Considering it was only first released back in 2014 Assassin’s Creed Rogue feels like it was released a lifetime ago and that’s mainly because I’ve only been focusing on the masterpiece that is Origins. Rogue was a game that I did have some enjoyable moments with back in 2014 but it failed in a number of areas which held it back, I was however still interested in the remaster. ThankfullyConsidering it was only first released back in 2014 Assassin’s Creed Rogue feels like it was released a lifetime ago and that’s mainly because I’ve only been focusing on the masterpiece that is Origins. Rogue was a game that I did have some enjoyable moments with back in 2014 but it failed in a number of areas which held it back, I was however still interested in the remaster. Thankfully as far as remasters go it’s not a bad effort but unfortunately the problems that dogged the original remain intact in the remaster. Without a doubt my favourite thing about this game is the amount of exploration that’s allowed and having the freedom to do what one wants to do makes the adventure both fun and enjoyable. Unfortunately the story that follows the exploration isn’t as good, and at times it just bored me to death and basically it failed to hold my attention, which is a shame. Thankfully the gameplay isn’t boring and on the whole most of the mechanics that are in play hold up really well, but it isn’t perfect. The main problem with the gameplay that’s present is without a doubt the combat. The combat feels dated already and it lacks in terms of fluidity which meant getting involved in the combat elements often felt like a chore. If you like game’s where you can sink a decent amount of hours into them then you will definitely find that here. They’ve included all the DLC from the original game and the price is pretty reasonable, which is always good. Most of the content which is present is also pretty good and you will definitely enjoy the main campaign missions because they do include you a great deal along the way. The side missions though aren’t as good and I found them to be a little boring and in my opinion I don’t think they should have had as many as they did because it does make things have a repetetive feel. The presentation side of the game is where the most improvements have been implemented and I think they’ve done a good job here. Visually the game looks better than ever and when you accompany them with the improved sound design you end up having a more immersive experience than in the original. At the end of the day if you’ve never played Rogue before then I thoroughly recommend you try this version out before the original. Don’t get me wrong it still has its problems and it isn’t the best Assassin’s Creed game out there but it gets more right than it gets wrong and when exploring the vast world the game can be absolutely brilliant and that’s more than enough to warrant a recommendation from me. Buggy game. Can't remember if the original was this bad but you'd figured they at least fix a few of the glaring issues. Enemies that suddenly become uncounterable, jumping toward a rope (or branch or whatever) and suddenly going in a completely different direction, attacking someone and suddenly you turn around and start attacking someone behind you, getting stuck on scenery. The list goes on and on. Something that seems new is the bad camera angles. In many combat situations, if you throw someone or otherwise knock them backwards the game zooms in on you. The enemy is off screen and now attacking you and you cannot see them to defend or attack back.

The remaster, when not showing bugs, is a great replay but the bugs really kill the fun.

Typical AC issues hold down a potentially good game. It's a mix of AC3 and AC4. So you can predict your opinion on this game based on your previous experience.

    Pros:
    * The story in this one is good (not great, nothing great since Ezio's saga really happened in this franchise). Shay's story doesn't totally makes sense, but at least it shows something new and uses levels and setting in a satisfying way.
    * Also, all great side characters from AC3 and AC4 make guest appearances.
    * Some levels (like Lisbon) are almost great. Closer to Uncharted levels than AC ones. And the overall world visual can get a glimpse of good artistic direction from time to time.
    * The music is fine.
    * The climbing sections are back. They are simplified to a fault, but still fun to do.
    * The connection to Unity is done very well.

    Cons:
    * The remaster is not a kind one. Illumination is weird (not as weird as AC3 though). There are bugs here, usually not gamebreaking. E.g. in 4k you can see faces getting more details right in front of your eyes or that during ship mission characters don't open mouthes when talking. All these visual glitches take you out of the world.
    * The map is not the real world one. NY we've seen before. So yay, we have penguins & icebergs (serious Patagonia vibes here), but the historical aspect is almost lost. The Seven Year War doesn't make too much sense too.
    * Treasure maps are boring this time around.

OK AC entry, connected with Unity. Game is better than Unity and less bugy now in crisp 4K.

The visual rework may not be the best we've seen, but this 2018 Assassin's Creed Rogue edition is a true opportunity for all the players who missed the game in 2014.

Origins is too good to return to the Assassin's Creed games of yesterday. [June 2018, p.86]

Rogue is a title that released at a terrible time and on consoles that a lot of people had already put in storage. It is nice to see this game get a second chance. It is a great entry in the series, and one that takes the story in places it had never gone. Mix it with the addictive sailing of Black Flag and I definitely recommend it to fans of the series. Don’t sleep on this title. It is definitely worth checking out.
