For a Ratalaika port, Even the Ocean on the Xbox One is a true hidden gem. Part platforming and part deep, engrossing story, it's a real surprise. Aliph is thrown into the deep end in her new job and surrounding her is a supporting cast that is extremely well-written.

Even The Ocean has some good ideas within, from the polarising energy mechanic to the OK platforming. But it all feels like it’s trying too hard to wrangle a heavy tale out and as such end up bogged down under characters that waffle on for too long, and boring interludes between levels that add very little to the experience.

Even the Ocean is a narrative action plat-former about balancing the Light and Dark energies that hold the world together. Interestingly, ifEven the Ocean is a narrative action plat-former about balancing the Light and Dark energies that hold the world together. Interestingly, if you're not too bothered about the action or puzzling, you'll be able to do a "story-only" run-through of Even the Ocean. The inverse is a 'gameplay'-only run is also possible, as is the more traditional both-at-once approach. As much as I enjoy the story, it’s important to focus on the gameplay, because Even the Ocean isn’t a visual novel in the end. It’s very much a puzzle based plat-former. There's Even The Ocean is what it is and that's not necessarily a bad thing.. I've been keen to watch the story play out once I've finished the game. Expand
