While Hardline certainly isn’t your standard Battlefield experience, the changes and tweaks present here are welcome additions, breathing new life into the franchise that’ll entice both veteran and new players alike.

While Hardline isn’t the Battlefield you may be used to it offers a unique approach that will surely please fans of the genre. The campaign is a big step up from previous entries and while the multiplayer anarchy has been trimmed down, the gameplay in its place is more tactical and intimate.

An engaging narrative, beautiful visuals, varied gameplay, and top-notch multiplayer (that works well) all fit together to deliver one of the biggest and best experiences to be had this year thus far.

Hardline might not reinvent the wheel the series rolls on, but it certainly makes it spin a whole lot smoother. Speeded up gameplay, an opened-up single-player, and a robust suite of new multiplayer modes lends itself to the best Battlefield to date—though that’s not saying much, a decade later.

A passable and unspectacular campaign is unlikely to win any new fans, but Hardline's fresh take on Battlefield multiplayer makes it worth a shot. [Issue#256, p.68]

Multiplayer is, of course, the main reason that you buy into a Battlefield game, and it's generally enjoyable, even if it doesn't do anything to revolutionise the genre. However, both Activision and EA, and every other FPS developer that aspires to become the top dog franchise, needs to learn that if they are going to persist in putting single player narratives into their games, then they need to do a far better job.

We can see in its lack of substance a reflection of a disturbing social complacency when it comes to exploring complicated issues like police violence and systemic racism. We can also recognize what little faith it has in its players to wrestle with difficult concepts, to find something meaningful and troubling behind using a digital badge and police-issued firearm in equal measure to solve our crime problems.

This is way better then COD advance warfare. What are you guys expecting? The story is amazing, the online play is great. The graphics are pretty cool for a shooter game. Probably one of the very few games that was worth the pick up at midnight. Don't listen to the bad reviews if you see they are going off a beta. Anyone that's play the full game will give it a honey rating between 8-10. If you know battlefield history this is by far the best one and a great change. It's a little GTA with Payday mix in. Great team game. The story is pretty fun. Great game go pick it up and you won't be mad. Great things always have the biggest haters remember that. And enjoy and look me up on ps4. Expand

Let's get single player out of the way first. It's fine. The story is pretty generic. If you've seen one cop drama, you've seen them all. The characters are kinda mehhhhhhhh, but they're voice acted brilliantly. What I love about the single player is that, for the most part, it's a stealth game. It almost feels like all enemy encounters start like Far Cry outpost missions. It has nonsensical, over-the-top action sequences that, for a cop game, don't make much sense, but I don't think they hurt the game for being there. In many of the levels, you can progress through it your way, finding different routes to sneak through and collect evidence for your "investigations." They're just basically a collectables achievement. Campaign is fine. Miles ahead of BF3 and BF4, but not fantastic.
Multiplayer is good, for the most part. It's extremely stables (I've had only one crash and a handful of disconnects, and that was mainly on the first day it came out). It runs smoothly at a good, stable frame rate, looks quite pretty, and sounds amazing. From a technical standpoint, it's one of the best battlefields. The new theme game modes, Heist and Bloodmoney, are great on most maps. Hotwire is ridiculous. It makes the progression system silly and pointless. It's a ton of fun and can be extremely tactical when people aren't exploiting the design flaws, but that's only 20% of the time. Most of the time, enemies and teammates alike grab the objective vehicles and drive around in circles in the back of the map. Is it a good way to get money? Hell yeah. Is it a good way to have fun. Absolutely not. They're going to have to fix the scoring system in Hotwire. TDM is a joke because there is literally no spawn system. It doesn't spawn each team on opposite sides, it doesn't let you spawn on teammates, it just spawns you randomly around the map, and most of the time you'll spawn directly into an enemy's field of view. Not some of the time. MOST of the time.
Weapon balance is atrocious. There might as well be only 3 guns in the game, (M416, M16, and K10). Nobody uses anything else because you're stupid not to.
Most of the problems with the game should be easily fixable. So if you're on the fence, wait a month or two until they patch the game into a better balanced state. If you love Battlefield, though, you should enjoy this one.

If you are going take a well establish series and branch it out into other genres, make an effort. At least the character models look nice.

The biggest disappointment of this cops and robbers game is that it has very little cops and robbers. You never knock down doors and toss flash bangs. You never ambush crooks. You can forget about questioning anyone. There is very little actual police work in this game. Instead, you take out enemies stealthily like Metal Gear Solid or gun them down like any other Battlefield game. At one point, the game goes completely off the rails and you drive around a tank taking out helicopter gunships.

Some effort was put into this game. You have gorgeous character models that probably put competing games to shame in early 2015. Back then, most games released for Xbox 360 and PS3 looked very much last gen on the current gen consoles. Not this one. Cut scenes in Hardline are also well done and show an overconfidence in the actual gameplay. Weapons are straight up Battlefield weapons except cops get Tasers. The maps and areas are nicely done, with a few set pieces that are worthy of a Call of Duty. Ugh, imagine Call of Duty: Cops. That's really what this game is, complete with moments where the player character is knocked unconscious by explosions.

I cannot stress enough how much this game is a missed opportunity. Or maybe cops really do crouch walk around gang hideouts methodically taking out enemies with stealth attacks and disabling alarms. Perhaps my whole notion of police work is a lie.

In regards to multi-player, I can report that it exists and people are still playing it. I matched into a game within a minute and spawned into the gun turret of an armored vehicle for a few cheap kills. Then I spawned in the middle of a firefight and was killed by an unseen enemy wielding an assault rifle. Welcome to the Battlefield soldier. I honestly cannot understand why anyone would play Hardline when they could play Battlefield 4. Both were sold for $5 during the same PSN sale (which is how I picked up Hardline) and yet only one is a real Battlefield game.

One final note. The menu music is Godawful terrible and you have to hear it while matchmaking. Why EA, why?!?
