This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you are expecting a new entry to the Destroy All Humans franchise in terms of story, that might be still years away. However the only thing that hinders it a bit is the fact that it follows the original 2005 story to a near perfect tee. As for gameplay, weapons, and over all executing the games namesake is an incredible journey to a simpler time when games where made with love and not a needless cashgrab. If you are new to the series or just a longtime fan it's a welcome addition to a cult classic. Here's hoping it doesn't take another 15 years to journey back into the space boots of crypto. Expand

Great game. I use to play this game all of the time. It’s also so nice to see a game that’s not pushing social politics and political agendas into itself. It’s even nicer to see a game that has free speech and a sense of humor without being paranoid about everything it says because it’s worried about offending people. Black Forest Games didn’t just want to remake the game but our memories of playing the game. Did they succeed? In my opinion, yes, in fact, I believe they made the game better than I remember. It’s not perfect, there are still a few disappointments and annoyances, but great galaxies the remake not only managed to subvert my expectations but even exceed them! It surprised me in so many ways, and overall I had a blast with it. I can’t wait to replay it over and over just as I did with the original back in the day!

Fans of the series have no reason not to pick it up. It’s the game we love with a few changes to keep it fresh, a lot of fun new bells and whistles, and a gorgeous new coat of paint, for twenty dollars less than what the original game cost. If you’re a newcomer and you’re looking to try something unique and fresh, you love sci-fi, destructible sandbox environments and want a game where you can just load up your Spotify playlist and cruise around causing chaos or a fun weekend killer, give the game a look!

    7.5/10 - Very Good/Recommended

    Positives

A well-made faithful remake of a fun, solid cult classic
    Decent challenge for completionists
    Very enjoyable gameplay loop
Absurdly fun psy powers with funny ragdoll physics
    Enjoyable boss fights
Corny story and fun, campy dialogue
Fantastic voice acting, from Richard Horvitz especially
    Gorgeous destructible environments
Actual unlockable rewards, no microtransactions or loot boxes
    More replayability than the original
    Great ‘stress ball’ game

    Negatives

    Some disappointing missed opportunities
Great moments, lines and easter eggs from original not present
Challenges and missions can become repetitive
Potential frame drops on older console versions
    Technical issues, bugs & crashes
Occasional frustrating difficulty spikes, particularly in Capitol City

Personally I adore the remake, it would easily be an 8.5 without all the issues and disappointments, but I do absolutely love the game and I sincerely hope BFG gets the opportunity to remake DAH!2 as I’d really love to see what they can do with it. But I do also hope they get more time to work on it because it’s easy to tell this remake could have been even better than it is if they just had the time. I still weep internally for what could have been a 3D, explorable Mothership.

Here’s hoping THQ Nordic greenlights some patches and DLC, and that humanity isn’t totally wiped out before that can even happen! Fingers crossed for a remake of DAH!2 in 2022!

There isn't a lot in the way of either story or gameplay variety, there are some occasionally insane difficulty spikes (especially towards the end), and overall the experience is very short. If you can get the game at a steep discount (or play through Game Pass like I did) then it's certainly not the worst way to spend a couple of days, but don't feel like you're missing out if you don't get around to playing this one. Still, I am glad I went and did it, and certainly do not regret it. Expand

Crypto is a goofy character that sounds like Jack Nicholson for some reason and the humor falls flat everywhere. It's like playing a Nickelodian cartoon.

The worst part is all the frustrating missions, though. Sometimes you have to defend for an insane amount of time or fight a boss that takes forever. It's not fun and is very contrasting to the missions that take three minutes to complete.

It's an incredibly poorly designed game in the first place, regardless of the quality of the remake. Skip it if you are on the fence.

Fairly boring and unchallenging throughout. Then the final boss throws all strategy out the window and reduces you to a one hit glass cannon dodging missiles, mobs and massive gun spray for about an hour. If that sounds fun. Play this game.

But the first game never really clicked with me even back then, mostly because I played the other 3 games before it, so it felt really outdated & lame by the time I got my child hands on it. That feeling didn’t really go away with the remake if I’m being honest. It’s obviously an improvement over the original but still feels outdated in a lot of ways, ways that I’d still rather go back on the PS2 & play the original 2nd game or even Path of the Furon which is an immense guilty pleasure.
The new graphics are stunningly gorgeous, the framerate is pretty solid on the Series X and I really liked the new dash feature they added, along with various QOL updates. The humor is still great, Crypto & Pox are one of the funniest duos in gaming & I’ll never not love hearing Invader Zim’s voice in literally anything. The game can be a blast to play but not always. This is where I get into the negatives & I wish I didn’t have so many.. First, the story is just.. kinda there? I know these games never have groundbreaking stories but I thought I recalled there being a little more than what we got here. I guess not, but it’s really just an excuse to destroy all humans. Which I wish I got to do more often, but there only being 7 weapons in the game (4 on foot, 3 in Saucer) makes things get old FAST. Once you’re fully equipped it can be fun to blow up cities, but they didn’t bother to update the way your saucer can move & aim like in later games, so you’re stuck going barely higher than a medium sized building for the whole game. When you can barely fly higher than one of the final bosses, it gets really irritating & makes the saucer feel way more sluggish and handicapped than it should. Speaking of the final bosses, lemme address this bullsh*t of a finale. This has got to be one of the WORST ending chapters in any recent game I’ve played. The original fight wasn’t a cakewalk either, but to make it so brutally difficult out of nowhere when the rest of the game was simple enough for a 4 year old to finish is insane to me. Trial and error gameplay is not fun & is bad game design period. Same for all of these bullet sponge bosses! Speaking of bad game design, some of the missions here are goddamn terrible. Rage inducing doesn’t begin to describe the early 2000’s chapter design. Escort missions, “protect this spot” missions, stealth missions where you can’t be seen at all plus regular filler missions that have no bearing on the plot. The pacing is all over the place. I didn’t expect them to overhaul every single thing about the game but at least TRY to modernize it! I don’t wanna get too upset about this because it’s a “faithful remake” (I really f**king HATE that term) of the 1st game of a series that’s been dormant for over a decade & they probably put all of the budget into making the game look gorgeous, but I can’t help & feel that if you’re gonna do a remake, GO ALL IN ON IT. Don’t be like modern Pokémon remakes & simply put a fresh coat of paint over a wall with a hundred holes in it. I’m sorry I didn’t enjoy this game more. It’s really being uplifted by my joy of the series being back, I just wish they didn’t put so much focus on the weakest game in the series without fixing most of the flaws it had back in the 2000’s. I’m still really excited for Destroy All Humans 2 ReProbed coming out next month, 2 was always my favorite & I have a ton of nostalgia for it, but I hope it doesn’t fall into the same pitfalls as this first remake did. Hopefully we end up getting a proper Destroy All Humans 3..

Destroy All Humans! is hard to criticize. It's not a bad game, it's just a product of its time. So you can only recommend it to those who liked it in 2005. These players will appreciate an upgraded visuals and laugh at silly, but still funny jokes. For others, it's a game with a repetitive gameplay and unremarkable visuals.

Destroy All Humans! is an integral remake of a very unique game that still offers quite a bit of charm and a lot of fun 15 years after its original release. Unfortunately, the satirical tone is not always in good taste, especially in 2020, and the sadistic gameplay gets a bit sloppy after a few hours.
