Horribly complex, tutorials are almost useless, Missions when you start are far too hard, penalties for dying are draconian, grind is insane and the only content of the game.
    Insane simulator with horrid tutorials.

I discovered the beta version today. Was actually rather coincidence because space simulations are too tough and boring for me. I notice that in this game as well, but it looks chic.
Handling etc. needs a longer training and the tutorial is too short.
As a newcomer, you are overwhelmed with the controls.

I was expecting this game to be a lot more fun than it was. I wasted $60 on a flight simulator that promised space combat on the box and didn't mention the hour it takes to get to the one battle.
The tutorial consists of "It's that button there" with no indicator of which button to press (no highlights or anything).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ready for the most concise and recent review of this 'game'? After all the expansions and DLC Here it is with some foreword first. Skip the first sentences if you'd like.

I loved space sim and space combat games, even playing Elite when I was younger, to Battlezone, Hardwar, Terminus, EVE and everything in between. This is just boring. I am very lucky I won a new copy on eBay really cheap, so I'm not bitter about the cost, i've bought plenty of duds before.

The game is pleasant and beautiful in terms of sound design, [most] visuals and has a good concept, I really wanted this to be a good game but it just edges out some of the worse games i've played. The learning curve for this game can take from hours to a few days, and once you get the hang of it, it is for naught. That is of course if you can get past the overly complex controls, it's like meshing together 4 different games controls at once by use of combinations.
There is a near complete absence of any story or some type of motivation to play the game. If you thought driving to 'A' to get 'B' to get 'C' to return to 'A' in some other types of game was bad, or the grinding of games like Destiny, or Tom Clancy games was bad, you really have no idea how much worse it could be, you will find it here. So along with having no compelling story (only text information received at space stations), there is the arduous task of traveling between star systems. You'd think are 3300C.E. there would be a more efficient "light speed"/super-cruise system. It takes FOREVER, it can and does take HOURS of real time to travel back to the Sol System (Earth's) once you even have the ability to do so. You have to make jumps, around 25 of them to get to Earth from where the game starts. Each one is ridiculously tedious and requires you to actually use a little ship computer to set it all up. In doing so, you have to access a 'Galaxy Map' which is buggy, and not streamlined into the dashboard of the ship, after setting your course and engaging in a repetitive behavior for about a few hours, you get to travel to other star systems and see planets, can't land on it of course. You can land only on big empty planets with no atmospheres (*cough* easier on the developer to do this) and some have really small, poor excuses for settlements/outposts. These are inactive, they are static, there are not moving vehicles, people, etc. Nothing, hence pointless to do so. During your travels you will have to dock with a space station frequently and if you don't have the hang of it, it can take anywhere from 2 minutes if you've had practice, to about 20 without, and thats if you make it in without destroying your ship and paying a fee to restore [most of] it. The only activities to engage in are trading/smuggling, combat/piracy and mining/exploration. The trading part is fine, just like any other space sim, the mining yields so little, is so clunky and you have to use little time limited robots to retrieve things or "scoop" it up with your ship. Takes forever to get enough stuff to sell, if it turns out to be worth anything. The biggest failure. Only first person view during combat and radar blips, the controls being so complex and the ship dynamics as well/physics make this task ridiculous. I had to play the game for weeks to practice in order to beat a training mission, that is how screwy it is (Wonder why only 0.86% of players on Xbox Live got the achievement for completing the training missions that you can play at any time, there are only 6 and each should be about 5 minutes long). The weapons are nearly silent and have no effects/unimpressive light flashes, smoke. Doesn't have any "meaty" feeling when you hit something, no satisfaction except when a ship explodes, and even that is not very spectacular. Most of the ships dashboards/HUDs take up most of the screen space and on top of that, the ships are really boxy and ugly (search for an example picture), with only a couple for use in combat. If you want to make the ships look better, you have to pay real world money for that, which is fine, if they included an option for more than ONE COLOR! 500 Frontier points costs about $8 U.S. and each thing you purchase costs at least 200-400. You do the math. This game has a feel of a barebones set up, almost as if the developers made it in their spare time and then decided to market it, only to sell you more stuff later (DLC that doesn't bring very much). I promise you, you will spend most of your time flying pointlessly (once you learn how, the learning curve takes some time) to get to A and to B and to C, with no story, nothing to motivate you except getting in-game credits, buying new ships and doing the same thing. There are no player impacts in the game, the universe is empty and boring (Simulator is the right term) with no big wars, no real conflict, and no endgame scenario, it quite simply is the biggest grinding experience and time-waste of a game you will play.

Elite: Dangerous, well to start off... its an addicting game. Towards the beginning when Elite: Dangerous was launched in "Xbox Game Preview" (an early access program like Steam Early Access), I bought the game for $30 dollars and it had quite of few bugs, and crashes to the dashboard to the point where most players couldn't play the game for 5 minutes straight. But a few weeks laterElite: Dangerous, well to start off... its an addicting game. But a few weeks later (within the last week of July of 2015), the game got patched/updated and then the game became addicting/playable again. Like always if its in Beta, the game will always be filled with glitches and bugs.

Note: This game isn't for everyone. You have to grind a lot (mainly for CR, in-game credits) and you have to visit a lot of space stations in order to upgrade your ship. Why? Because every space station is different. Not all of them have the same parts/upgrades, they don't have the same ships to buy, they don't sell the same commodities (for example like food, water, guns, etc..), and they all have different bulletin boards to do different contract missions.

Elite: Dangerous has a few unique features that I personally like; for one its the integration with the Xbox friends-lists in the Comm's Panel in the top left of your games screen. From the Comm's Panel you can invite friends to your "Wing"; team up to kill other players and/or AI's who have bounty's, go mining (and have your extra friends to be body guards), and steal cargo from other players. Best of all, you can go on a killing spree, become wanted and have a bounty on your own ship/head so other players can take you out. You basically have the game to your own will and do whatever you want in it. Next is the customization, customizing your ship is the second best part in this game. One day you can go from smuggling cargo from a port to a station, and then a few hours later you can go mining and sell the metals/minerals you gathered for high value and upgrade your ship or buy a new one. Best of all, you can visit the center of the Universe... but note that it will takes weeks (sometimes months) just to travel to the center.... it depends on the ship you have and also the upgrades you have on it.

For one, I love the community of Elite: Dangerous. They are really supportive with new players on the
Xbox One version subreddit of Elite: Dangerous via /r/EliteOne and they will help everyone if you are new to Elite: Dangerous or a PC veteran trying to figure out the controller controls. And then there is another community/group called the "Fuel Rats" (they were PC focused based, but now also on Xbox One). What are they? They are real Commanders/Players that help out other Commanders if they are stranded or ran out of fuel in-game for free. They are always on standby and will help you no matter what. You can check them out here: fuelrats.org or /r/FuelRats.

In conclusion, if you do plan on getting this game. I highly recommend for you to do the tutorials so you can understand the game, how to fly the ship, and also understand the useful controls on "A, B, X, Y" when holding them down because they have different things tied to each button. Next, fidel with the flight controls to find the perfect combination because in the beginning they are hard to master but later on you will become a Pro. Lastly, have fun... invite friends or find new friends via the Frontier forums or the /r/EliteOne subreddit. The game doesn't have a story-line. You make your own story.

Elite: Dangerous is a difficult game with a steep learning curve that not everyone will enjoy, BUT if you are interested in space dramas, science fiction, astrophysics or astrobiology, and science in general...it may well be a game you end up putting hundreds of hours into.

Let me start with the difficult stuff. First and foremost, don't come to this game expecting it to be Mass Effect. There are some similarities in the space travel, but otherwise the two franchises are very different. ELITE DANGEROUS DOES NOT HAVE A STORY. You make the story by how you play it.

Second, the controls take some getting used to. Absolutely do the Tutorial Missions before jumping into the main game. Once you get the hang of the controls, the game becomes much more enjoyable, but expect 10-30 minutes of frustration depending on how fast you learn things.

Finally, at least for the present, the player never really leaves their ship. So don't expect (at this time), to be able to get out and walk around. Planetary Landings are a feature coming soon, so it's likely this will change with time.

As for the positives, there are MANY. You can choose how you play, first of all. Want to be a pirate, or a bounty hunter? Sure. Want to steer clear of combat for awhile? Be a trader or an explorer, totally viable ways to make cash without risking getting blowed up.

And this is where Elite: Dangerous really got me. The game is set in a 1:1 version of the Milky Way Galaxy. There are 400 billion star systems in the Milky Way. There are 400 billion star systems in Elite: Dangerous. Want to travel to Sagittarius A, the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy? You can do that (although it will take you a loooong time...25,000 light years is a long way!

In short, if you like space, play this game!

You never leave your space craft, there is no story. Just humanity spiraling out into the galaxy, posting wish lists of executions and lawbreaking. It is brilliant.

While flying through the vast, I find myself pining, “Humanity is so close to understanding its true purpose.” Though I’m not certain how many will leave the cusp: Too busy executing one another and passing laws, I suppose.

    A great game.
It's not the action packed escapade they'd want you to think it is. In that regard, it's a bit misleading. Yes, there are large battles you can be a part of, but a good portion of the game is spent traveling, earning cash, and politics. It's more fun than it sounds, but not as exciting as it could be, I suppose.

The one real problem I have with the game is actually its' size. (I know I just said its' also one of the best parts) Very rarely will you ever see anyone else in the game if you play online. It honestly gets very repetitive at times. Also, the majority of the solar systems you can travel to don't even have a place you can dock your ship, making them virtually useless. We are literally talking millions of solar systems that don't really do anything. I guess this isn't really the game for you if you enjoy action packed intense gameplay all the time. Expand

For me, I wanted to love it (bought both the PC and Xbone versions) but just couldn't get into it due to some glaring flaws that hinder it's playability. The thing is, I'm pretty much the target audience for a sandbox space exploration game where you create your own story.
So, the premise of this game is that you are given a starting ship that's really bare bones and basically sent on your way. That's it, there's no hand holding or starting missions to ease you into the game at all. Okay, I can roll with that. I've played Dark Souls, I can do a sink or swim kind of game. But the controls...they're really counter-intuitive! I get that they are going for realism and everything...but it would be nice if I didn't need a textbook to play a video game. The controls are very hard to get used to, and the lack of a third person mode of some kind doesn't help. Combat is a nightmare, which it should be I guess and it isn't the main focus of the game. Yet, there's some questionable design choices that have been made to make the game more "realistic" while sacrificing ease of use.
It sounds like I'm really down on the game, I know but still I believe everyone who's interested should give this a whirl. Underneath the harsh exterior is a game that many people will click with and play for hours and hours on end. A friend of mine has put over 200 hours into this game and swears it's one of the best games of the generation. So my advice when decided whether to buy this would have to be try it first if you can. Ask a friend to demo it, play it at a store or rent it or something! Because if you do like it, you're going to absolutely love it. But if you struggle with the awkward controls and lack of direction like I did, you'll be left out in the cold darkness of space wondering what you just spent money on...

You will spend an inordinate amount of time using tricky controls to attempt manual landing on various stations with the necessary precision of brain surgery. This isn't fun. Even if your ship is lined up and "in the blue" somehow you're a few inches out and can't dock, (That's if you can actually find the landing pad)
I played every version of Elite back in the day, and whilst the graphics are light years ahead, the gameplay is in a word BORING. No third person view makes combat near impossible, missions are utterly impersonal and repetitive.
I didn't expect an arcade "shoot 'em up" but this game is quite literally set in a vacuum of it's own, with no people or interactions.
Why, when you run out of fuel in deep space does your ship stop dead? Air resistance, erm no. Gravity, erm, no, poorly designed game yes. Anyone with a knowledge of physics will understand that an object travelling at semi-light speed in space will take energy to stop. That really annoyed me.
So yeah, spending hours on a learning curve which is all about docking really, the rest is intuitive, is a waste of time and enormously frustrating. Any game where you can't jump in and play isn't worth it.
I bought this for my Son when he gave up in complete exasperation I had a go and can echo everything he said.
As with many genres of entertainment (think Hollywood films) this is a poor remake of a classic .
I would have thought that some effort would be made to improve the gameplay rather than just the graphics.
Overall, don't buy it, unless you are a masochist
Very poor job, Oh and f you try "open play" you will be annihilated regularly.

Unless you want to spend well over 15 hours learning how to play a game, this game is a big waste of money and time. All it really succeeds at is frustrating you with its **** controls. I really don't understand why a game with no gravity still can't fly a **** ship in a straight line. The targets also disappear as you approach them for some **** reason too.

I rated it poorly because, frankly, the controls are terrible. This is a game that needs a HOTAS.

In addition, the tutorial was noting but a series of you-tube clips. there is no walking the player (pilot) through the steps. I am a casual gamer. I play games to relax after work. Simply, this game was too much work to fly. I never did manage to even reach the content. I really

I really wanted to like this game because I am looking for a "space trader" game. However, this game needs better controls, a better tutorial, and a cue card to put in front of the screen in order to make sense of the controls.

I have played this game for 35 hours and hopefully I had some TV shows to watch while traveling for missions. After the first good impressions, you start to get the feeling.

E:D would be an extraordinary game were it not for two glaring flaws. First, there remain unresolved bugs that can potentially damage graphics cards when played in SLI. The user is not warned of these issues. Second, the content is bland and repetitive. But if you like Space Engine and you know not to turn on SLI, then you will love this game.

Good SIM with a fair few things to do, beware the grind! Combat can be tough but engineering weapons makes a big difference, if you are willing to grind for resources.

Millions of light years of space to go and play in! ...What could be better? Answer? ...An on-line version with millions of light years to go and play in! From those original wire-frame ships to today's fully detailed and almost cine-graphic detailing, to the 4 BILLION solar systems to explore, in one galaxy, this game has adventures just hard-wired into it. Subsequent expansions and patches are a feature of the experience, as new, real-world astro-physics and astrological data is added to the software, to make your journey through the cosmos as real and visceral an experience as possible.
The developers, Frontier Developments, are a relatively small operation, run by genuine enthusiasts, and due to their location, in Cambridge, UK, have access to research from the world class scientists and facilities, close at hand. They have built a MONSTER of an experience, partly due to crowd funding, and with what they have to work with, have produced a phenomenal body of work. This 'game', and I'm not sure that is the best pigeon-hole to put Elite Dangerous into, is so imersive and will appeal to the blood-thirsty space pirate, the lowly trader, the explorer, and now, with the latest expansions, the Space Cruiser/sight-seeing adventurers in us all. This is probably the ultimate survival/adventure experience (again, not happy calling this 'thing' a Game!) available, with stunning graphics and an amazing online community with whom to draw support, advice, and wing-men from. Whether you are PC or Console, this is a MUST HAVE part of your game collection! I must now get back to my ship, as those jobs all have deadlines and mine are fast approaching! See you on the dark side!

Elite: Dangerous is a space sim that allows you to trade, explore, or engage in combat as you see fit and make progress (I won't exactly say "meaningful" progress) in any or all of the three. There are about 38 ships to choose from that vary by cost, and in some cases, other unlock requirements and allow a lot of customizability. Some ships are more suited to exploration, some to trading, and others to combat, while still others are great (but not the best) at all three. Due to the variety of tasks that you can perform, the game can get quite addictive as you spend "just one more hour" to try something else.

While the game has a lot of breadth, it doesn't have a whole lot of depth. There isn't much of a story to speak of (you'll have to dig for the lore in the form of text or audio logs) and definitely no campaign mode. The game is a sandbox where the galaxy is your playground and you make of it what you will. This in itself isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, the learning curve is steep. Very little is explained in-game and you'll find yourself heading to Google or YouTube quite often in an attempt to figure things out.

You can either play in Open with other players or Solo, and herein lies the biggest drawback. Once you leave the starter areas, you'll have players in fully decked out ships that are bent on your destruction just for the fun of it. There is no Open PVE server. If you wanna play with others, be prepared to get ganked by experienced players. If you play Solo, you won't have to deal with that annoyance, but you'll be alone. The alternative is to join a Private Group where only you and other like-minded players can have fun, but then the game doesn't feel like a true MMO. If you like the idea of open PVP with ganking, the game may work for you, but these days, you'll still need a fully "engineered" ship. To put it simply, Engineering is the process of upgrading various aspects of your ship to make it a lot more powerful than it is by default. This process is a tremendous grind and not fun at all. It is tedious and will take you a long time. Die-hard fans will attempt to shoot me down for this, but that's no concern of mine. It is what it is, and as a potential new player considering purchasing this game, you deserve to know the facts.

In my opinion, an Open PVE server will solve this problem and make the game a lot more playable, perhaps even increasing the game's fanbase as more people get to cooperate and socialize with others. Until then, the game is going to remain very restricted. A lot of players did return to try out Fleet Carriers, which are the newest addition. But there's no guarantee that most of them will actually stay once the novelty wears off. So in the end, is the game worth it? It definitely has potential. But Engineering is mind-numbing and Open PvP is a substantial deterrent for many. Those are good reasons not to waste your money.

Elite Dangerous offers gamers a seemingly unlimited amount of gameplay, and this is reinforced when you settle in and see how titanic the scale and size of the game environment actually is with the amount of possibilities and opportunities that are provided.

Staying true to its genre Elite Dangerous provides a great sense of freedom in a universe where the player’s choices dictate his progression in the game. It may take some time to get accustomed to the controls and the general functions of the game but once you get the hang of it you’ll experience something unique. It is unfortunate that the experience is held back by an extremely poor tutorial and constant disconnects.

Challenging and often frustrating, Elite rewards perseverance with a sense of place and progress that few Xbox One games can rival. [Jan 2016, p.76]
