Sometimes the timeline can be a little confusing from time to time and besides that is a perfect continuation from Doom 2016. The enemies, really well sculpted. The demons have all of their ruthless characteristics that they have in most Doom games. The bosses are not as interesting as Doom 2016, but that's just my opinion. The most interesting bosses were the Khan Makr and the Doom Hunters were the most indulging bosses by FAR. The enviroment's were gritty and at times were very sharp and almost glistening at times. Thus this game is one of the best games I have ever played and id Software should feel very accomplished with this game. If you have never EVER played a first person shooter then start Doom Eternal. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Take Doom 2016, give it a Supercharge and Quad Damage, and you have Eternal. Twice the action and twice the vein-popping difficulty of its direct predecessor. Mick Gordon knocks it out of the park a second time with the soundtrack, gunplay is *chef's kiss*, and plenty of new ways to turn anyone who dare stand before The Doomslayer into a bloody mess, now that they've added directional Glory killing just to name a few things this game does correctly. My one issue about this game is the ending cutscene; It just doesn't feel satisfying. You just get a voiceover of one of the characters, King Novik, telling you that "his fight is eternal" as Doom-guy walks off before you get smacked with a title card. 20+ hours and a handful of gray hair for that? The game is nothing like the DOOM 2016 game. DOOM Eternal is terrible. Poor coloring, poor HUD, terrible upgrade system, controls seem laggy throughout the entire playthrough. And platforming.. ¡REALLY!? This entire game was a waste of design and money.

I loved the last Doom however I found this sequel frustrating. I only really have one gripe but it kinda ruined it for me. I never had enough ammo... ever. It seemed like most of the time I was running around looking for ammo rather than actually having fun with the game. It seems like such a small gripe, but it really impacted on my enjoyment of the game.

This is the distilled essence of the FPS genre made into a game. It's everything i could ever hope it to be (let alone actually expect), and more. I don't usually agree with perfect scores, but i think if any game on this generation deserves it, it's this one.

It improves on its already very good predecessor in pretty much every way. It's action packed from start to finish, with the only breaks being the also pretty good platforming sections. In fact, this is the first time in my life I've seen platforming in first person games actually work. It's nothing too complex, and that's exactly why it works. There are zero issues with missed jumps due to deceiving physics or difficulty in judging distance, it was all very well thought out.

Combat is perfection. The weapon sandbox is expansive, giving you many, many ways to deal with all the different threats the game tosses your way. Monsters have weaknesses that are made in a way to nudge you towards using all kinds of different weapons, but you're in no way forced to exploit them. You can just as well force your way through anything by just sticking to your favorite guns. That's excellent design. It doesn't punish those who don't play the way they intended, just rewards those who do. Personally, i love quick switching between the super shotgun and the balista. That combo melts just about anything that dares to step on your way, gives you super mobility AND keeps you charged up on armor. You basically become a god.

The only really bad thing about this whole game is the purple goo. I hope that doesn't make a come back for the next game. Or at least let me boost and jump out of it. Because of that, my actual score for this game is 9.8

There are some other minor complaints, such as balance issues, for instance i think the ray mod for the plasma gun is too weak and uses too much ammo to be of ANY use, but that's basically a nitpick and for most part most weapons and mods are viable.

The game is challenging without being punishing (at least on normal and hard difficulties), and is a hell of a power trip when you get the hang of it. So much that i haven't wanted to switch difficulties even though i breeze through anything on the on i picked to play. I'd rather keep feeling like i'm this unstoppable force. But I'll eventually get through the game at least on nightmare difficulty, like i did doom 2016.

I've already finished it on pc and xbox and i can't stop playing. I lost count of how many times I've gone through the arc complex master level. More of those already, please! This is the best part of the game since i don't have to worry about missing secret pickups or anything. It's just relaxing ripping and tearing all the way.

Anyway, if you like gameplay-focused fps games, this is a must-have. It's... well it's certainly up there with the best, which to me were the classics (doom, doom2 and hexen). It might, dare i say, even surpass them. Not sure, nostalgia is a **** it won't allow me to just flat out state that. But it's a possibility.

In short, this is the Ninja Gaiden Black of FPS games. It's the same kind of skill-based, challenging yet rewarding and addicting experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Initially I would've given this game a solid 8/10 on my first play-through for a variety of reasons that I blame myself for. From focusing too heavily on trying to get all the collectibles, to playing on a difficulty that became too easy as I progressed through, to even potentially hyping the game up too much in my head, to say I was slightly disappointed would be appropriate. However, after playing through the campaign again on a higher difficulty (ultra-violence), I can certainly say that the game has aged tremendously within the space of 3 months. The storyline is tremendous, with the Doom Slayer on his quest to save Earth from a full scale global wipe-out orchestrated by the Khan Mayker and her 3 Hell Priests! The level designs are brilliant, the enemies are fantastically unique and all pose a different threat, the weapons are so so awesome and the glory kills are once again f*cking BRILLIANT! For anyone that may have been somewhat disappointed after an initial play-through, I strongly recommend giving the game another go with a clearer mindset to enjoy the game properly. Personally, the addition of verticality and platforming in the game adds a whole new level of being smart and tactical about your next attack whilst being a new obstacle when progressing throughout the levels. So far I would pretty confidently name DOOM Eternal my 'Game of the Year' for 2020, with a final rating of 10/10. The future of the DOOM franchise is certainly one that will go down in history as a game changer, just like its 90's predecessor! Expand

You can tell a lot of passion went into this and was created with gamers in mind rather than shareholders. The one negative I have about the game is a huge one & is so frustrating that I probably won't reinstall & had to forced myself to keep playing through 1/2 the game. On the bright side Best Buy was sold out of the Deluxe edition so I only threw away $60, not $90, & no season pass.. I saw gameplay before buying with Doom Guy falling, dashing in mid jump, to double jump on a dime then dash to climb up disappearing floating rock maze before the pieces sink into lava & remember how gravity works as soon as you touch them just like Lara frikin Croft. It made exploration look more frustrating than it's worth & iD said the games environment encourages exploration so i figured the NES Ninja Gaiden sequences probably arent required to progress the story. The few clips of rage inducing, platforming I saw prior to purchase seemed like filler activities for achievement hunters & completionists, Every hint of immersion was abruptly met with another abyss to traverse & then I realized finding extra lives was pointless when they're used up by taking more fall damage than from bosses in combat. Imagine Mario in the Brotherhood of Steel....Mario 64 with power armor from Fallout and the Witcher 2 map thats how it feels to navigate this thing. I only rated as high as I did because it is good at what it sets out to do.... So I hate platforming but that doesnt make it trash because its no longer the formula that I loved. However, I hope this review saves at least one person $60 just to learn that Mirrors Edge wouldnt have been any better if it had a bad ass soundtrack & glory kills.

Oh, and the multiplayer! I I cant suggest buying just for multiplayer mode, but it is the highlight of the game for me. Its original, and creative...not just more team deathmatch, capture flag generic modes. Level up demons, unlock skins & in game customizations without loot boxes....just by playing the game, That's crazy......next they'll me that you can still play Doom Eternal without signing into. bethesda.net account.

    Cons:

    - Way too much jumping & climbing, it slows the game far too much. Some of these sequences border on the ridiculous.
    - Bullet sponge enemies, The Marauder is a pain and feels completely overpowered compared to most other enemies.
    - Set-pieces, the game feels less like a DOOM game and more like Fallout. Action sequences are spread out way too much.
    - The plot, an attempt at a back story was made but it's not particularly interesting.
    - Length, About a dozen missions, length of these varies. A fast travel system and level select allow you to replay to get all the collectibles, no replayability other than higher difficulty settings.
    - Value for money, at £60 for the basic version this could have been half of that and still not got your money's worth.
    - You MUST have a Bethesda account to play.

    Pros:

+ Action sequences, when they do come around they're fast and frantic and force you to think about the best strategy for the situation.
+ Upgrades, there's a tonne of upgrades for weapons, the suit, and skills. They use different methods/items to do so.
+ Cheats, you can replay previously completed levels with cheats active, can help with quickly replaying levels to find missed collectibles/secrets. It's a novelty though, you will get bored with this too.
+ Soundtrack is incredible, the best part of the whole experience.

    Summary:

Not as bad as I had originally reviewed it but there's no getting over this is a major disappointment compared with its predecessor, fleeting moments of high octane-action don't make up for the time wasted climbing up walls or making insane jumps across chasms. One jump in particular almost broke the game for me.

Replaying previous levels with cheats active is fun but hollow and the novelty quickly wears off. The best way to describe this whole experience is DOOM-Lite, the developers tried to change what this is at its core and it didn't work and what we're left with is a shadow of what a DOOM game should be.

Hollow, shallow, dull but with fleeting moments of intense action, at an eye-watering £60 this one release you should wait for in the sales. Avoid till then.

This is my first DOOM game so I have nothing to compare this to. I thought it was amazing, and I beat it in a couple days. If you are having any issues with progression just read the notes, it’s super fun with the limitations they provide and having to conserve your resources. It appears they innovated with this game, and I think it was a huge win.

But other than the glitches (which were mainly texture or hit box glitches) it was absolutely amazing. It gets a 9 out of 10 for because of the glitches and also Animal Crossing is perfect and Eternal just can’t be as good as it. Expand

DOOM: Eternal is, in my opinion, the greatest FPS ever made. It perfected the push-forward styled combat from 2016 and has pushed the DOOM franchise incredibly far. The combat loop is very satisfying, getting you to constantly scan your environment for ways to continue fighting (fodder demons to chainsaw/flame belch, monkey bars to dodge foes, important demons to focus on and fodder location, etc.) and is very rewarding. The game isn't afraid to kick your ass, which is appreciated from 2016 which was pretty easy, even in the late game. While the restricted ammo may come across as an annoyance, it helps reinforce the combat loop and gets your brain to constantly scan the environment for ammo pickups/fodder and to monitor your ammo levels. There's a reason the chainsaw now recharges, to get you into that combat loop. 2016 let you go through everything with the Super Shotgun, becoming rather boring later in the game. DOOM: Eternal gives you incentive to use each weapon. Some enemies have weakpoints, areas where if damaged reduce their damage or even mobility. Some weapons/mods do more/less damage to weakpoints, incentivizing you to switch your weapons frequently and again, scan the arena. It's not a mindless shooter where you're constantly killing everything (kinda like 2016 ngl), you have to think about importance of targets, ammo capacity, weakpoints, weapons on hand, mods, and so much more. It's incredible how much fun it is to fly around an arena switching weapons like mad as you cut down the legions of Hell. The story in DOOM games as never been important, but the story in DOOM: Eternal is pretty interesting (at least to me :P). It's handled much better than in 2016, since you can skip any cutscene. 2016 had 2 parts where Hayden just spieled at you for a couple minutes in a tiny room. Now, most of the story is told in skipable cutscenes and Codex entries. Speaking about Codex entries, the secrets in this game are much cooler. While you can't play retro levels as the Slayer, you can play DOOM and DOOM II in the Fortress of Doom. To access the original DOOM, you need to collect every cheat code hidden throughout the levels and in the Fortress. There's also the toys, being models of demons instead of Praetor suit variants. A bit off topic, but the environments are absolutely gorgeous with some of the best level design in DOOM history. Everywhere you look you'll see something interesting, whether it's a dead demon or a grand view the game is beautiful. If you enjoyed DOOM 2016 you will definitely get a kick out of this game. Even if you've never played a DOOM game before, now is a great time to start.

My ONLY negative is that Battlemode is lackluster. Still interesting but definitely needs some more work.

So all in all, this game is amazing, down to the combat loop, environment, exploration, rewards, story, and more. Rip and tear, until it is DONE!

Things that made 2016 Doom a masterpiece, have vanished. I get that lots of players like this game, and that's fine, everyone has their opinion, but as a huge 2016 fan, this sequel has left me heartbroken.

    1. Simplicity has gone. FPS games were pretty stale in 2016, Doom showed that a back-to-basics approach, with AAA graphics and artist-driven soundtrack and simple controls, could be a welcome refuge from all the "innovation" we see from other games. It was a pure experience. Eternal convolutes things and so ruined its USP.

    2. Not as dark as its predecessors. Although Doom 2016 was satirical and subtle in its storytelling, the environments were extra-gory and the soundtrack evocative, but Eternal fails to hit those notes. The environments are smaller, and that detracts from the maze-like intricacy of its predecessor. In Doom 2016, the environments convinced you that everything was quite normal a half-an-hour ago, only for Hell to have arrived and smear blood everywhere.

    3. Combat is fundamentally different, and not for the better. Doom 2016 is the superior game because the player is given freedom in combat and movement. While platforming is more noticeable in Eternal, it isn't why we want to play. Its a "shooter" not a runner and a climber. While these elements are not inherently bad, they are not there to enhance the player, but rather to help the player escape. Doom 2016 was no reloading and no cover. Eternal effectively has both. Chainsaw mechanic is reloading, effectively, and the platforming is "cover". This is a fundamental change, and defys any game with a Doom label on it, by definition.

    4. The interruptions!!! Towards the end of a battle, the game opens a door somewhere, and switches from the FPS perspective to the door opening. Utterly pointless. The levels are linear anyway, there's often only one way in and one way out, so why tell us that the door has opened. For that matter, why tell us that we should explore for secrets when every secret is clearly marked on the map? The mystery is gone, the exploration non-existent, and the levels...compared to 2016...are poor.

    5. The Lore. The lore was a wonderful way to flesh out the Doom Universe, I think it's a great idea, but in Eternal the execution is poor. The font is wrong, the layout messy, the colours are all garish. It ruins the "dark" vibe from the previous game, and seems geared towards people who are into psychedelics rather than some well-executed hellscape. Rainbow coloured ammo? Just stupid.

The game suffers immensely because its predecessor was and remains singularly exceptional. It's not easy to top a game like that, and in truth, it rarely happens, but one thought it could with Doom because the formula was so simple and so good, and because the devs, like Hugo Martin, gave in-depth interviews about what they thought a Doom game should be. What happened?!

The low rating is an emotional reaction, I'm heartbroken that one of the best games in a decade or so has been trashed the way it has. Is it better than a CoD game? Of course! But it's not better than Doom 2016.

Good:
Fast combat like Q3 or UT the dash skill is yout best friend.

Runes and perks is better then the ones from Doom 2016

    Love the level design.

Love the cosmetic stuff for the Doomguy and his weapons.

    Last boss fight is epic.

Some of the weapons are better like the old Plasma Rifle and the Minigun, BFG 9000 is awesome to use, the unmaker is a beast to use, the Ballista is good againt the retarded maruder and last the super shotgun gives ok dmg and the meat hook is awesome. bot i should be more op like the one from Doom 2016.

Cheat codes is a warm welcome.

    Mixted:
The jumping and grabling feals off some time and can get pretty anoing.

The doomguy gets stuck pretty easy, glitch stuck when jumping on to some surface.

Enemy on easy diffeculty deal way to much dmg special the maruder.

Armor in this game feals like wering plastic, short livespan not like in Doom 2016

Extra life is just stupid not much to say there.

The sentinel armor ui is anoing to look ad the screen, it should be a little icon insted of turning the screen a bit green.

Equipment Launcher grenades is not that greate the grenades from the shotgun is way better, i mostly use the freze bombs its more useful. And the Flame Breach i forget it all the time.

    Bad:
The Maruder is the most anoing enemy in this game, this dude should just be a boss or be tone a hell of a lot down in speed and dmg and make ham take dmg from BFG and the The Crucible, the best weapons agains him is the Ballista and Super shotgun.

Dread Knight is just a anoing version of the Hell Knight with stupid op aoe dmg, to bad this mob was maket i would be more fun to see more normal Hell Knight then lame Dread Knights.

Less ammo was the most retarded idea ever its a Doom game not a tactical shooter, hope in the new dlc they add ammo backpack as and upgradeble.

Some enemy is way to much bullet sponge, like the stupid Maruder who feals like he would belong to a Dark Souls game insted of Doom.

Battlemode is lame they should have chosen coop insted.

Overall its a Good game with some flaws, to bad that some elements of the game reminds some part of Dark Souls with a mixt of a tactical shooter. Well the tactical shooter i can live with bot op enemy Dark Soul type should be drain down the toilet.

Then there’s the changes in combat. Way too much focus on the weak point system. Again, maybe my fault, but I’m not that good of a shot. Chainsaw for ammo, flame thrower for armor. I had to laugh when I got to the first rune, encouraging players to figure out their play style when the game clearly wants you to play one specific way. Who ever though that the platforming in this game was a good idea for DOOM needs to be fired. It absolutely kills the immersion and pace of the game. I'm the DOOM Slayer, not George of the f***ing Jungle.

Like DOOM 2016 you move through the levels and hit demon hot spots where you are locked in combat for some time until everything is dead. The combat is uber fast paced, almost too much so for controllers (use mouse and keyboard if you can). My problem with the game though is the low ammo count offered you start out with. I am constantly having to chainsaw small enemies to get ammo, so I'm never able to actually chainsaw the bigger demons.

Also the low amount of health and armor items available force you to constantly time shots to cause enemies to stagger for glory kills. I absolutely HATE when games do this, force you to play their way (the developer's way), not your way. I want to run around slaughtering and wrecking demons like every DOOM game to date was played, not be thinking about avoiding hurting them too much that they die without allowing me to get the glory kill to keep my health and armor up.

I blew through DOOM 2016 in a couple days. Couldn't stop playing it but this game is such a disappointment I'm only playing for maybe an hour at a time and I go to something else. I'll keep it out of the red with 5 cause the combat can be fun and the soundtrack is metal as ever but I won't be recommending this to fans of classic style DOOM (again, which DOOM 2016 did much better at).

There is literally not a SINGLE bad thing about this game and even Angry Joe gave it a 10, which is very rare. To all the idiots who gave it a crappy score, go play some more Minecrap or Animal Crossing and leave real games to men. I can't believe someone gave it a 5 because multiplayer is lackluster.....SORRY TO BUST YOUR BUBBLE BUT DOOM HAS NEVER BEEN ABOUT MULTIPLAYER. Some other idiot also only gave it a 7 because there was too much going on for him to handle. What a pathetic excuse to rate a game. See what I mean about idiots? There are just too many of them out there.

By the end of the game you are sick to death of stumbling across yet another jumpy puzzle that feels desperately out of place in this iconic all action series.

It agonises me to agree with the wife (when it comes to computer games - good save) but i just feel it could have been a bit darker too. Its more of a nit picky criticism but this sequel felt more cartoony than previous versions.

All in all a good game but you cant help but feel it could have been so much better without the unnecessary platforming just comes across as a bad call that the developers persisted with.

Dont believe the hype from some reviewers giving this a 10/10 and branding it the best shooter of our generation, along with many other nonsense statements. Its not.
This is a good shooter that leaves a bad taste in your mouth because it could have been much better. Its a must play/buy. But a 7/10

    Great and greatly overrated
Doom Eternal features 2 modes, an online competitive mode where a demon slayer is heavily unfairly matched with infinitely spawning player controlled demons that just isn’t really fun unless you’re on the demon side, so imam just throw that mode away and focus on the reason everyone is buying doom eternal.. its hefty 17 hour long demon filled campaign, and this campaign is really great… here you play as a demon slayer, taking on zombies and demons on earth as well as mars, going through a fairly linear campaign, but one filled with traversal and platforming, which is a very welcomed change.. however I feel this new addition takes a back seat to the straight up demon slaying, which on paper sounds fine, but ultimately it leads to an incohesive feeling world that feels like a bunch of random video game elements stapled together.. and this is Doom Eternals biggest issue…. Nothing feels purposeful, it feels mindless and repetitive from start to finish, none of the levels are memorable, the combat is constant, never giving you a chance to breathe or explore, it’s a headache… playing through doom eternal is an enjoyable headache.. but still a headache…
combat that time around is much more enjoyable though. Enemies having their weaknesses, making almost every battle feel like a puzzle despite feeling mindless at the same time, rarely leading to frustrating encounters.. but don’t get me wrong.. those encounters do exist.. though rare.. theres one over powered enemy specifically that kills all and any fun youll be having with this game in an instant… more specifically in one area of the game where youre trapped with him and a snake enemy, and no ammo or health really around… which brings me to another gripe I have with doom eternal, its health and ammo situation… ammo health and armor really feel nonexistent in doom eternals world, instead the game relies on you using your abilities to obtain armour and health, you can catch enemies on fire and freeze them, you have chainsaw enemies for ammo… but I just feel like id much rather have ammo drops after killing enemies than forced to find a small one I can chainsaw..wait for that chainsaw to refuel and do it again… the chainsaw system in general is a nonsensical mess… you can store up to 3 chainsaw attacks, however there is no enemy you can kill with 2 fuels… so whats the point… theres 1 and theres 3… and then you have enemies later on that cant be attacked with the chainsaw at all because theyre too big… these enemies should be reserved for 3.. and the middle large enemies killed with 2.. it just leads to fuel hording, and the payoff is never worth it.. but that can be said for this games weapons as well, youre given amazing weapons towards the end of the game, but rarely any fuel to use them, which begs me to ask.. why even give them to me in the first place.. especially the sword… this item didn’t come into play and was basically unusable until the final boss… but if this was that weapons only purpose, I suppose that’s okay… but I feel if that is the case you should’ve just waited longer to give it to me… All in all I do feel Doom Eternal is a great game, its fun zombie slaying to heavy metal, theres a crazy amount of weapons, and different ways to upgrade these weapons, customize them to your gameplay… but just don’t believe the hype… go into doom eternal expecting a great game and not an amazing game or a masterpiece and you surely wont be disappointed…
But if you go in expecting game of the year, youre going to get smacked with level design and gameplay that feels plucked out of the old god of war games with guns stapled to it
    I give Doom Eternal
    an 8/10

Overall enjoyable with several questionable design decisions from the devs. If you played Doom 2016, you already know the strengths. A fast pace, unapologetically hyperviolent , power shooter. Since there's already a litany of praise, I want to take some time to focus on the flaws with this sequel.

    1) There's a very clear 'right way' to play this game. Unlike Doom 2016, the developers all but force you to play Doom Eternal their way to have fun. If you don't routinely and proactively use the Chainsaw to get ammo, you'll consistently run of ammo leading to frustration. If you don't use the flame belch feature for armor routinely, you'll die quickly to heavy and super heavy enemies. If you don't exploit and memorize enemy weak point with certain weapons, enemies feel very bullet spongy and your guns feel weak. After you've mastered the 'dev approved way' to play the game, it's really fun, but it is a frustrating, miserable chore up until that point. This makes me caution casual shooter fans against purchasing this title.

    2) There's a ton of tutorials. After watching several developer commentaries on Doom 2016, I thought the devs understood how important it was to maintain a consistent, engaging pace and gameplay not bogged down by tutorials especially in the beginning. Apparently, I was wrong. By default, Doom Eternal provides you with a tutorial with your first encounter with every new gun, enemy, and ability. This leads to a pace consistently brought to a halt by menus. Since the devs have created a 'right way' to play this game, you need these tutorials to enjoy the game, but it really harms the feeling and pace when a new super demon burst onto the scene for the first time, and you're greeted with a mandatory tutorial telling you exactly how to defeat said enemy. Can't help but think of how other titles like Dead Space use a weak point focused combat without relying on tutorials.

    3) The narrative is again hidden behind codex entries. If you're interested in who the heck are the Sentiels or King Novik or the downfall of earth or the Makyrs, it's all in the codex in the menus

    4) The multiplayer, Battlemode, is a disaster. With assymmetrical multiplayer shooters, the main challenge is balancing the different classes for the devs. In this respect, Doom Eternal's multiplayer may be one of the most poorly balanced assymetrical multiplayer games I've ever experienced...certainly from a AAA studio. There a 2 demons vs 1 slayer which already provides a numerical advantage. The demons can spawn other demons consistently furthering this advantage. The demons have no ammo limitations just timers for abilities. The demons often have mobility advantages/can fly. To win, the slayer must not only kill both demons, but also do so within 20 SECONDS of each other...or the 2nd player controlled demon respawns with half health. Due to these truly awful design decisions from the multiplayer lead devs, the difficulty between playing as a slayer and demon is not even close. The lead designer on the multiplayer is borderline incompetent. Do not waste any of your time on this mode.

I actually hate this game unfortunately! I loved 2016 and Doom 3. Even on the lowest difficulty I find it super frustrating! Please put in a Doom 2016 mode or an even lower difficulty with increased ammo. I will re-review if changes made. Super bummed it is so bad as I bought the collectors edition and now I am not looking forward to extra campaign missions.

A good game, a somewhat disappointing sequel. Mechanics and controls hold up very well, shooting is precise and fast paced and the action is on point. You won't mindlessly shoot AI enemies, you will be forced to think fast or... die. A The campaign was very fun, challenging and something I'll be playing again.

....but the Marauder can be deleted from the games code. I mean that. It's a terrible enemy especially for this game. It is the only enemy that slows game play down to a crawl. And you do one mechanic against him; wait, get shot at see green eyes and shoot with a shotgun. Only a shotgun, any other gun is useless against him as far as I'm concerned. Delete that awful enemy, the fighting mechanic you make us do against him is not fun! Lastly I'd say that there is a lack of freedom in the game with the ammo, armor and health system. An alternative would have been nice, like a classic mode or something. DOOM fan boys will show their disgust with the system by rating 0's and leaving long ranted posts about how much they hate everything, don't listen to them ID Software! Doom Eternal is the most disappointing game I have ever played. The platforming is a disaster, the UI is garish and counter-intuitive, the cutscenes exist, melee probably should have been removed if they were gonna make it this weak. The dash, while good in theory makes normal movement feel slow which is exactly the opposite of how Doom should feel. The platforming is a disaster, the UI is garish and counter-intuitive, the cutscenes exist, melee probably should have been removed if they were gonna make it this weak. The dash, while good in theory makes normal movement feel slow which is exactly the opposite of how Doom should feel. And finally, the ammo management. The max ammo you can hold has been cut by more than half since Doom 2016. Insecure fanboys will shout (and I mean SHOUT) all kinds of justifications about this at you, but the fundamental issue is this: Doom eternal wants you play the game a very specific way. For all the talk about how it's "strategic" it forces you to adopt one very specific strategy--use all the ammo in all your guns then hunt down trash demon and chainsaw it for more ammo. There's two problems with this. First, I don't want to be forced into a specific way of playing the game. Second, the game does a TERRIBLE job telling you that that's the intended way to play and even worse job encouraging it. If you're going to make killing imps/possessed the name of the game, you should make it so they don't stop spawning until the big baddies are dead. And should make sure that they aren't on the other side of the arena than the mini-boss enemies. Having to turn around and sprint away from a mancubus so I can chainsaw an imp in some odd corner of the arena isn't just a limiting design decision; it's an objectively bad one and on that runs counter to the supposed "keep pushing forward nature of Doom."

Again, the fanboys who can't stand hearing their precious criticized will tell you that this is so you can't rely on one weapon, but you don't need an ammo limit to do that anyway. The devs did a great job ensuring that each weapon has it's uses, you can't ignore any of them. In fact, the ammo limit hurts here, because often you're forced to use less-than-ideal weapons simply because they're the only ones with ammo.

I feel it enforces you in a vulnerable state where I don't feel totally in control. They feel unilateral since each time you see one, it indicates a place you MUST go. The running and shooting feels great (litle hiccups with some elements like props or wall shutting you off or too complicated level art that causes you to hit collision that you did not see). 9/10

Visual : The visual is gorgeous. Perhaps some low points are reuse of some pieces around (like the mechas) or statues with some shader or materials that also could be improve in some places. Other than that, it is mindblowingly stunning. Animation is a treat. FX are awesome. Lighting is delightful. Environments are just crazy. 10/10 for visuals.

    Music : 10/10... jesus

    Cons :

Overall I feel the game is too stressful. I feel I get PTSD each time I want to get back to play. It is even forcing me to take 1 hour sessions each time. In comparison, I was able to binge 2016. Can't do on this one. It is a con for people that just can't take dying alot and shooting their hearts out.

Some features are just plain frustrating. The first time you play, ammo are just... a nail in the foot. You get around later with the battle patterns and using chainsaw on smaller mobs become's a reflex, but for a time, it is really annoying. The purple glue is frustrating in combination with big fights. The collisions around the pools are not clear, sometimes you get stuck trying to walk out. I would fix the collisions to ease out the player path.

The regular punch.... god. It is by far the most low point of this game. Why model DoomGuy with huge biceps if it just to make him push demons around. Gameplay wise, it is a really frustrating change from 2016 where the punches felt great. Please change this.

Alot of bugs on my playsession. I don't know how ultra-nightmare works, but 2 times i was forced to just reload last checkpoint. If you can't reload lastcheckpoint in that mode, I think it is a game breaker.

I love the game, don't get me wrong. The little nitpicking shows the game high standard. Definitly a buy for people who needs actions and to stump demons around! RIP AND TEAR, UNTIL IT IS DONE!.

The level design throughout the game as been changed to help you adapt to the new gameplay style. You'll need to keep moving by swinging, dashing and jumping between platforms and walkways to ensure your victory. This change with the movement coupled with an AI that will show you no mercy make for a shooter that is both fun and a force to be reckoned with. The story is solid as well, giving a little more backstory to The Doom Slayer through cutscenes that are more cinematic this time around. In addition to that Doom Eternal also expands on the Doom lore and answered some questions fans may have been left with at the end of Doom 2016 via Codex Entries. The game has also improved with the graphics as well. While Doom 2016 was designed with more horror elements in mind, with darker environments and a color pallet mostly consisting of brown and red, Doom Eternal has a far more vibrant array of colors. Higher quality textures and model improvements for the demons help them stick out from the background more while also changing up a few designs from 2016 to look closer to their original 1993 designs. With all this the only real gripes I have with the game is I wish it was a little longer and I wish there was more to the multiplayer. I feel Doom 2016 had a story that was longer by maybe a few chapters with definitive Acts in between each major boss. With Doom Eternal I feel like it was all just one really long act. The Multiplayer is also lacking slightly, with only one game mode at the time of writing this it can get stale after a few matches. Overall, Doom Eternal is incredible! With many different ways to replay the game once you've completed the campaign, collectables which give rewards such as high resolution models of all of your enemies and soundtracks from previous ID software titles, on top of a gory mess of fun makes, Doom Eternal my FPS of 2020. Its colorful, its arcady, its fun and just great to look at. Makes doom 2016 look like crap in comparison. And to address some of the arguments made by some of the negative reviewers would also not fit in the word cap for the things i have to say about them. but the one thing i will address is "its to cartoony and arcady. if you loved the last game you are going to hate this one."

1st) if you loved doom 2016 so much then i would assume that you would have followed the progression of eternal. and if you did do so the you would know that they were going to go with a more cartoony and arcady art style. if you want a gritty serious game you cans stick with cod, doom 3, and doom 2016, while me and the rest of us will have fun with this game.

The graphics are once again top notch, but this time with lots more variety in the environments which add a much more diverse, vibrant colour palette to the game which I found brilliant. Some magnificent scenery on display, with some truly breathtaking views if you take the time to look around. But that will normally have to wait till you've blasted your way through the demonic horde around you as you're thrown into intense combat sequences all the time.
I've heard a lot of criticism towards the platforming and I find it totally unfounded. Grabbing ledges and walls works really well. You climb quickly, are able to throw yourself off a wall a great distance, swinging from poles flows really fluidly into the movement and you don't even have to press a button to do so. I found these platforming sections to be a nice reprieve to balance out the intensity of the stages, giving you a short time to compose yourself before being thrown into the next enemy encounter. I will say, before you're fully comfortable with the distances you can travel (given the extra jump distance when jumping from a climbable wall, and using the double dash) there can be times when it's a little tricky to instantly grasp where you're immediately jumping to next, but never found it an issue that stopped me for more than a few seconds.
The game very quickly opens up the mobility aspect of the game more than ever, being able to double jump from the beginning and shortly into the campaign unlocking a double dash. Which used in combination with the various swing poles, and platforms will see you see you zipping around arenas at breakneck speed. Which you will absolutely need when faced with the ferocious AI which even on normal difficulty is deadly accurate, and constantly bearing down on you.
Despite having all these acrobatic dodging capabilities however, you are still without question the most dangerous one on the field. The Doom Slayer's arsenal has been buffed with some new additions that give you even more ways to deal death to hell's minions. All new additions, the shoulder mounted flamethrower, ice bomb, Unmaykr, and Crucible blade, which is in my opinion the coolest looking sword ever and insanely powerful to match! All the weapons of Doom 2016 are back, with some of their looks redesigned, and in my opinion looking better than ever! The combat loop has changed, and requires a lot more thought than ever before, as to be effective in this game you'll need to be constantly switching between most all the weapons to enable you to take advantage of enemy weaknesses, keeping your health, armour, and ammo up by glory killing, flaming, and chainsawing the fodder demons, all while dashing and jumping around to dodge an onslaught of enemy attacks. I can understand why some people are finding this new system a bit overwhelming, it really cranks up the intensity to 11 almost every time you enter a combat area, and forces a more fast paced and complex play style than it's predecessor. But for those it clicks with, or those who take the time to get to grips with it, when you nail a combat area it really makes you feel more badass than ever! Dominating countless demons in a beautiful dance of death, unleashing such a vast array of awesome weaponry, all to the hardcore heavy metal master pieces of Mick Gordon, which once again fit the pace and style of this Doom perfectly.
My biggest gripes with the game were the Marauder not being properly explained in the tooltip. You SHOULD NOT stay mid range against him at all (wait at far range, dodge an axe, and he will most always run straight to you and do a green eyes move, which knowing when it's coming makes it infinitely easier to counter), and also found the Ballista to be far more effective against them than the super shotgun, as is shown in the demonstration. Following it's advice led me to a lot of frustration, constantly eating attacks off them. I do still find the 'immune to damage' approach to enemy design a bit cheap, and quite contrary to Doom's overall philosophy. However once I learned how to approach him I did come to appreciate this enemy a lot more, how it's such a variation to the others and makes you have the think outside the norm. LOVE the visual design of them too.
Overall just a magnificent game that I would gladly recommend to any shooter fan.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is honestly one of the best FPS games I’ve had ever played before. The movement in this game (for some reason a big criticism about this game) is very fluid especially after getting the “Air Control” rune and combined with the good controls, I like it, but I honestly disagree with about how people say this game focuses on the air movement when in reality it’s **** cool to swing around like a monkey and it’s supposed to help you to get around arena environments easier. Overall I feel like the game does put a lot of pressure on you in terms of ammo, yes I did like how I had a very large supply of ammo in DOOM 2016, but having less ammo ment that I had to be smarter about the weapons I used, since you only have such limited ammo, the game does give you tips for specific characters like for the marauder you need to shoot him when his eyes turn green or for the mancubus that you shoot out his hand cannons, cannons? (plus I loved how fluid the crucible felt like). But obviously you can collect the sentinel crystals all around the game to get more health, armor, and ammo. Something else that came out to me is some people are saying how the story is flat, it’s a doom game, it’s not supposed to be a game based on a huge ass story.

Now my only complaint is about the Battlemode (which gave this rating a 9) Now yes I do know it isn’t the “show” of the game but when I played battlemode for the first time playing as the slayer I was being pretty overwhelmed about the amount of things you have to take in, take for example, needing to pay attention where the demons are, needing to chose the right time to use the chainsaw etc. Those did not really affect me afterwards but some of the demons are pretty strong in there own ways, especially the marauder. But overall, it’s a cool idea, but it was just kind of if ID threw a dart at a board blindly and almost got to the bullseye but didn’t really hit it at all.

But I can highly recommend this game for mostly its campaign. So if you’re thinking of buying the game, buy it, but if you want to waste more money for like the deluxe edition then I suggest looking a bit deeper into the game to see if you like it.

Essentially a mess of a game trying to create a “thinking man’s action game” (said by the lead dev) out of what should be adrenaline focused, fast pace action. Ultimately what comes down to is that it doesn’t accomplish its own objective either because you will be just memorizing weaknesses and prioritize the high targets while keeping few fodders around for ammo instead of killing them indiscriminately like a Doom Slayer should be. They created a terrible mechanic for a game that didn’t need it. And to create the said delusion, they limit your ammo and your freedom to play. And to solve the low ammo issue, they introduced another dumb mechanic of infinitely respawning enemies. This approach is akin to say, The Elder Scrolls Six game hypothetically forcing players to do the main quest line first in order to promote “story driven game” by devs—destroying what made the previous series great. 0/10 to balance the fanboys.

It's great. Intense action, lots of it, and no hand holding. Seems like it's a little too difficult for some but I like the challenge.

I thought this game was gonna be good, but I didn't expect it to be THIS good.

    1) Combat

The developers have stated again and again in interviews that they want this game to elicit similar strategies to a game of chess. Each enemy type having specific strengths and weaknesses. And I must say: they succeeded. This idea came through beautifully in the finished product!

And it wasn't just the enemies. The Slayer's moveset had some more strategy put in as well! Most notable is the lack of ammo in your reserves. You have very little ammo in this game and you're constantly running out. However, this actually comes off as a plus. Why? Because it gives you the opportunity to unleash your chainsaw on the closest demon fodder! What's more, is that your chainsaw fuel constantly recharges on it's own (and rather quickly too) so you'll never be without ammo if you play your cards right.

    2) Style Change

There's been a slight, but very noticeable, style shift from the last Doom game. Its surprisingly silly and cartoony, and I'm kinda into it. A lot more Demon punching slapstick. Plus, the ammo/health pickups greatly resemble the original, magical, floating Doom pickups, giving it a more cartoony/fantasy vibe. A bit of an adjustment from Doom (2016), but all in the service of making the game more arcade fun.

And a bit of a side note: Eternal is a whole lot more colorful, and I totally dig it.

    3) Exploration / Level Pacing

In Doom (2016), my biggest problem with the game was that the levels were a slog to get through. This was mostly caused by the fact that I was constantly switching between a combat mindset and an exploration mindset. I'd complete a combat encounter, then explore the area for collectables. This slowed the game down to a crawl.

In Eternal, this isn't a problem. I can safely skip all the collectables in a level and focus on the combat. Why? Because of the simple addition of fast travel; unlocked near the end of each level. Once I reach the end of a level, I can fast travel back to key sections and find everything I need to make my inner collector happy!

And if you don't care about searching the level for weapon upgrades, you can skip exploration entirely! You're awarded these through combat challenges as well. So don't worry if you're not into playing hide n' seek with collectables.

    4) Story

Probably the most divisive part of the game are the prominince of the story and cutscenes. Not to worry! If you're not into that, they aren't essential to you're enjoyment, and they're completely skippable. (Except for the opening 30 seconds, but it's not story based or anything like that.)

Of course, if you're like me, you will be very interested to see where the story goes. There's a whole lotta story beats involving the Slayer's past that I think y'all will like. I certainly did. Anyways, its kept rather vague, so if you want to know everything, better bust out those Codex entries.

However, if you're not interested at all in the story there are still some Codex entries you might get a kick out of! Take a look at "History of the Sentinals - Part IX" (Last 2 Paragraphs), "History of the Sentinals - Part XIV" (All of It), and "Super Shotgun" (Last Paragraph). All of those are pretty badass.

    5) Summary

The only thing keeping it from a 10/10 are some minor nitpicks. This game is amazing and I highly recommend it.

New gameplay additions, like the bloodpunch, flamer and whatever the sword-thingie is, offer further variety, without detracting from the game's incredibly high and fluid pacing. There isn't really a narrative, and why should there be? Its the ultimate power fantasy. One that never fails to offer degree of intimidation however, with some very difficult levels. Its far harder than the previous game, with the new enemies and limited ammo (nicely forcing you to play around the many and varied weapons) massively upping the difficulty.

Despite being one of the best shooters of this generation, there are still some gripes i have with this instalment. Firstly, tedious, uninspired platforming sequences i think were a lazy design choice in an effort to add further variety. The game's hub, where you often find yourself between main missions, isn't interesting enough to warrant its existence. A new multiplayer mode is fun, but i think it far from makes up from the removal of the main multiplayer mode seen in the previous game; it feels like a step-backwards. Last point, and a glaring step-backwards, is the far fewer customisation options. Seems strange they removed these features, and i'm unlikely to continue playing much now as a result.

An absolutely spectacular game, and one of the early highlight games of 2020. Doom Eternal will make you think as you kill, pushing your mind to its limits. That’s not a bad thing. It’s the perfect trip to hell.

Doom Eternal is an outstanding entry in the series marredby a few setbacks. There is a ton of content including one of the best shooter campaigns I have played this generation. The push and pull method of the combat is addictive to master and a blast to play. Everything looks and sounds fantastic and this is a game that makes me smile as a fan since the beginning. While the generation may be coming to an end, Doom Eternal is one of the games that will send it off with a bang.
