Unfortunately it doesn’t continue because you start to realise that the game is riddled with problems. The technichal issues in the game are vast and they seriously make the game become a chore because at times it became unplayable. The difficulty curve in the game also doesn’t help matters and I found myself dying on a number of occasions and I got the feeling that no matter what I did I wouldn’t improve. The main reason why I didn’t think I would improve is because the combat is so poor and is full of problems, and you never feel like you get the upper hand. The shooting mechanics in the game don’t fare much better either because the hit detection is off and I didn’t know if I was hitting the enemy or not. The game isn’t all bad though, and I was especially impressed with the world and the story in the game. The world is massive and there is plenty for you to explore and I must admit that I did enjoy exploring at times. I was also a fan of the lore in the game and I found the story to be interesting throughout. The presentation side of the game is definitely hit and miss. Visually the game can look lovely at times but unfortunately the accompanying sound design is awful at times, and that’s mainly down to the poor voice over work. At the end of the day any good points the game has are quickly forgotten about because there is simply more things wrong than right with Elex. The worst thing is that the game doesn’t get the basics right and this harms any potential the game has, and this is unfortunate because Elex could have been so much better. Fans of the RPG genre will find some enjoyment every now and then, but the issues the game has will put a lot of people off and this is what put me off. Expand

This has to be the most pointless game released this month. Mixing science fiction with fantasy? who's brilliant idea was that? This game feels like you are just playing a poor mans version of fallout, witcher and Mad Max all rolled up into one game. "Jack of all trades, master of none" is the perfect tag line for this game.

Graphics are excellent and in terms of more advanced RPG games on console or PC there is not much to compare it to. Massive amount to do, very complex story and difficult. Just be warned if you have never played a proper RPG game before this may not be a title you will like as the difficulty can be quite high. Expand

Plays like Gothic and Gothic 2 without the bugs and exploits. The game doesent hold your hand, you have to take your time and pay attention on your quests. You have to be careful where you explore because, like a real wilderness, there are birds and bears depending on the part of the forest you walk.

You can go old school sword and bow spellcaster or high tech energy weapons psychic.

This game is in a lot of ways similar to the old standards like Fallout and Elder Scrolls, in that you are in a wide-open world, are free to develop the character any way you want, and you have plenty of moral/political choices and alliances to make with most of the quests. The peculiarities stand out, however. I went in with a Skyrim/Assassins Creed/Witcher attitude and felt the need to completely restart the game after a few hours based on my newly acquired, hard-earned knowledge.
The weird thing about this game is how it forces you to play it differently than the others of the genre. Typically with games of this kind, you can expect to be directed in the beginning of the game to an area where you can handle the quests and enemies presented to you, where you can begin the gradual growth into the super-soldier world-saver you expect to become. But in Elex, the map is peppered with way-too-tough monsters among those you can actually handle if you’re careful and leverage your companion’s combat abilities to stay alive. Roads from the first town are populated by horrific monsters you have no chance of handling until much later on. So you have to do things that seem not quite to be cheating, but more “gaming” the game to get by. Like using your jetpack to parkour up a wonky awkward mountain because you have no chance agains the giant troll in the road, even though the quest you are on lies beyond this beast, and the quest is actually something you can handle. Or running from a fight you can’t handle since (as you find out through trial and error) you are a faster runner than any monster, and they do not like to deviate from their pre-determined paths and areas in order to chase you.So unlike most open word games, the enemies are quite willing to let you run off as they shake their fist at you. It’s just weird and unexpected. These aspects feel off, like a band-aid to cover up their failure to curate a reasonable game world that allows for incremental progress. You have no way of knowing if a quest is too hard or doable until you try it and die in one hit or barely pull it off. When you mark a quest on the map, it will typically mark the quest-giver in orange, and the quest target in yellow. But if it’s a multi-step quest, it won’t indicate that your business with the target is concluded and it’s time to head back to the giver to wrap it up (even though you did the thing you were supposed to do). Sometimes, the quest will all-together vanish from the list, and you are expected (unless this is a bug) to go back to the quest giver by remembering where they are and bringing up the topic in conversation in order to get the rewards for your tasks.
There are also strange specifics when it comes to stats and ability progression. There are all kinds of requirements for even accessing the right to pay money to gain an ability from a trainer. There are steep stat requirements for being able to wield weapons (you will see weapons for sale in the first town that you won’t even be able to use for dozens of levels). Upgrading a weapon increases the stat requirements, so that, if you aren’t careful and deliberate with hard saves, you could render your own equipment unusable for many levels to come. The game makes no effort to explain any of this to you.
Overall it seems like I’m complaining and have nothing to like about this apparent nightmare of a game, but the opposite is true. I find myself completely rapt by it. I’m on the edge of my seat when I venture outward because there is literally no telling what you might find around the next corder: a massive abandoned power plant, a blown-out house crawling with mutants, a giant troll in a clearing, a beautiful coastal switchback trail that leads to a shipwreck, etc. And the fact of how dangerous the world is only serves to amplify that immersion. On top of it all, once you wrestle your way through the initial barriers to entry, there is a real sense of satisfaction when you actually start figuring out how to get yourself set up with new equipment, how to be smart about stat allocation, how to survive fights and knock out quests, and how to make it around the world activating teleporters and learning new areas. Watch some beginner tips videos that really go in-depth about the best ways to play early on, they will be a huge help. Obviously, this game is for people who are really willing to “get into it.” Not to say that the other genre-definers are casual or easy, but, after playing this, they kinda are :) It’s a salty, greasy, beefy RPG-burger that will only let you play it if you really dive in and pay attention. Highly recommended, but only for like, spazzes who are into this kinda thing.

-Actual open world. The degree of mobility the jetpack allows you to have is something that anyone would appreciate. There are tons of hidden areas and secrets scattered about in some crazy places you wouldn't normally consider exploring in other RPGs. Ranged combat can be done, hovering in the air; sure, that giant rat might have pushed your **** in a little, but who'll be the one laughing when you're flying above it, raining rockets on it and its friends? The only obstacle are the enemies that you will not be able to take on, but all it takes is clever use of terrain to get around them and where you want to go.

-While your choices are limited, they actually mean something. Many of them aren't just black and white, either; there will be grey area that will make you stop and weigh the consequences. Even some of the smallest actions and mundane tasks can be the first domino falling in a chain of events caused by your choice to turn a small profit fetching something.

-Quests are actually pretty varied. There are still fetch quests and the like, but there won't be 7 different fetch quests from one place. The differing factions and their ideologies plays a big part in what you'll be doing, as well; the order in which you do quests can impact other quests pretty dramatically, too. If you aren't afraid of trying something new in subsequent playthroughs you will get a very different perspective on the world.

-There's an actual sense of progression. How you level matters. The world is a harsh place, and the main character's life spent relying on Elex for any semblance of strength is over when you first begin. You are supposed to be weak. You get stronger. You develop new skills. You forge a place for yourself and slowly but surely become more and more capable. Small victories from rotboars and hasty retreats from a single reaver will turn into assaulting strongholds, obliterating mechs, and clearing entire groups of well equipped enemies without too much trouble.

-Vastly different playstyles. It may seem really odd to have swords and bows in a world of magic, guns, and sci fi plasma weaponry and assault suits and jets, but a comet full of a resource of unlimited power is an odd occurance, indeed, isn't it? You'll start off just surviving with a rusty axe, but there are plenty of ways to go. Craft your way to victory with potions and chems, dominate through technological superiority, run around incinerating everything-- you're sure to find something you like.

-Enemy spawns. Nothing just teleports into existence from my experience. It never feels like there's some random bush producing an endless supply of bandits. A cleared area stays cleared for a long while, and you'll most likely come back to different residents anyway. There is no real area scaling; you'll run into runt tier enemies at level 50 that die faster than you ever did starting out, and you'll run into something you'll have no choice but to retreat from early on. It makes the world feel organic, rather than a case of "Oh, you got an ebony sword! Time to replace all the common bandits with super advanced variants for no reason other than you happened to find such a sword."

-The cities and towns. They are pretty much the perfect size. There are well placed NPCs mingling with generic faces; none of them feel too small, like in a Bethesda game where a major capital city only has 6 houses, and none of them are impossibly huge and full of nobody important, either. Many of them are interesting and fun to explore. There aren't a lot of them that just stand around all day, and those that do are often named and looked down upon by their respective communities. It's a shame that most of the conversations you'll overhear don't back this up too well, though.

-The world is vast and interesting, full of opportunity, but it's not so crowded either. It strikes a good balance between things to do and so much to do that none of it feels special or worthwhile.

+Varied enemies to fight, from battle droids and big mechs to giant rats and trolls.
+Three interesting Factions, each with their own lore and styles of combat (Magic, Guns, Bows, Melee) that add greatly to replayability
+Excellent implementation of verticality with the Jetpack. A fun, easy to control and to handle way to get around, escape from encounters, find hidden loot and bypass pesky guards.
+Engaging and fun lore. Lots of side lore that can be found as loot in journals and recordings adds meat and depth to the world.
+Decisions will affect the ending, which is satisfying and extensive for all major characters. The best story of any Piranha Bytes game ever.
+Character Models, movement, faces, and conversation environment vastly improved over past Piranha Bytes games.
+It's not clunky, junky, ugly, or messy at all, in my opinion. Graphics are beautiful and only slightly dated, and controls are just fine.
+Soundtrack is excellent, and voice acting is not bad at all. Sound effects are also okay.
+Largely bug-free. Any bugs I spotted were few, negligible and certainly not game-breaking.

    Cons:
-Merciless at the beginning of your first playthrough. Will require patience for the first few hours of gameplay.
-Melee combat could use a better tutorial. It's not buggy or broken. It's just not explained properly.
-A few balancing issues between combat paths. Certain faction-combat style combinations can make the game a cakewalk, at least on lower difficulties.

And yes it's not comparable with any AAA title the industry throws at you with their high end budget.
Despite the fact that the UI and Combat is very very clunky and old school i like this game for the various quest choices and rewards it gives you so u have that nostalgic feeling the Gothic series gave you. (including the various Bugs and broken game machanics lol)

I will be looking forward to play this game as a high personality craftsman thief as this is a very good way to earn Elexit
until i can afford all the stuff and upgrades to actually make me stronger. (stealing weapons and stuff outside containers doesnt even require any skill whatsover just dont get caught and you'll have some pretty nice weapons you will be looking forward to skill)
I can also strongly recommend to get a companion and upgrade the group skill as progressing through the first Edan quests as it will make your life a little easier.

I know the release version of Elex is buggy as hell (freezing bow while doing a side roll, camera, cutscenes etc.) and not everybody will like the fact that leveling up and getting stronger is actually a darn piece of work, but i think if PB is listening to the community and actually getting♥♥♥♥♥♥done to make this a little more playable (just downloaded a first update) this game will be a nice alternative to the "get exp thrown at like money in a stripclub" games out there.

    Conclusion:

YES its a non AAA title from a german developer and
YES the game is hard and doesnt really appeal to people new to the series, but if you bite your way through it without getting yourself devoured by it it's really not that bad.

10/10 would get "Gothiced" by a low level critter again

    - Bugs (What huge RPG doesnt have em?)
    - Zero customization
    - Lack of "Loot". There isn't a lot.
    - UI

For what it lacks in polish it gives back in story, nostalgia, writing, and general role-playing experience. If you can get past the old school RPG feel (or even enjoy that) then you're in for a fun surprise. It won't be GOTY, but it's a nice refresher.

Although this game might be a bit "oldschool" it creates an intense atmosphere with great dialogues and a dynamic story. I recommend this game for fans of classical RPGs.

Where to start...

I've never played any of PBs (Piranha Bytes) games, even though I think I own Risen 1 and 2. I did watch a YouTuber play Gothic 1 and now Gothic 2, so Elex is my first game by this Developer. As I've only seen some of Risen, and most of Gothic 1, the combat was bad, but that depends on who you ask. Elex is done much better. The combat feels like it's realtime turn

The combat feels like it's realtime turn based. What I mean by that is, you cant just start swinging your weapon around like you can in Skyrim, or Fallout, it's really more on the "predict your enemy" and dodge or block, then attack, which I never felt other games inforced as much as PB games do, you will die if you do not dodge, block, or out right kill the enemy before it kills you.

The AI is questionable... PB aint new to game development, they have 5-6 different games set around the same genre. How do you make the AI so bad? From the very start of the game, you get a little help from an NPC. While the two of you make it to the camp, on the way you will fight some beast, for the most part everything is fine, unless you agro the enemy and it start following you then your dead. Most of the beats to the camp are easy, I've had no issues and this is my first PB game with this type of fighting style, however, I went off the beaten track and had a raider follow me for a very long time without the NPC thats helping you even caring. The AI is not bad for the most part, well, so far its done what it needs to, but on the other hand, it worries me that later in the game it might get frustrating trying to deal with it, as I know you get followers in Elex.

If steam had a rating system, I would out right give Elex a 9/10. You really need to hate the voice acting or the animations to give this game a bad rating. The animations feel good, when your running the character looks like he has some weight to him. The combat animations wont please everyone, but thats the way it is, its not bad combat its what makes PB games unique. Calling the combat bad is like saying the Final Fantasy turn based combat is bad... They for the most part dont even have any combat animations...

I actually ran into this bird thing that owned me, I kept trying to kill it without success, BUT, after I left it, because I was totaly gonna return and own that beast, I found a bow, with arrows... And I went back... And shot that thing in the face... And it died... I got loot... I was happy... (Tears up)

As with everything else, I dont have much to complain about. The environment is amazing, the voice acting if well done, the scattered loot is everywhere, really it pays off to explore. The sound and music is good if maybe way to loud when NPCs talk, but you can turn the music down. Elex for me, so far, is way better then most of the games I've played the past few years. Yes, the game has issues with AI, which I hope PB will take very seriously and fix, again, the combat is not bad at all, not as much as people seem to complain about and hate. This review is coming from someone who has never played any of PB games before, if I can tolerate the combat, you can bet, if you give it a go, and commit even a little, it will be worth it. This is a good game, and does not deserver the hate its getting.

    Fix the AI Piranha Bytes.

The biggest disappointment that I have with Elex isn't the poor control system, or the colossally horrific voice acting, or the overpowered enemies, or the character modeling from the 1990's. No, my biggest disappointment is that all, and I mean ALL, of these issues could have been addressed and refined if given two things: more time and more money. I feel that Elex could have been one of the best open world RPG games we have seen in quite sometime had it had the time and funding to develop into something wonderful, not just passable.

A wildly ambitious fantasy fighter that's sadly lacking the fundamentals.

Sadly, for all its premise, Elex has to be one of the most uninspiring RPGs I have experienced in a long time.
