Well, not entirely... One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders. And life is not easy for the Roman legionaries who garrison the fortified camps of Totorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Compendium. Peace reigns in the small Armorican village, where the villagers go about their daily business. Our two heroes, Asterix and Obelix, hunt wild boar, the blacksmith and the fishmonger quarrel, and the village chief strolls around the village square atop his shield. After a fine day's hunting, Asterix and Obelix return to find their village in flames, pillaged by the Romans! They set off to rescue their fellow villagers, accompanied by their faithful Dogmatix. Asterix and Obelix Romastered brings the best of the original title and optimizes it even more. Take your potion because you will help Asterix and Obelix rescue their friends from the clutches of the Romans. Good 3D adventures.

Asterix & Obelix XXL: Romastered on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S plays it far too safe and ends up offering an experience a little bit worse than the original. Its new visuals don’t compensate for some of the puzzles and this only really works to express how mediocre the original truly was. Its long playtime and dated gameplay make Asterix & Obelix feel one of the only things a game shouldn’t - tedious.

Asterix & Obelix XXL Romastered is a timid dusting off of a 17-year-old game which, as it is, shows the weight of years. Archaic structure and game systems alongside quite a few visual bugs and significant framerate drops on consoles.

The books tell the adventures of the inhabitants of a village of Gauls during the Roman occupation in 50 BC. After a fine day's hunting, Asterix and Obelix return to find their village in flames, pillaged by the Romans! They set off to rescue their fellow villagers, accompanied by their faithful Dogmatix. Their journey will take them to Normandy, Greece Helvetia, Egypt and, finally, Rome, in order to save the villagers from the clutches of the emperor Caesar. Toggle between Asterix & Obelix et travel across various regions of the world such as Greece or Egypt to set free Impedimenta, Panacea, Getafix and the other villagers.Fight all the Romans, pirates and Vikings who will stand in your way! Nothing can stop you with magic potion. Since Asterix & Obelix XXL 2 Remastered is quite a mouthful, I will just refer to it as the remaster from now on. It is a 3D action beat-em-up with a lot of platform and puzzle elements.
Switching between both characters during a fight is also a useful tactic to cross greater distances in the battle area. The combat itself is good fun, with lots of different moves to try out, meaning that that part of the game doesn't get stale either. If you have kids, you could probably just play it together, and while the combat, colors, and puzzles will amuse them, you can enjoy the in-jokes and the more than a decade-old cultural references. In the end it is what is is an old game made pretty on Xbox One.
