Remove delay in controls and jumping backwards in neutral on stick immediately!!! Every time you try an impossible jump and hold run you jump backwards off a cliff. The worst part is leveling up. You can't just play the game through. You'll have to spend weeks fighting the same enemies unnecessarily and repeatedly because game is so short otherwise and makes feel like boring work to the point of losing interest quickly. Absolute nonsense you unable to track any of the vague quests or side ones without googling **** Devs ought to be ashamed of themselves letting it release this way. I guarantee you will die 70% of time due to piss poor camera and lock on mechanics. They deserve a one star until fixed! Put a setting to adjust camera closeness to what user wants!!! Too far away from character whole game. Toon looks 2 inches big on my 50 inch screen while moving wtf!!! Anothe story of a game coming out unfinished so the can steal our money and in 600 updates might fix a few of the horrible mechanical issues. REFUND MY MONEY PLEASE IMMEDIATELY!!! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game ranks amongst one of the best games in the Soulsborne genre, but it STILL lacks what is takes to be a truly great game; or even a 'good' game really.

The graphics are excellent, and the combat controls are relatively responsive, as they need to be in this genre of game. However, that being said, the game falls short on MANY fronts and demonstrates a lack of developer insight into what makes an exceptional game.

While the combat controls are very responsive, the combat in the game often devolves into enemies crowding the player, with the player fighting the in-game camera as much as they are fighting the enemies. This lack of insight, amongst other things, detracts from what could otherwise be a great game.

Competitor 'souls-like' games (e.g. Nioh) so a better job of pacing the combat properly, and offering players some room to actually see what is going on.

Undoubtedly the weebs will shout their lack-of-brain-cells, lemming-like, mantra of 'git gud', but those shouts of mindless of brainless drivel should be directed at the developers, not the players in an effort to get the devs to put forth that 'git gud' effort into overcoming their own barriers, get rid of some of these mindless, idiotic, pacing and crowding issues that mar what could otherwise be a 10/10 game.

Still, all that said, it is still a very 'good' game...and would still a solid 5/10. It really is a 'average' game; but that's just it...it's ok, not 'excellent' or 'exceptional'; it still finds itself leaning on the same tired old soulsborne tropes and cliches. The sole exception to this is that it finally brings magic back into being a viable build.

5/10 would have been as high as it could possibly go with the problems that still exist; and that have existed since the days of the soulsborne infancy.

Unfortunately the Radahn & Fire Giant fights docked additional points because they stand in the way of the player as a 'mandatory' event; and those fights are quite possibly the most terrible fight design I have seen in any modern game. Look to the players, and how many "cheese" strategies players come up with for those two fights alone....that's your barometer for how badly you have designed a fight.

Many other boss fights are likewise a gimmick-driven mess, and not remotely 'fun'; which is the purpose of gaming is it not? That's not to say that ALL of the boss fights are bad; I would say a solid 30-40% of them are well-designed and good; however unfortunately for only 30-40% of 'good' content, the customer should only be charged about 30-40% of the MSRP cost of the game.

There's also some Game Design 101 flaws, for example many times you have to "reload the game world" in order for changes to take effect (e.g. you turn in a quest, and a new pathway is intended to open up; however nothing will happen until you Fast Travel somewhere, forcing the game world to reload)....I mean, seriously, c'mon From Software, that is like High School level basic game design, you guys are supposed to be pros!

All in all, it's decent, and you definitely get your money's worth from a "time-spent" perspective, the game is MASSIVE. So that's a positive. The problem is that From Software still fails to deliver a game that is 100% fun to play. It's about 40% fun, and 60% eye-rolling bad design and annoying. Definitely see some substantial improvements for player experience, but they still have a long way to go.

Definitely not the 10/10 experience that the weebs and fangirls are crying out.

I would have to say the biggest downfall is the continued "lack of respect" towards a player's playtime. My time is far too valuable to waste it doing the same things over and over again. If the dev's target audience is grade schoolers or people drawing welfare stipends, okay sure; but for honest working folk, we don't have time for repetitive garbage.

Another issue is EXCEPTIONALLY POOR quest design & quality-assurance testing. There is no 'Quest Log' to track your objectives; and if that isn't cumbersome enough, most of the quests are flat-out broken, with 'triggers' not happening reliably, NPCs not appearing where they are supposed to be, etc.

The "summons" aspect is a really cool addition, and I really enjoy that aspect of the game. However, I do not appreciate the inconsistency of when/where you are able to summon. There is no explanation to why you can summon in some areas, and why you can't in others; the inconsistency with that game mechanic is mind-boggling from a professional studio.

    Final Elden Ring verdict, 3/10.

Just not that much fun. Story is pitiful, there is no learning curve for new players (i.e. me). Just grind on nothing creatures until you can muster enough points to maybe kill a boss or two. If you are new to this series just don't.

If you activate multiplayer features in this game you also get the invasion system which is nothing but a feast for grievers and can‘t be deactivated. Which makes it impossible to play a relaxed coop session. If you don‘t care it might be a great game.

I figured with Martin penning the game's story it would be rather grand involving political intrigue and riveting tales of man's inner folly. Having grown up on D&D and CRPGs I expected to have a fair idea of what I was getting into.

Much to my surprise, I found a vast open world filled with nothing to do. I created my character to wander around some lifeless void. Oh, it looks rather grand the art direction is quite phenomenal though the textures muddied and the game is plagued with pop-ins as well. I am able to forgive the occasional jank for a good and true RPG. I however did not find one in this game. I'm not sure what constitutes for an RPG these days amongst the general public, but generally it's a game with roleplaying options of which this game seems to have none other than building your character's stats and skills.

All problems are solved through this game's languid, ponderous, and clunky combat. No non-combat or social options in this supposed RPG. The exploration as as dull and lifeless as the world in which it inhabits. Some scant crafting materials to create some mediocre items with minimal stat gains. Undoubtedly the usual carrot and the stick seen in the MMO sphere influenced this trash itemization.

The dungeons were quite interesting and a more linear experience and I killed Margit after ten or twelve tries. The game's molasses combat was made even more frustrating due to the various technical issues that plague this supposed RPG (Hint it's not an RPG it's just combat pornography) Your character's hitboxes are far too large causing the enemies to strike you frequently when you're clearly outside of their swing radius. There's also numerous frame rate drops making the game's sole feature of combat extremely difficult since the technical execution of the developers lack of talent is holding you back further than the difficulty of the game is.

All in all this game is not an RPG, there are no roleplaying options. It's just combat pornography for the youth's violent masturbatory sadist rituals. If you have any class avoid this buggy mess like the plague it is and cast it into the fire! I for one got a full refund from my local gamestore, but I hope to save others the expense. We all know this game doesn't deserve a perfect score.

Story is virtually non-existent they were happier than hell to plug George R R Martin's name all over the marketing materials, but I'm not sure what he did. About as much work as he does on his own series I'd surmise, which is NOTHING. You get what amounts to lore dumps on scrolls and flavor text on items passing as a "story." There's no major narrative structure.

The "revolutionary" open world is hollow, lifeless, and boring. I've seen more intriguing open worlds in PS3 games. Speaking of PS3 games that's basically what you're getting here in the visuals department. I guess the AAA industry is so exhausted from bribing publishers and youtubers to give them good scores they don't even bother with the graphics anymore. Art direction is however stunning, seems to be where they spent most of their time.

Gameplay is seriously bogged down by numerous bugs and technical issues. Frame rate drops, save crashing, stuttering, janky animations, clipping errors, you name it this game has it. I guess all the 10/10 reviews are based on where the game will be in 2 years once they fix the bugs? That's some optimism for you!

Speaking of story I guess other than the one eyed girl and the crappy cutscene there isn't really one. Figured since it had the Game of Thrones writer on it it may be cool, but I guess this is the reason why everyone hates the damned show now. He must not be very good, probably another SJW propped up by the hollywood elites.

Dodge mechanics are pretty clunky and don't seem to work quite right.. Seems like your character's hit box is larger than Nancy Pelosi's slush fund. Clipping seems to guarantee that the enemies kill you through walls and rocks and other crap, but you never seem to go through them. I presume it's some intentional feature to create a faux sense of challenge to the game. The alternative is that the programmers lack the technical wherewithal to pull of what they're striving for. Now that I think on that though it's probably the latter with the number of bugs this game has. Frame rate drops are pretty harsh and consistently occur on boss encounters.

Maybe it would have been a cool game if the story was any interesting or if the developers were worth a lick, but they seem to be reaching for the stars when they can't even grab the dirt off the floor very well. Play God of War any of them and hard if you wanna play a real good game. I'll be taking this back to gamestop and telling them the damned thing is broken to get my money back because it's just awful.

If, like me, you have played this series since Demon's Souls, you will realise Elden Ring is Dark Souls 4. Or Demon's Souls 2 - It doesn't really matter at this point.

Other than the *slightly* more open world structure (the 'Souls series was always somewhat open in structure) and Torrent the goathorse, everything is exactly the same as all the previous games, including elements from Bloodborne and Sekiro.

    Same player classes and animations?
Same enemy design, including enemy types/classes?
Same pseudo-mediaeval world, with lonely atmosphere?
    Same dead-eyed, hollow-voiced NPCs?
    Same controls and combat system?
Same telling of the opaque story and world lore through item descriptions?
    Same, boring, grindy progression system?
    Same die-and-die-again repetitive gameplay?
Enroaching feeling that you are wasting your life playing updates to the same game released well over a decade ago?

'Yes' to all of the above.

Mashing together your previous 4 games and adding a horse is in no way innovative or good, by any metric. This is one of the laziest 'masterpieces' I have ever seen.

It used to be fun, but its just the same bland thing over and over again.

Utterly sickening - i hope you like cake. And then more cake. After a palate cleanser of cake. All washed down with a warm glass of cake, chewed up and regurgitated into a pint glass by Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Fights in this game are either trivial or littered with poorly thought out fast attacks and combos, with dramatic AOE effects in bossrooms to cover up the horrible design choices. The gameplay has barely changed since DS3 and does not equip the player with the appropriate toolset to handle its range of enemies. Even worse, they have somehow regressed in quality, with slower rolls, less i frames, input buffering, input delay, inputs disappearing. The damage done in the last third of the game is so bizarre that I cannot even begin to comprehend the thought process. It feels like From really wanted to make an open world game, designed a huge and interconnecting map, and everything else just played second fiddle: littering the landscape with uncreative, sparse and repeated dungeons and encounters, scrapping together unused boss and enemy designs from previous games and slapping it together without thorough playtesting or thoughtful user-oriented design. In summary, after several hundred hours of From games, this is the game that has now tarnished my image of From as a company that holds their games to high standards and respects the player.)

    i cant say it better.
