to it.
At the end of the game I had tamed, hunted und skinned every animal, I had build the complete village, I had found every secret spot, I had conquered every outpost. This is the first open world game where I actually conquered the magical 100% in completion.
It took my about 65-70 hours and not one minute I regret of it.
To me Far Cry Primal is a perfect gem, just like back in 1998 Commandos was. So if Ubisoft thinks about bringing Far Cry Primal 2, they better do not change anything to the worse.

Now then, Far Cry Primal is truly a great game. The lush, open-world is eye candy, the ever popular survival mechanic is taken to a whole new level, and personally I think that the different tribes in the game look absolutely amazing and it is clear much attention was payed to detail. The Udam are more primitive cannibals who wear the bones of humans and animals alike as armor, while the Izila are more advanced usually sporting ritualistic type tribal clay masks and wooden/basket-type weave armor. Should you ever come to a point were you complete all the side quests and main missions and become bored, there is the option to reset all outposts back to their hostile state providing some degree of replay ability. My only complaints are the combat is somewhat bland and there isn't a whole lot of replay ability. All in all however, Far Cry Primal is really a great game and I highly recommend that you at least try it out at some point, if your on the fence, maybe wait till the price drops a little, who knows? Your first is a wolf that can seriously kick some butt against most "human" enemies. Just point and he'll go get them. You have to keep him alive and heal him with meat. I really like this part of the game. You also get an owl that can give you an overhead view and map out certain POI. You can also use the owl to target an enemy for your beast. I get the same exhilarating feeling as the last FC games when I throw a bee bomb/fire bomb at the enemies and hear them scream (what voice acting !) while I bludgeon the other enemies to death with my clubs and spears. It's especially fun just throwing your stone club in the enemies face and watching blood spurt out of their head. Then there's the animals, traps and poison bombs. My point is that the developers gave me lot of satisfying ways to kill an enemy so the game never became boring, which is a huge surprise. The stealth too seemed samey at first but I like how they added new animations (clubbing people in the head is hilarious), more satisfying sounds (love the sound of the shard hitting the target's head/neck) and death animation to keep the same stealth take downs fun. The rating would be higher if it had a better and focused story and more defined characters. Expand

Far Cry Primal is a first person action adventure survival game set in the Stone Age.
You play as Takkar, just a regular hunter, who’s then tasked by a woman he runs into to go rescue some of her people and instantly become the leader of a new tribe…
There’s very little emphasis on narrative here, just a quick introduction and then you’re free to do whatever you want… but there is incentive to follow through with helping your tribe mates…
This for the most part is a recourse gathering game…
By gathering resources you can craft better weapons, build huts to upgrade your village and unlock skills.. And of course craft food items to help you survive…
That’s basically it... explore the world... hunt animals for their skins…
You can even eventually tame them to help you in combat…
There are of course human enemies to deal with.. not just aggressive animals…
Outside of the 14 hour campaign you can liberate areas to unlock fast travel points, and you can do side quests for characters you meet in the woods…
Your tamed animals help you with a simple call.. they’ll even stealth with you if you go into stealth mode …
Your weapon option is about as varied as you’d expect for the stone age, you get a club, sling, spear, bow and arrows, traps, and bombs.. all of which you have to craft as you use them…
None of your tools are indestructible, thankfully wood is vast and as you upgrade your crafting skills, you get more recourses, and get more out of those recourses.. so slowly less annoying…
What doesn’t get less annoying though is enemies…
A great immersion breaker is that enemies are harder or easier to kill depending on the section of the map you’re in for no apparent reason…
This isn’t a JRPG.. This is an open world game... I don’t want enemies to scale with me... I want to feel powerful after sinking all of my skill points and crafted materials into stronger weapons…
What does make me feel powerful though is hopping on the back of a majestic mammoth and slinging enemies into the air…
You can ride any large creature you tame once you progress far enough into the story…
There’s such a great balance here of gameplay incentive…
There’s reason to play through the story to unlock new abilities, and there’s reason to ignore the story for a little while to get better weapons, and new skills…
You can’t do it all sticking to one side of the game, and I love that…
And hunting for rare animals and reaching for rare materials is just as fun as attacking a settlement on the back of a caber toothed tiger and taking it for my own…
There are also these cool witcher contract type missions deep in the game where you get to go on a hunt for a legendary animal that’s been terrorizing the land… Looking for clues, setting up traps, and then weakening them down to finally be able to claim them for yourself to call to fight by your side at any time…
A lot of the main missions for the most part have to do with searching for clues and following paths with your hunter vision, which works like eagle vision from assassins creed, or a witcher sense in the witcher the 3…
It highlights animals, plants.. and points of interest…
Its highly annoying that this vision has a timer though…
I don’t know why ubisoft ruined this awesome tool from Assassins Creed… they ruined it in Unity too…
It’s not fun having to constantly click r3 and wait for a cool down every few seconds when I’m trying to follow a path…
    Stop doing this ubisoft..
Thankfully you can call your cool little owl friend to fly around the sky to get a larger view of the path since this function is so unnecessarily annoying…
This is a very ubisoft game… If you don’t like the idea of map cleaning in your games... this isn’t the one for you…
Map cleaning is pretty hit and miss for me, but thankfully I enjoyed it here…
This world is ridiculous... it feels alive… you can ride mammoths…
    what more do you want?
    I give Far Cry Primal

They added more emphasis to the world, giving it more interaction and having the day-night cycles be important and you can tame the wildlife so you can even the odds and have a pretty awesome pet to be your sidekick. I would be the first to praise a game that can get away from using guns, doing something different. I welcome innovation, if it's actually something new.

Like Sleeping Dogs where the majority of the game you don't use guns, cause they're illegal to own in China. Smart reason to focus more on awesome fighting. I was expecting to see that here but the mechanics are still the same. Of course there's the bow but the melee weapons feel like your swinging a crowbar in Half Life 1. I would have liked to see the melee weapon attacks be really fleshed out with a cool new system behind them but they're just short ranged guns... if that makes any sense.

There are a lot of new ideas which I love but when the mechanics are so similar it makes it difficult to feel like I'm playing a new game. It's not a bad game but it's not a good Far Cry game. As just a game goes it's pretty good and fun to play. But the major problem people had with Far Cry games were how repetitive the gameplay would become. Capture outpost, scout the area then do a mission. Rinse repeat. This game needed a more in depth gameplay style to match the combat but eventually you fall under that same cycle as previous games.

Lastly if the mechanics don't stick out from previous games, the visuals will. If you played Far Cry 4 you'll notice It doesn't look any different aside from the prehistoric theme. Which makes me disappointed because Far Cry 3 was an incredible looking game... at the time. It blew other open world games out the water with impressive visuals and its beautiful landscapes. Sadly they've riding that same engine for a long time now.

I'd say wait for a price drop, but definitely check it out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I actually really enjoyed this game. Idk why but I just do. an yea its a modded map of a section of Farcry4 but I honestly dont care. I really like the ability to "tame" animals. (Bloodfang is life and my lil buddy badger) I can understand why some ppl dont like this game like one reason is its "too grindy" which I can easily toleate since ive put a total of 3000+ hours into the entirety of the Monster Hunter series. Now the setting being 10,000 BC I really enjoy, very few games go to around this era of human history. (even if its fictional). I liked Farcry 3 and 4 (not much on 2) but I like Primal alot better than those 2., maybe bc ive played waaaaay too many modern era shooters, so something like this is a breath of fresh air. Now the Udam u capture to b apart of ur village, is honestly one of the more likable characters. imo I feel sad for him but I honestly enjoy his character. Now I know my opinion is "unpopular" and some ppl will call me an "idiot" nonetheless for liking it, but its one of those rare few games tht feel like im not playing another mediocre game, but make me feel good to play it. I recommend this game if ur used to "grindy" type of games and/or played way too many of the "similar" games in recent years when it comes to the setting of which a game takes place. (and gameplay)
P.S. The world is just beautiful. It gives off like a "warm light" atmosphere tht just feels very calming and "happy" even with all the killing and gore.

(Look it up kiddos) You play as Boga Boga and you must stop the rival tribes from decimating you while you try and rebuild your own. Much in the Far Cry fashion you meet interesting characters such as balding chick who is fascinated with taking the ears of her enemies. The shaman who is constantly making you drink blood and getting you high as **** The dude who pisses on you, and a few more down the road. The villains however are vastly uninteresting to say the least. Unlike Far Cry 3 and 4 the villains in Primal are just there. You have a tribal leader who is a cannibal which the game attempts to have you pity him. Then some tribal leader who just likes to burn people alive for her God. You get three interactions with them a piece with all being brief and ultimately boring. The games story is boring it is just plain bad. There is nothing deep, nor crazy that has you wanting more. With this being in the caveman era I was hoping for more of a interesting new tale, and not just kill them because they are evil story.
The game looks beautiful. While some say that it is a semi different version of Far Cry 4’s map you’d be hard-pressed to realize that while playing. I couldn’t tell you if the voice acting is good or bad being that they don’t speak English. I personally love the fact they don’t, but I can see a lot of people in the camp of, “Read! What the **** I ain’t reading **** My argument against that is would you rather them have British accent or New York, or even better a surfer accent?

The gameplay is why I enjoy the hell out of this game. The combat is well… PRIMAL to say the least. You are either shooting arrow, using or throwing spears into people, or my personal favorite beating them to death with a club. Where the game truly shines is in the beast taming mechanic. Taming a beast means that other beast tend to **** off so you don’t get the horrible Far Cry thing of getting ****ed up by a badger. This game funny enough gets stupid easy the more you play, and I am perfectly okay with that. I hate it when you put 8+ hours into a game and the enemies just keep getting harder so you never feel like you’ve progressed at all. I love feeling like King **** of **** Mountain and making my enemies run in fear. The crafting can get tedious at times and constantly grabbing material can get annoying, but if you don’t mind it the gameplay is brutally phenomenal.

Overall the game is a great 14+ hour experience with a ton to do and explore. You just might want to put a podcast on while you play because it has no deep rich story to speak of, and you have to read it anyways. I enjoyed the hell out of this game it is so far the best thing I’ve played in Q1 of this year, but The Division comes out tomorrow so we’ll see. I give this a 4/5, if you like Far Cry but were on the fence about this game you should buy it you won’t be disappointed. To the others I highly recommend checking it out we rarely get games like this and it is so cool and interesting I want to see more of these kind of games out there. Ubisoft took a chance on this game and I hope they get a good return investment out of it.

Expand

If only Ubisoft Montreal had felt more confident in its wild gambit – if only it had gone further with the Stone Age concept – and we could have been looking at something special. Instead, we have a Far Cry game that feels fun in its familiarity, but is sadly lacking in many integral ways.
