This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A game that wanted to fix the problems of the second and first, but in my opinion did a bit of an over reach. Yes they had more locations and space to explore, but outside of main story missions they did not invest enough effort to make all these maps engaging or meaningful. The story was great, but in some places Corypheus was a bit lacking as the main villain. This may be the best dragon age cast to date, however they mostly shine individually and don't really feel like they meld well together like in past titles. Game play is dynamic and always a spectacle, but there's a bit of strategy missing to it when your inquisitor is the main one carrying the bulk of the fighting. Expand

An Amazing RPG with a couple of flaws.

This game is amazing, the world is great, the combat stellar, and the story is pretty good. I enjoy the inquisition leadership mechanics a lot as well. Your companion party and companion quests are also really good. My only problems are how repetitive some of the early game quests can be and how flat the villain is.

Also the dragon fights are AMAZING!

i don't like that you cant really take your savegame from the previous games and import them into Inquisition.
instead you have to prepare the world of the game on the website and it therefore feels pretty impersonal.

    Otherwise I'm a fan.

It's a solid game. To me it's the weakest in the series but that's not really a bad thing since the series imo is one of the best.

Definitely worth the money and I look forward to further games in the series!

However, it is also a phenomenally immersive RPG that provided interesting combat, a memorable (if at times, somewhat cliché) story, and some undeniably charismatic and unforgettable characters.

Inquisition is not without some minor shortcomings. Load times are rather lengthy, and the game does hit a few technical speed bumps here and there. Additionally, for reasons I cannot seem to perfectly verbalize, the beginning of the game feels quite slow. And lastly, there is a disheartening streamlining to character customization that seems like a carry-over from Dragon Age II: Unlike in Origins (but much like in DA2), each class only has two choices of weapon styles at most - mages are forced into using only staves. Simultaneously, these concerns feel more like nitpicks than entirely valid, pointed criticisms of the game's faults.

Inquisition is a game that offers incredible levels of depth in a variety of areas: The character creator is robust, and there are eventually a plethora of options in terms of customizing the appearance of your weapons and armour; the ability to allocate ability points as you so desire can lead to some specificity in terms of your combat performance (though the extent to which these numbers affect your character does not always seem all that substantial, for some reason); and the crafting system allows for a wide variety of appearance options and stat bonuses. Yet the depth of this game is not solely limited to its mechanics.

The companions in Inquisition represent a strong return to form for Dragon Age as a whole. While Dragon Age II featured memorable and lively companions, Origins' standout characters proved to be a tough act to follow. And while this still may be the case when considering the incredible impact of characters like Alistair, Morrigan, Shale, Sten and others from the first game in the franchise, standout performances and incredible writing prove that Iron Bull, Cullen, Cassandra, Blackwall, Dorian, Cole and Solas (among others) deserve to at least be comparable to the standard set by Origins' companions. Even when considering the characters I didn't like (Sera and Vivienne, in my case), it is not because they were uninteresting or lacked depth and uniqueness.

While the combat in Inquisition is not necessarily remarkable, it is certainly far beyond adequate. However, the mechanics of combat in this game are not necessarily what draw me into the game - rather, it is the scale of some of the fights within the game. Of special note are the battles with the hulking, awe-inspiring dragons found throughout Thedas - battling these reptilian juggernauts proved to be both challenging and rewarding, and might have been my favourite part of the entire game.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is a game that lives up to the precedent set by the first game in the series, and more than compensates for the gripes many had with the second. It straddles the line between an open-world adventure-RPG, a Baldur's Gate-styled CRPG and a visual novel to present players with a gritty, immersive romp through an incredibly rich fantasy world. It is mechanically sound, incredibly deep, and completely enthralling. While not perfect, it is undoubtedly an excellent video game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The mechanics on this game is great and it offers more variety than what Dragon Age 2 had to offer, progressive system is very good and I’ve sunk a lot of time into this game. The story is good and the game can be challenging at times, I love exploring the new open world genre of Dragon Age and it made me feel really great to immerse myself into a world where demons, templars, dark spawn and mages clashing together that makes me feel part of something big. The real big thing I love about this game is them going back to their old roots of choosing races and classes to what you see fit for your play style. My criticism: There a few bugs here and there where some is sort of game breaking, the spawns can be quite daunting at times Hawkes new look design takes a bit getting used as he doesn’t seem to look like the one from DA2. There aren’t any different scenario stories with certain races you choose for the start of the campaign like DA Origins and that was my favourite part because of the replayability, now I am not criticising DA Inquisition for its replayability because it is fine and the story needed to make sense of what’s going on at the start unlike DA2 no matter what class you play or character you’ll see the exact same scenarios which can become very boring to play through again. Fingers crossed for DA4 to make improvements with replayabilities. Expand

This is the game we should have got after DAO. The game throws you into a world that is being broken apart by the fade. There are demons pouring out of the rifts and you have the mark that can close them. You are given the role of leading the Inquisition and putting together a strong enough band of companions and allies to take down the main Antagonist and close the fade before it's too late. I would say that there are some of the best dialogue scenes to date in the series with the royal ball one of the more fun experiences in a game I have had. Trying to gain the trust of noble houses whilst at the same time providing respite from the chaotic nature that is the open maps of the game. Each zone has so much content to explore. Dragons to slay. Loot to find and great puzzles and dialogue for you to follow. Taking different companions will unlock extra dialogue so mixing and matching your team is suggested.
    Gameplay: 2.5/3
The best in the series. There are great combos that you can do with your team, and synergy is a must when playing. The melee combat is fun and the warrior talent trees have some of the more quirky gameplay mechanics that I would recommend a playthrough with. Spell caster classes like the knight enchanter for me is where I had the most fun. Who wouldn't wanna play a spell caster with he ability to summon a magic sword that can deal devastating amounts of damage whilst still casting frost nova's and flame bombs. The progression trees seem a little imbalanced on some classes. For instance the Necromancer just doesn't do as much damage as some of the other alternatives. Although there are some cool concepts, certain trees needed more refinement. All in all the gameplay experience was fantastic.
    Visual/Art Design: 1.5/2
On the Xbone I did experience some framerate drops and glitches on a lot of occasions however This game does present beautifully. The colour palate, the grass and water, the burning buildings, the enemy designs and the weapons look fantastic. The world you're put into and the cut scenes are all done really well.
    Sound/Music 2/2
The companion voice acting is near perfect. There are so many interesting accents, characters and dialogue in this game that it is a gameplay loop on its own. The music is epic and the orchestral team do a great job at creating the sounds of war across the battlefield. The sounds of swords and spells are also fantastic. Bioware once again killing their sound design.

My final verdict for this game is a 9/10. This game is just everything an RPG fan could want in a game. It has easily 80+ hours per playthrough including 100+ for those who want to do everything in the game. I am really looking forward to DA4 as the DLC and ending to this game was very satisfying.

Going to keep it short but if you love dragon age you should buy it. Why? Because it has awesome combat and characters with branching choices. Why does it not get a 10? Because its made by EA and they had to add loot boxes and the fact that there are less choices when leveling up your character than Origins.

Played on Xbox one x. This is a generic open world game. The 20 or so hours of the main story world be worthy of an 8 or 9 in rating. The crappy filler of "content" is worthy of a 2. Graphics were ok but last gen looking- doesn't appear they patched it for one x either. :( Disappointed

It has just enough of the great things that made BioWare among the best to keep you going. But when you stop and really think about what you're playing, you realize the problems, and you see the trends of darkness coming for your soul:

    - Fetch quests: So many, many fetch quests. 4/5 of the gameplay of DA:I can fall into this category.

    - Side quests: Do you like side quests with real character development and interesting plots? This isn't the game for you.

    - The grind: There's nothing so enjoyable as feeling like you're in the South Park episode milling monsters in a forest until blood starts coming out of your eyes.

    - Characters: There's just enough of these characters to make you care, sort of. But it's barely there, and all it does is make you mourn for how much you cared about every single person in the ME series.

    - Plot: I wrote the entire plot of this game on a metaphorical cocktail napkin after I played the first hour, about how I thought it would play out. Turns out I was right. Nobody who's played the game will be shocked by this. It's just as bland as ME:A.

This was the last gasp, then it was all over, goodbye BioWare, EA ate your soul. So I somewhat enjoyed the ride of DA:I, I guess?

After a while, the slog of the game got to me, and I'm like, "Man, I just want to replay ME, again."

In all honesty, what we got was a hot mess. Most of the time your attacks are as simple as just holding down one trigger, with the occasional button tap, making most battles stale and uninteresting. The level progression is pretty terrible too; I'm all for games encouraging playing sidequests in order to advance in the main story, but in this game only sidequests that give you power will help with that. Effectively this means that more than half the sidequests are not helpful to your story (or in most cases, even level) progression at all. And don't get me started on how you cannot have a healer in your party, and have to use limited resources to restore HP. That got dreadful after awhile. In the roleplaying side, while the choices were definitely improved, the romance option was reduced to dreadful status. If you are a straight male, you have 2 romance options in the game, and that's it (you get 2 more if you're bi/gay). On the other hand if you're a straight female, you get 4 dating options (with another 2 if you're bi/gay). With this in mind I see now why most of the praise from this game comes from women, as it is without question catering to the girl and LGBT players. As a straight male, this made this element of the game highly unenjoyable, as the romance choices I got very much felt like leftovers.

Now this game definitely has redeeming qualities, or else I would not have seen it through to the end. The areas are gorgeous and very fun to go exploring around in, making each new area you unlock exciting even if you get your butt kicked and have to leave for awhile. It's fun to customize your base of operations and go exploring doing random daily tasks, and listen to what the characters are saying. And the best part of this game, where it really shines, your Inner Circle. You have a very large party each with their own unique stories, and it's fun to do side quests with them to learn more about who they are and help them through their problems. I had much more fun helping Cole deal with his identity, Cassandra come to terms with the Chantry, and pulling pranks with Sera than I did any of the main story quests. If it wasn't for these great characters, the whole game would've been a bust.

This game was definitely an improvement over Origins, but still missed several marks that made it fall short of being great. I'm not sure how this game ever won Game of the Year. It wasn't terrible, but definitely nothing I'm going to play again.

DA:I does have its glowing moments, I thoroughly enjoyed the more linear parts of the story, parts that gave me an intense thrill and a real sense of everything I do is of importance that I'm used to with BioWare's older catalogue of games. However, those parts of the game are simply to few.

BioWare does not however, possess the ability to make a open-world game truly interesting, when the majority of the mission within its vast maps are -"I need 10 of these, go get them". Which boils down to a true case of not being able to, or have the time, to utilize its own sandbox, and the result is a collectibles galore of virtually no importance to the story or the game as a whole. The reward for completing these mundane tasks do not come close to the amount of time you invest in them.

DA: is however, a beautiful game, with great visuals and at times, stunning environments.

Now that I know better, I would have waited and picked up the game during a sale, not at 50$, and so should you, but be prepared to be disappointed if you thought that this was going to be similar to the earlier style of BioWare games.

The previous incarnation of the DA series had better loot drop systems. War table missions that take so @#$%^ long to complete in real time, what the hell came up with that concept? The only reason I can see why is to keep players having to invent/wait for the missions to complete, to get them to come back daily and having to spend more time in the game that should be necessary.

It took them years to develop this game, and it still felt rushed. They spent all their time in Story development, and not enough on game mechanics. One playthrough is all I can take, which is different from DA1 and Awakenings.

There are a ton of invisible walls and obstacles that your required to walk around(Mountains, hills you can't traverse etc) to get from A-B making the maps seem smaller(Don't expect SKYRIM levels of exploration).
The story is Dull and adds nothing new to the RPG genre. There's a big blast that creates a "Breach" between the world of Thedas and the Veil which opens up a bunch of mini portals called "Rifts" around "Thedas" and lucky for the inhabitants of this land you happened to get caught in the blast that created it and received a mark on your hand that let's you close these "Rifts". Wow! amazing story alert, amazing story alert, who wants to hear an amazing story? XD

    --Negatives

--This open world is as open as the maps on Fable 3 and feel like a repetitive cut/paste job with Super Mario 3 themes like desert, snow etc. There's not a lot to do or see It feels more like a B game that should have been left on PC.
--the graphics look like last-gen with a bit more polish. Not as good as next-gen titles that launched around the same time.
--It's hard to relate to characters that act so pompous. Gone are the interesting Under Dogs from DA:O and in are these new 1%-er protagonists who are more worried about their own petty problems then they are about the end of the world.(I'm revising this review a year after writing it and can't remember any of their names)
--You'll spend a lot of your time doing annoying one-liner fetch quests to unlock new regions to be able to progress through the very short and uninteresting main quest. I spent 20 hours doing those boring forced side quest and only got 12+hours of main quests. It's the first time an RPG forced me into hours of fetch quests. One play through is all I can do on this. This game is an MMO RPG in disguise being sold as a AAA Single Player game.
--Terrible Combat, Hold down the RT and spam XYB till you run out of stamina rinse and repeat. I liked the semi-turn based Combat of older Bioware Games, Holding down RT and Spamming X,Y,B, gets boring fast.
--More Glitches then I could shake a stick at, my game crashed a handful of times especially during certain cut-scenes and I noticed a Frame-Rate drop every time I pressed the run button. There are definitely performance issues with this game but it's still "playable."
--Repetitive Multi-Player with micro-transactions(Proof that this really is a cheap MMO in diguise).
--Character progression and overall learning curve is definitely geared towards casual gamers. They either think were too dumb or too lazy to actually level up our own characters to keep pace with the game and to play the Combat portions without some sorta autopilot(There's more hand holding here then in the last one).
--I could go on forever about the terrible combat.graphics, story, acting etc.

    -Positives

-Dragon fight's were fun. Nothing like Dragon's Dogma or anything but still fun.
    -soundtrack was okay
-War Room was a good feature but becomes repetitive and annoying fast.

--There are a few thing's that this game does get right and a few thing's that it does really well but unfortunately it's not enough when compared to everything else. The story is short but not sweet and it's locked behind hours of useless repetitive fetch quests. I don't know why they thought this was a good idea cause it's not.The combat is you holding down the RT, spamming XYB and that's it(Even Casual gamers should feel embarrassed by this level of hand holding). Although there a variety of maps in the mix but they're not filled with much and are full of invisible walls and obstacles that are there to set you up for a bit of dialogue and forgettable combat encounters. This game is not worth the full price of admission and is another let down from one of my favorite game developers ever.

The real draw of this game is Character customization, choices, and discovery. I always love creating a female character and this game doesn't disappoint in that respect unlike Fallout 4 for example. Inquisition still has the best dialogue system and the most decisions out of modern games. So the only competition in that respect is between well, previous Bioware titles and Telltale Games. However, most choices don't have a big enough impact. No matter who you choose, Templars or Mages, you'll still have to defend Haven from the forgettable villain. I understand that part is critical to the story but Bioware has given much more weight to choices in the Mass Effect series
. But Skyhold really is a big improvement over the Normandy. The world is plenty big and the highlights visually are the houses in the Emerald Graves, the Eleven temple in the end, and the sand dunes of the Western Approach(beat Elder Scrolls to the punch). Due to the leveling and weapon damage system, enemies had to have large health bars to make the former mechanics work. There is no point in getting a better weapon if the Red Templars succumb to one or two hits. This makes encounters long and less fun. Dragons take so long to kill.
Only at the end does the story get intriguing. This is mostly thanks to Morigan(who I kept thinking was the villain due to the reveal trailer) and the Elvin lore.Since that I was eager to make progress in the game, I skipped most of the cutscenes, dialogue, and books;something I usually don't do.It ended up cutting my playthrough in half(about 50 hours instead of the average 100+)
In a world where Gods and magic exist, religion stills gets thing wrong. Something I only realized towards the end. Not that they were morally wrong(the chantry is clearly the old christian church and a lot of it draws inspiration from the real world) but that it's not certain who these gods were as Mythal turns out not to be an Elvin god but Morigan's Immortal human mother. And there isn't proof of the maker or the Old Gods existence. The only interesting part of Coryriphius (spelled wrong) was when he mentions that the thrones in the heavens were empty. That mystery definitely will be explained in future games.
The end seems to point towards a Grey Warden civil war being a plot point for DAV. It really sucks that EA most likely took the real ending and released it as the Trespasser DLC only for current-gen. That will probably stop me from playing it as I played it on the 360 and will likely get a PS4.
So the near future for Bioware is Andromeda. Something that is taking far too long to make. Is it going through development hell? Almost. Bioware is trying to make a far more ambitious game than Mass Effect 3. But here's the problem. This is in terms of content, not substance. Clearly the scale of this game is whats being built upon. And in my opinion thats a bad thing. Inquisition would have been significantly better in terms of story, pacing, and level design if Bioware didn't try to compete with the sheer size of Skyrim. Either way, I'm almost certain that Andromeda will be a great game:)

The story is epic, though not without flaws. The character customisation and skill trees are intricate, though the levelling up is not as deep as the original Dragon Age. The art and environments are lush and diverse. The loot is pleasing, the mini-games not without their charm, and the crafting is addictive.

The graphics are very pretty, however, the desert areas did not feel authentic to me.
Some pieces of lore you find are quite good. Others were quite bland and trivial and did not add much to the lore. I thought Dragon age 1 had overall better richer writing in its codex pieces as I remember.

Exploration is very enjoyable, the areas feel rich and it was a joy to wander through them and explore sites, although the questing was a bit dull.

Overall would have wished for a game with tighter, more dramatic story with nice cutscenes and better characters

Simply put, it was a very underwhelming experience that wasn't nearly as good as the previous two games in the series. Inquisition (which I will refer to as DA:I) felt like an experimental, spin-off title that Bioware are using to explore an open world game in the theme of DA/Mass Effect (ME). And fun fact: The base of DA:I was an MMO Bioware were working on before they even started on DA 2!

The main character, who goes by the *catchy* title of 'Inquisitor' is literally a nobody who I just could not feel connected to. You're meant to make up their history as you go along, but this whole concept just left me feeling like I was playing as a blank piece of paper with a pretty face. Your companions are, for the most part, uninteresting with crummy companion quests and uninteresting amounts of dialogue about things they did in the past. There are exceptions, such as Iron Bull, Varric (who is a DA 2 character anyway), Cassandra and (just barely) Solus. Those four are the only ones who will actually make you smile or have any sort of feelings towards. The rest are either people who seem like they're just with you because being part of the Inquisition is a trend or they're there as hired goons. The character Cole has a very interesting identity for a character, but not much touches upon it and makes him feel like wasted potential. You also have 3 non-playable companions known as advisors who consist of a DA: Oirigns character who is now a weird, crazy lady, a character from DA 2 who is actually interesting and a new one who is just plain and boring. I would like to elaborate but I'm only given a 5000 character limit here.

The story is short. Very short. And uninteresting. And non-threatening. The villain is as generic as you can get and the main quests either have not much to do with the main threat or are over before they can get interesting. I can recall only 2 main quests that I feel were pulled off well, but the other 8 (yes, 8) were forgettable and uninspired. Most of your time, about 90% of it, will be spent doing side-quests. And if you've played The Witcher 3 (TW3), then you will be gravely disappointed in what they can offer you. TW3 shows us that you can have large worlds full of diverse, interesting and expansive side-quests that involve their own stories and aren't over in a matter of minutes. DA: I has you either closing fade rifts (basically beat 5 monsters twice and then press A), collecting shards or herbs, finding spots on the map to press A at. That's LITERALLY it. Skyrim was more fascinating than that, but that's another review for another day. If that's what you enjoy doing then you will probably love this game; but if you've been shown better, like TW3, then you will turn the game off after an hour and start a new file on TW3.

The gameplay is pretty neat. Combat is very smooth and movement feels well paced in the environments you have to explore in. Jumping around in a Bioware game felt amazing and I have no idea why it made me smile so much. There is a tactics system you can use for harder difficulties, but I never touched upon it because it was just a chore in my eyes. Casual mode with your basic attacks is a challenge enough, and is quite fun, to be honest. There's plenty of customisation to play about with, but it can get a bit much what with all the characters you can have to customise and all the different ways you can do it. It's very non-linear and allows the player to be creative, but feels unnecessary and encumbering. I doubt many people play Bioware games for the combat and I think it's high time Bioware reallised it.

Maps and environments are incredibly well made. The world, its lore and scenery are the high point of this title and can look breathtaking at times. Character costumes are wonderful, facial expressions are accurate and realistic, it's hard to fault the game on this aspect.

Overall, it was an okay experience. I will come back to it one day, but when I do I won't even touch the sidequests and will mainly focus on romances and certain companion quests. In the end it was just very sub par when compared to the other Dragon Age titles and having played The Witcher 3 I will always see that as the better alternative. If you're looking for an awesome RPG to play that is something like DA: I, then I HEAVILY recommend The Witcher 3. I you're curious about it after having tried the other two games in the series then proceed with caution and don't get your hopes up. If you're looking to get into the series, then definitely start with Origins and DA 2. If you see it on sale or want to play something new and have The Witcher 3 already, then maybe give it a shot. You might even like it. There are things to like about it.
It wasn't a bad game, but was easily my least favourite Bioware title in terms of ME and DA (otherwise Sonic Chronicles would take the spot).

The framerate is steady, and I never experienced even a minor dip in frames in my 100 hours (I played on Xbox One). It also doesn't feel like an Action game that calls itself an RPG, where there's just RPG elements, but instead actually felt like an RPG with crafting, and customization. I picked the second hardest difficulty because I wanted the achievement, and I didn't want to suffer through Nightmare. This is the part where I destroy the game (I will be making comparisons to both Dragon Age games). Combat, to be completely honest, is a joke. DA:O was a slow, but challening with its combat where you feel like you were actually an outnumbered force of regular guys against a whole army even on normal difficulty. DA2 was fast, but was unchallenging even in the slightest. DAI is the worst of both combat systems: its slow and unchallenging. Its painfully slow. I like slow combat at times, but this is just ridiculous. I felt like I was playing an extremely grindy Korean MMO instead of an ARPG where the enemy health is just unbelievably high that it can take forever just kill a single enemy. The challenge is completely gone. I only had difficulty with one part in the entire 100 hour grindfest, and that was because it was just completely unfair where you were pitted against waves of enemies, and you're only allowed to carry 8 health potions at a time (and mages can't heal anymore), so you were kinda **** In Origins, you felt like every fight might've been your last because you never knew what could've happened. A dumb teammate could've stepped in a trap, and killed themselves instantly, a mage could've casted a fireball, and killed the whole party instantly, you never knew. But you always needed to be ready to adapt to have the tactical edge. Here you just charge in, and kill everybody REALLY SLOWLY. Its incredibly bland. The story isn't great either. At the beginning of the game, you're already made out to be the savior of mankind (which just throws out dramatic structure completely), the villain just comes out, and practically says "I'm the villain" and leaves to never be seen for another half of the game (which just throws out dramatic structure completely). There's also cameos from characters from previous games, and majority of the time, it feels really **** lazy. Allistair shows up after the end of a quest to say "So you're the Inquisitor, huh?" then leaves. Hawke shows up to help you on a quest, then leaves. Morrigan shows up in the last 40th of the game, then leaves. It legitimately felt like they were only there to remind you of how cool past games were, where they would flail their arms around and ask if you remember them. The open world is probably my biggest problem with this game. The areas are massive, and like I said before, pretty. But they feel empty. They literally feel like they're crafted just to hold X number of rifts, X number of gems, and a dragon. It would've been nice just to have NPCs around the map that you can actually interact with, but a majority of the time its just bad guys, rifts, gems, and a dragon. Dragon fights are cool though, for the first time anyway. Then they quickly become copy/paste of that first time in different environments with different elements, and they, like a majority of the game, become jokes. Side-quests...oh, side-quests. Question: Do you like fetch quests? How about fetch quests that are literally there with almost no context, or interaction? Sound like fun? No? Then you won't like side-quests in this game. The cast of characters in your Inquisition aren't even as good as Origins or 2's cast of characters. Yet people praise this game as the best Dragon Age yet. I don't see it. Not even a little bit. And the sad thing is that while there are some people who share my opinion, a large majority of players praise this game for all of my personal gripes with it which means I may never see a Dragon Age similar to Origins. Bioware has shifted its typical point, press, watch combat system to a hybrid version that feels more responsive, but still retains a system that players are used to. Instead of pressing a button and watching a combo, now the trigger button is held and it feels like the player is doing more. If ever in a tight situation, combat can be quickly ended and allow the player to gain better position to drink a potion. I felt there is more control in Inquisition than any other version.

Combat: This game feels more like an Action RPG than a RPG. In terms of action rpg, the player still does not have to aim, can't block or dodge manually, or press buttons in a certain combination for things to happen. However, spells can be casted very fluidly and creating unique combos mid combo is fulfilling and fun. The spell system at first is very easy to use when there are only 3 spells to choose from. Once you have more than 3, you must push a button to bring up the second set of mappings which is a bit clunky and defeats the purpose of quick combat. A more effective way for spells would be similar to Mass Effects system of bringing up the menu as the world around you moves very slow or doesn't move at all. This would allow the player to feel more free to have multiple spells. I found the best way to play was build out 3 and use those effectively. However that is the only gripe I have. The knockback, fancy animations, and sound effects make for a very pleasing experience as an archer, mage, or tank. Just hold down the trigger and wreak havoc.

Strategy: If you level up enough, you can breeze through the game with just your might and not a whole lot of thinking. That's until you reach a few of the boss battles. I'm not sure if the bosses are programmed to have a higher level than the player, but each boss had a higher level than me. For these skirmishes or battles, strategy is required. I remember one very fulfilling experience where I died about four times to a boss and could not figure out what to do. I then started running around my environment where I found an open gate, a choke point. After I picked off a few enemies early in the battle (as an archer) I ran away from the battle and commanded my party to follow. I then positioned them just beyond the open gate. As soon as the enemies (along with the boss) arrived at the gates, I commanded the party to unleash hell. It was still a hard fought battle and I barely won, which made it feel necessary to do that. It's rare to play a game where real life tactics work. I learned this tactic from the movie 300.

Inventory: Like most Bioware games, there are tons of items to pickup. The descriptions are not overly complicated and the inventory system is simple to understand which is good for a game that has tons of inventory options. As the game goes on items acquired increase in power at a good pace. I had a good grasp on a good and bad defense level, and when I picked up or crafted an item that jumped at an irregular level, I felt I got lucky or was cheating the game. This is by design though, and it felt great to craft items that seemed to outpace the equipment my enemies had. There are color coded items that signify if they are rare, ultra rare, etc. that make you feel special for crafting or acquiring these off of difficult enemies.

    Leadership

As the inquisitor, you are called to lead. Most games put the player in the position to overtake the ruler, but then that's it. I've never played a game that allowed me to have this much influence as a leader before and it felt great. There are choices made that directly effect the world. You can choose who and what to attack, who to send on recon missions, and can build the empire however you please. Along with character progression, you also have the progression of the fortress. There are side quests that can be done that will directly effect how well your defenses are and how powerful your units will be. I don't want to spoil any choices made...so I'm going to leave it at that.

    Conclusion

A must buy. You can easily put 100 hours into this game. I put 60 myself, and that is very long for me. If it weren't for other games coming out, I'd still be playing it. I just have a poor attention span. Combining the new combat system, strong inventory/item system, and the ability to shape the world with leadership, there isn't a game like this I've ever played. The cinematics and deep dialogue can occupy anyone for hours and immerse you into the world. When you get that involved in a virtual place, and have such an ability to shape it, there is something experienced in a fake place you just can't get in the real world.

Quests are all the same thing repeated over and over again, good only for leveling up, which isn't a good thing on it's own: few skills trees, and you can't actually personalize your characters stats.
Also, you can use only 8 of the abilities you unlocks.
The combat sections aren't challenging, just long and boring.
There isn't much strategy: half the enemies in the game warp behind or push through every formation you set.
Obviously, the A button is used both for jumping and to activate things. Because it takes real developers to avoid such a basic mistake and bioware doesn't have them. This is more annoying than it seems, don't laugh!
The story is mediocre too, but you are going to notice that only if you limit yourself to the main quest, otherwise, you forget it along the way: there is so much useless stuff outside of it (collectibles, fetch quests and hunt quests that repeat themselves) that you lose the thread.
There are many bugs, but IIRC the ones that deny you questlines have been fixed.
The only good thing is graphic, but the game isn't (and couldn't) be pretty enough to be interesting.
TL;DR: avoid it, it's really bad.

However, I do not think that it is excellent either; it is, simply, OK. I must confess that I have not finished the game, but here are my impressions from about 50 hours in: I feel like a lot of my disappointment regarding Inquisition is a result of the expectations that the men and woman at BioWare have created for themselves. Compared to their best games, such as Mass Effect 2 or Baldur's Gate 2, the narrative, characters and game play of Inquisition fall flat (in my opinion, of course).

The narrative consists of a slew of tired fantasy tropes: your character comes out of nowhere because he/she has been granted power from forces beyond his/her control. The antagonist is an ancient evil hell-bent on conquering all the land (to what end, I ask?!?). You must unite various factions against said evil in order to save the generic fantasy realm. Even the actual story arc is all too familiar (I will avoid going into it in detail to avoid spoilers). However, all that being said, it is extremely difficult to come up with a truly original narrative and BioWare still does a good job of providing the player with choice. Indeed, during my time in Inquisition I was forced to make difficult choices that impacted the world and characters around me. It is just unfortunate that the story can't seem to offer anything remotely original.

The characters in Inquisition are hit and miss for me. While conversations with The Iron Bull, Dorian, and Varric were entertaining, my encounters with Blackwall, Cassandra, and Lilliana left me either bored or cringing. Many of the other inhabitants of Inquisition's world simply did not leave much of an impression on me. Again, the characters in Inquisition aren't that bad, but they're disappointing relative to BioWare's other efforts. However, this may simply be my personal taste.

The game play of Inquisition, like the characters, is a mixed bag. Combat is fun: I have enjoyed my time slipping in and out of shadows as my assassin and leaping into the air, descending upon my opponents with two deadly daggers. However, I found that the combat system became a bit repetitive after awhile and that the tactical camera was difficult to use and, for the most part, useless anyway. However, it may be of more use on the PC version of the game. I found many of the side quests rather annoying; they felt like they belonged in an MMO. However, despite the "open-world" claims made by BioWare, the game does not have the scope of an MMO (or something like Skyrim for that matter) to go with the fetch and kill quests. Part of what makes an MMO fun, for me, is the promise of a new area and the sheer vastness of the world. This, along with the constant level indicator and experience bar, makes the repetitive side quests worthwhile. While Inquisition's areas are certainly not small, the world lacks the size and open-ended exploration encouraged by an MMO while retaining the MMO style of side quests; the end result is an odd mix-match of single player RPG and MMO that, frankly, did not engage me as well as either. Furthermore, I did not enjoy the war table missions. It is definitely an interesting idea, but I did not like that I had to wait for a few hours for a mission to be complete. After awhile, assigning my advisors to various tasks felt like a chore. It kind of reminded me of the mineral scanning in Mass Effect 2, though admittedly not as tedious.

It is also worth pointing out that the world looks great. Inquisition is definitely a next-gen game. Yet I found the character models and textures to be, once again, a mixed bag. Some of the animations seemed a bit clunky, while the lip syncing and facial animations often did not look natural. At a distance they looked great though.

While this review of Inquisition may seem overly critical, I have, overall, enjoyed my return to Thedas. Despite its flaws, Dragon Age: Inquisition provides an enjoyable, albeit unoriginal, experience and gives the player choice, along with customization options not present in its predecessor, Dragon Age 2 (thank you for letting me be an elf again, BioWare!). Yet I cannot help but feel disappointed by the game's shortcomings, especially when compared to BioWare's best efforts.

PLEASE NOTE: I have not tried the game's multiplayer. This is a review of the single player mode only!

Most of the game is simply repetitive collecting, yet I continued to almost the last Rift. I think this is because I was looking for something in the game that it promised, but never materialized. The customization of weapons and armors is surprisingly limited considering it has a crafting system which seems to offer infinite possibilities ( you basically get a choice of four/five options and control over colour to some degree). Unique weapons aren't unique in many cases. Runes are not remotely necessary because the game is easy enough without them. Combat is either hold one button or micro-managing - either way its pretty monochrome regardless of the enemy - even the end boss who offers the exact same challenge as two or three other breeds of enemy. The command you have over the world is piecemeal, the choices you make a fake. For example, inquisition members are prescribed; either you have them or you don't - your not choosing between things that make a real difference to your experience or strategic options you simply choose if a character is present or not. It's not an exchange, there are no real consequences - its a hollow choice. This extends to all the 'major' decisions you make. My second (half) play through with opposite approaches proved this.

The story is really short but solid enough. If you pay close attention to the lore its actually quite dramatic. But, the auxiliary missions that would make this a decent RPG are driven by really trivial, even absent story's. Thus, they add almost nothing and the game itself becomes very small despite its very pretty and sizable world.

Ultimately I think I just felt as though i was searching for something new, anticipating something significant, or waiting for a decision to come back and haunt or help me - none of this ever happened. Its an elaborate arcade game posing as a deep RPG.

This game is pretty great. It's a nitty gritty RPG for true RPGers. If you're not a fan of the RPG style game, don't even bother. It's massive, it's epic, and it will consume all your free time if you let it. Very fun, Very engaging, gets a little repetitive (as do all rpgs... i mean there's only so many different types of quests you can do: kill this, retrieve that, go here, find that etc...)

For those who had loved Origins, and as i had, been deeply disappointed by DA2 to the point of dropping the title, Inquisition for me was something i was iffy about at first, but after playing it, Inquisition is truly one of Biowares masterpieces.

    Story:
The primary reason i'd assume you'd have bought the game- and to some it may have been slow or others have said boring, but it goes to who you are as a gamer. DAI excels into creating a immersive and well articulated and detailed world. It highlights and contrasts the cultures of the people across the world know as Thedas. The main story isnt perfect though, as the idea they adversized was closing the hole in the sky that was spewing demons. Despite that, it fell short in owning up to that, where you simply complete a portion of the story and anticlimactically finish it. Despite that, the aftermath and the second arc are fantastic into bringing you into the ranks of the army you command and getting to know your comrades and your army. The story features both dark and humorous undertones, which is icing on top of the strong foundation.
    8/10

    Sound:
The sound of the game also flies beyond what you'd expect- the french accented orleisians to the more flat dialect of the fereldans. Every map has its unique ambiance, from frozen tundras to barren deserts. Voice acting is lively and each perfectly fits each character.
    9/10

    Graphics/world:
Of the most obvious things in the game is the emphasis upon the aesthetics, the painstaking detail put into designing the world you see- going from every extreme of winter tundras, grasslands, emerald green forests, putrid battle fields, and ornate cities. The level of work put into it is incredible and in itself a piece of artwork. It in no way is meant to compensate for lacking parts of the game as others titles have done, and instead, like sound, helps to immerse you into the world created. Despite that, there are a few flaws, such as the enemies contorting in weird ways upon death, or the Skyhaven objects flickering when entering the room. Not flawless, but still the cutting edge in the game industry.
    9/10

    Mechanics:
The games gear box basically- everything the game does, it does it without flaws and with a streamlined finesse. There is no problem with the control or system. It allows you design a pallet of abilities that you can put into that characters strategy. It has no issues, but it does lack some of the deeper elements that where well regarded in Origins such as the tactics and situational planning you could program into your characters, which inquisitions doesnt have. I had found that strategy was in a sense, numbed in terms of playability due to the lack of specific situational programming i had mentioned. So without any flaws but not excelling over what the series had done in the past it warrants an 8.

    8/10

    Overall:

    9/10

Definitely something to buy if you have the time in invest into a quality playthrough. Everything about the game welcomes you to become a part of it and you will know that for the price, you got well above the bang for your buck.

I bought it, played it for an hour, sold it back. The combat system is awful, like overly complicated and not fun. and the cut scenes are unrealistic. Characters look like mannequins talking. Controlling a party of random characters instead of just the character you created feels... impersonal.
Don't buy this if you think it will be like a next gen Skyrim. It isn't.

DAI - 8.5 / 10. I have played about 20-25 hours of the game so far - and even though it's not perfect - it is good enough that once I sit down to play it in the evening I don't stop until I absolutely HAVE to go to bed. So at the very least, it's addicting. The story is entertaining enough so far - it's not the most riveting story (so far) but it's certainly not awful like Destiny - alsoDAI - 8.5 / 10. The combat can either be played in RPG style where you have an overview of the battlefield and can order your party members around or you can just rush in and attack - I have typically chosen the latter just to keep things moving. I am playing on normal skill level and it's usually pretty easy. However, every once in awhile you end up in a battle where you realize some tactics are necessary and have to go in a little more strategic. Graphics are fine, sound / music is good, characters are pretty fun so far (I'm haven't gotten to much personalized character interactions yet - but the same has a focus on that), controls are easy to adapt to, generally I like most aspects of the game - and with the enormous world the game offers I expect a lot more to come. Yes there are some repetitive trivial missions and filler, but they haven't bothered me too much.
I haven't gotten far enough into the game to make a definitive critique - but certainly based on what I've done so far it's worth playing, legitimately fun/addicting, and with the currently minimal selection of XB1 games available it wasn't a hard choice to make. Don't pay attention to anyone who gave this game a ZERO - that's just ridiculous. It's not a ten, but I like it.

Other than the ME series and RDR there no other games that are materially better. Truth be told, in many respects this game is better than them from a scope standpoint, but full immersion, for me, was impossible because of the not so subtle gay politics that Bioware champions. It literally permeates the game and makes the social aspect a joke (more than 1/2 the characters are gay and none of the women, romanceable or otherwise, are attractive), Look we get it, some people really high up at Bioware are gay....so what? Don't push your politics on the other 99%. Your ME series walked the line between your message and the rest of the world rather well.

Now, as to the game....WOW.....the world is huge...larger than Skyrim and much more diverse from environment to enemies; although the towns are far less dynamic than Skyrim. Overall I spent about 50% more time in DA:I (150 hours) than in Skyrim....and all within 1 story, whereas in Skyrim, that was 5 or 6 different stories. This should be the model for open=world going forward....or at least a step in the right direction.

GOTY hands-down. I still have FC4 up next, but this was the best game I have played in over 2 years. Bioware, if you get some of your internal issues dealt with, you might actually contend with Bethesda as the best in the business.

While Origins was a good filler whilst waiting for the latest Elder Scrolls to hit the shelves DA2 and Inquisition have marked a steady decline of the Dragon age series. The game is incomplete as far as a AAA experience is concerned and should be priced accordingly... mind you not as bad as the Fable decline. The "hack 'n' slash" combat of Dragon Age II has been refined to put more emphasis on using your skills which I like. I still prefer the combat system of Origins were you needed to load attacks into a queue (the same as kotor) which put a great emphasis on chaining your skills together in the correct order, and when you did the results were often very satisfying. Some people consider Origins combat too slow and tedious which is fine, people are entitled to their opinions and honestly they're correct in saying it's slow and tedious, still prefer it though. Inquisitions combat system is a worthwhile compromise between Origins and DA2.

The story is the most epic in scope in the Dragon Age series so far. You're leading a fight against almost everything in the DA universe. Your enemies include mages, templars, demons, darkspawn, assassins, the carta, dragons, a rebel army, the undead, various monsters, a would-be archdemon, a would-be god, poltical figures, and even grey wardens.
The story and writing are great, living up to the expectations set by Origins for the most part. The side quests aren't as memorable as the ones in Origins but the main quest and companion quests are on par.
The amount of side quests in this game is daunting, coupling that with the fact that the quests are not very memorable can make trying to 100% this game a chore but they do move you around the various locales promoting discovery and collecting lore.

Graphically this game is nothing special. Slightly above average in my opinion.

Bugs are present on the xbox one version. Frequent audio delays which occur mostly within the first few seconds of loading into an area, frequent texture pop-in, freezing happens occasionally but lasts only a second or two, bugged dialogues which require you to reload to get the dialogues working properly but this only happened to me once.

    A few critiques I have:
Some of the war table operations take too long. Sometimes I would wait to advance the story so that I could clear out every war table operation on the off chance that the operations have some contextual effect on the main story missions. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has done this and it needlessly inflates playtime. Also it sucks when after completing a long operation you're rewarded with junk.

When I have a party with a warrior, rouge, and mage, and I go up to an item requiring action from a mage (like activating a veil fire torch) while I'm playing as a warrior it would be nice if the a.i. mage in my party executed that action instead of me having to switch to them to do it. A minor gripe but having to switch characters to perform class specific environment actions needlessly increases game time without adding anything.

The shared health potion thing sucks. You can only carry a limited amount and because of this the result is frequent backtracking to inquisition camps to resupply your health potions. I understand it makes hard fights harder by having to manage your potion consumption correctly but the ultimate result is having to go back to a camp to resupply afterwards. Again needlessly increasing game time without adding anything.

    Great game overall.

I think some people are ready from start to give a negative feedback about a great RPG game which everyone talks about. Which is a kind of attention addiction of being a hater. On Xbox One controls are very easy and smooth. You can easily focus on combat/tactics/environment instead of interface. Although there are some bugs right now on XBOX multiplayer, the developer team seems to be informed about the issues and working hard to update the game on all platforms, which I respect very much.

In addition, I didn't see much games which you can update/review/modify all your progress and create a new storyline/ world state which DragonAgeKeep.com website is offering in beta currently. This feature is surely innovative and gives old DragonAge fans opportunity to create a customized world state and enjoy game as they like and want it to be.

One last word about unclear maps etc. This is not a SciFi game which you can have extremely detailed maps that are obtained using Satellite photos. Have you ever see a coastal map drawn by Piri Reis which are believed to be the most detailed maps of the old times... I think map detail is more than enough. On a real RPG game (I'm talking about FRP games which were played using dices and character sheets and without using a computer),on a real RPG you can not even put a landmark on the map and walk that way without getting lost. (Which is the fun part :) ) For me, more realism means more challenge and more challenge means more fun!

(Just for info, I played DAo but not DA2. I think Inquisition is better than DAo which I believe DAo was more looking like Oblivion to me)

Despite what a lot of folks are saying and despite the storyline being a bit disjunct and choppy, the game is simply outstanding. Character mods, weapon and material development, RPG style and active combat fight mixtures, team management and skill usage, exploration, conversational user input, influentially based team advancement, the multiplayer levels......the list goes on and on. With so little competing titles on XBO it's no wonder this stands out.
The graphics are probably 'ordinary', but good for DA games.
The story is really good, characters excellent.
The world is big and fairly rich in content and diversity.
I wonder how it will look when there's titles of the same genre and production value on XBO?
You don't need to be a DA fan or have played the others.

While I enjoyed almost everything about the game, it is the story that, to me, made this game shine. I really think they outdid themselves with worldbuilding. I'd played DA: Origins, the first of the series, and "The Keep" website went a long way to restoring my memories, both of the choices I'd made and the place I was returning to. There are stories wherever you look - even a loot item can carry a tale as interesting as the mission you find it on. You could rush through the game, or you can pause and appreciate the varied codex entries you accumulate just by walking around. What results is a world that is as fully fleshed as you wish to explore.

I would usually give any good game a 9/10, because I feel there's always room for improvement, I loved it enough to spread a thick layer of nutella over any grievance I had during gameplay. I don't intend to replay it right away because it is just. so. huge. - but I realized I would have been game for another 100 hours of continued inquisiting after the credits rolled. Great job, devs.
