I only bought this Call of Duty for the Zombies as I've just given up on the hope that anything different might come from the Multiplayer or Campaign than from previous titles. Been a while since I wrote a review on a CoD game. My favorite CoD were COD4, MW2, and BO1...everything else to me was garbage. So why the 8 rating on BLOPS 3??

This is the first well balanced CoD game (imo) since MW2. The weapons are all functional with no bad weapons. The kill streaks are balanced and toned down, as are weapon attachments. Lots a small tweaks like the removal of the n00b tube and ditching crutch perks like Toughness or Juggernaut. So mechanically it plays like a GOOD Call of Duty.

Now the changes. It is pretty, but it is still the Quake engine from 1998, age is still showing in comparison with say Rainbow Six Siege or Halo 5. But the art direction is enjoyable, as are the new gameplay features. Wall running is ripped straight from Titanfall, but is functional and it actually has purpose in the maps. The jet packs are WAAAAY toned down compared to Advanced Warfare, which felt like a bunch of Toddlers high on Crack zipping around everywhere on poorly designed maps. Seriously AW was a crap fest and the jet packs were too jarring to use. Now it is fluid and gradual with very limited use; again balanced. Specialists are many and fun adding a little character to your soldier loadout. None of the specialist abilities are overpowered and they do not break the game as they are easily stopped by other players or have situational functionality. They are not "I WIN" buttons! Map design is fantastic, not memorable with the exception of a couple maps, but well designed with classic lanes of control taken from earlier CoD games, so that is a plus.

Content is important too...I will give some credit here big time. The game is pushing DLC, but it feels the DLC is developed outside of the game cycle, proper DLC and not cut. BLOPS 3 is FRONT LOADED with tons of content. Two single player campaigns, Nightmare mode, full coop zombie campaign, full multiplayer suite with TONS of customization by including the paintshop and gunsmithing. Battlefront and EA could learn from this.

Now the negative: It is CoD, nothing new or ground breaking. For me (a person who sat out every CoD since BLOPS 1, tried AW and dropped it; I was franchise fatigued) this was refreshing to jump back into. A solid CoD title that to me brought back some high points of multiplayer fun that I remember having in MW2.

    * Solid gameplay mechanics and sound/music, nothing wrong in that department.

    Cons:

    * Horrible campaign, not only does it stop following the previous black ops storyline but it's a bland military shooter at best. Bland main character, bad voice acting, messy storytelling.

    * Nightmare mode. Sure they didn't have to add this in in the first place, but everyone sure would rather they had put that effort into the campaign before creating this steaming pile of **** What is nightmare mode? After you beat the main story you will unlock this mode, it's the campaign mission again, but the human enemies are replaced with zombies and there's a new storyline, only it's just audio written over the old cutscenes. Lazy and unnecessary.

    * Microtransactions. It was bound to happen eventually, but they added microtransactions to the game called "cod points" also known as CP. These can be used to buy the new liquid divinium in zombies or items in multiplayer, which both effect gameplay!

Final Verdict: Buy this game on sale for the zombies or multiplayer if you're into them, if you're just getting it for the campaign, don't buy this.

"Call of Duty: Black Ops III" is the biggest game in the series, if not the best. In fact, it's nowhere near being the best and fans of the previous BLOPS will be disappointed that it isn't a conclusion to the Alex Mason story. This third "Black Ops" game doesn't resemble its Cold War-set predecessors or even"Call of Duty: Black Ops III" is the biggest game in the series, if not the best. In fact, it's nowhere near being the best and fans of the previous BLOPS will be disappointed that it isn't a conclusion to the Alex Mason story. It is, however, loaded to the gills with plenty of content and most of it is fun. This third "Black Ops" game doesn't resemble its Cold War-set predecessors or even the Michael Bay-influenced "Modern Warfare" games. Instead, it is a bleak and violent cyberpunk adventure that blends elements of "Ghost In the Shell" with "Deux Ex" and "Metal Gear Solid 4". Adult anime is an obvious influence.

Story-wise, this is a flash forward to the dark future hinted in "Black Ops II". With a convoluted story and a bizarre ending, "Black Ops III" is the "Bioshock Infinite" of the franchise except without the subtlety. Graphically violent and dark to the extreme, the campaign of will be remembered for its ambitions, if not for its storytelling. I also noticed that memorable scripted events are scarce in this latest entry. The franchise's trademark of Hollywood-like setpieces is still present, but you'll most likely remember the endless shootouts with drones and robots. It can get a little boring, even with fellow players. The campaign can be played with four others, but it is easily one of Treyarch's worst despite the addition of "Bioshock"-like powers.

While the story mode is distinguished with its graphic content and future setting, the multiplayer stays true to the COD online formula with a few changes. Call it the "Destiny" influence, but Activision seems to have placed some elements of their newest IP into "Black Ops III". Multiplayer now includes 8 different classes of soldiers each with their own special attacks and abilities. Also, you can now purchase chests from a "Gunsmith" with "Cryptocoins" (a form of currency earned). These chests include Common and Rare weapons, skins, attachments and various goodies. Of course, Treyarch's "Zombies" has returned and is now spread into three different modes; "Shadow of Evil" (an evolution of past Zombie maps), "Dead Ops II" (a retro 2D shooter) and "Nightmare" (a remixed campaign featuring zombies). Treyarch has also included a few "Mirror's Edge"-inspired race challenges and a combat training arena that recalls the VR missions from "Metal Gear Solid".

Overall, "Black Ops III" is a monster when it comes to content. It's an even more ambitious game than the surprisingly good "Advanced Warfare". But with a bad narrative, an okay campaign and a pointless split-screen option (the graphics resemble a PS3 game), it's not as good as it could've been. However, multiplayer is still strong, "Shadow of Evil" is a blast to figure out and "Nightmares" (while not perfect) is fun to play. I'd rank this latest COD with an 8.5 out of 10.

First off, if you've rated this game lower than COD: Ghosts or COD: Advanced Warfare (also known as Call of House of Cards), remove your rating immediately, because you're doing anyone sane who doesn't already own the game a disservice.

There is no facet of the game in which BLOPS III is not superior to the other Call of Duties in the current rotational cycle, both because of what it has and what it doesn't have.

    What it has:

    1. An intriguing, lengthy and outside the box campaign. This is something Black Ops developers and writers are probably not used to, and for a first effort at such a frankly-Inception like story it is very intriguing. While this is possibly the only area in which AW competes with BLOPS III, and who doesn't like Kevin Spacey these days, the AW story became far too predictable and literally a House of Cards rip-off, so BLOPS III still wins.

    2. Nuketown. 'Nuff Said

    3. Local online multiplayer. Seriously people, look at the lobbies. At least 10-20% are (1). And the only reason it's that low is because people pay for Gold to be able to track their stats. Console gaming will ALWAYS be community-focused. So stop demanding split-screen go away, and code it better.

    4. Zombies, and a cool premise for it with the Noir theme at that.

    5. Free Run

    6. Intelligent map design, considering the game mechanics.

Perhaps more importantly, what it doesn't have:

    1. "LOOK AT ME TURBOBOOST DASH AVOID HEHEHEHEHE." Look kiddies, if you want to play a game that is completely unrealistic, play Halo or Titanfall. Getting rid of the thrust and Exo **** from AW was essential. Treyarch was completely right to ignore it. Call of Duty is a different style of game. We don't need vertical maps. We don't need jetpacks. Good, quality ground warfare is what a CoD should pride itself on achieving. I don't even hate the wallrunning. I'm not a fan of the dash slide, simply because aiming a gun successfully while doing that motion is nonsensical. But it's still much more rooted in the purpose and style of the game than AW was. We don't need Halo, Earth Edition.

    2. The nonsensical item system that was Ghosts. They tried to change up the mechanics. It failed. Hard. Pick 10, a Treyarch development, is the way to go, and it has been good.

    3. A development house who succumbed to the "local multiplayer is dead" fools. Rock Band just came back for christ sake people. Do you think people are playing that by themselves?

Why do people continue to defend this game series every year? The Call of Duty franchise has drifted out into realms that it just wasn't created for. the game has gone from one of the all time greatest World War 2 simulation games in 2003 to a mess of "modern" game mechanics that just DO NOT FIT. Why bring "boost jumping" and robots into a franchise known for its war scenarios?

I can understand the decision from a developers point of view, seeing the success of other games in the shooter genre such as Halo and Destiny but this does not mean one has to jump on the bandwagon and rip off every other game just to get a slice of the action. We have a "sci-fi" shooter in Halo, we have a "class based" shooter in Destiny and a "futuristic" shooter in Titanfall. We currently have no modern war games of this generation anymore cause every developer just wants to copy what has been successful for other franchises. IT JUST DOES NOT WORK. Let other developers work on what their games are good for and stick to your own. You wouldn't put peanut butter and jelly on a steak dinner would you?

About the game play: Campaign is... Campaign... Is there a campaign? An awful story about robot invasion and humans being turned into cybermorphs? THIS IS NOT A GOOD STORY ARCH. Movies have tried it and most are absolutely terrible. We don't want this s**t in a war game.
Zombies is just another lazy attempt at a survival based game. Sure, it is fun, for a bout 10 minutes, until you understand the maps and what is required. Then its just tedious repeating the same thing over and over.
So, multiplayer. The reason people buy Call of Duty. Is it good? Absolutely not. The arsenal of weapon available for multiplayer is about as unbalanced as it gets. Do the stats shown actually mean anything? An SMG with 3 points in damage, 6 in accuracy and 4 in fire rate is a better choice than an assault rifle with 8, 10 and 6 respectively. Won't even mention shotguns. That's an article in itself.
The classes are probably the only thing that is done well in this game but to be honest, it isn't hard to get that achievement. Replacing many perks from the previous Call of Duty games and abilities from other games can make a nice change but do they belong in a Call of Duty game? No. A bow with explosive arrows.. Hello Gears of Wars Torque Bow. Slam into the ground with a shockwave.. Hello Destinys Titan. Hell, there's even a class that looks EXACTLY like the titan from Destiny... Become invisible for a brief moment.. Hello Destinys Hunter... Boost jump, Hello Halo and Destiny... Sliding and wall running.. Hello Titanfall. The flamethrower is probably the most unique class and weapon in the list.
To top off this mess of a game this time of year is all the little kiddies that now plague the game. Does this belong in a game review? Probably not but it a topic that comes up a lot with modern games. The game is certified 18 for a reason. Yet for Christmas, parents feel to need to go out and buy their loved little ones this "violent" game. The the lobbies get plagued with pre-pubescent kids talking s**t.

A single review isn't going to make but really, why do these games do so well. It is obvious that a majority of players hate the way this franchise is going, yet they still release s**t game after s**t game. Why? It's easy money for them. Stick "Call of Duty" in front of a dead fly and people will buy it

Perhaps if the campaign had forced you to learn them/use them as you progressed I would've been more comfortable using them and enjoyed them more.

I put a serious amount of hours into the multiplayer and prestiged. It is a solid multiplayer offering for the series if you don't mind the new style of CoD where everybody is flying through the air like monkeys because of the jetpacks. There is plenty of variety of game modes etc to keep people busy and coming back for more.

The CoD series is at its best when it builds the world and sets the scene with patience and discipline. In MW1 you sneak through the forest and crest the hill just to see the nukes launch, headed for the U.S. and suddenly the race is on. In MW2 you trudge through the sewers of a gulag and breach the walls to come head to head with your old friend Capt Price.

BO3 has none of that nuance, and Activision has convinced itself that what the game needs is more bad guys and bigger spectacles. Between hordes of stupid AI enemies, drones, and bionic spells, it's impossible to figure out what BO3 is going for. In the original CoD you fought off Nazis from the back of a truck with a 0.50 cal, in BO3 you fight off advanced assault mechs from...the back of a truck, with a 0.50 cal. The plot is convoluted and the multiplayer is Titanfall lite.

Modern Warfare embodied the spirit of its villain Makarov, who uttered "It doesn't take the most powerful nations on Earth to create the next global conflict. Just the will of a single man." as the game pitted you as a rifleman in the midst of vast chaos. BO3 on the other hand, thinks that the will of a single man is nowhere near enough, and instead requires a vast arsenal of useless gizmos and gadgets to get anything done. The result is a bloated mess that gets in the way of a series that once had such great storytelling.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III was a game I was very excited before the release because everything in BO2 was great, but unfortunately was not what happened in that game. The story has no connection with the BO2, but at least it is Ok. The gameplay in the campaign is very simple, with nothing remarkable or different. Call of Duty: Black Ops III could be one of the best CoD, but uninteresting campaign, and the leg of the game will not let that happen, at least the zombies mode is incredible. 7/10 Expand

Game is pretty solid for Game play, Zombies is much much better than Black Ops II. Multiplayer has gone back to basics and is more solid than the past 2 Call of Duty Titles. Would recommend buying if you like Call of duty Multiplayer.

I actually had low expectations for this game when it was announced, but after hours of gameplay i realize that it's actually a great new installment in the Call of Duty series. In my opinion it is even better than Advanced Warfare. The only thing I didn't like in this game was the limitation of party games. In Black Ops 2 we had One in the Chamber, Sticks and Stones, Sharpshooter, and Gun Game, yet Gun Game was the only available game mode out of the 4 amazing party game modes. If they could add more party games, then this would probably be tied with Black Ops 2 as my favorite Call of Duty game. Expand

A great game despite its flaws. The campaign could be more but still manages to be a great experience if you look past the first few missions. Multiplayer is a blast and makes up for the inadequacies found in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. If you're a fan of Call of Duty, this will appeal to you. While the formula doesn't take risks, it still works.

If you play CoD for the campaign, Black Ops III is a low point featuring a confusing and uninteresting story, poor pacing, cheesy dialogue and over-the-top voice acting that results in a story that resembles what the outcome would be if you dropped the cast of Team America: World Police on the set of Inception or Source Code.

Treyarch may not always hit its targets, but this remains a genuinely fresh take on an old sub-series in an even older franchise. A game as well-oiled as its cyborgian characters. [Christmas 2015, p.60]
