This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoyed AC: Origins, and thought I would like this game as well. However, as much as the scale of the game was improved, it feels as if the game play was made worse. Ill start with what I like about the game. First, the graphics and sound design are very well made. This is one of the best, if not the best, looking AC games. The views are beautiful and the sounds in the game are crisp. The voice acting is also well done. The armor and weapon look customization make it great to mix and match armor set appearances to make your ideal ancient greek mercenary. The story starts of really well yet it loses its appeal quickly. Now for the bad. The plot feels like a repeat of Origins. A cult is taking over and they hurt your family, go kill them. This was done better in Origins, as Bayek felt more likable than both Kassandra and Alexios and his motive felt stronger. While you do get some dialogue choices to try to make them feel how you want them to, they rarely feel meaningful. A lot of your choices lead no where and just end up being "take quest or dont". Only a handful of choices ever end up affecting the world. Additionally, after about halfway through the game, the story feels weak. Theres not much a reason to hunt down the cult other than they are hunting you and your mother and took your brother (who is now part of the cult). The game fails to deliver any sort of personal threat from the cult. After you meet your mother, she is never in any danger from the cult whatsoever, and neither are you. The mercenary system (which just feels like a lazy way of adding extra enemies to restricted areas) couldve been used better in this regard, such as having the cult send mercenaries after you throughout the game. At the end of the story, not much pays off. The ending lacks any sense of emotional tension and ends abruptly. The cult is a long grind to hunt down as they are scattered among side objectives and different nations, which you very nearly have to do all side quests in a region to find the cult member in it. Now the combat. The ship combat is great, especially when cleaving ships in half or boarding them. Normal combat feels horrible at least until youre high lvl, at which point it only feels a bit better but still not entertaining. Every enemy is stronger than you, period. They have more health, deal more damage per attack than you do, and can actually use a shield. Hitting an enemy barely does any damage, no matter how well upgraded your weapons and armor are. Only legendary armor sets have any noticeable effects on damage. Melee weapons feel like youre hitting someone with a tree branch, and bows feel as if you just threw pebbles. The best way to improve this is legendary armor sets, however you only get those from either completing lengthy quest lines or hunting all cultists within a branch. You could choose to play stealthily, but you will soon find that "assassinations" very quickly stop doing enough damage after a few lvls. How do you fix this? Find cult artifacts to upgrade your spear, which can be found on cultists. Which you have to spend multiple hours hunting down, and each time you upgrade the spear it needs more artifacts to be upgraded. In fact, you cant fully upgrade the spear until you kill all the cultists, at which point you will have nearly nothing left to do in the game (I finished everything in the main game and did not bother with the dlc). Another way to upgrade your damage is through skills, which are funnily enough capped depending on your spear level. Great. Or you could just wait till you reach lvl 50 and unlock legacy skills. These allow you to increase damage or protection percentages. Sounds great until you realize theres three branches, each with around 30 skills, each with about 20 levels. You only get 1 skill point per level and the xp requirement increases each time you go up a level. Not only do the boss fights feel like an mmo, but also the damn leveling. I heard a lot of good things about this game, namely that it was a good rpg. I play a lot of rpgs and theyre my favorite genre of game. I hated this. The rpg elements felt like they were implemented by a team who had a very rough idea of what rpg mechanics were. The story felt uninteresting right about after you rescue your mother and loses its tension and structure quickly. Each main quest consists of three split quests which you can do at any time but are usually menial jobs, which can each split into three as well. So it ends up being "do six menial tasks to see a little bit more of the story." Overall, my opinion of the game is low. The rpg mechanics are handled poorly, the combat and stealth are unsatisfying and require a lot of grind to improve, boss fights feel like mmo boss raids, and the story is poorly structured. This fails as an rpg and as an AC game. However, this game does provide an interesting look at a rarely explored setting and made me more interested in learning about ancient Greece in general.

The developers of the Assassin's Creed series just keep putting more ways to exploit their customers by offering "Player Choice" to skip the grind. This game is as grindy if not MORE of a grind then the last one. They keep calling it "Player Choice" when it's basically saying the grind is purposely put in there to extend playtime. Listen, I played Castlevania: Symphony of the Night exploring the entire castle, getting all the equipment, all the HP UP and MP UP with most of the Heart Max up. Getting to a level that only the programmers knew to get to where your HP hits the quadruple digits to me is probably the biggest sense of accomplishment that I got out of the game. Then they put in a grind with the sole purpose to get you to pay to not play the game that you already paid for and are trying to play, it actually defeats the purpose of progression in a video game.

The 4K graphics look good, but that still doesn't make the game feel any less dumb from the previous game. Also, you might have noticed that a whole bunch of Ubisoft games are starting to have the same formula. Recycled fetch quests, recycled extra objectives and very rarely; a recycled character. People are right to keep getting disappointed by this **** and I hope somehow they actually get such angry feedback it upsets their investors. So, in conclusion; don't fall for obvious traps like this in games anymore. They apparently want to exploit you so they can get more money out of you. Oh wait, the gameplay? What do you want? It plays almost identically to the last 2 Assassin's Creed games.

This is nothing but a dumbed-down version of a previously great franchise. Combat, combat, combat, combat, combat. Forced down your throat. So many people are arguing that this is a good game, sure it is, but could you define an ASSASSIN?

Most people think of an assassin as a silent killer. Most assassins don't lead armies, or even large bodies of men, because the role of an assassin is not to be the heavy from TF2. An assassin is a silent, stealthy killer, who strikes without even being seen.

This is an RPG, a complete and awful RPG. If this was called "Ancient Greek Magical Unicorn RPG Simulator", I'd give it a straight 10. I mean, the only reason I'm not giving it a 0 is because of the clear ingenuity of Ubisoft to create a game that puts you severely out of pocket, then comes back around and actually makes your gameplay experience hell unless you pay more money. Now THAT'S a sneaky assassination of my hard earned cash.

Ubisoft makes the same mistakes over and again - employing B-grade idiots who don't know games. They botched the Anno series. They botched the AC series. What's gonna go next. Now, Ubisoft's own fans are trembling, wondering where the next sneak attack comes from. Ah! I get it. That's the real meaning of ASSASSIN'S creed! You sneaky buggers, you just decided to deliver your punchline differently.

Seriously, if you like RPG's you probably already blew like $5,000 on LOL, why spend more on a crappy AC rip-off? Give it up, half the AC gamers are casual, we don't want a grind, we don't want to play some role just so you get a feminist endorsement. History sucks, we get it, but what sucks even more is people like the PR department at Ubi deciding what version of history we get. Really? They market this as realistic? I had more fun reading my old grade 8 ancient history textbook.

I own every AC game, invested much more into the DLC, love it. It was the reason I began parkour and I now enjoy it a lot. But if you want an RPG, just rename it ok, just don't screw the age-old fans. I'm not buying another AC game... period.

And I'm not the only one. My review counts for nothing, Ubisoft is massive, multi billion, why would they care about my $60? I'll tell you why. Because I am just one of many. I Implore you, anyone who reads this, do not surrender a single cent to Ubi. Make them learn the hard way. They clearly haven't learned.

But, at the end of the day, all the people who like RPG games are usually playing a ROLE playing game cause their OWN ROLE, AKA LIFE, is not interesting enough. So even though AC is dead to me, I still have a community and can live AC stunts out in real life. So screw you Ubisoft, I'm going outside. Great job, not only will I not spend money on AC, I've stoped buying your other games.

After all, we vote with our wallets, vote against this or the future for you gamers won't be bright, just extremely expensive.

I just registered a meta critic account for the first time today so I could rate this game, because it is that awful. It is the worst experience I’ve ever had with an Assassin’s Creed game, having played almost every one of them since the beginning. They took all of the good elements from AC: Origins (which was actually a great and fun game) and threw them all in the trash. Ubisoft Quebec, which remains a stain on the Ubisoft brand and name, have tried to turn the AC franchise into an action RPG in the most superficial ways possible. They added dialogue options into Assassin’s Creed for the first time ever, not because it adds to the story and the franchise, but because almost every game nowadays has dialogue options so AC has to have it now too. They give you a preset character (either Alexis or Kassandra) who has their own character traits and morals that show up in mocaped cutscenes you can’t interact with, but at the same time give you the option to turn that character into a murderous psychopath who can kill entire villages of civilians and acts like a dick to everyone. There’s no feeling of immersion or relatability to this character since there really is no character, and they are completely susceptible to violent mood swings based entirely on your whim. The “story” is poorly written by AC standards, is horribly paced, ends abruptly and PALES in comparison to Origins. “Exploring” this vast open world becomes a chore when you realize almost every location in the game is just a bandit or soldier camp where the enemies will just attack you on sight. Sure, location variety was a problem in Origins, but they’ve doubled down on the lack of variety in this game. The cities and towns in this game are designed with no free running potential, so the parkour which has become a staple of this franchise is nearly absent. The visuals are somehow mostly worse than in Origins, a game two years older running on the same engine, with noticeable downgrades in lighting and fire effects, facial animations, and the environments in general. And the combat system is (in my opinion) the worst part of this game. They somehow managed to create a combat system that copies most of the mechanics from Origins but is objectively worse in every way. They completely removed the ability to use a shield, so if you liked that from Origins, it’s gone. The attacks in this game don’t feel or look nearly as weighty or have as much impact as they do in Origins. The cardinals sin though, and the thing that makes this combat system so bad, is that every single enemy is a damage sponge that can tank a ridiculous amount of hits before going down, just like in AC: Syndicate. Every enemy, from the big beefy hoplites with heavy shields and armor, to the archers and marksmen who are wearing no armor, all take a ridiculous amount of hits to kill, which turns the combat system (which should be this game’s biggest strength) into a tedious chore that you try to avoid at all costs. But it’s not like you can avoid it completely, since most enemies can’t even be killed with an assassination from stealth in one hit. Sure that was a problem with Origins too, but there are way more enemies that will survive a stealth assassination in this game than in Origins, which completely ruins the point of playing like an assassin, since trying to assassination an enemy will just have that enemy alerted to you and not dead, and then alert the other guards around you as well. Oh and you can also drive a boat I guess. I don’t know, that sort of seems like an after thought in this game, and is definitely not nearly as well done as the naval portion of Black Flag was. I passionately hate this game, and I will never be playing anything made by Ubisoft Quebec ever again. Expand
