One of the most insane Assassin's Creed combats I've seen, incredible open world and very good customization, ship combat is also very good, but it suffers from the same thing as other Assassin's Creed RPGs, it's terribly boring after a while.

I have never played a game as boring as AC Odyssey. While the game is fun, it's just way to stretched out. 95 percent is just traveling. Finished a quest? Nice! Now go and talk to 3 more people that are far away from fast travel points. I'm 50 hours in and I just can't be bothered to finish the Atlantis DLC because it's so unbelievably boring.

I love this game! I've played it through twice now including the dlc and regularly pick it up to fight a conquest battle or two. There's tons of gear to collect and upgrades to make which results in a huge range of builds available. The only other AC games I've played is Origins but Odyssey is loads better than that. The only thing I didn't like was the naval battles which seemed clunky compared with the polished main game. Expand

I can be amazed that after this game, Ubisoft began to make donation dumps out of their games. From this part, the Assassin ceased to be an Assassin. We didn't see Assassins again from this part. This game can only be praised for the world and the music. And so.

There is a lot to criticize about this game but when I look back at my playthrough I have to say I really, really enjoyed it. That is mainly due to the beautiful setting and the excellent combat which isnt very deep but extremely fun.

However, it doesn't deserve to be an Assassin's Creed game at all, because the main character is a Spartan Mercenary, who comes in the form of a Demigod, and doesn't take damage when falling from a great height. Overall, it's the best RPG game ever and I'd rate this an 8.1/10.

The story is good as some characters can be interesting but there is so much padding in this game and it does somewhat ruin it- like one quest made you destroy snakes hiding in a vase. Also the micro transactions to level up were also annoying. The mythical bosses were all amazing to fight but had somewhat too much health. The loot system was fun but also too much at times. Also the mini wars was a nice addition as well. Hard to choose between an 8 or a 9. First dlc was awful though. Expand

Clearly inspired by open world games, this series entry lost nearly every aspect of Assassin's Creed. It is not a bad game, far from it, but it isn't really an Assassin's Creed anymore.

There are tons of stuff to do, sadly way to many of these are generated and absolutly useless. What does it help that a NPC talks about his hardship and his pain, only to then just ask for 50 coins and giving you 20.000xp afterwards. The quests are repetetive and without any means. Same for collecting stuff. You are Level 5? Well, then u get 1-2 logs whenever you grab a bush. You are Level 50+? Well, 15-18 logs it is! There is just no need to try to collect this stuff as every smith (the only vendors!) will have hundreds for little money.

What really annoys me and results in most of the score taken out, is the bad condition the game is. Even 2022, when I got the game, it still isn't nearly bug free. Updates still seem to cvome, but they seem to only add more content to buy via microtransactions. There are so many little flaws, that it is ridiculous! The loading times are beyond stupid and there is just no need for all these weapons (which are, again, generated and not designed.) You found a weapon that grants you 2 boni you like? Well, thats that then... upgrade it whenever you visit the smith, you will never find a better weapon again. I still use my knive that I found in Level 12, while I am 60+

This game would be perfect to just play for half an hour and then do something else, sadly it isn't supposed to load fast, you should watch the ads and buy stuff. Typical start: Start Xbox (30s) - Start ACO (60s+ due to many many unskippable screens) - Start screen - Hit Start (45s for checking online if there are any new upgrades to buy) - real start screen with ads for online content - load save (45s+)

After about 4+ minutes you are allowed to start playing. That is beyond stupid! Also, the game ignores many many settings. Like "I don't care about pictures of other players and don't want to use this 'feature'", well, bad luck, they will reappear on every start and will get downloaded anyway!

They say "better stolen well than badly designed yourself", sadly they didn't steal well. The navigation is just bad, the UI isn't anywhere polished (markers will just blend into the environment) and good luck when u want to find any quest without the help of the UI, as the hints are mostly absolut carbage and sometimes just outright wrong. I love exploration, but had to activate the "guide me" setting, as they jusst kept sending me in wrong directions.

I could go on and on, about the level system, the skills, the always fitting enemies, regardless of what level you reach and so on. It is a good game, when you bought it for 10-15€ or free in the gamepass. 60 or even 70-80€ wow!

Except for the fantastically and faithfully made world of ancient Greece, the game offers absolutely nothing. The main story is quite average, at times boring, but what is extremely frustrating is the terribly done mechanism of progression. The game constantly "throws" in front of the player the main missions that are above the current level of the player. And that would not be a problem, if the leveling was done properly, but that is not the case here. Although all currently available side missions are being completed, you are again underleveled to continue the main story. Practically, the player is expected to clean the complete map and solve bandit camps, fortresses, online missions, so that he can continue with the main missions, or buy an XP booster for $ 10 ... It is also extremely frustrating to see the recommended level for a particular mission. It often happens that the mission, whose recommended level is etc.20, contains three smaller missions, one of which always has a mission of 23 levels, and in it come the opponents of the 25th level. Constant grind.

    SRB:
Konstantan grind.

Only thing i didnt care much for was i opted for stealth since typically thats how assassins fight amd its seemed like 80% of all the exotic gear sets were warrior sets and the remaining 20% was split between hunter and stealth, so a lot of awesome gear drops just sat in my ships trunk. An element of choice and consequence has been incorporated into the narrative allowing players to influence the story with their decisions. It's not as deep as something you'd get from BioWare on this front when it comes to being able to constantly define your male or female character's personality or radically change where a quest will take you, but you're given the ability to impact key events in meaningful ways and put your own personal touch on the journey.

This is a lot like Skyrim in that no matter where you go you'll always find something to do. The entire picture of what the main storyline is presenting is spread across three separate questlines, and that's in addition to the variety of side-stories and locations with their own checklist of objectives to complete that you'll encounter. There's a hierarchy of mercenaries you can climb through the ranks of, a secret web of cultists to uncover, and an entire ship with a crew to upgrade and collect resources for. There's a lot of flexibility in all of this too, like how you can stay on top of your gear either by upgrading your favorite pieces or ignore that option entirely in favor of just picking the next best choice out of the constant stream of newly acquired loot, and play in the immersive "Exploration mode" which removes waypoints forcing you to really pay attention to directions given by the NPCs. It's amazing how well all of these systems and really everything Odyssey does comes together. Everything except for the graphics that is...

This is far from the prettiest game on the market. That's somewhat understandable given what a MASSIVE world with an increased amount of foliage compared to the deserts of Egypt it's rendering, but it's disappointing how I was never able to be blown away by these sprawling wildernesses due to it all looking like it was made out of clay. I do have some other, more minor complaints. Such as how the romance options are almost exclusively women, uncomfortably playing into that old stereotype of all gamers being either straight dudes or lesbians and severely limiting the choices for gay men and hetero females. The biggest though has got to be the modern day portion of the series. On top of still finding the new characters unlikable, I continue to have no idea what Ubisoft is even doing with it since they killed off Desmond in III and very little actually happens in this entry at all. It looks as though the Fate of Atlantis DLC provides some much needed direction going forward on this front, but given that I couldn't bring myself to make it through the free chapter of it they were nice enough to give away it remains an aspect of the brand they could abandon altogether and I wouldn't care.

The ancient Greece segments which make up the vast majority of the experience however are fantastic. There might not be any mention of the assassin's or templars that along with the inclusion of mythological creatures has begun to make the overall AC lore kind of murky, yet I appreciate the route the property is taking from a gameplay perspective. So much content is here that even after 50+ hours of play there were still areas of the map I hadn't visited, and all of it is varied and interesting enough to justify doing for the many hours it will keep you busy. It makes for an epic adventure that I would genuinely say is one of the best RPGs I've ever played and easily my new favorite Assassin's Creed.

My god this game is LONG like holy crap. The story is fantastic it's basically pre Assassin's Creed and tempest and explains what happened in the very beginning. I feel like everyone should get the ultimate edition or at least get the dlc The Legacy of the First Blade that all the assassins have in almost every game now and it explains the bloodline of your character.

    - 20 hours into this game. This whole "hold assassination button" and "hold dodge button to roll to put out flames" is stupid. The saves are TERRIBLE. The hold A to assassinate is completely unresponsive and has ruined MULTIPLE stealth attempts because of the unresponsive controls. You pretty much need the 6th sense perk just to compensate for how unresponsive the hold A assassination is. This game took Origins' annoying "assassination doesn't actually assassinate" to a whole new level. You pretty much need to hold A for 90% of enemies in game. These teleporting ultra agro mercenaries are annoying, and the fact that killing regular in-game enemies sets them off makes for awful gameplay. I just had to redo an entire mission because at the very end of a fight at the end, a high level mercenary came and shot me with a fire arrow. I held B to put out the fire, but the button didn't work in time and I died right away. No checkpoint of any kind during that mission apparently.

Main complaints I have (mostly compared to Origins):
    - The Assassin, Warrior, and Hunter damage mechanic is unnecessarily confusing;
    - Complete lack of stealth based game options (no poison darts, no flesh decay arrows, can't even one shot an enemy in the head with an arrow, and assassinations don't actually one-hit a lot of the enemies;
    - Skill tree is a massive step back on Origins (again, I want more stealth kill options);
    - The boar enemies are so unbelievably difficult for what they are.
    - The cutscenes are not great. Alexios looks confused all the time and the facial expressions look like they're glitched or something. Bayek cutscenes were way better. Why do Alexios' eyes need to move around the way they do? It's like a baby looking at a colourful object.
    - The mercenaries are way too aggressive and teleport way too fast, and they shouldn't be getting aggro'd because you beat enemies in an area (non Spartan or Athenians, literally just thugs).
    - The boat combat is annoying and often redundant. Two separate missions now, by the time I got to my boat to undock it, the Athenian or Spartan navy wiped out the enemy I was supposed to kill. Fine I guess, except those same navies make everything near impossible in the ocean without spending crazy money on upgrades.
    - Several loading screens, and they're long.
    - A fair amount of crashes.
    - Movement around the map is annoying and tedious at times. The horse does a full 180 at the slightest bump on a hill, climbing rocks is a glitch fest, or just very slow at best, and there are A LOT of rocks.
    - Really bad level design on some missions. I just wound up wiping out an entire fort, 7-8 elite enemies, a leader of an area, all because my objective (a door) was there. It cost me 2000 drachmae just to pay off the bounties I got during this fight. Update: Once again, I was tasked with multiple objectives within an enemy fort. This resulted in me wiping out the entire fort.
    - The fact braziers can get lit without you actually getting caught. Results in an endless stream of enemies and forces you to spend thousands on paying off mercenaries that teleport to you (unless you want to fight two mercenaries and an entire fort at once).
    - The choice system, though a nice add, is very unrefined and makes for weird unpredictable dialogue and in-game consequence.

    Main improvements:
    - Combat (mainly the blunts, spears, and daggers are usable now, dodging works better, enemy combos are less annoying);
    - Entire mercenary system is better minus the teleportation and unnecessary aggro;
    - Entire conquest/leader system is very fun;
    - Storyline itself is atypical of an AC game, but in a good way.

Ultimately I would recommend this, but it's even further away from AC style games than Origins so don't expect a stealth driven experience. I thought Origins gear system, stealth combat, skill trees, and cutscenes were better. I doubt these opinions change so I'll leave this review up.

On the game, so far it's a 4/10, mostly being faulted due to extremely frustrating mechanics that often break the game (teleporting aggressive mercenaries, unresponsive "hold button" controls. The storyline does tie into the Isu and Templar-ish storylines so it's not just a random Greek game as others have indicated. The AC game's lore has always involved Isu and artifacts. It's never been just a history stealth game, and if you like the series, you really should immerse yourself in the Isu storyline because it's a very cool concept on humanity's origins. It's a nice blend of sci-fi, and fantasy.

Ultimately it's fun, but extremely frustrating at times, and it feels like this was not properly play-tested. I want my poison darts back, I want arrows that will actually kill basic enemies on headshots, and I want to just be able to regularly press A for a kill, not hold it. Half the time by the time it's done being held, the enemy is alerted and I'm dragged into a fight with 42 enemies

    - The atmosphere in the Greece world/islands

    Negative points:

    - The map is bloated with icons - Side missions are a must because the leveling system is key to progress in the story. So prepare for a lot of grinding.

I finally finished it! I tried to play through this one on the PS4 last year and became very frustrated which caused me to drop it. It definitely did have some amazing parts, but there was way too much fluff for it to be perfect.

The story follows Alexios (in my case, instead of Kassandra-who may have been better) a mercenary who is trying to track down his family in the most boring and convoluted way possible.

Following a bread crumb trail through a version of Ancient Greece where everyone sounds like Count Dracula for some reason, he is able to find a way to look and sound wooden in even the most heart felt situations (Includes plenty of forgettable characters and meaningless deaths).

There are a few really stand out set pieces and ideas. Top of the list would be the hunt for the Isu artifacts that bring you in to confrontations with for mythical Grecian creatures-including battling a Cyclops in a volcano, the Minatour's Labyrinth, and a Gorgon in a creepy forest of petrified people/statues. And the conquest battles were pretty cool, too (there were just way too many).

I think that is the only (non-story/character) problem-everything is great, there's just too much of it. You can have a great time clearing a fort and barely escape alive, only to realize that there are hundreds more forts and camps copied and pasted throughout the land.

The combat and leveling system was done very well. It was enough to stay interesting (despite many respecs) through the whole 128 hours I put in to the game. I was able to try out all of the skills and abilities for a good chunk of the game before moving on to the next build. I think the most fun I had with the game was playing a stealthy assassin. Warrior builds took forever to kill anything and Hunter builds were almost too easy and required precious crafting materials to do any damage.

It was a bit of a bummer the way they scaled the levels so that the enemies were never too far below you, making everyone seem like a bullet sponge (except for arrows/swords).

Ship combat was also handled well. You certainly don't have as many tricks as you do in Black Flag, but recruiting Lieutenants and being encouraged to cleave ships in half were both great additions

There is also a system for hunting members of the villainous Cult of Kosmos that deserves a shout. Finding clues to uncover each target or coming across them at random felt really cool. The Mercenary system was a bit similar. While initially seeming like a real headache to have dangerous enemies rolling up on you in the middle of a quest, when I leaned into the mechanic I found myself going out of my way to hunt these guys down.

Everything that was done well here was done better afterward in Valhalla, but I'm still glad I played it if only for the cool Isu questline.

Also, I really hate the present day stuff. Layla Hassaan is a crappy character and her voice actress is the worst in a game full of terrible voice acting. I never cared what she was up to and every section she is in had me rolling my eyes out of my sockets.

I did play through the DLC as well as the main story. Legacy of the First Blade was a bit disappointing, but it did give you another version of the Cult of Kosmos-so it was worth it just for that. It also ties in to AC Origins in a cool sort of way.

Fate of Atlantis had some excellent pieces, but they really went a bit too far with the height of everything. Climbing for twenty minutes to get to up to a fort is not enjoyable and basically counts as loading time. Still worth it for the extra story and additional lands to explore.

Overall, a great game with some fantastic ideas-but don't show up for the story!

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is debatably not an Assassin's Creed game and that is one reason why I loved it. If you've skipped a couple entries of the Assassins Creed game, you’ve missed a lot. If you've skipped a couple entries of the Assassins Creed game, you’ve missed a lot. Assassins Creed Origins came out in 2017 and was a complete rework of established gameplay mechanics found in earlier entries. It leaned heavily towards an RPG game opposed to the traditional action/stealth game that previous Assassins Creed games were defined by. This drastic departure has resulted in many fans longing for the traditional gameplay, but with the release of Odyssey, Ubisoft doubled down on this style even more. If you were to show this game to someone who was stranded on a deserted island for the last four years, beyond the title screen, there is not much that would signal them that this was an Assassins Creed game. Also, there would be a lot more that you need to update this castaway on before showing them Assassins Creed Odyssey, but that is beside the point. Essentially, how you approach this game will heavily dictate how much you enjoy it. If you go into this game expecting your traditional Assassin's Creed experience, you may be disappointed. I recommend you approach this game with new eyes and an open mind to what the franchise might be evolving into.

The Assassin's Creed franchise is no stranger to taking historical events and subverting the details to fit their characters; modifying the event to fit the game’s narrative. Odyssey opens up with an epic battle where you are fighting as King Leonidas at the battle of Thermopylae. I would regret not mentioning that you can absolutely Spartan kick your way across this entire game, like Leonidas did in the film ‘300’ (click that link, that scene is so satisfying). Though you only play the introduction as Leonidas, you continue the entirety of the game as one of his heirs, Kassandra or Alexios.

Odyssey takes place in the historical setting of Greece during the Peloponnesian War. If you're not a history buff and don’t immediately know the context of this war, the quick summary is this: the Spartans were at war with the Athenians due to concerns regarding the growing power of the Athenian Empire. Throughout your journey you will encounter historical figures like Socrates, Hippokrates, Pythagoras and many more. These characters present you with quests or dialogue that directly connect to historical events and emphasize the complexities of the war. This history rich backdrop creates a perfect setting for Odyssey where players get to serve both sides and make choices that will impact the war. Odyssey introduces “Conquest Battles” where players can choose to partake in large scale battles fighting for either the Spartans or Athenians. I was not the biggest fan of this mechanic due to the pure chaos of these scenes, but it served the story well and drove home the impact of your choices.

In my opinion, the biggest issue with this game is that the experience grind is far too slow and that story missions are gated by your player level. There was a similar mechanic in Origins, but the impact is far more hostile in Odyssey. There were times when I wanted to dive deeper into the main story, but was stopped due to my level-forcing me to then complete side quests. Many of which were quite boring. Side quests like generic fetch quests or “kill this animal” quests, lack the depth to justifiably pull you out of a compelling and entertaining story. It feels like Ubisoft intentionally slowed the overall character progression to nudge you towards buying an XP boost. There has been plenty of backlash due to this practice and hopefully we see this removed in Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

All in all, this does not feel like an Assassins Creed game... and that is okay. The story contains very little reference to the Templars and Assassins Order, but both groups are represented by philosophical concepts of order and chaos. Assassinations are far less reliable in this entry; trading in your hidden blade for a broken spear and a more direct combat approach. The player menus are unrecognizable from classic versions of the game where skill trees and armor selection screens now reside. While not a traditional version of Assassins Creed, I hope that this is the new formula that Ubisoft iterates on. There are classic elements that I wish were more present (like a larger emphasis on stealth and parkour) but I can’t deny that this is the most fun I have ever had with an Assassins Creed game. From the vast array of things to do in Assassins Creed Odyssey to the deep RPG mechanics that enable enjoyable gameplay, this is debatably the best entry in the Assassins Creed franchise. Assassins Creed Odyssey is truly an impressive game and a 9 out of 10 on the Busch League Gaming scoring metric.

The Ancient Greece of the game is very faithful, with MANY historical sites and statues, the game provides a very unique experience of visiting these places that today are only ruins and gives you texts about the history of these places. The story is very good, but a little cliché. The equipment system is very addictive, you always want to see a new armor at the beginning of the game, each piece of armor changes the look of the character. The equipment has a minimum level to be equipped. If your weapon or armor is at a much lower level than yours, you can go to the blacksmith to improve that item, or carve it to give it some extra skill.
Stealth is in the game, however, you can only stealthily assassinate an enemy if it is at most two levels higher than yours. Each mission has a recommended level, and often, especially at the end of the game (the player is hyped to see the outcome of the story) the level of the mission can be more than TEN more than yours, forcing you to spend a lot of time doing side missions and grinding, unless you buy armor, weapons, xp, resources, crew for the ship, and other things with your real money. Practically all the customization items on the boat, like sailing, decorations on the ship's tip and crew skin, skins for the horse, are paid, which would be much better to release more of these items on missions.
The story of the game is about before the assassins exist, it is about the origin of the Templars, which was because of disagreement with the Templars that the Order of Assassins was created, so that is why the game does not focus so much on stealth

I would absolutely love something like Odyssey 2 or a game like it with those features and stuff I mentioned, those are the things that make it one of the best games ever. Expand

I'll tell you what, the game is pretty bad, but it has a few good things too. For example, the story of the game is really interesting, it has some moments when you can feel a bit of fear, sadness and happiness. And the music By The Flight (who also made the soundtrack for Horizon Zero Dawn). Those are all good things and now there are more bad things about the game. Since the game was created by Scott Phillips who also made Syndicate, he saved the gameplay from Syndicate in Odyssey, like you have to kill someone, take care of kids and etc. This gameplay in Syndicate was really good, but Odyssey was worst because you just have to kill somebody a few times and steal other stuff, but the fight against someone looks really cool. Another bad thing is that this game is just Origins 2.0 because there's almost the same gameplay, the same animation, the same goal for the character (kill all cultists), and to be honest that's not really good. Also, the bad thing in this game that the game breaks the lore of AC because now the Isus are gods for some reason, there are mythological creatures, like Cyclops, Medusas, etc. And the game has lots of f***ing grind which is bad, but sometimes I'm seeing a beautiful world. The World is absolutely breathtaking sometimes! The Synchronization Points offer great views!Graphically the Game also is awesome! The World might be huge and beautiful at times, it is empty, really empty. Some quests begin on one side of the Map, and actually are on the other side.
The Story itself is good. You follow in the steps of your parents and you discover a secret cult and anyy other things. But you just have to level up your character really really often, which is a HUGE Grind in a SOLO Game. Yet you can skip it, only for Money.
The Combat was a thing i loved in Odyssey. While it felt strange being a Spartan without a shield, it was bombastic and fun!
The Quests were alright. Some would start on one end of the map and lead you to another. And almost always after visiting Athens, you are told to level up your character to progress in the story. Thankfully, most of the Side Quests were pretty fun.
The Characters you meet are awesome too, they have got decent voice actors and really great Backstories.

    Verdict:
    In Overall, an 8/10.
While being a huge grind once you progress and having a beautiful, yet empty and way too big open World, the Combat, The Graphics and the Story are awesome!
I would consider Origins better than this, yet only slightly.

Expand

There is a lot to like in this game. However, the story is quite bloated, meaning that it will take a lot of effort to even finish the main quest. If this is something you like, I can definitely recommend this game. This does, however impact the pacing of the game in a bad way.

On the other hand, the Hunter/Warrior/Assassin RPG elements don't work very well, as its never really possible to stick to one of these play styles. The combat is almost unavoidable, and it can often takes an age to kill enemies if you are unable to instantly assassinate or headshot (with necessary ability). Quest variety and enemy variety is still lacking also. There is also way too much legendary loot to find, unless your look to customise your ship/horse, where there is very little.

It has enough content to keep you playing until you forget what you're playing for. Its as fun as the last game. Even so, it's still not able to reach the heights better games in the genre have managed to reach.

It is unquestionable now that the revision of the AC formula first presented to us in AC Origins has refreshed the gameplay and given Ubisoft a clearer direction of where this series should go next. When I first played Origins, I generally enjoyed the much needed changes to combat and character progression. However, I did feel like the game didn't really take advantage of those changes, as the way that the protagonist interacted with the world still seemed pretty basic to me.

Odyssey, however is a whole other story.

It takes Origins' gameplay and brings it to a new, lively world, where mercenaries want your head and you're caught in the fire of a bloody war between two powerful armies. Initially, you're only a misthios looking for wealth, but you soon come across a secret organization, who secretly dominate greek politics. A classic AC tale, which we have seen before, but the new cult hunting mechanic makes this chase much more personal. In some ways, I feel like this is what the developers of the first Assassin's Creed wanted their game to be.

A good story, great RPG mechanics for you to find your play style, big world with interesting locations, gorgeus sights to behold and DLC content that feels like it could very well be an entirely new game. I'd definetely recommend this to lovers of the time period the game is set in and people who like action RPGs.

I'm 150+ hours in, determined to get all the achievements and, while I do think that I have a well-grounded knowledge of the gameplay and missions structures, every new tweak in my skill set brings with it a new discovery about how I want to play this game.

The map is too big and too similar across each region and even with fast travel it takes too long to reach any destination.
The main character is bipolar and makes no sense apart from shouting MALAKAS every second.
The story is meh. And after playing hundreds of hours and finishing the game you will realise that you wasted your time.
And finally, the game bearly feels like an Assassin's Creed game. Yes, you can stealth but you can get it done faster by just taking on 30 guards (that all take 100 hits to kill at any level) at the same time and never die.
The game should have been called ''Ancient Greece: The Curse of the Malakas'' and not part of the AC franchise.

By this I mean that Ubisoft tend to put out games that are just good. Not great, not game changing, not that memorable but consistently "good". I'm not saying that AC:O isn't a good game, i just put around 80hrs into it during lockdown but I will say that now I'm done I can't really think of any standout moment but I just mindless spent 80 hrs roaming the map and killing things and generally being an overpowered demi-god and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

The greatest strength of AC:O is easy to figure out; it is absolutely huge. The game world itself is absolutely sprawling and even though there are parts of the map where you'll likely die the second you try to fight something there until the end game, none of it is locked away from the beginning. You can travel to your hearts content you just will get slaughtered if you travel to the wrong bit too early. But besides that there is just so much to do. Sidequests must number in the hundreds, the main quest itself must be around 30 or 40 hours of gameplay. This is before we then delve into the newly added Mercenary ladder you can climb, the gladiator arena you can conquer, the mythical beasts you can slay, the legendary animals you can hunt, the huge network of cultists you can track down and assassinate across the map. There is a ton to do in the base game alone. I have recently only reached the point where I can start the DLC and I've put 80 hours into this game, its probably my most played game of the year.

But here lies my problem with AC:O and indeed most Ubisoft games. There is a ton to do, most of it is decent but none of it spectacular. The combat system is solid and fun enough to keep you playing but fighting really boils down to figuring out which skill takes out the most health, using that skill and then waiting for the cooldown to expire to use it again. The bigger bosses of the game do require some strategy yes but this certainly isn't Dark Souls. The amount of quest content is ridiculous but unlike The Witcher 3 where the content was huge and almost all of it interesting and unique you never really get that feeling in AC:O. It's just another chore to undertake in the name of grinding out XP to unlock another skill. It gets repetitive. It is fun but it certainly gets repetitive.

My main gripe with the game is that there is plenty to see and do but none of it is particularly enthralling to do. The story included. In fact I had more fun just roaming the lands than I ever did advancing the story. Characters were annoying and hard to connect to on any personal level. When main characters in this story died I genuinely could not have cared less. During one scene obviously intended to have emotional weight I was skim reading the subtitles and skipping dialogue. Thats a bad sign for your games story when the player is doing that.

So the story isn't the best but the open world roaming is fun. There is plenty to explore and do. You can happily spend hours bouncing from fort to fort, killing and maiming everyone you face in a sort of mildly challenging and mildly fun manner. The world for the most part looks very pretty and there is a ton of verticality in the map which comes in handy since by far the most fun thing to do in the game is to throw people from great heights to kill them. It basically never gets old and the more important the enemy the funnier it gets. I killed the head a cult branch who the game bigs up as some scary warrior by running up and simply booting them off a cliff they were looking out from and watching them ragdoll hilariously hundreds of feet to their death.

I think ultimately the game is fun but it feels oversaturated. You will pick up literally hundreds of different weapons (there are some 7 or 8 different classes of weapon), bows, helmets and all other armor. They all sort of become blurred together because until the end game you just equip the one with the biggest number and during the endgame you will have one legendary set you never take off. There are a few different enemy types but really its just button mashing and the same skill moves over and over.

It is, in the end, one big, huge grindfest and if you're into that, as I am, then you'll pass the time quite pleasantly. But honestly I often sit there literally whilst playing AC:O and think "I should play something better" but I never quite do. You sit there and sort of settle into this rhythm of "this is pretty good". Thats the problem though its a good one to have, everything is just mundanely decent. The best open world games do what AC:O does but better, when I'm playing RDR2 or Witcher 3 I'm consistently having a lot of fun. When I'm playing this it just feels good fun but shallow. It is by no means a bad game but there certainly are better open worlds to explore out there.

I started the game towards the end of January, relatively soon after Origins, which I really liked. Now towards the end of March I finished the game after a total of 85 hours.

Got a total of 55/78 successes (1015 success points). In the end, a progress of 95% after I have done pretty much the most reasonable side quests, all bosses and cultists, as well as discovering every region and upgrading everything.

    Graphics / setting

Hammer. I played on the One X towards the end and the game is just beautiful in places. The characters were beautifully staged and I really like the setting. Even more than Egypt in origins. The landscape was breathtakingly beautiful and, overall, unbelievably huge.

The performance actually always ran smoothly. One or the other time there were funny glitches and graphic bugs, but acceptable for the map size.

    Gameplay

I just like the new AC direction. I really like the combat system and the advanced RPG elements from Origins blend in perfectly with the gameplay flow.

Overall, I would have liked a little more qualitative diversity in the active skills and perhaps a little earlier the very large selection of passive skills. I almost always played by assassination or ultimately hand-to-hand combat, trying pretty much all weapons. I just didn't like the bars, they just didn't have any oomph.

    story

As always, I don't want to write so much here; in any case, I was satisfied with my end. In general, I really liked the trip with Kassandra, a great odyssey.

    Negatives

    - horse physics (ran very buggy)
    - Control sometimes led to unwanted assassinations when you just wanted to loot
    - Mercenary system (actually cool) but not well integrated, too often you can't understand the persecution
    - sometimes the gestures were completely exaggerated

    Conclusion

    9/10 olive trees

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoyed AC: Origins, and thought I would like this game as well. However, as much as the scale of the game was improved, it feels as if the game play was made worse. Ill start with what I like about the game. First, the graphics and sound design are very well made. This is one of the best, if not the best, looking AC games. The views are beautiful and the sounds in the game are crisp. The voice acting is also well done. The armor and weapon look customization make it great to mix and match armor set appearances to make your ideal ancient greek mercenary. The story starts of really well yet it loses its appeal quickly. Now for the bad. The plot feels like a repeat of Origins. A cult is taking over and they hurt your family, go kill them. This was done better in Origins, as Bayek felt more likable than both Kassandra and Alexios and his motive felt stronger. While you do get some dialogue choices to try to make them feel how you want them to, they rarely feel meaningful. A lot of your choices lead no where and just end up being "take quest or dont". Only a handful of choices ever end up affecting the world. Additionally, after about halfway through the game, the story feels weak. Theres not much a reason to hunt down the cult other than they are hunting you and your mother and took your brother (who is now part of the cult). The game fails to deliver any sort of personal threat from the cult. After you meet your mother, she is never in any danger from the cult whatsoever, and neither are you. The mercenary system (which just feels like a lazy way of adding extra enemies to restricted areas) couldve been used better in this regard, such as having the cult send mercenaries after you throughout the game. At the end of the story, not much pays off. The ending lacks any sense of emotional tension and ends abruptly. The cult is a long grind to hunt down as they are scattered among side objectives and different nations, which you very nearly have to do all side quests in a region to find the cult member in it. Now the combat. The ship combat is great, especially when cleaving ships in half or boarding them. Normal combat feels horrible at least until youre high lvl, at which point it only feels a bit better but still not entertaining. Every enemy is stronger than you, period. They have more health, deal more damage per attack than you do, and can actually use a shield. Hitting an enemy barely does any damage, no matter how well upgraded your weapons and armor are. Only legendary armor sets have any noticeable effects on damage. Melee weapons feel like youre hitting someone with a tree branch, and bows feel as if you just threw pebbles. The best way to improve this is legendary armor sets, however you only get those from either completing lengthy quest lines or hunting all cultists within a branch. You could choose to play stealthily, but you will soon find that "assassinations" very quickly stop doing enough damage after a few lvls. How do you fix this? Find cult artifacts to upgrade your spear, which can be found on cultists. Which you have to spend multiple hours hunting down, and each time you upgrade the spear it needs more artifacts to be upgraded. In fact, you cant fully upgrade the spear until you kill all the cultists, at which point you will have nearly nothing left to do in the game (I finished everything in the main game and did not bother with the dlc). Another way to upgrade your damage is through skills, which are funnily enough capped depending on your spear level. Great. Or you could just wait till you reach lvl 50 and unlock legacy skills. These allow you to increase damage or protection percentages. Sounds great until you realize theres three branches, each with around 30 skills, each with about 20 levels. You only get 1 skill point per level and the xp requirement increases each time you go up a level. Not only do the boss fights feel like an mmo, but also the damn leveling. I heard a lot of good things about this game, namely that it was a good rpg. I play a lot of rpgs and theyre my favorite genre of game. I hated this. The rpg elements felt like they were implemented by a team who had a very rough idea of what rpg mechanics were. The story felt uninteresting right about after you rescue your mother and loses its tension and structure quickly. Each main quest consists of three split quests which you can do at any time but are usually menial jobs, which can each split into three as well. So it ends up being "do six menial tasks to see a little bit more of the story." Overall, my opinion of the game is low. The rpg mechanics are handled poorly, the combat and stealth are unsatisfying and require a lot of grind to improve, boss fights feel like mmo boss raids, and the story is poorly structured. This fails as an rpg and as an AC game. However, this game does provide an interesting look at a rarely explored setting and made me more interested in learning about ancient Greece in general. I'm aware that the canon version of the story requires a playthrough as kassandra but I'm just not interested in playing as her. The best AC I've played in a long time. The story, graphics, THE PLACES, the landscapes, the sights... All of these were stunning! A must-play without any doubt.

Let me begin this by saying I am not an Assassin's Creed fanboy. I played the very first Assassin's Creed and found it to be boring and repetitive. Odyssey however has really impressed me. It took me a little bit to get into the game world (a few hours), but once I did I found it fascinating. The ancient Greek world Ubisoft created in Odyssey feels alive and intriguing. The worst AC game in the series, It is a bad The Witcher 3 clone, which lacks Assassin's Creed as well. It is neither a decent rpg nor an AC game.

It was yet another good game from Ubisoft and I always like to be an Assassin again. I look forward to seeing if the next Assassin’s Creed game will be just as big as Odyssey, although not too big please.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is plenty of fun, and it’s a solid turnaround for the franchise. The future of the franchise is bright.
