On a very general basis this game incorporates some of the most basic components of the other battlefields but in terms of the actual gameplay it's completely different. The game itself feels more like a hybrid between an upgraded Counter-Strike and one of the better Call of Duty's.

The map size's are rather small making the gameplay feel a little bit claustrophobic at times. However, the size favours fast-paced killing that both CoD and CS players will enjoy. Regardless of small maps vehicle choice is still present although limited in quantity and quality. The majority of vehicles feel pointless accessories that make you an easy target and don't really add much to the game. Weapon choice is definitely scarce and doesn't match at all the diversity found in the previous versions.

From the graphical point of view this game is a real bummer. From the quality of the maps to the development of the gameplay it feels like EA once again went lazy. It is understandable that developing a game is not exactly easy and cheap but when you look at the companies annual income seeing an improvement is more of a demand than an expectation.

One of the more positive notes for this game is the Single player campaign. The vintage cop plot was a smart move from the developers as its concept gave us gamers some fresh air to breathe over other overly simplistic and boring game stories that we get to see each year.

The game is definitely fun to play but will most likely not have the same lasting appeal as the other Battlefields. Charging this game full price is a little bit ridiculous mainly because it really doesn't play like a next-gen game. Personally, I would have preferred EA to distribute this game as a DLC for BF4 with a significantly lower price tag. However, lets not forget that this is EA, the usual Money over Customers ideology.

I was skeptical but, being the Battlefield loyalist that I am, decided to give Hardline a shot. As expected and to my total, but unsurprising, disappointment, Battlefield Hardline is garbage - corny, uncreative, and an insult to the BF community.

Forget intelligent teamwork, vehicle warfare, and overall strategic warfare. Those wanting the battlefield experience, stick with BF3 and 4, or any other priors of the series. Those wanting to play a new Call of Duty and mindlessly run and gun, you might like Hardline.

The biggest issue I have is with the vehicles Hardline offers. To me, what set battlefield apart was the MASSIVE maps and the vehicle warfare. No more Jets, useful choppers, tanks or other armored vehicles. The choppers are slow, unrealistic, and pretty much useless other than for being a spawn beacon. The vehicle physics as a whole are laughable and beyond unrealistic - they seem to have no "weight" or mass with unrealistic acceleration and handling. They remind me of the p*ss poor physics you shortly experience in the Call of Duty games - who don't give a flip about vehicles in the first place.

The game should be titled "Call of Duty: Counter-Strike SP (sub-par)" - this is what it was developed (copied) and sold as.

    -------------(Further soapbox ranting below):-------------------
According to all of the pre-launch marketing/advertising bs, the idea was to take a new and creative direction with the Battlefield series while maintaining the series' "core" or "essence". Well, if that truly was the goal then you, EA, failed miserably. My guess is that EA only wanted or cared about the cheap shortcut to "success". To copy an already successful model(activision), target and cater to the mainstream (COD) audience, and just make sure there are no bugs. It's all about the numbers, get as many pre-orders as you can and tap into the COD audience as much as possible.

Battlefield to me has never really been for the majority as it is accurate, realistic, and difficult to many. I do not deny that many players probably like or even love this game because they are COD fanboys. But if you actually are a Battlefield fan and player, you do not.

The only reason I'm giving this a 3 rating is because I have not seen any major bugs or glitches.... so it's good in that it works - congrats.

My personal favorite being hotwire, which is basically conquest but the points are vehicles you need to capture and drive. To answer the question, Yes... it is different than standard battlefield, it has more of an arcadey feel to it. But its not a bad thing. While I have noticed a few bugs on launch, audio and graphical glitches, the game is very stable and an absolute blast. I highly recommend it. Expand

    Review of multiplayer:

I was on the fence about BF:Hardline due to the mixed reviews, but went for it after reading a few that said it was a more infantry focused Battlefield, and small infantry only maps are pretty much all I play in Battlefield 4, my favorite map being Operation Locker. I was hoping hardline would have more maps like that, but unfortunately in Hardline even the smaller ones seem way too chaotic. More so even than COD:A!

There is very little tactical gameplay in Hardline, and I'm not even talking about utilizing specialties and teamwork; I mean just navigating the map - everyone's kind of everywhere - utilizing the environment is often meaningless because you have no sense of where the enemy might be coming from for more than a few moments. I find myself making a lot of lucky kills by spawning literally right behind enemies, and getting frustrated when the same happens to me.

I would be shocked if the death toll in this game weren't way higher than average shooters, and hey, that's okay, I'm not looking for deep strategy, but sadly, this feels even more shallow than COD:AW because ultimately the chaos feels... random. Random deaths, random kills. And the wait time to re-spawn is frustratingly long for this kind of game.

It's not awful; as many others have said it feels kind of like an expansion pack (albeit a major one) for BF4, but I think Operation Locker and every map in COD:AW does this kind of gameplay better. I actually think PayDay 2 also does it better, even though the enemies are always AI. At least the scale and scope of the battles in PD2 kind of work to support the cops & robbers theme. Put it this way - if you're looking for multiplayer shooter version of Heat, Payday does it better, even with it's AI cops. And for full on multiplayer, Operation Locker in Battlefield 4 doesn't have the theme, but feels way more immersive and tactical.

Okay, so those are my criticisms: onto the good stuff:

I don't get people's gripes with the graphics - they seem to be the same quality as BF4. Maybe it's because I had read about Hardline and knew it would use the same engine, so I wasn't expecting any better, but it certainly doesn't seem worse. I think the graphics are good, definitely stomps anything on last gen.

The stuff the cops and robbers shout out is more fun than BF4, especially the robbers (obviously.) In fact, it's the verbal cues more than anything that make you feel like it's a crime thing rather than a war thing. And the criminals are bad-asses, so playing as one is pretty cool.

The hit detection shows you which body part was struck when you died. For all I know, it just picks a random body part because... how would you know? One second you're standing there, next you're dead.. which brings me back to my original criticism, most of the time you never see it coming. Still, I'm giving the game the benefit of the doubt and saying the hit detection is better.

The maps that have you stealing money from a vault have a cool mechanism; basically, in the middle of a battle you can stuff money in your pockets, but it leaves you totally vulnerable. The longer you stand there at the vault, the more money you get, but the bigger risk you take. It's can be cool and thrilling, but again, my criticism from earlier still dampens the coolness factor since it basically just seems like random chance whether you'll survive at any point.

It's pretty disappointing that all the negative reviews I'd been reading actually led me to think this game might be just what I was looking for - I guess you could say my grail game would be a half-step up in tactical gameplay than COD, but Hardline feels, oddly enough, even more chaotic, and not in a good way. Again, it's not awful, but unless they come out with better balanced maps in the future I probably won't stick with it for long.

I have no thoughts on single player, since I have no interest in it.

Battlefield Hardline proves that replacing the franchise landmarks (large maps, wide array of vehicles and weapons) for a narrow, twitch-gameplay, cops and robbers experience is as dumb as it sounds. Luckily the wait for Star Wars Battlefront shouldn't be long now and this miscarriage of the EA-Money Machine can hopefully soon be forgotten.

Battlefield 4 despite its rough start, was a good game in the end, This takes BF4, adds an terrible user interface, awful looking and handling vehicles, removes most of the weapons, and unbalances the classes. The multiplayer is like a double-edged sword. On one side you got all the refreshing approach by having new game modes, features, and gadgets. On the other hand, you got limited weapons that takes way too long to earn, cops/crooks restricted weapons, OP armored vehicles, and terrible balancing issue on Hardcore mode. The multiplayer is pretty damn fun. Though Hotwire can get boring if you are simply driving in circles, trying to destroy the enemy vehicles or keeping your teams car alive, makes it a decent new game type. I nearly squealed with glee the first time I planted 2 Lazer Tripmines under a car, and waited for a poor enemy player to hop in, only to explode a split second after hitting the gas.

Rescue is a decent attempt to capture the CS:GO community but I'm not sure if the BF community can grasp it. The old faithful Conquest is decent and the "levolution" is okay. It seems that some of the maps could use a bit more love but overall, they each give something the others don't.

The Weapons are pretty decent. I haven't really gone up against any weapons that have seemed just stupidly OP. There are some that are overall stronger than others but each seems to at least fill its own niche. The Guns don't sound like Pop-Rocks.
