I reviewed Destiny on Xbox 360 after release. I wasn’t impressed then, and I’m not impressed now. Destiny caters to the lowest common denominator of gamers by being shallow and repetitive with a big push towards PvP multiplayer. Bungie lost touch with the market and continues alienating fans.

I picked up Destiny again just before the Taken King launch. I completed all the original content in about 15 hours. I did most of this solo. The new content adds only 7 or so hours of additional play. If fans bought each piece of content separately—Destiny at $60, 2 DLC’s at $20 each, and the Taken King at $40—they would’ve spent $150 for approximately 22 hours of content. That’s expensive, especially since the add-ons don’t enrich the story. Xbox gamers get less playable content than Playstation owners, but they're being charge the same prices. Newcomers can buy all that for $60. So they get a deal. Long-time fans get screwed. Bungie and Activision seem perfectly OK bending over those who stuck around. Could they at least give them lube?

Of course, fans argue that players will spend hundreds of hours replaying it to get better gear. But grinding out gear is insanely repetitive because content is sparse. And despite major plot developments in the Taken King, none of the story elements are cohesive. If players completed TK first and then pursue other quests, none of the plot developments are reflected. It’s like the events never happened. Lazy writing at its finest. Considering Bungie is selling everything as one bundle, they could’ve at least tied it all together.

But Bungie doesn’t stop its screwfest at overcharging fans; they also restrict access to this overpriced tripe. How? No matchmaking on raids or high level strikes. Bungie even prohibits gamers from replaying missions at higher difficulties unless they achieve a specific rank. How must they achieve those ranks? By grinding thru raids and strikes with no matchmaking…. Doesn’t make sense does it?

So players must seek co-op partners outside Destiny. This locks out a sizeable chunk of the player population from enjoying content they've paid for.

According to Forbes, only 20% of Destiny players have completed a raid since launch. That number is low. Despite Bungie’s insistence that raids are too difficult to complete with random players, thousands of people have been doing just that since the game launched. Destiny looking-for-group sites have been pairing random players together to complete any and all Destiny content. And they work remarkably well.

The dungeons in Elder Scrolls Online are difficult too, but thru in-game matchmaking, strangers team up to knock those out. But Bungie truly believes Destiny is the most strenuous game ever created. The studio has a big ego, and this was confirmed by Destiny’s Derrick Carroll when he said: “We’ll find you enemies, but we won’t find you friends.” He was emphasizing Bungie's conviction that tactics are so important in Destiny, matchmaking was excluded on purpose to force gamers to play with friends. If a gamer doesn't have friends, they better find some. Bungie believes that only friends are miraculously awesome enough to complete raids. FRIENDSHIP POWER!! What a load of crap.

That is exactly the wrong mentality for an MMO wannabe like Destiny. For a game that “emphasizes” teamwork, Destiny does everything it can to isolate players. And all because they believe their content is SOOOOOO demandingly challenging, that a group of mere strangers are incapable of completing it. The fact that the gaming community found its own solutions proves Bungie wrong. The entire philosophy behind Destiny is rooted in fallacious notions and pride. But if Bungie wants to continue paddling against the current, let it. Not every gamer knows 6 people who play Destiny, but apparently Bungie believes Destiny is so amazing, everyone owns it.

Anyway, is the Taken King worth the price? Only for new players looking to get a decent co-op experience. Now that everything is $60, the game is somewhat worth it. Borderlands The Handsome Collection and Dying Light are better investments. They offer better customization, more weapons, and flexible gameplay. Plus, Dying Light is getting a huge expansion early next year. Elder Scrolls Online is also a worthy alternative.

Until Bungie beefs up Destiny’s social elements by adding things like optional matchmaking, open chat, and trading, I won’t recommend it. Multiplayer could have been Destiny’s saving grace, but it inexplicably relies on the maligned peer-to-peer connections and contains all the problems that system entails. There is nothing forward thinking about Destiny. It’s a wannabe at all levels and the most antagonistic "MMO" I've ever played. Despite being the most expensive game ever made, Bungie is average at some things, and below average at everything else. It's a $500 million march into oblivion. And the Taken King does nothing to address any of that. It’s more of the same. Pass

I bought the original destiny when it first came out along with the expansion. I will always admit that the game looks, and plays very well. But as far as I'm concerned everything else was awful. I told myself I would not buy taken king because I KNEW it was going to be garbage. Unfortunately for me my group of friends are addicted to this damn game, so after a lot of persuasion II bought the original destiny when it first came out along with the expansion. Oh look, I was right, the game is still garbage. Its laughable that people are saying on here that the opening cinematics are worth it. If I want cinematic, I will watch the avengers or any of the other 100s of films.

As for endgame (which you will reach in about 4 to 6 hours, it's just the same boring grind fest it always was, so no change there.

Still no area chat. Still pathetic 12 player servers. I mean what kind of mmo type experience is this?

The day I return to destiny will be the day where I can explore the galaxy and planets with 100s of people.

3 Strikes, 1 Raid, some "story" mission, and upcoming trial of Osiris (which supposed to be free). I think there are around 4-6 multiplayer maps. It's really hard for me to justify $40 for the new content as a year one player. Worst, they are locking a strike mission and some items from Xbox one player for a whopping one year, since we're didn't buy the PS4. Well I admit the game has3 Strikes, 1 Raid, some "story" mission, and upcoming trial of Osiris (which supposed to be free). I think there are around 4-6 multiplayer maps. It's really hard for me to justify $40 for the new content as a year one player. Worst, they are locking a strike mission and some items from Xbox one player for a whopping one year, since we're didn't buy the PS4. Well I admit the game has been refined quite a bit before launch address some of the tedious grinds, but I feel like these issues should have been addressed before it even come out. So it's really hard to justify $40, given I already paid $100 for this game.

If you didn't buy the taken king, then it's time to quit Destiny because as the contents you already owned are locked away from you as typical. No more level 20+ strike, no more legendary gears, no iron banner, very limited PvP, and etc etc. So in a sense, this game is somewhat of a subscription model, because if you didn't buy the DLC, you're pretty much locked out of the game. As a destiny player, it's going to cost you roughly around $9.10 a month to play this game.

Now the reason I gave 4 score, despite the refinement that they did, is because the game justify the small amount of content by exploiting human addictive trait (like Candy Crush). You will be spending time doing the same missions over and over like a hamster in a wheel until you get that cool items you wanted. That has been addressed to an extent but not entirely. So you're going to see people with OCD sank thousands of hours in to get that one item playing one of the very few strike missions over and over until the odd goes to their favor. And trust me, I highly doubt they enjoy those hours, no matter how tight the shooting mechanic was...

If you really need to have Destiny, I'd say you should wait until it becomes $20 or less. Go outside for awhile. Grinding same mission over and over is not very healthy physically and mentally.

That all being said, TTK improves itself across the board. Worried about a lack of story? The amount of personality and story content provided in the first two missions of TTK alone is more than the entire vanilla Destiny. Want more random stuff to do? Public events have been vastly improved in both fun and difficulty. Bounties have been redesigned for multiple quick pickups rather than a few lengthy grinds. There's a brand new Court of Oryx event that's also a blast to play. Want more end game? PS exclusive strikes have been brought over from year one and the new strikes are twice as cool as the vanilla Destiny strikes. And then we have a new raid as well.

Oh, and Destiny has the best gaming community I've ever experienced.

The mechanics are superb, and the map designs are simply incredible. Plus the community, overall is outstanding. You can find a lot of tips on the Reddit thread and on you Tube that are very helpful. And when you first play this game it is a lot of fun. There are some cool weapons, and a lot of thoughtful utilities that make the game enjoyable. However, as a Day One player, the game environment of Destiny post-TTK is pretty much a time suck and not worth your while. This is due to the mismanagement of Bungie. It is pretty apparent they don't understand that the customer(gamer) should come first. They make a lot of bad decisions, getting rid of elemental primaries, not addressing the latency in PvP(that is still around after 2 years) Changing the Nightfall quest-to name a few, that really make the game not only unworthy your time in the present, but also negate your investment in it for the future. The bottom line is ,it is evident that the guys running Bungie don't have the marketing aptitude to add value to the game consistently. In its current form, this game is a vicious cycle of wasting your time with very few moments of fun the further you get into it. For anyone considering buying it, the PvP part of the game has the most potential, but honestly, it's just not worth it due to the disingenuous of Bungie's game management.

I big improvement over what we have seen the last year from Destiny. In fact Destiny TKK, plus the original release content, is the game Destiny should have originally been. The story is still lacking, but improved with better characters. The new raid is by far the best yet, as its focus is on mechanics and less on overpowering enemies.

Sure there are times in this game where you feel it's repetitive but please tell me a game that doesn't feature doing the same things over and over again. As a loot driven FPS, the grind of getting better gear is no different then The Division or Borderlands. Thing is the gear that you can get from the endgame activities is well worth it not just in terms of making your character better but being unique. Go play The Division right now and tell me what everybody is using in DZ, Incursion, and Challenging modes? All the same stuff. Destiny is unique in the fact that the best gear for one person isn't necessarily the best gear for another. Sure there is a level attached to said gear but just because it has a higher light then your favorite gun doesn't mean your favorite gun is no longer worth using. Destiny has perfected the balance it takes to make sure all gear is relevant not just Exotics. Many people don't like to figure out how to be successful in PvP and wish there was a single build to help make them better but you can't do that in Destiny. There are guns that will improve your chances but in the end you have to actually have skill to beat other players not just the best gear. In closing, Destiny is currently the gold standard of loot based shooters/RPGs because it balances everything and gives the player the ultimate freedom to make their character and play style as unique as themselves. Incoherent/weak story, a convoluted/frustrating loot and leveling system, etc. The Taken King has been a breath of fresh air for this longtime Destiny player because it addresses most of the original game's issues. The story in TTK is much easier to follow and includes better cutscenes and voice work (disclaimer: I'm a fan of Nathan Fillion and his character has a prominent role in TTK). The loot system is also more interesting and reliable (although once you get to the end game, running the hard mode raid, you'll still find plenty of reasons to complain about Bungie's random number generator and loot system). PvP is still fun, if not completely balanced (we'll see how the December update changes that), and there are a lot of good maps to play on (although I wish Bungie would put some of the older maps into rotation more often...it seems like if it isn't a TTK map, it rarely shows up in the rotation). All in all, I think you'll really enjoy Destiny TTK if you enjoy good first-person shooter mechanics and loot-based games. And your experience will be even better if you have a regular group of friends to play with. That said, if you aren't into FPS, loot-based games, or don't really like multiplayer games then TTK won't be for you. Expand

Destiny: The Taken King is still a very flawed game and far from the 2013 hype leading up to Destiny's original launch. While there is a decent amount of content it still falls short for its price point. One additional patrol space really isn't that much when you consider the base game's four locations added up to a game that many players felt was void of content after a short time. BungieDestiny: The Taken King is still a very flawed game and far from the 2013 hype leading up to Destiny's original launch. While there is a decent amount of content it still falls short for its price point. One additional patrol space really isn't that much when you consider the base game's four locations added up to a game that many players felt was void of content after a short time. Bungie admitted (or lied) that the original game was suppose to have game spaces 5-10x the size of Cosmodrome and possibly multiple locations on each planet. This new space might be better designed and have more to do in it, but the game still has you backtracking and treading through the same hallways over and over.

The story campaign and cutscenes are executed well enough, but completely ignore the base game's story with the stranger. I am sure that will be continued in a future DLC, but it just doesn't flow that well. The decision to replace Peter Dinklage with Nolan North was also something I do not think worked. I never thought Peter was the problem (at least not always), but the fact that the writing was poor. Even people who support the voice acting change admit this fact. Right now Nolan North's Ghost just feels like a 343 Guilty Spark impersonation while Peter Dinklage made the Ghost feel like a unique character aka Dinklebot.

The strikes play to Destiny's strengths, but do not solve the problems of the game. It's very easy to skip past enemies in the campaign and strikes and the only real threats come inside very small circular rooms where the AI can not be easily exploited. The AI at its core is still very limited at range and easily exploitable in larger locations however. The new enemies and strike mechanics are welcome additions, but nothing mind blowing or dynamic. The King's Fall raid is where game play best shines as it both plays to Destiny's strengths as well as introduces many unique and thoughtful challenges.

The journey to level 40 isn't anything special and the hyped change in light design was misrepresented. You get from 34 to 40 in just a few hours max. You are still going to have to grind gear and bounties to progress to end game content (because light level still matters) and play the same strikes over and over again to raid. The new subclasses are fun, but they also nerfed some previous subclasses and abilities. Blink for example was nerfed very hard and isn't even fun for me anymore. This was probably to make the new subclasses more attractive, but it doesn't feel right. It's a stab to established game mechanics and progress that players made during Year 1.

Destiny brings a new heavy weapon class with Swords which can be used offensively and to block. They mostly play like Crota's sword even drawing you to third person (personally I would have liked first person swords). I also don't understand why it took this long for ONE additional weapon class. In the 2014 beta, I thought where are the melee weapons, elemental flamethrowers, bows, launchers, dual weapons, and anything unique like we saw in Halo? Bungie still has a ton of room to grow here which so far has been painfully slow.

The truth is a lot of Destiny weapons blend because each weapon class only has a couple different variants because damage (impact) and rate of fire are streamlined. This could be argued it was designed this way for balance, but I tend to suspect 30 fps plays a role as well. The new scopes and weapon designs do help alleviate this problem. However, the problem then reemerges because old weapons are not brought into the Taken King. You can not infuse old weapons and are forced to grind new gear. This is a decision I do not agree with. Every DLC has taken away weapons while adding some and it just seems like a backwards decision. I understand a lot of the guns now have nerfed impact and old guns would be better, but they could at least make the light level comparable instead of the drastic year 1 drop. Right now old gear is just irrelevant in most of the taken king. Also, a lot of the armor seems to be copy pasted from year 1.

Then there's PVP which is still broken with horrible lag compensation and networking. Autoaim and instant kills are still a staple and matchmaking lacks real choice and variety. The new maps are all forgettable and blend rather than introducing anything unique or dynamic. At this point it's clear that Bungie just wants the COD crowd to like their game as vehicles have been ignored completely. At 30 fps w/ horrible lag compensation, instant kills, and crutch autoaim Destiny PVP remains a joke.

Overall, Destiny's The Taken King still lacks content and if you found Destiny boring you will find this equally boring. It was still arguably a cut portion of the original game before Activision reworked it with glimpses of Taken King content at 0:37 + 1:52 from June 10, 2013's "Official Destiny E3 Gameplay Trailer"

6/10 is generous if you consider I dropped this game in just a few days.

Even the destiny app is really well done. The gear design was always very good, but now there is a rich variety of very high quality weapon and armor design, which makes the loot hunt much more exiting. It is geat that you can now collect items and store them in an "album". The events are pretty engaging and the new campaign is decent. While I did not like the lack of story and lore explanations at the beginning, I have started to like the mysterious feeling of the game and its world. The lore texts are mostly poor, but there are some great lines.
I am excited to see how the game develops into the future.

While a much more solid game than Destiny's original release, it's still a heavily flawed game. Story is very much lacking and they expect you to read content outside of the game. The expansion has more re-used assets than I've seen in any MMO, aside from one new area, you're taken to old planets once again to fight the same enemies you already have.

The expansion has more re-used assets than I've seen in any MMO, aside from one new area, you're taken to old planets once again to fight the same enemies you already have.

Nightfalls and Raids still force you to find parties outside of the game, as Bungie can't be bothered to make a rudimentary LFG system. Raids also feel really awkward in Destiny, as up until that point it's a loot-driven game like Borderlands or Diablo. Suddenly you're stepping on panels, never moving, never using your cool weapons you found, simply not having fun. I'm not new to raiding, I've done it for years, it just doesn't seem to fit in a game like Destiny.

The game has very little replayability. You're mostly playing old content, farming the same bosses, and doing the same old things. It gets stale pretty quickly.

PvP is just as bad as it's ever been. You might as well not even try unless you've already got nice Legendaries or Exotics. It's still a laggy mess where people camp with shotguns or wait for their supers to be up to get free kills and then hide again.

Overall it's an okay game if you're looking to kill time for a week or two, but I wouldn't recommend it for anything longterm.

While it may add some content and fix many problems with Destiny, there is a glaring fault. I have to pay $40 to fix a game. This is essentially a pay-to-play patch. And if I don't buy? The amount of content I can access goes from %100 to ~%40. The Taken King is yet another failure for Bungie.

My issue is the pay to play payment structure that has been devised and literally blindsided first year loyal players and fans? I played through the Beta and bought the seasons pass when Destiny launched (total for game and season pass $100)…now I am asked to pay another $40…all my exotic weapons I worked countless hours to get are obsolete and if I don’t pay I can’t level up further?

The kicker is if I just waited 1 year I could have paid the exact same price of $100 and gotten the entire game (all expansions including TK). If I had known this up front I would have had no problem waiting.
I think everything else that needs to be said has already been said by others.

Users that state all these points are irrelevant to the actual game are fooling themselves. It’s about taking a stand for what is right. The consumer is being blatantly ripped off…they aren’t even trying to hide that fact. They expect us to throw money at the screen and they laugh about it. Those that fall for this scheme deserve what they get.

Activision and Bungie have lost another loyal customer. Unless they come up with some sort of compensation or massive incentive for first year players, I will not be opening my wallet for this con-artist company ever again. Can't wait to see what they have in store for the next DLC.

My advise is just wait until Bungie release a game of the year addition later in 2016 you will be able to get this along with the game and some limited access to earlier dlc.

But be advised if you buy the $60 version with the game and this taken king, you will NOT get full access to the other two as promised, it would seem that bungie have removed much of those two dlcs and you will only get a little bit of them.

Work to get rewards is the theme here - no fun allowed. The content is much smaller than it appears at first, and the vast majority of the so-called quests involve repetition of old content. Bungie seems to have a philosophy based on their players not being "good enough" or deserving of rewards. It's no surprise that many players dropped off and joined more rewarding and fun games. Instead of adding new areas to explore or monsters to try your combat skills on, the additional content has thus far consisted of a pointless Halloween grind, a refer-a-friend scheme, and raid challenge modes that micromanage your gameplay in exchange for character upgrades. As for the player community, it is shrinking and becoming insular. Like a big clique, this game is hardly inviting to most players. Exclusion and elitism has been a strong theme in Harold Ryan's and Luke Smith's designs. Other than having great basic gameplay with easy and smooth aiming, agile jumping, and elegant special abilities, this game offers nothing but a laundry list of chores for players if they want to progress. These chores are so menial that Taken King will have you craving the depth and interaction of a simple fetch & return quest in games like Fallout, ESO, and Final Fantasy. The player vs player is run amok with lag switching and/or terrible lag and net code. Matches take a long time to find and player count seems thinner than Modern Warfare 2. Once again, there is also no group finding tools or matchmaking for most of the important activities in the game. This is because quite simply, Luke Smith and the most hardcore fans of the game believe we aren't good enough to actually succeed at the content and that we would potentially ruin their play experience. That adds an absurd layer of extra work that players must do just to even try content. There's many cool weapons to acquire in the game, and it's great to get weekly orders from the gunsmith (although the ranking method is even more inane than bounties with the repetitive test weapon chores) but players will find very little storage space or opportunity to substantially upgrade the attack values of these weapons. Bungie seems to only be in touch with a dwindling and insular community of twitch streamers and their followers. Basically, this game is anything but fun, and Bungie's attitude and development team needs to go for any hopes of improvement. Expand

This expac does not live up to its $40 price. It should honestly be $15

The story is boring and fails to keep my interest, save for a few cutscenes. Bungie tried to add a narrative to Destiny, but it fell flat. The Taken King is literally the same formula as the other two expacs: -Do the Story and get to level 40 -GRIND through strikes to get that light level up (and I mean GRIND)

I'll admit, TTK had my interest for about a week. I was addicted to the grind again, but not for long. I've played too many MMOs and too much Year 1 Destiny for this to happen again. The Grind addiction faded and I was faced with another failure of an expac. Sorry, but doing the same strikes over and over again to increase my light level is not the game variety that I have been looking for.

If you got supreme enjoyment and lasting entertainment out of the last expacs, go for it. If you thrive on the grind, buy the Taken King. But if you're a person who is sick of seeing the same MMO formula, don't spend a single cent on this DLC. Save your $40 and put it towards Fallout 4. You'll thank yourself come November 10th.

For new players the main story has been slightly improved, the side kick Ghost has a more lively energetic personality, and NPCs give you real quests. However the majority of the main story's lore is still only accessible through Bungie.net, which is a huge problem as the lore is genuinely interesting.

For old players looking to return, don't even bother. The old content hasn't been updated enough to be worth revisiting and it's still a massive grind.

As for The Taken King itself, it starts off actually feeling like a real video game, it has cut scenes and dramatic moments and interesting story development. This however quickly falls apart around 70% through the main story line of TTK, it becomes gradually more and more repetitive and grindy as you progress.

After you beat the main story of TTK, that's when it goes straight back to how Destiny was before release, a massive slog of the same thing over and over again. You will spend hours grinding and waiting for random drops and treasure just to complete the post game quests, which are hardly worth the rewards you get for your time.

One boss fight in the post game is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen in a video game. You have to fight a flying ghost shooting purple bombs at you, while avoiding mines that come back after they go off, dodging ceiling flame throwers, fight through self replicating enemies that are spawned through a black ball that slows you down when you're near it and the room is filling with poison gas. It's not fun at all and it's just a pain.

Overall this game is not worth getting for any price, it's just too much nonsense and not enough fun.

They learned from the mistakes of Crota (with all it's cheeses and solo players and stuff) and made something that requires great team work and overall skills.

I've been playing a lot since it came out, and I still feel I scratches the surface with all these quests and game modes.

If you look only at The Taken King and ignore that it is an expansion, the game would average higher. Unfortunately, it acts more as a paywall and locks any users of the original game out of the content the game came with instead of adding new content. The game is still a long gear grind with no way to join the end game raids without the correct amount of friends all playing the same time since there is no way to get randoms. I gave a 2 instead of a 1 since it would be a decent game if this was what had come out for $60 at launch. Instead, this is $40 more.

Pros: While few pros, the gun play is fun and the story is improved (although a lot of that is just fixed from the original release), and...that's it. Basically you pay them to fix what should have been patched for free and the game only now feels even close to what they announced when people pre-ordered. Good only if you never played Destiny before and you get the legendary edition with all the content included for $60.

Cons: The majority of Destiny and the fact that this is a $40 paywall to get the content the game originally came with. No more pvp, vendors are useless, and you're locked from the later story without the expansion because you can't level high enough.

It's amazing but to actually know the story you have to go online and read it on the website. The game doesn't do it any justice at all what so ever. Which is extremely disappointing.

    Multiplayer:
This gets its own category because the game is centered around it. The multiplayer makes me revisit the game every week for more. What destiny does in this regard is bring people together by forcing them to play online with each other and force people to actually communicate. The only other game that can accomplish this much of a player interaction is WOW and other MMOs of the sort. This is a beauty, I have had the best team experiences in this game than any other. This only should be a reason why you consider the game at all.

    Graphics:
It looks amazing the set pieces feel other worldly. The enemy designs are really cool and it feels different to fight each one.

    Game play:
Guns feel good the controls are flawless. all good here.

    Level Design:
This is another area where the game falls short and prevents it from being a 9. The levels such as the raids are beautifully crafted. Other than that all the other levels are missing key elements. The new taken strikes have a little more volume and content but not enough to keep it interesting for the hours one would have to grind to get the armor and weapons you would need to actually do the raid.

Is taken king worth 60? It honestly depends on your interests. If your looking for a game to distract you and kill time with it is worth is it has no depth but it is really fun to shoot things. Also if your in the mood its amazing to work with a team and come together. If your in for an experience then don't buy it, like I said there is no depth to it.

We should at least be able to infuse all our old weapons. I do not agree with the nerfs to Black Hammer either. The exotic version of Black hammer still has the nerfed White Nail perk rather than the original where you had infinite ammo. Let me make this clear --- I DISLIKED YEAR ONE... after everything got repetitive and the PVP was just moving from one OP weapon to another after patches. I talked **** i thought this game was over.... But with TTK i truly believe that Bungie has learned its lesson and listened to its players in the forums, twitter, etc.

I am actually VERY overwhelmed with how much stuff there is to do currently in TTK. Story, strikes, RAID!, new dreadnought area, new enemies, new patrol, tons of new quests(weapon/gear/hidden), new pvp game modes(not a big fan of some) more space in storage, being able to move gear with Destiny App(actually this is old but a great feature), new bounties which are much more fun in my opinion to complete and can be handed in without going to tower... and more, which i just can't remember off the top of my head.

What i really wanted to do in this review is address the haters and all these negative reviews.

Haters, haters, haters... I have a few on my Xbox friends list and in WhatsApp talking trash all day about TTK... vowed not to get the game after they played the first one... but guess what, i can see them online and playing.

    1. lets look at the review dates... in the first few days, the haters came out and started hating on the game (just look at the dates... the raid didnt even come out yet... no1 completed the NF/heroic) and didnt even play it. As you look further away from Sept. 15th, you can see more honest reviews from people who actually took the time and played the game and did not just post some hate because they had their opinions predetermined by year 1. It is clear as day to me that most of these reviewers are still just upset from year one and have not given this game a chance.

    2. The actual critics who get paid for this, and do not determine the score of the game on their past feelings, rated the game a success. Look at the PSN review of TTK,

    Critic ratings:
    Positive: 32 out of 33
    Mixed: 1 out of 33
    Negative: 0

    3. Also, check out the profiles of most of the negative reviewers... they only came on to hate on this game.

I put it this way to a friend of mine, i would pay $150 for what the game is today. Year one was just a long beta that cost me $60. The bugs and issues were mostly addressed and the actual proper game is now fully out.

If you have never played Destiny and like FPS where you can run with friends, do missions, play pvp, etc... this game will provide you with hours, days, weeks and even months of entertainment.

The only reason i took off a point is because the game is not perfect... there are still a few things in my opinion which i would like addressed. I'm only listing the few negatives with hopes that Bungie is listening here as well.
    - i want to be able to pick up bounties/quests/buy gear from the phone app
    - i want a PVP play list without supers and/or heavy weapons.
    - can we have a private PVP match option?

Worth a buy if you don't have the game at all and certainly worth it if you have the content that was already released.

Same poor excuse of content that Bungie have been putting as little effort into as possible for the past 2 years just rehashed once more.

Same bad gameplay, no new features.

There aren't enough strikes to do,there's literally 4-6 in total and they're level based. So really you only have 2 realistically available at one time and they're repetitive,a trend throughout the game.
Raids are extremely long and I only ever managed once to assemble a team,in my opinion they need a matchmaker for raids.
PVP is where I had the most fun,its actually fairly balanced and works.
The RNG in this game is terrible, from the ingrams to the loot you get after strikes is dependent on a number generator,Why?Reasons.

Overall this game just leaves a lot to be desired, which will probably be filled with stripped DLC that activision demanded.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was an interesting set of DLC, investigating and fighting against the Taken in an eventually successful attempt to take down Oryx.

I was a fan of the invisible platform mechanics seen in this DLC, as well as enemy variance and general story. However, the final boss, Oryx himself, was a laughable joke and incredibly unchallenging in that I was under-levelled for the fight, yet still managed to defeat Oryx without taking any red health damage. It was possibly one of the most predictable boss fight patterns Destiny has ever given us, and it kind of left a sour taste in my mouth.

Sorry, Bungie. Your great DLC was tarnished by an incredibly underwhelming final challenge that left me delaying my purchase of Rise of Iron until the hour before launch.

Destiny: The Taken King is a great piece of content. Now reading that and looking at the score might have you scratching your head, but the quality of the content on offer isn't the main problem with The Taken King. Rather, it is the precedent that has been established in the modern gaming industry that it's okay to release an incomplete title and slowly build on it over a period of time, charging fares all the way.

That feeling of knowing you've purchased a complete game that you can play and revisit whenever you like has been diminished as the age of digital preorders has dawned over the industry. Pardon the cynicism, but it's hard to get excited for any well marketed AAA release when the fear of an incoming swindle is always present.

While The Taken King improves the base game significantly while adding content of its own, it's hard to see these changes as reactive more than pre-ordained from the start - the presence of the Dreadnought environment which was seen briefly in pre-release videos from Destiny before its release justifies the existence of both Crota and Oryx in the base game. Given the recent illumination of some of Bungie's in-house politics regarding Destiny, it's hard to see Bungie with more than a feeling of disdain since they entered a partnership with Activision.

Deadlines are just a necessary evil in the games industry, especially while under the scrutiny of a megapublisher like Activision. While I'm glad Bungie is on the right track with Destiny, it's clear that even The Taken King wasn't quite ready to be shipped, with a number of problems and bugs still present in many aspects of the base game, and within the expansion content. What's more is that The Taken King is a measure of planned obsolescence for base game materials. For those without the expansion, some of the base game content is actually locked out. While you can argue that this signifies that the game has evolved from its base form, and players should adapt, it seems unfair to take content away from players who consider this downloadable content optional.

And that's the thing: The Taken King is not an optional expansion. In order to continue enjoying Destiny, even if it means doing only everything you did before, you need to buy in. All of these problems could have been rectified with a unified release of the game from the beginning, instead of now. Players new to Destiny will have a wealth of content to get through, but there's no denying what a slap in the face Destiny year one was to day one players, punctuated by the release of The Taken King.

Destiny: The Taken King is just bad, like the original Destiny. It is an excuse for more future DLC, it is forced upon consumers, and it brings nothing of note to the game. With a fixed loot system and an unfair level system still alive, Destiny is going from bad to worse. This was a game with a 500 Million$ budget that was known for having repetitive content and having the biggest budget of any game ever, effectively surpassing At World's End's 295 Million Dollars in advertising, props, animation and etc. etc. Everything in this game that is actually worthwhile doing besides the Vault of Glass are all DLC exclusive content. Players who haven't purchased the Taken King DLC can't lol up from 34, and therefor missing out on the new subclasses introduced in the trailers, as you unlock them when you reach level 35. Trials of Osiris, raids, weekly night falls, DLC bounties and the crucible are all the activities actually worthwhile doing compared to farming strikes over and over, hoping to receive a legendary, or even an exotic. The flaws of the game are that it gives you all the basic content on the spot and asks you for more pocket money in exchange for more content. Having activision as a sales representative wasn't a good idea after all. All that's left in between are the patrols, campaign and farming for either Xur or the factions. The graphics stayed the same in style, with beautiful architecture and originality. The plot line feels like an unfinished book, with DLC being used as the replacement pages. The main story typically consists of either boss battles or horde mode missions. Emotes are friggin useless and literally just take 5$ extra out of your bank account to buy the remaining silver required to buy a legendary emote. Stuff from Xur is mostly for DLC players, as the weapons are for lvl 40's. Overall, a game that never reached it's full potential and instead had to now scramble for farming, grinding, random events, horde mode, repetitive activities and when it is not doing that, gives you **** like raids that require at least two friends since you have no matchmaking, night falls, which are normal strikes on steroids and farming crucible for lord shaxx so that he can give you that fatebringer that you always wanted. Thoroughly disappointed for this being a Bungie game. Expand

While the taken king still can't offer a good campaign as promised, the taken king still improves over somethings like the new mission design and levels, cool new add-ons to the gameplay, and the fact that they actually try to have a story here is a plus for this expansion.

I used to love Destiny as it was fun and exciting even challenging. Now with the ignorant expansion and all the changes 1. Year 1 gear/guns = worthless. 2. raid guns worthless. 3. Same old crap different flavor. 4. Take away one of the best additions (SRL). 4. Reward system is total crap.

Now let's move onto the PvP portion. I have never seen a worse game to play pvp since gaming

Now let's move onto the PvP portion. I have never seen a worse game to play pvp since gaming was invented. p2p connectivity is totally **** up. Players lagging into walls, not taking damage, can't kill them, snipers that NEVER miss even though they are getting plastered with bullets, characters blinking only to shoot you with sheer perfection while in mid air.... Trials is possibly the worst of the worst. Since this is a peer to peer connection it is inevitable that during the required 7 games (with boons) you must win for lighthouse you are going to run into the lagging, cannot kill, bullets seem to be made out of cotton, of course they are incredible 2 shot you with any gun any where on the map. Sniping you headshot EVERY time even though you hit them first.... Before you think I am full of **** I have been flawless several times (how I have no idea). I have been 7-0 or 8-0 at least 100 times then run into the above type teams usually from mexico or uk that no matter what seem to be wearing bullet proof vest and carrying 2 shot kill weapons each match. Try as you may there is no killing them. Doctrine of Passing (which of course they nerfed to not piss off mida and last word users) usually takes about half a clip to kill someone if you are decent but when facing above team 2 doctrine's empty clips into the same player and you MIGHT get his initial health bar off but kill him hell NO....
Then there is regular crucible or Iron Banner which is basically the same thing as trials with all the damn lag oh but wait there are now 6 guys you cannot kill but 2 shot you. Wait for it.... Get on the right side of the connection now you have become the beast you thought you were killing everyone and wrecking it. Don't get excited you are just on the lag team and next match your mida, pdx45, sniper, DoP well they just caught a case of cotton rounds.
Play pvp long enough and you will be just like me unless of course you are one of the lucky ones that always seem to be on that side of the connection or fortunate enough to not get stuck in a foreign lobby. **** bungie sitting in their test lab saying its all good. Oh the damage referee is dead but more likely they lied to us again it never existed. If so then why did I just shoot this warlock 4 times with an invective, melee him 5 times and stick a grenade to him while he is walking into a wall or even better magically appear behind you and 1 or 2 shot you... I will NEVER play pvp again, they have progressively made it worse and worse and worse and worse...

It's a fun game for the first third or so of its playtime, but then it gets extremely stale really fast.
