Bit of a shame that folk are jumping on a hate driven bandwagon, since the game is a lot of fun. The Roanoke-style mystery at the core of the game is interesting, the base building from FO4 has a lot more context now people can visit them and the different areas all have their own interesting stuff going on.
Thankfully fans don't seem to need a metacritic score to validate their enjoyment.

Now for the people that put 0... buy the game and play it before submitting a review. People want the truth about the game not some story from someone who has never played.

I also blame Meta for allowing users to submit the review without reviewing the review first.

I don't miss the human NPCs you still get to learn all about the ones that WERE alive in the area. Sure there's some bugs, but none that have made the game unbearable or even annoying to play for me. If you like crafting, if you like survival, if you like adventure, if you like strategically hauling loot to your base or a shop, if you don't mind the idea of encountering evidence that other human beings exist in a geographic area the size of state...I'd recommend this game. I've met people online to play with, that I now play with regularly, and that's actually really nice. After all, one of Fallout 76's biggest boasts to date has been the concept of "doing it together" - the idea of having the game bring players together in a group to explore: which, for me, it certainly has done.

To be honest, if you're reading this with the actual hope of getting a fair opinion on the game, I'm not sure why so many people are upset with it at its launch (which is when I'm writing this). It's not a perfect game but it definitely doesn't deserve to be bombarded with 0s by folks who haven't, and who refuse to, play the game for themselves - which is why I'm giving it a 10. Why is it that a game made to bring players together, with seemingly good intentions, possesses so many people to act so negatively? As though to try and tear the community down before it even has a chance to walk.

I understand people wish it were a single player game and I'm pretty sure Bethesda has said that they'll continue to make single player games after Fallout 76. This game tries something different which, respectfully, is quite a brave thing to do.

Now, if you can't get by the idea of something which takes the road less traveled by then so be it; this game isn't for you and that's okay - but if you're welcome to new ideas and like the prospect of joining a community of players who are as well then Fallout 76 offers a unique opportunity: to emerge form the vault together.

Hope to see you in the wasteland!

What I really enjoy about the game (I've played 76 since the pre-BETA stress Test)

--Microtransactions - the ability to trade and barter with other Vault Dwellers adds a fun twist to the game, no more depending on just NPC merchants (which 76 does have)
--The vastness of Applachia - promises hours of game time with no repeat encounters
--Being able to join up with fellow Vault Dwellers to creat actual Fallout communities
--Crafting - being able to make literally anything and everything myself. You do need plans and blueprints
--Blueprinting - Once you build your palace/castle you can blueprint it so if you move your CAMP it can be rebuilt with ease.
--Moveable CAMP - A portable workstation to enables the Vault Dweller to have immediate access to literally any workstation or Basecamp feature on the go. You do need to pay caps to move once it's been built once.

It takes most things I've loved about the Fallout franchise and gives the player a new and interesting part of the wasteland to explore, which by the way is four times as large as the environment of Fallout4.

At first I was a little disappointed in that but there are two very good reasons for that, First: You are supposed to play with your friends! it was created to play together and my Wife and I are having a blast playing together and enjoy running into other players and figuring out if they are hostile or friendly and making new friends, It's great! Second: everyone died in the apocalypse! you are the first people to come out of the vault and need to rebuild, and they are true to that concept but there are still deep and emotional stories everywhere for you to find and experience, I find the stories of the people that lived and tried to survive after the bombs fell a very engaging story line for you AND your friends to find and talk about. in other multiplayer games when there is a NPC, what happens? a bunch of people are crowded around them and it breaks the emersion, I think this was a better way to do it and there are still robots that act as NPC's when necessary. please give this game a try, it is not really a single player experience (I wouldn't mind it) but if you wanted to play fallout 4 with your friends this is a great way for you to do it with and I think we are going to spend a lot of time really enjoying this game.

As someone who has loved and spent hundreds of hours in every Fallout title, I'm pleased to say that I truly love Fallout 76.

My favorite part of these games is exploration--digging through old buildings, finding holotapes, notes and terminal entries that tell compelling stories about a world before it was destroyed, or the stories of survivors. If you liked that part of the earlier titles, you'll love this game too. Fallout 76 takes that to a whole new level. The stories you find are more nuanced, more detailed, and lead you on a journey to find out more. Some are brief, others will lead you on a day long side quest. The dark, cynical humor is here, the depth is here--everything you expect from a Fallout game is here--it's just a little different than the others.

I've enjoyed the multiplayer encounters I've had, other players seem to be overwhelmingly friendly, but that's been a small part of my game so far. It may become more of a necessity later in the game, but with nearly 40 hours invested, playing solo hasn't been the problem that many feared.

Yes, this game has bugs, some are serious, most will just make you laugh. Yes, there are mechanical elements that need to be addressed and have been commented on ad nauseam, but nothing that's hampered my ability to have as much fun playing this game as any other Fallout game.

This game's problem isn't what it is, it's that it isn't what many expect or want it to be. It doesn't do things that other games do--even though it's easy to assume it will. It's not an MMO, it's not a traditional RPG, it's not a PvP battle royale...it's something that kind of touches all of those things but doesn't neatly fit into a category. That surely leaves some people feeling disappointed, but I think it's a good thing. I've had nothing but good experiences with Fallout 76.

I've loved this series since the very beginning. Yes, even the action-RPG Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. I've played them all to death, and I can say with complete confidence... I'm having as much fun exploring post-apocalyptic West Virginia as I've had everywhere else the series has taken me.

In some ways, Fallout 76 is the best one so far, in my opinion. Since it's online-only, there's no pause feature, so I better find a fairly safe place to hide when I need to step away from my Xbox for a minute. More than once, I've returned to find that some beastie has turned me into a snack. It's intense.

They've included many of the Survival Mode features from Fallout: New Vegas as mandatory game requirements in 76, and that adds another layer of intensity. Instead of providing a pile of groceries to sell for caps, you now have to scavenge for and craft food and drink to consume, or your hunger and thirst will weaken you and eventually get you killed. Ammo now has weight, so you can't stockpile bullets and cells without taking a serious hit to your Action Points as you explore. I love it.

The crafting has been expanded, and because I'm a natural born hoarder in games like this, I just can't get enough of this change. If it isn't nailed down, I'm taking it and making something cool with it. =D

But probably my favorite change is to the game world itself. It's easily the most vibrant wasteland in the series and the abundance of color reminds me so much of Oblivion's game world, another welcome change from the oppressing grays and browns of the last few games. In addition, they've greatly varied the lighting levels - many indoor areas are so dark that you're all but forced to use your Pip-Boy light... which makes you a monster magnet, adding yet another layer of intensity.

It all adds up to a fantastic experience, in my book. It's not trying to be Fortnite and I wouldn't be playing it if it was. I can't wait to see what they add, if Elder Scrolls Online is any precedent!

That said, I feel compelled to finish my review by asking the zero-score bombers one simple question and then setting some things straight...

What did you think you were getting?

Bethesda made it very clear from the beginning what Fallout 76 would be: A vast desolate post-apocalyptic exploration game with online multiplayer features in place of the previous games' NPC interactions, set in the hills and valleys of West Virginia, while still enabling the wonderfully lonely solo play we all know and love - and that's exactly what we got.

Enjoy the game or go play something you do like. Fallout is the game it has been since 2008. Stop with the hate already.

It uses a similar style to Fallout 4 because it's development began close to Fallout 4's release. No NPCs except robots is kind of weird, but the stories in the holotapes include a wonderful story and increment lore. It is a new experience. I have not had any game-breaking bugs, any unplayable experiences, any hatred towards an aspect of the game, and have had fun alone and with my friends. Play the game for more than 5 minutes instead of blindly judging it. In fact, many of the reviews on this are people blaming the company and calling them EA or Activision. That is ridiculous. "A quick cash grab" and "Micro-transaction hungry" is just a lie. The amount of work that went into this game is huge, so it's definitely not a "quick cash grab", and the Atoms Shop? It's literally all visual. No advantage is given from buying outfits or facepaints, and they can all be found in-game. It has a story, one we all share an experience with, the amount of research and implementation made on the new enemies and on the lore of West Virginia definitely shows, Mods will be a thing, I don't know who started the "No mods" statement but they are wrong.

Bethesda have taken a different approach to Fallout with the latest installment release. Instead of guiding you on the path to rebuilding the world after nuclear armageddon they have given every player the freedom to explore the world at his/her own pace. I truly believe Fallout 76 is a magnificent concept, being able to interact with others while exploring the glowing mysteries of Appalachia. NPCs from previous Fallout games were really well done and helped with immersion to a certain extent but having such a big map populated just with AI is dull for a 2018 game, especially Fallout. With Fallout 76, the story is scattered around the map for players to piece together, just like a puzzle. I think this sort of challenge is great but it certainly isn't as appealing to everyone that played previous Fallout games, especially Fallout 4. I believe that one of the most important aspects of this game is that the current concept caters mostly to hardcore fans due to the amount of planning, strategy and patience one must have in order to succeed.
The online world of Fallout has a huge amount of potential for diversification, which I am really looking forward to.
The Fallout 76 in game community is amazing and I can genuinely say that I've never seen before people that are so helpful even though they don't have anything to gain. Sure, there are a few griefers but that is to be expected from an online game with such a big fan base.
In terms of gameplay I must say that the graphics have definitely improved since Fallout 4 but there are quite a few glitches and bugs which I hope will be fixed in the future. Sometimes there are also performance issues such as freezes and crashes but they don't happen as often as they did during B.E.T.A.
Overall I can say that I love the new approach Bethesda has taken with Fallout and even though it might take a little while for everything to be the way the devs want to, I'm sure the journey ahead is going to be epic. Kudos Bethesda!

There are also plenty of npcs, though they are not human, they are still quest giving npcs. What does it matter whether they are human or not? I also have never hit the 400 stash limit despite me being the main camp builder on our team. Its called inventory management. You scrap your junk and it decreases the weight immensely. And you still have plenty of room for collecting legendary weapons. You also learn not to get too attatched to items you will never use, and just sell or scrap them. There are bugs here and there that I have encountered, but they are mostly visual and do not effect gameplay, it actually gives me a laugh. I was there, but I got the game and dove in and have no regrets. My original favorite game is Wasteland on the AppleII. When I first saw Fallout (1) on a shelf, I got it and played way too much on a computer barely able to run it. I have played every Fallout game at launch, and the franchise has a special place in my heart, despite studio changes.

I can understand why most reviews are so poor-- our culture of convenience has filled most people with an undeserved sense of complacent entitlement. Look closer at this franchise entry itself : it has an amazing setting with an incredibly detailed environment. The enemy design and animations are first-rate. The sound, both environmental and incidental, are awesome. The controls are intuitive and easy to master. The game mechanics are deep and intriguing. The crafting system is character-life-saving. I love designing and maintaining my camp, with noone imploring me to go save another settlement, and then popping the head off of a super mutant with one perfectly placed shot.

There are no human npcs currently. So what? This is an online survival grind, and it is at the top of its class. The missions and quests currently in the game are well written and a pleasure to pursue. Interaction online with other humans can be as in-depth or hermitly as you desire. Exploring the backstory of the Fallout mythos has been, and is an ongoing, blast. Bethesda Fallout games are about world design and game mechanics. Anyone playing a Bethesda game for the narrative needs to critically re-examine their expectations. The narrative exists only to drive exploration, and Fallout 76 already has the exploration niche covered.

Most poor reviews seem to be about missed expectations. A product needs to be judged on its own merits. On its own merits, Fallout 76 has been the most fun I've had in a Fallout game since the original. I enjoy the challenge of surviving every day on my own personal merits, with no hand-holding, and relish emerging from an hours-long schlog through a pre-fall ruin with a bag full of schwag and resources.

I have been dropped from servers a few times, and the game has frozen a few times, but that is the nature of an MMORPG, which this is. This is not like previous single-player Fallout entries, and expectations must be tailored.

If you are still on the fence, please give the game a chance. If someday some quiet hermit passes by and drops you a bag of plans and recipes, it's probably me. If you've already abandoned the ruins, it just means more battered clipboards and desk fans for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you liked Fallout 4 for the missions and crafting, you should like this game. I have been playing it non-stop since I bought it and I love it! There ARE problems... you will bet get disconnected from the server sometimes; however, it will put you right back where you were with everything you had. If you were "inside" a quest site, it will put you outside.

I have the regular XBOX One and I don't experience or really notice that much lag or frame degradation - perfectly playable.

There are no NPC's, but a huge part of Fallout 4 used tapes and robots to move the story along, so it isn't that bad. I think they did a good job with telling the stories and integrating everything. So, there are a lot of quests with multiple parts that I found very interesting.

I play alone, but I often interact with others. We trade things from time to time; I help people who get killed when I find them; and I work with others to complete missions. I am NOT part of a group with them, but simply working together at the same time. I keep the sound of others off and never hear them. There ARE a few grievers out there. I feel sorry for them as they don't know how to interact normally with people - bless their hearts! Be sure you set your settings so you don't accidentally
shoot them, and you can ignore them for the session. You can also just log off and log back on.

What I enjoy most is that there is a sense of danger to the world. For example, I was about level 12 and walking along a very quiet and nice highway. I noticed a couple of eyes quite a bit ways up ahead of me and hit my V.A.T.S. to see what it was -- it was a Level 35 Mothman!! Yikes! I took a different route. This reminded me so much of SKYRIM and walking right into a Dragon one time that was just randomly sitting on the road. Don't worry about the leveling though; if you follow the main quest line, you will find things appropriate to your level. You will also find some things you aren't ready for, so stay alert!

They have fixed quite a few of the things that were initially a problem in the beta. They increased the storage to 600 lbs. To be honest, managing that is kind of fun and it's a part of the game; you don't actually need all that stuff!! You will find it all over and find it very quickly. The monster spawning is now just about right; I finish areas all the time way before they re-spawn again. When someone else enters the area, the monsters DO come back, but the other person is there to help clean things up. Just work together for a bit and then keep on truckin'.

I gave the game a 10 based on whether I want to play it non-stop or not. I can't wait to get back to the game and find some more cool gear or just wander around aimlessly and seeing what happens next. You can't go very far before you either find something or something finds you!

People missed out on this game when jumping on the hate bandwagon. Great world building and fun online leads to the best exploration with friends would have in any game. Sure its different but that was known going in.

It's funny how a game I hated turned out to be one of the most fun I've played in years, the game has improved a lot since launch and is packed with content these days.

Surprisingly a great game! Vast ruined world to explore + incredible amount of base structures/items/outfits/weapons/quests well.. content. Explore and survive as you will. PS Still the supermutants were created a bit later)

I've been playing since the beta and still love the game. It's a blast to play - the amount of content, world complexity and general fun coming from this game honestly cannot be compared to no other vidya. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who liked the franchise till now, but was on the fence due to the negativity campaign towards this product. It's a quality game with amazing community.

As a multiplayer-focused entry in the series, it's only natural that the focus be on the interactions between players. Fortunately, the game does this exactly as it should. PVP is highly opt-in, and harassers can easily be blocked. For those wanting the thrill and uncertainty of full PVP, 76 offers a "Hunter vs Hunted" radio station that makes listeners bounty targets against one-another, allowing them to go full "most dangerous game" among themselves, never knowing if the next person they meet is just a traveler, or a bounty hunter out for their head. Friends can be joined easily, and you can freely fast travel to your teammates' general area, so with no tethering, co-op is truly a joy for anyone who has ever wished they had a companion smart enough to use strategy and tactics. Meanwhile, the core gameplay is still Fallout through and through. If you've played Fallout 4, you'll be able to hit the ground running, though 76 brings enough improvements and refinements to make something new.

The gunplay is solid, and real-time VATS (the aim assist that Bethesda created to simulate the tactical limb targeting of the earliest entries in the series) works surprisingly well. However, melee in particular feels more satisfying and effective this time around, which is good because for once survival mechanics are baked into the core design, and you will absolutely find yourself running out of ammo. Fortunately, the rest of the survival package has been toned down from Fallout 4's box of annoyances, to something that still acts as a motivator, but isn't a constant hassle.

Showcasing the survival aspect of 76's design, the game now features full crafting, making the building of weapons, armor, and ammo available without the need for mods, along with chem crafting and cooking, the latter of which has become more useful with a widely expanded library of recipes, the need to process food to avoid illness, and thirst and hunger mechanics in general. Not that you'd realize that off the bat. Most of 76's recipes are locked at the beginning of the game, requiring that they be purchased from merchants, found in the world, or in the case of weapon upgrades learned by breaking down weapons of the type they're for (which gives an extra reason to pick up all those spare weapons lying around). In addition, weapon condition has returned to the series, giving more use to the junk that you'll accumulate over the course of your journey, rather than it being solely for building up endless settlements that contribute nothing to the game.

In truth, "settlements" actually do contribute something this time around. The player is given a personal "C.A.M.P." that can be placed in the world to give not only a build location, but a free fast-travel point. Claiming fixed-location workshops will also give a player access to special resource nodes, which can be set with automated harvesters. Some resource nodes can also be found in the wild, and automated if they fall within the player's C.A.M.P., but the workshops generally have a higher concentration of nodes, and may even contain special nodes for extracting high-value resources, some of which can only be obtained through automation - such as fusion cores from a power plant. However, at time of writing workshops currently reset when offline, and automation requires a substantial investment of resources. So workshops are currently really just a convenience option for high-level players, and most real building will be done through your C.A.M.P. - not so bad, given many people didn't care about the build mode in Fallout 4. Though if you do care, both the C.A.M.P. and fixed settlements offer occasional defense events, as well as the possibility of having to fend off raids from other players...but at least you can lock your doors and windows.

Fallout 76 also brings a lot that's new to the table. West Virginia has striking new visuals and a host of new enemy types, only one of which is lifted directly from Skyrim. Weapon and armor variety is at a high, and many returning items seem to have more modification options this time around (once you unlock them). Clothing has more variety as well, though it has become purely cosmetic. Headgear is also a fashion choice now, though some items do offer mechanical benefits, such as a gas mask, head lamp, or in one case access to a particular quest.

Yes, quest. Fallout 76, contrary to popular belief, still has quests, and a surprising variety of them - from Civil War reenactments to solving a decades-old kidnapping, and much more. It also has NPCs, if you consider robots and super mutants to be people. Given that many of them have interesting personalities in 76, you really should.

All that said, at time of writing there are sometimes missing objects or other noticeable bugs. However, Bethesda is actively patching the game, so these aren't permanent issues.

My own impressions(not review since you know, I'm only 25 hours in):
There is definitely valid criticism for FO76 (like any game) but from my experience, its been tons of fun and surprisingly stable (bugs and all during BETA).

My background: 25+ years of gaming, 10 years of modding. My ideal Bethesda multiplayer experience has always been a 4-6 cooperative experience. FO76 went a little bigger than I expected which is good and bad. I'm 95% a PC player but this recently got an Xbox One for RDR2 and FO76 because my friends are on console.

Before I continue, anyone saying that some multiplayer wasn't a request by the fans is dead wrong. Quote from 2011 before Skyrim release from Todd Howard: "The two most requested features we get are dragons and multiplayer. We got one of them this time!”

Also, if you understand game development. Multiplayer is extremely hard to develop, especially when its a hybrid singleplayer/multiplayer experience and as complex as most Bethesda games. There is a reason why most companies don't attempt it and split the genre.

    Pros:
-Massive map with lots of content. I've explored maybe 5% of the game with 25 hours in. Now that BETA is over, I will likely take my time so there is tons of content out there. Does not feel repetitive so far and each area feels fresh and unique. Lots of detail! View Distance is amazing.

-Multiplayer within the Creation Engine (and all its pros/cons). The reason I love that they implemented multiplayer in the creation engine is that it feels and plays like a genuine Bethesda game but now with multiplayer vs making an entirely new engine and essentially separate game.

-Lots of quests. The quests have lots of content and voice acting but its tough to listen to all of it when you're with friends. If you're soloing though, there is plenty of content here to get enveloped in the story/lore.

-Private servers for all, Modding support for PC, the sky is the limit! Bethesda has been allowing heavy modding in their games for over a decade. Bethesda said full private custom servers for FO76 will be supported and that means anything you don't currently like about the game, could be essentially modded in with the heavy lifting of multiplayer implementation DONE.

-Crafting/Base Building: Lots to craft and lots to build. Both systems work well and have been expanded since FO4.

    Cons:

-UI/Sorting needs more work: These are minor but frustrating when trying to organize your inventory. I expect it to get some improvements overtime.

-Stash Limits: Though there are ways to mitigate it, the current limit too small and needs to be expanded in an intuitive way. Bethesda said they are going to do this eventually.

-Performance issues (Xbox One S): Though this has gotten better since BETA, I feel like there is room for improvement. On one hand, I love that Bethesda doesn't hold back. A horde of enemy AI IS a horde of enemy AI but when your frame rate dips its hard to enjoy it. Hopefully they can find the sweet spot in highly dense areas.

Overall, this feels like a Bethesda open world experience with Friends though a bit watered down which was expected given the work to add multiplayer (modding support is key here). This is some of the most fun I've had in a game in some time. I've always dreamed of playing a Bethesda game with friends and I feel like they captured that completely.

So far this is one of the funnest Fallout games to date and it's actually quite hard to pull myself away from it. It's not a perfect game though, but none really are and it isn't the best Fallout game out there either.

Does this game have bugs? Yes it does, but nothing game breaking and nothing that can't be fixed .

If you've enjoyed any of the Bethesda Fallout games and go in with an open mind, as a fan not looking to be negative like so many others, but looking to enjoy yourself, you'll have a great time.

    Highly recommend.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I challenge those leaving 0 and 1s to show us videos of their gameplay because im gonna call them out on their BS. These are fake reviews. I spent 20 hours playing the game and found a number of bugs and issues yes, but none as game breaking as these whining little brats want to let on. Let me break down bugs i saw. (Unable to find world): simple reset fixed it. Mission objectives not showing up. Reset fixed. Massive lag in certain areas (simple reset again). Seeing a common feature here? Same thing all other MMOs suffer from with half the whining. You dont like the game we get it, stop leaving fake reviews and go play your barbie games. This game is not for everyone. Personally i hate having to watch over my shoulder when looting junk because some random guy can kill you for it. Easy fix though...avoid people like you would in reality and drop the gear in your stash every chance you get. Easy fix.
    Pros:
    Graphics are really good.
Gameplay is fun but can get monotonous over time
Combat is from FO4 which some are familiar with
    Leveling up system
    Cons:
    Bugs
    Leveling up system
Players can kill you for any reason

I can go on for more cons and pros but this was mostly to show yhe game is not as bad as the whiney naysayers are claiming it to be. $60 for it is not bad.

I will have to admit though in listening to the complaints of experienced users I am tempted and probably will try out Fallout 4. For now though I will probably spend my time off over this Thanksgiving holiday of 2018 playing in the world of Fallout 76 and maybe once I am more experience I too will find and discover how terrible this game truly is but for now... There is room for improvment with storage limits, and more friendly NPCa, but so far its been a blast.

But it’s hard to feel as if you’re truly affecting the world when there are no NPCs to express satisfaction or disdain, or to be directly influenced by your actions. Even killing feels hollow. Some of my best battles in Fallout 4 came when I stumbled across an outpost and found there a raider in there; he’d yell and scream at me as we were facing off. The Scorched, while armed, feel like nothing more than zombies.

The addition of multiplayer feels as though it comes at the expense of Fallout’s memorable story-driven moments. What good is a vast map full of players if they're given little to no purpose? When no other players are around, the game’s world feels almost empty. The attention-grabbing locales and landmarks add to Appalachia's charm, but it's difficult to not wish for living, breathing characters to inhabit it. Post-apocalyptic West Virginia is described as a wasteland, and this term paints an inadvertent but accurate picture of what Fallout 76 is right now.

If you enjoy multiplayer games of this type and are willing to overlook the engine anomalies, you may find yourself rapidly addicted to the game's exploration density and loot systems. If you're easily frustrated by bugs and issues, you may want to sit tight a bit to see what Bethesda does to polish things up, cus oh boy, it could use a bit right now. If you're a fan of the single player, branching narrative the series is known for, you'll want to wait for Fallout 5.
