As it seems with most online games, Destiny is more fun playing with good friends. The lore is OK, yet wholly uninspiring and unimaginative. The hype became bigger than the game, and in those regards, nothing will ever be what everyone hoped it would be, but taken at face value, the experience has been fun. It's a good game to pass a couple of hours with friends a few times a week.

If you're expecting a traditional FPS you're going to be disappointed. Bungie did a great job establishing the ground work for the first ever MM0/RPG FPS. The Gameplay is fantastic, the environments are amazing....now about that story..Oh and dont pay attention to the 14 year olds giving this a 5 and below. They don't hate the game..they just hate themselves.

Look. In no way is this game a 5; that's ridiculous. As soon as I started playing this game, I couldn't put it down. This is truly one of the greatest game I have ever played, with great atmosphere, awesome models and stunning graphics. If you are thinking about buying this game, do. Without hesitation. Trust me, you will not be dissapointed.

Fantastic game that will grow and change over time. The most MMO-like experience I've had on a console, though the social features of the MMO are going to evolve, I hope. Challenging game at times that I hope will change and grow over the next few years.

Because the game doesn't really start until you reach level 20. The harder missions begin to unlock, the raids open up, more advanced gear boosting various unique abilities open up and start dropping, strikes open up. Sure is the story not really well explained through the campaign? yea, you gotta go online to read it which bugs me. A game should establish the back story in game, not on a separate website. And obviously you're not going to be showered with loot like borderlands so if you don't like a little bit of grinding you may not enjoy this. But the game is solid, the multiplier is fun, and it really begins to open up past level 20 and becomes a unique FPS in a league of its own. Also any review of 0 is just plain wrong, as no game deserves a 0 unless it is completely broken on all fronts. Expand

They could have just added the cooldowns to the weapons themselves and not even have armor drops since they barely ever drop. I played the beta and had way more fun.. seems that they nerfed the shooting from far away and changed the enemy AI to hide some much more that its annoying for me to try and find out where the enemies are hiding. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all let me start of by saying there are a few things you need to know to get the full enjoyment from Destiny. First, the game is pretty boring and difficult if you try to play solo. It becomes infinitely better when joined by 1 or 2 friends. Second, you should adjust the sensitivity for aiming because for some reason the starting is just 3. Now that that is out of the way let me just say Destiny is amazing fun. The strikes are super intense even with 3 people. The strike on the moon with the giant chained up Ogre is madness. I can't even imagine what will be in the raid. I haven't had one connection error since the midnight launch which is amazing for the launch of an always online game. Play the game and judge for yourselves, don't be swayed by all of the trolls or misinformed people giving it 1s. Expand

There is no coherent single player campaign. You don't progress like Halo for example. After every single mission you get into your space ship and fly away. Then when you start the next mission you fly back to the same restart point on the planet and just go do a different quest. It involves traveling through the same area over and over again. Monsters just respawn like in a mmorpg. So there is no feeling that you are making any impact on the world.

The game has you find gear from monsters but also has a bunch of npcs in "town" that sell gear. What the hell is the point of the npcs? Why not just have the gear drop from monsters. Speaking of the gear, its all incredibly generic and boring. I saw nothing interesting to make your character unique through the gear. Best you can hope for is lame things like grenade cool down being slightly lower.

The classes are uninteresting. When you level up you just pick the new ability on the completely linear level up order. There is no difference between you and someone else of your class. There is no way to make your character yours.

Bungie didn't want the entire mmorpg healer/tank/dps rolls so when you level with other people its just everyone shooting the enemies. The lack of rolls causes a complete lack of synergy. Everyone doing their own thing but pointlessly together.

Dying means nothing. You just respawn. Normally you just respawn right where you were and mop up the enemies that were left. Or if its an event you have to start from the beginning which if your underlevel or under geared just leads to frustration as you repeat the same thing over and over yet offers no penalty at all for your failure. With enough attempt you are bound to eventually succeed.

Very disappointing. Made me wish I was playing Halo, Resistance, you name it. It didn't fill my craving for a first person shooter at all. Just made me want to play a good shooter.

Not over the top, but still breathtaking.

The one major complaint I have is the lack of match making for PvE missions. You will run into people during your "quests", but for the most part they are doing their own thing and don't want to join you. They really need to add a mission/group board similar to PoE, allowing you to find/advertise for groups as needed. I know this is the number one feature requested by the community, so I expect it will come at some point.

Another thing they need to implement is some form of main city chat. Either by voice or text. SO many people I can't talk to! Also, where is the clan support? It's on Bungie.com but seems to be disabled...

I honestly think they have delivered a fantastic foundation and a truly fun game, and I hope they continue to build upon it. If they maintain an MMO content model with the only purchases past initial game as ~$10 DLC packs, then I am in for awhile.

I guess people are complaining because they expected an MMO when this game has always clearly been a first pirson shooter. For a shooter fan, this doesnt feel like grinding as it is designed to put you into insane firefights. Best fun Ive had so far is getting a few guys together, turning the difficulty up and going off.

I honestly have yet to find anything I dont like about this game other than the small fire teams (3 max). This one is out of my genre and confort zone but still quite fun. This is not a full MMO, but if your a shooter fan and loved the Halo series, I really dont think you can go wrong!

Or maybe you get free goods. From a robot. Or get mystery goods and build up a score for gambling with your money a lot. Who cares. Many more basic engine bugs than I have ever seen in ANY game (networking and group play). Peter Dinklage could be replaced by any other bored sounding male. They could have probably replaced him with 100 interns and at least had an interesting game.

I have played many games in my life. I have paid too much for indie games, and I have payed very little for games that have given me 100's of hours of entertainment. Given the professional names behind this release, I can only assume that this is either a cash grab (note how no reviewers got pre-release code for reviews), or nobody would tell Bungie that their emperor had no clothes. Back with Halo 2 they scrapped everything and started over at a point during development. This is not the same Bungie.

This game gets one point for teaching me to never pre-order a game again.

Borderlands + Halo + Mass effect with a MMO twist to it... simply amazing. There is a very solid PVP in this game, sure it's not balanced or competitive as Halo (especially the coming Halo 5!), but it's still very solid.

Ton of content solo, coop, pvp, "raids", dynamic events... it really is its own thing, love it! easily a 9/10.

THAT is why they are disappointed, because this game is amazing. It is a beautiful mixture of Halo and Borderlands and somehow doesn't feel even remotely close to a copy of either.

Insert Tyrion Lannister into a computer (err, I mean your Ghost) and he'll tell you baddies are on the way. Hold them off and then Tyrion will tell you something about the story, and where you need to go next. Rinse, repeat.

The story is not engaging in any way. The game, while amusing and somewhat fun to play, isn't engaging like Mass Effect, Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Bioshock, System Shock....any of the great games are. And I would forgive some of this if it weren't for the lack of ability to actually do MMO social things in the game.

I'm not sure Bungie can fix the story issue at all at this point. That ship sailed. They can however make it so people don't have to go to a website like destinylfg.net to find a fireteam to play with. Add a "looking for group" queue where you can specify who you want in your group (like a minimum age, perhaps?)

This game COULD be a 7. But with the state it's in, it's a 4 really. I absolutely regret buying it.

We didn't really know what to expect coming in as we hadn't really followed the hype, but my oh my we were very pleasantly surprised. I have since spent hours on the game playing co op and solo, mostly co op. The gunplay and overall controls feel very responsive and polished, this is complemented by an excellent selection of weapons. Along with this, the maps are quite vast and detailed, a real joy to explore especially with your friends, if not a little small. Killing enemies is very satisfying, especially with the sniper rifles. I also like the idea of the tower as the hub for the game, allowing players to take a break from exploring to come and customise their character. Now, the real element of the game that has kept me hooked for hours upon hours is the character progression and customisation. It feels great to receive new armour, helmets and boots that can improve your character as you level up; it really does feel rewarding and reels me in to continue playing. Also the graphics and music are stunning and top notch.

In saying this, the game has its flaws. The story is meh at best with very repetitive mission structure. This didn't bother me personally as I am more interested in the gameplay elements of the game but it is still a flaw. Also, it seems that the number of players on a map is alway very low. It would be great to have 20-30 people on one server, exploring and taking up missions, creating a fantastic mmo atmosphere. Enemy spawning is also sometimes annoying, as often, you kill a group of enemies and leave for a few seconds, and upon returning the VERY same enemies are back in the same location. This is slightly annoying and makes the game a bit predictable in patrol.

Do not let these negatives turn you off of buying this title, as it is still a thoroughly enjoyable experience if time is invested into playing it. All of these people scoring the game between 0 and 4 are kidding themselves, this is a title worth a try.

    So to sum up:

    PROS:
    -Excellent, responsive gunplay/gameplay
    -Great selection of weapons
    -Vast, expansive worlds
    -Amazing character customisation
    -Top notch graphics and music

    CONS:
    -Poor story
    -Repetitive missions
    -Low numbers in worlds
    -Predictable enemy spawns

    Overall score: 8/10 - Great

I can honestly say I've been a gamer for 30+ years. At this stage in my life, I don't have the time for (or I choose to prioritize other things over) full blown MMO games. I'm also playing competitive shooters less and less (COD/BF, etc.) as the skill level of the players now days makes it a frustrating experience for me.. With my limited game time, I feel Destiny strikes a perfect balance between a fun coop shooter and an MMO RPG. High level concepts from both genres, but not exceedingly deep in either.

The competitive mode is just okay. Playing the game solo, or should I say, antisocially...is just okay. Co-op, however, has been a fun and rewarding experience that will keep me playing for a while. I have 5 buddies all around my age who also purchased the game. We've been tackling missions on the hardest settings and building our characters to compliment each other's strengths & weaknesses. When I do have time to play, I have had a blast with this game and all of my friends feel the same way. There's just enough of an RPG element to keep me wanting to play more, upgrade and make my character as bada** as I can. As a shooter it satisfies my desire to shoot things and embark on these strange lands with friends and kick a** together. This game is made to be played socially in order to really get the full experience. However, I think those wanting a hardcore competitive shooter, or a deep MMO experience will find themselves lacking. This likes somewhere casually between the two. The best experience in my own opinion has been playing co-op. Setting the difficulty high and having to really watch each other's backs, save up your special attacks for the perfect moment, etc. All of these things keep things intense and very enjoyable. I love this game but if you don't have friends who will play with you, it might not be as fun for you.

So why does this game get a 5 from me? Because there's nothing else. The missions (whether additional or story) are all pretty much identical. The amazement of discovering a new world each time a planet is unlocked is soon dampened by the realisation that whilst the enemies look different, the mission parameters are identical. This repetition alongside very limited customisations to weapons and vehicles and a lack of class specific characterisations left me very disappointed. Despite the unfathomable depth of the scenery in this game, the only word I can use to describe it is shallow.
Maybe DLC and patches will fix this game for future players and those willing to pay for it time and time again, but for me it feels like an amazing game that got aborted somewhere along the way, packaged and fired out in to the stores.
I'd love to say the game is redeemed by its multiplayer, but that's simply not the case. The matchmaking isn't good enough for the amount of time it takes and the maps/weapons/vehicles are no better than Halo 2, a game released a decade ago.
Really disappointing. Worth a few hours of your time but I fear the longevity of this game won't extend past that.

I played the "Alpha" for a few hours, I put that in quotes because it's not an alpha, it's basically a demo. The public would never be allowed to play an actual alpha.

Anyways, the more I played, the more bored I got. The missions are nothing but kill X amount of enemies. The enemy spawns are horrendous as they keep respawning so it feels like what you kill doesn't matter. I was

The enemy spawns are horrendous as they keep respawning so it feels like what you kill doesn't matter. I was literally spawn camping enemies at one point. The classes aren't anything special. I looked over the skill tree and there's not much to even look forward to like you later can triple jump instead of double jump. You can't even sprint while reloading, I figured that would be some lame skill you get later on, but I didn't even see that anywhere. The game has aim-assist, which is totally unneeded and there's no way to turn it off. The sensitivity of the camera is too freaking slow, I maxed it out at 10 and I still wanted it like twice as sensitive. The only plus the game has is that you can slide, which is really only good in competitive MP, not so much vs AI.

It seems like Bungie is trying to make Destiny be everything for everyone while being nothing for no one. They got the MMO and co-op aspect. It seems like they are trying to be a bit like Borderlands with classes and powers. The classes aren't different enough and the powers are very underwhelming. The only place I think the game may actually shine is in competitive because it's a decent-to-good shooter and building up your "power" would be fun in competitive. Even upgrading your skills should work in competitive because none of them will make you overpowered really.

I kinda knew this game would be very underwhelming from last year's E3 developer interview where they were saying as a positive that all the classes weren't very different so you'd never regret making the wrong choice, which defeats the whole purpose of classes. And I remember one of the devs was like "we're Bungie and we make great games, so Destiny is gonna be great." If you focused on making a great game instead of taking that for granted, the game may have actually been great. The most entertaining thing about the whole game were all the voice actors like Peter Dinklage and Gina Torres.

The game is just way to repetitive. Ai is just not fun to play against which is a disappointing given that was a staple in the halo series. One of the best things halo had was its dynamic ai that was very organic and always reacted differently. Their are a large variety of baddies but most are forgettable and they seem to do the same things also a bunch of other dumb issues. It playsThe game is just way to repetitive. This is the worst game from bungie to date. Its the old jack of all trades master of none scenario. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game at first glance is quite good but it shows it's flaws eventually. The game drops you off right where the beta started and goes all the way up to where the beta ended. That's right, the missions in the beta are the first missions that can be done in game.

The servers seem to be incapable of doing their job as many players, including me, have had "network problems" which wouldn't be bad as it *sometimes* loads you back into the mission near to location you lost connection. However, 90% of the time you'll end up restarting the mission.

    The story:
The story is nothing to write home about, while there's a very small plot within the story it's just that, very small. Almost non existent. The missions generally consist of get to this location, deploy the ghost and protect the ghost, which can't be killed as far as I'm aware. Judging by the small amount of locations and the small amount of missions per location the story doesn't seem to be a long one. If you just want to play Destiny for the story then I'd recommend renting it as the short story is a clear indication of a focus on the crucible (The generic FPS multiplayer mode)

    Character customisation:
The character customisation isn't half bad. Again, it's nothing to write home about but you rarely see your characters face, which is what the main customisation is about, so it's not really a huge problem.

    Multiplayer (crucible):
As mentioned above the multiplayer mode is just your generic multiplayer that you'll find on other shooters like Call of Duty. The only difference being, you'll be rewarded with exclusive content (in other words content that can only be obtained through the crucible).

    Overall:
Overall, it isn't a bad game but it isn't something to get excited about. Developers like Bungie need to learn that hype is the most effective way to kill a game at launch.

It's a slick, mechanically sound, and lavishly produced shooter that uses beauty to try and mask the potentially great but uninspired gameplay inside. [Issue#117, p.62]

Destiny feels like the key elements of an FPS and an MMO gently resting shoulder to shoulder, instead of being fused together in a truly creative way. It plays and looks great, and offers many, many hours of entertainment to anyone okay with repeating the same tasks, but it isn’t exactly the game-changing science fiction epic we felt it was aspiring to.

An ambitious if repetitive combination of shooter and loot based ARPG. A boost in loot drop frequency could definitely boost the fun/score. [Issue#254, p.47]
