Elite: Dangerous, well to start off... its an addicting game. Towards the beginning when Elite: Dangerous was launched in "Xbox Game Preview" (an early access program like Steam Early Access), I bought the game for $30 dollars and it had quite of few bugs, and crashes to the dashboard to the point where most players couldn't play the game for 5 minutes straight. But a few weeks laterElite: Dangerous, well to start off... its an addicting game. But a few weeks later (within the last week of July of 2015), the game got patched/updated and then the game became addicting/playable again. Like always if its in Beta, the game will always be filled with glitches and bugs.

Note: This game isn't for everyone. You have to grind a lot (mainly for CR, in-game credits) and you have to visit a lot of space stations in order to upgrade your ship. Why? Because every space station is different. Not all of them have the same parts/upgrades, they don't have the same ships to buy, they don't sell the same commodities (for example like food, water, guns, etc..), and they all have different bulletin boards to do different contract missions.

Elite: Dangerous has a few unique features that I personally like; for one its the integration with the Xbox friends-lists in the Comm's Panel in the top left of your games screen. From the Comm's Panel you can invite friends to your "Wing"; team up to kill other players and/or AI's who have bounty's, go mining (and have your extra friends to be body guards), and steal cargo from other players. Best of all, you can go on a killing spree, become wanted and have a bounty on your own ship/head so other players can take you out. You basically have the game to your own will and do whatever you want in it. Next is the customization, customizing your ship is the second best part in this game. One day you can go from smuggling cargo from a port to a station, and then a few hours later you can go mining and sell the metals/minerals you gathered for high value and upgrade your ship or buy a new one. Best of all, you can visit the center of the Universe... but note that it will takes weeks (sometimes months) just to travel to the center.... it depends on the ship you have and also the upgrades you have on it.

For one, I love the community of Elite: Dangerous. They are really supportive with new players on the
Xbox One version subreddit of Elite: Dangerous via /r/EliteOne and they will help everyone if you are new to Elite: Dangerous or a PC veteran trying to figure out the controller controls. And then there is another community/group called the "Fuel Rats" (they were PC focused based, but now also on Xbox One). What are they? They are real Commanders/Players that help out other Commanders if they are stranded or ran out of fuel in-game for free. They are always on standby and will help you no matter what. You can check them out here: fuelrats.org or /r/FuelRats.

In conclusion, if you do plan on getting this game. I highly recommend for you to do the tutorials so you can understand the game, how to fly the ship, and also understand the useful controls on "A, B, X, Y" when holding them down because they have different things tied to each button. Next, fidel with the flight controls to find the perfect combination because in the beginning they are hard to master but later on you will become a Pro. Lastly, have fun... invite friends or find new friends via the Frontier forums or the /r/EliteOne subreddit. The game doesn't have a story-line. You make your own story.

Elite: Dangerous is a difficult game with a steep learning curve that not everyone will enjoy, BUT if you are interested in space dramas, science fiction, astrophysics or astrobiology, and science in general...it may well be a game you end up putting hundreds of hours into.

Let me start with the difficult stuff. First and foremost, don't come to this game expecting it to be Mass Effect. There are some similarities in the space travel, but otherwise the two franchises are very different. ELITE DANGEROUS DOES NOT HAVE A STORY. You make the story by how you play it.

Second, the controls take some getting used to. Absolutely do the Tutorial Missions before jumping into the main game. Once you get the hang of the controls, the game becomes much more enjoyable, but expect 10-30 minutes of frustration depending on how fast you learn things.

Finally, at least for the present, the player never really leaves their ship. So don't expect (at this time), to be able to get out and walk around. Planetary Landings are a feature coming soon, so it's likely this will change with time.

As for the positives, there are MANY. You can choose how you play, first of all. Want to be a pirate, or a bounty hunter? Sure. Want to steer clear of combat for awhile? Be a trader or an explorer, totally viable ways to make cash without risking getting blowed up.

And this is where Elite: Dangerous really got me. The game is set in a 1:1 version of the Milky Way Galaxy. There are 400 billion star systems in the Milky Way. There are 400 billion star systems in Elite: Dangerous. Want to travel to Sagittarius A, the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy? You can do that (although it will take you a loooong time...25,000 light years is a long way!

In short, if you like space, play this game!

May be the most profound gaming experience of my life, mechanically and philosophically including my stacks of table tops.

You never leave your space craft, there is no story. Just humanity spiraling out into the galaxy, posting wish lists of executions and lawbreaking. It is brilliant.

While flying through the vast, I find myself pining, “Humanity is so close to understanding its true purpose.” Though I’m not certain how many will leave the cusp: Too busy executing one another and passing laws, I suppose.

    A great game.
It's not the action packed escapade they'd want you to think it is. In that regard, it's a bit misleading. Yes, there are large battles you can be a part of, but a good portion of the game is spent traveling, earning cash, and politics. It's more fun than it sounds, but not as exciting as it could be, I suppose.

Size, this is the biggest game that I have ever had the pleasure of playing, you could speed weeks traveling and not even scratch the surface of what is already in the game!
When you start keep your first ship and just go out flying to figure out controls and how everything works and feels. If you die it doesn't cost you anything so have fun with it, oh and stay in solo play so you don't end up in the cross hairs of a human controlled pirate.

    It's...freaking AMAZING.

Even if i wasn't an astrophysics dork, or a sci-fi dork, or a gamer, or the trillion other random qualities that predispose me to something like this, none of this contributes to the score. It's something more. Something i thought i'd experienced for the last time when i discovered Morrowind 900,000yrs ago:

    A genuine sense of awe.

One of the most impressive aspects of Elite: Dangerous is the size and scale of the game. The one real problem I have with the game is actually its' size. (I know I just said its' also one of the best parts) Very rarely will you ever see anyone else in the game if you play online. It honestly gets very repetitive at times. Also, the majority of the solar systems you can travel to don't even have a place you can dock your ship, making them virtually useless. We are literally talking millions of solar systems that don't really do anything. I guess this isn't really the game for you if you enjoy action packed intense gameplay all the time. Expand

Millions of light years of space to go and play in! ...What could be better? Answer? ...An on-line version with millions of light years to go and play in! From those original wire-frame ships to today's fully detailed and almost cine-graphic detailing, to the 4 BILLION solar systems to explore, in one galaxy, this game has adventures just hard-wired into it. Subsequent expansions and patches are a feature of the experience, as new, real-world astro-physics and astrological data is added to the software, to make your journey through the cosmos as real and visceral an experience as possible.
The developers, Frontier Developments, are a relatively small operation, run by genuine enthusiasts, and due to their location, in Cambridge, UK, have access to research from the world class scientists and facilities, close at hand. They have built a MONSTER of an experience, partly due to crowd funding, and with what they have to work with, have produced a phenomenal body of work. This 'game', and I'm not sure that is the best pigeon-hole to put Elite Dangerous into, is so imersive and will appeal to the blood-thirsty space pirate, the lowly trader, the explorer, and now, with the latest expansions, the Space Cruiser/sight-seeing adventurers in us all. This is probably the ultimate survival/adventure experience (again, not happy calling this 'thing' a Game!) available, with stunning graphics and an amazing online community with whom to draw support, advice, and wing-men from. Whether you are PC or Console, this is a MUST HAVE part of your game collection! I must now get back to my ship, as those jobs all have deadlines and mine are fast approaching! See you on the dark side!

Elite Dangerous offers gamers a seemingly unlimited amount of gameplay, and this is reinforced when you settle in and see how titanic the scale and size of the game environment actually is with the amount of possibilities and opportunities that are provided.

Staying true to its genre Elite Dangerous provides a great sense of freedom in a universe where the player’s choices dictate his progression in the game. It may take some time to get accustomed to the controls and the general functions of the game but once you get the hang of it you’ll experience something unique. It is unfortunate that the experience is held back by an extremely poor tutorial and constant disconnects.
