If you’re on the market for a simple rogue-lite that doesn’t demand too much focus and perseverance, Devious Dungeon will serve you well. If, on the other hand, you enjoy the intricacies that this type of game is usually known to adopt, you’re likely going to feel somewhat disappointed. Devious Dungeon is a passable game at best, but one that’s admittedly fun nonetheless.

If you’re looking to pick up a small indie game that you can sink five or six hours in to without a great deal of difficulty, then this is the game for you. If you’re expecting more, you may be left disappointed.

Note: I played this game with a wired Nintendo Pro controller that is programmed to my Steam account. Use a controller. I highly recommend it and it's less of a pain.

Devious Dungeon is a medieval focused action platformer with RPG style upgrades. The levels are called portals. Each level is randomly generated and is pretty easy to navigate through. Hidden rooms are not hard to find but will give you extra XP. After three levels, you'll run into a checkpoint to buy upgrades or heal up. As you progress, you'll run into stronger creatures that hit harder. Some of them are just re-skins of previous monsters so just treat them as roid versions of the previous monsters. After unlocking four portals, unlock the boss stage. Each boss has their own unique mechanic that is easy to figure out.

Overall: My only complaint is that the maps feel like the same thing but using different textures. Either than that, I have zero complaints. I enjoy that I can use a controller instead of a keyboard. I grew up playing platformers on the console so I felt more at home with that option. It's a fun and simple platformer and a great time killer. The graphics are simple and pleasing to the eye. You don't really need a whole lot to make a fun game.

The simple to pick up and play style when it comes to the gameplay makes the game very addictive and it was also pretty fun at the same timeThe simple to pick up and play style when it comes to the gameplay makes the game very addictive and it was also pretty fun at the same time as well. There are plenty of upgrades you can buy along the way in the game and I was pleasantly surprised to see that these upgrades actually improved you. The combat and platforming elements lack in terms of variety both of these aspects have been done well and remain tight and responsive throughout. Even though the presentation side of the game is a little on the basic side I still enjoyed what both the visuals and sound design had to offer. The combat gets repetetive quite quickly and some more moves would’ve been nice to see here. I found the gameplay to not be challenging enough and this did make me lose interest in the game a little. There isn’t much creativity present when it comes to the enemies and I especially found that to be an issue when it came to the boss battles. Overall Devious Dungeon does the simple things extremely well and simple is exactly what this game is and whilst the lack of depth holds the game back in certain areas I still enjoyed this game for the most part. The gameplay takes no time at all to get used to and this does give the gameplay an addictive side to it. I would however have liked to have been challenged a little more because the gameplay doesn’t really get too rough and the basic boss battles don’t help matters either. The combat is also a little on the basic side as well and a few more moves would’ve been a welcome addition because the combat and platforming that is available to you has been done well. Another aspect of the game that’s been done well are the upgrades. There are multiple upgrades for you to purchase along the way and the best thing is that these upgrades actually improve you making progressing through the game very worthwhile. At the end of the day then whilst there are better games in the genre Devious Dungeon is still a worthwhile investment because it delivers a fun and enjoyable time without being too taxing. Expand
