I hated playing this game, I really did. I genuinely wanted to stop several times and just 'quit'.
I feel the next games of Assassin's Creed are going to be more detached of what it means to be an AC game, which is one of my most notable criticisms of ORIGINS. I don't think this open-world thing is good for the franchise at all. It's not fun to play AC anymore, not even the mythology could save ODYSSEY.

I will definitely be skipping the next one if it's just another 'more annoying version of Origins'. I really really hope for a serious change, cause this isn't working for me or other fans of the franchise. I really can't believe people are handing out 10s for this.

The old games were fun, yes, but after years of being desynchronized for being spotted in a follow mission or killing a civilian, I agree that it was time for some change.
The lore and setting of Ancient Greece are fun and intriguing, offering plenty to be discovered and explored. The world is rather detailed and as another user put it, immersive, making it easy to get lost in the world of Ancient Greece. The map is large, the largest of any AC game so far I believe, but I don't view that as a problem personally. If you give me areas to explore, I'll explore them, simple as that.
The RPG elements introduced in Origins have been improved on, providing an even more open world with more areas to explore and things to find. The visuals and voice acting are great, and the dialogue options are refreshing for the franchise, after many games of your character forming their thoughts and opinions entirely on their own. The romance options aren't something I delved too far into, though I'm glad I don't have to spend any longer watching my character woo a female prostitute to help them in their bidding. More choice is introduced than ever before, adding to your own immersion into the world.
Both Alexios and Kassandra are engaging protagonists regardless of who you choose, though I personally preferred the latter. The main story is tragic and fun, and through the right choices, a happy ending is possible. Kassandra or Alexios will travel between the lands of Ancient Greece in the search for their family and who they really are, while dodging Mercenaries, hunting Cultists, and even participating in the Peloponnesian War as they do so. The main story is a bit long, though again, I don't see that as a problem. If the main story is too short, what's the point of the game?
The game also offers many optional elements, such as participating in Conquest Battles, doing side quests, and purchasing DLCs. Both of the DLCs made for intriguing additions to the game, with the Fate of Atlantis DLC diving even deeper into the lore of Ancient Greece than the main story had itself.
Some may complain about the "bloat" of the game. And while I agree that it is large, there is no one pressuring you to do every single side quest that pops up on the map. I don't know crap about game development, and even I know that more little quests will pop up eventually because it's part of an algorithm. There is plenty of content available to enjoy in AC Odyssey, and while every little side quest may not be its own great adventure, the game as a whole certainly is a hell of an Odyssey.
It may be different from the earlier games, but in my opinion, the franchise needed some redirection. Odyssey was quick to become my top game of the franchise. 10/10

I just registered a meta critic account for the first time today so I could rate this game, because it is that awful. It is the worst experience I’ve ever had with an Assassin’s Creed game, having played almost every one of them since the beginning. They took all of the good elements from AC: Origins (which was actually a great and fun game) and threw them all in the trash. Ubisoft Quebec, which remains a stain on the Ubisoft brand and name, have tried to turn the AC franchise into an action RPG in the most superficial ways possible. They added dialogue options into Assassin’s Creed for the first time ever, not because it adds to the story and the franchise, but because almost every game nowadays has dialogue options so AC has to have it now too. They give you a preset character (either Alexis or Kassandra) who has their own character traits and morals that show up in mocaped cutscenes you can’t interact with, but at the same time give you the option to turn that character into a murderous psychopath who can kill entire villages of civilians and acts like a dick to everyone. There’s no feeling of immersion or relatability to this character since there really is no character, and they are completely susceptible to violent mood swings based entirely on your whim. The “story” is poorly written by AC standards, is horribly paced, ends abruptly and PALES in comparison to Origins. “Exploring” this vast open world becomes a chore when you realize almost every location in the game is just a bandit or soldier camp where the enemies will just attack you on sight. Sure, location variety was a problem in Origins, but they’ve doubled down on the lack of variety in this game. The cities and towns in this game are designed with no free running potential, so the parkour which has become a staple of this franchise is nearly absent. The visuals are somehow mostly worse than in Origins, a game two years older running on the same engine, with noticeable downgrades in lighting and fire effects, facial animations, and the environments in general. And the combat system is (in my opinion) the worst part of this game. They somehow managed to create a combat system that copies most of the mechanics from Origins but is objectively worse in every way. They completely removed the ability to use a shield, so if you liked that from Origins, it’s gone. The attacks in this game don’t feel or look nearly as weighty or have as much impact as they do in Origins. The cardinals sin though, and the thing that makes this combat system so bad, is that every single enemy is a damage sponge that can tank a ridiculous amount of hits before going down, just like in AC: Syndicate. Every enemy, from the big beefy hoplites with heavy shields and armor, to the archers and marksmen who are wearing no armor, all take a ridiculous amount of hits to kill, which turns the combat system (which should be this game’s biggest strength) into a tedious chore that you try to avoid at all costs. But it’s not like you can avoid it completely, since most enemies can’t even be killed with an assassination from stealth in one hit. Sure that was a problem with Origins too, but there are way more enemies that will survive a stealth assassination in this game than in Origins, which completely ruins the point of playing like an assassin, since trying to assassination an enemy will just have that enemy alerted to you and not dead, and then alert the other guards around you as well. Oh and you can also drive a boat I guess. I don’t know, that sort of seems like an after thought in this game, and is definitely not nearly as well done as the naval portion of Black Flag was. I passionately hate this game, and I will never be playing anything made by Ubisoft Quebec ever again. Expand

First ofd the game is big and may seem daunting for some players but I for one love the amount of content that the game provides. For Ubisoft to do their take on a Witcher 3 style of game set in Ancient Greece I believe they knocked it out of the park. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is breathtaking. I don’t think I have ever been so addicted to a game before. There is so much to do, and I was compelled to do all of it. Kassandra is a great character with a truly intriguing story to follow. Greece is a beautiful place to explore, full of life and many different environments. The game is just so much fun to play! When I installed it, I never knew I'd be so invested while simultaneously frustrated. I completed the main game and all its dlc. I'll go over the main game first.

    Main Game:

The game I played has its ups and downs. I'll talk about the story first. I absolutely loved it. I don't know much about the entire Obstergo thing, but the main game with Alexios (you can also play as Kassandra), was super fascinating. The story itself and the entire Cult of Kosmos had me constantly wondering who was who. There were many times where I wasn't expecting something to happen. There were characters that I actually felt sad over if they left. The writing in this game is unbelievable.

The writing for Alexios was fantastic. The choices I could make made me feel like I was playing a Fallout game, but have lesser consequences on the world as a whole. The first major decision I made had me regretting it for the rest of the game, but it didn't have that much impact on anything else. There were a couple decisions to make with the cultists that are brought up later, but all I could say is make the best decision you can and don't really worry about the outcome. The writing makes you really decisive in whether to help someone, end their life, or just tell them to go away. With the writing, I really became attached to many of the characters.

Characters like (I'm going to butcher these because I am not looking them up) Barnabos, Heradatos, Phoibe, Markos, etc. were all a ton of fun. I actually expanded their dialogue as much as possible because I just found them interesting. Most of the characters in this game are like that and it really helped me through this insanely long game.

Another thing that helped me is that I visited every question mark this game had to offer. Every camp, cave, legendary animal has been eradicated. Unfortunately I missed a few underwater locations, but they never showed up on my map, so screw it. The main game made the camps fun to discover, find some quest items early, and complete. It was all very satisfying to me. I always do side quests first, so a lot of the times I completed quests before speaking to the characters.

Most of the quests were fun for the main game, but very "go and get this and bring this back". It became frustrating to go back to a fortress to get one item I missed after clearing it out already. That's my fault though for trying to jump ahead. None of the enemies gave me much trouble in the main game and clearing out these bases was just fun. Completing these bases helped me upgrade my character.

Upgrading Alexios is probably my favorite thing about this game. There are so many combinations that I made this guy into an assassin machine. The upgrades to your weapons and armor were super fun to customize and strategize. Although in the end of the main game, I was slicing through everyone regardless of my setup. Playing a certain way though was fun because I launched my assassin skills up and butchered everyone.

The abilities to upgrade was fantastic. It became overwhelming at around level 50 however as even more upgrades open up. It just made the ability points I got from the DLC way more worth it. It was a serious blast upgrading everything and cost very little drachmae to respec

I actually liked sneaking in this and ironically became an assassin. As mentioned early, sneaking in games screws with my anxiety, but not here. Since the enemies were pretty easy to take down, it was more of a strategy. At first, before I started upgrading abilities, storming a fortress was a little anxiety inducing because they could light the pyre for backup. After a while I basically zoomed through. It became a lot more fun, hence why I completed everything.

The combat with the boats was a blast once I upgraded my ship. It's still a little wonky as you can just spam arrows and call it a day. There were a few cultists that you need a boat for, but you could just sink it and still get their items.

If I didn't buy the dlc, I would have had a good time where it ended. The game does an unfortunately great job in making you wonder where it's all going to go though. Even though I bought the dlc earlier on, I was still captivated in the end. I really wanted to know how the story ended. It's a gripe that everything wasn't really "concluded" until the END end, but whatever, I enjoyed the writing.

So, to sum everything up, I'd say this game is worth buying. The quests are fun, although there are a ton of fetch quests, the writing is fantastic and the game mechanics will keep you glued to your display. The DLC is pretty hit or miss, but if you enjoyed the main game story, then you'll probably enjoy that.

The immersion has never been on such grand a scale as it is here.

While the grind to achieve your own godhood can be a tedious affair, it's in this grind that helps prevail an overbearing sense of achievement and fulfillment; physically earning your place amongst the echelons of gods and men, while graciously earning just rewards to help tip the fight ever more in your favor.

Perhaps the series' biggest advancement is the branching narrative; either as Kassandra or Alexios, the story plays to the beat of several emotional moments, centered around family and destiny and finding one's place amongst a world full of gods and monsters. From beautiful beginning to absolutely stunning end (all DLC included), the aptly named Odyssey delivers one of the series most well-rounded stories to date.

The few smudges that tarnish an otherwise beautiful presentation are present in most dialogue sequences, where lip synching isn't quite right and character models can often recycle after awhile, albeit with new hair and clothes. Most dialogue sequences also have a tendency to feel static, a painful reminder of early Mass Effect days where models talk but don't engage as much.

Combat is janky, frequently missing inputs or so laggy that dodging and parrying fails to properly register. The mercenary system is horrible, with bounty hunters often just showing up out of nowhere and able to track you with God-like omnipotence. There's practically no real need or emphasis on being a stealth Assassin in this ASSASSIN'S Creed game. Enemies can spawn under textures and still hit you. Movement is floaty and imprecise. Ship combat is the worst it's ever been. The further you get into the game, the more it turns into grind for the sake of grinding... you can't progress without doing hours upon hours of boring busywork (unless you're willing to open your wallet and throw out real money, which is what Ubisoft wants).

The story is somewhat decent but horribly cliche and very predictable at times. The romance options feel absolutely shoe-horned in. Maybe they intended it to be this way but I could give less than a crap about either Athens OR Sparta -- they both come across as jerks who deserve to lose. The voice overs sound like bad imitation accents. Ubisoft had a great opportunity here to have the characters all actually voiced in Greek with the option for other language subs but, instead, we get guys who sound like they're trying too hard to sound like Greeks speaking English.

Another tiresome checklist game by Ubisoft designed to sell you microtransactions.
Not sure I'm even going to bother finishing it.

But after I've been Leonidas at the battle of Thermopylae, a friend of Sokrates and Hippocrates, after sailing the Mediterranean sea far and wide and climbing dozens of colored statues and decorated temples, I feel like I have been Greek in another life. The main story is very captivating and emotionally immersive. Gameplay is lots of fun, I never get tired of whistling from the bushes and backstab soldiers. So why just 8 and not 10? ROMANCE, this game's Achille's heel. As a heterosexual, romantic woman I found nothing worthy, just a random doctor somewhere that I never met again. Romances are a very important part of videogames for me and it was a huge letdown. The first time I tried AC Odissey I abandoned the game after discovering Brasidas was not an option. Then I played it again hoping in the fan-made stories, but they are awful. I finished the game and loved it regardless, but I'm angry. Expand

The environment is breath taking in its beauty, verity and details. It is almost can it be better. For living world (peoples society and animals) also good, but they can do better in terms of living matters and graphics specially for human. I like how they balance between reality and fecticns in general world story and gameplay. For the open world item there are a lot to discover however the price is almost only a beautiful places like visiting a museum and some times tools. I wish they made more verity awards for the discovery like like special abilities, special tools. Gemplay combat:
A new style in the series and I think it is well done and there is a space for improvement.

    Gameplay Stealth kill:
Good and adding bow style is also nice, but I wish there are will action while preforming stealth kill like in Assassin's creed unity or middle earth shadow of mordor.

    Gameplay parkour :
Good and I like how smooth his movement and climbing any thing easily (maybe a little pit more then required). I think better to be more challenging in doing this parkour and climbing. Also I wish they made better action moves while performing parkour such as Assassin's creed unity.

    The Five level story :
Story acting and scenarios in general are good. However It needs more work. Storey for those who comes before covered well
Current day story and abstergo a covered well. The main story of alexios/kassandra is good but it needs more work to be better.
Historical references and events are covered well. Sub stories in the world of the game are good and some are average.

Quests level system, and upgrading system:
Quest is good some are repeated but it's OK because Gameplay is nice. Level system I think it's fine and never bother me. I didn't required to do side quest for just increasing my level. Upgrades some are good and some are not required and it can be better. In general as most of ubisoft games it's good game that it can be better and I think it deserves 85 rating. I but put 10 to balance, because I know a lot's of unprofessional rating the game low blindly.

    NOT SO GREAT STUFF:
    - ... which can also be exhausting. At first I was playing to visit all the places and unlock _everything_. Eventually I had to take a break from the game because it was so exhausting. Couple of months later I came back to finish the story.
    - The story was good until the very end which was disappointing for me.
    - The concept for the Nation Powers and Conquest battles is great. There's only a huge flaw in conquest battles. In every RPG I always play the sneaky-type characters (and this game is ASSASSINS Creed so you're kinda supposed to..) but upon entering the conquest battle you're immediately forced into combat. This means you're unable to sneak or use majority of your assassin abilities leaving the whole assassin build unviable for these big battles.

But this game retains so little of it. There are beautiful places to visit (Athens, the Parthenon and its Athena statues for example), but damn it is so shallow ! Most of the universe is filled with random crap and places (bandit camps, caves, useless forts, and what not) that are really tedious to visit, not to mention explore.

And to me, it is not even an AC game anymore. This game pretends to be fun by reneging on the premises of the franchise but has just lost itself on its way. What the heck Ubisoft, what have you done of the series !!! Where is the parkour ? More importantly : where are the Assassins to even begin with? Oh yes, I forgot... in a DLC as uninteresting as it is useless, of course !
Back to the main game : the main quest(s) are boring and you can really tell how uninspired the writers have been. They send you from places to places with very little to justify your journey, and there are loads of uninteresting tasks (I would say downright fedex) and that is NOT acceptable in the main path. Damn, at this point, you should make your game shorter, but actually good, because as it is, it is the complete opposite.

The map is huge, that is a fact. It is also a chore to explore. I am halfway through the game, and I am sad to say I will not finish it. I strongly regret my purchase and urge Ubisoft to look back on what makes a (good) AC game.

Levels and XP do not make a game an RPG so forgot about role playing at all. Beyond the choice of characters nothing you do in the game really has any major impact on anything beyond the ending. There is no role playing at all. It is funny to have conversations with some characters after making "critical" decisions just to tell them that it happened one way when it actually happened differently. The game has a plan for your character and there is nothing you can do to change that. Again, this is not an RPG, it just uses "levels" to lock down abilities until later.

Ubi is fond of filling their world with stuff to do. The problem is that after the first couple of islands you've done everything the game has to offer so there is no benefit in continuing. This is the first Creed game where I didn't bother completing each area. The same layouts and set pieces are repeated over and over again. There is no advantage to completing areas beyond equipment (which is lackluster) and XP. You'll get to max level by mid game anyway so there is no reason to grind. So filling the map with stuff doesn't make it more enjoyable.

Greece is boring overall. Unlike Egypt it is just uninspired and dull. I had more fun in almost every other creed environment (except London) over this. It can be as pretty as you want in 4K but a 4K boring picture is still boring. Nothing in the game really grabs your attention like Egypt did.

Side quests are all over the place but they all fall into the same standard "fetch", "kill", "escort" play. They are uninspired and not necessary to complete the game so there is no reason to search for them. The timed quests are infuriating more than fun as well. Many give you 1 day to complete but unless you're going to play for hours on end or stop what you're doing and work on them you likely won't complete them in time. If you do you get "some odd collectible" that you can trade to some "hard to pronounce" NPC for gear that you already probably have better versions of anyway.

Perhaps the biggest complaint against this game is that it is so anti-assassin. In previous games you generally got in trouble if you did evil things like killing civilians. Here you actually have to go this route if you want to clear areas. Evidently in ancient Greece you aren't allowed to go into temples, certain areas of cities or event hunting camps. Every other NPC can though. To mark these areas as cleared you are required to steal from the temples, kill hunters making a living and destroy working class people's lives. You feel more like a thug than a hero. Why Ubi decided these were the best objectives for an area makes no sense.

4K quality aside this is clearly Origins for the next year. Sort of like they did with the early games they are reusing the tools in a new area. However it is already burned out after Origins. This game is just uninspired and dull. Bugs that we used to see in the old games are starting to creep back in like textures popping in and out, getting stuck on stuff and crashes to the home. AI is poor at best just like in previous games.

Finally, the ship system that they try to keep putting in based upon Black Flag continues to be a disaster. If it wasn't for the fact you have to use the ship to get between islands there is no reason to do so. Battles are the same old thing each time irrelevant of target, requires almost no skill and is not very flexible in any way. It is just another mini-game to add to the marketing checklist.

Overall this game is a distraction that fails to meet the high of Origins last year. It isn't a bad game it just seems like Ubi was going to start doing better with the series and the second outing reminds us of the old games all over again. If you just power through the game and ignore most of the mini-games then it is probably worth the money. But spending a lot of time trying to get to 100% completion just seems wasted on this game when there are better games out there.

Story is "present", but difficult to follow at times. At a certain point it just stops altogether and forces you to grind out side missions before you can continue the main game (gotta drive you into that in game store for XP boosters!). The AC story is so convoluted and confusing at this point, I'm not even sure Ubisoft knows what's going on anymore. Something about Atlantis I think.

The typical PC nonsense that Ubisoft is quickly becoming know for is present here but thankfully secondary to the actual game.

Massive open world that will keep completionists busy for a long time and good combat. Your mileage may vary with the story.

So many people are arguing that this is a good game, sure it is, but could you define an ASSASSIN?

Most people think of an assassin as a silent killer. Most assassins don't lead armies, or even large bodies of men, because the role of an assassin is not to be the heavy from TF2. An assassin is a silent, stealthy killer, who strikes without even being seen.

This is an RPG, a complete and awful RPG. If this was called "Ancient Greek Magical Unicorn RPG Simulator", I'd give it a straight 10. I mean, the only reason I'm not giving it a 0 is because of the clear ingenuity of Ubisoft to create a game that puts you severely out of pocket, then comes back around and actually makes your gameplay experience hell unless you pay more money. Now THAT'S a sneaky assassination of my hard earned cash.

Ubisoft makes the same mistakes over and again - employing B-grade idiots who don't know games. They botched the Anno series. They botched the AC series. What's gonna go next. Now, Ubisoft's own fans are trembling, wondering where the next sneak attack comes from. Ah! I get it. That's the real meaning of ASSASSIN'S creed! You sneaky buggers, you just decided to deliver your punchline differently.

Seriously, if you like RPG's you probably already blew like $5,000 on LOL, why spend more on a crappy AC rip-off? Give it up, half the AC gamers are casual, we don't want a grind, we don't want to play some role just so you get a feminist endorsement. History sucks, we get it, but what sucks even more is people like the PR department at Ubi deciding what version of history we get. Really? They market this as realistic? I had more fun reading my old grade 8 ancient history textbook.

I own every AC game, invested much more into the DLC, love it. It was the reason I began parkour and I now enjoy it a lot. But if you want an RPG, just rename it ok, just don't screw the age-old fans. I'm not buying another AC game... period.

And I'm not the only one. My review counts for nothing, Ubisoft is massive, multi billion, why would they care about my $60? I'll tell you why. Because I am just one of many. I Implore you, anyone who reads this, do not surrender a single cent to Ubi. Make them learn the hard way. They clearly haven't learned.

But, at the end of the day, all the people who like RPG games are usually playing a ROLE playing game cause their OWN ROLE, AKA LIFE, is not interesting enough. So even though AC is dead to me, I still have a community and can live AC stunts out in real life. So screw you Ubisoft, I'm going outside. Great job, not only will I not spend money on AC, I've stoped buying your other games.

After all, we vote with our wallets, vote against this or the future for you gamers won't be bright, just extremely expensive.

You're supposed to be the hero that holds the spear of Leonidas, yet I found myself doing quests that made me feel like an errand boy whether it be delivering a letter to someone or rigging a small election. If they had to decrease the number of quests to increase the quality of the quests I would say do that. It's great that the world is so immersive and there is so much to do but I found myself bored of all the errand boy quests. So much so that I couldn't even finish the game. Quest system gets a 3/10. The talent tree and combat feel the same as last year. There are some cool new editions like teleporting to stab someone with a spear from a range. Kinda felt like Shadow of War-esque. 8/10 for combat and talent tree. The armor is pretty cool but I wish there was more customization or more styles. I think a cool way to improve the armor system is to have certain goals that if achieved, cut some of the materials or cost it takes to improve that armor. I found it hard to consistently upgrade the purple or gold tier armor/weapons because it cost so much. It got so bad I sometimes had to use blue tier weapons because I couldn't afford the upgrades. Armor/Weapon system gets a 6/10.

Overall if you're looking for a beautiful game, and you don't mind grinding and doing (A LOT of) errands while you follow a bigger storyline then I'd try the game out. Especially if you love Ancient Greece.

The game play is quick, intuitive and full of action and excitement. I have been a long time Assassin's Creed fan and have played and completed them all except the side scrolling ones and Liberation (played but not completed). Having said that, this game is my favorite in the series. It is a upgraded version of Origins (which is amazing too!). I find myself continually being pulled back to this game and have played it every day with the exceptions of the holidays since launch. I currently am at 140 hours and still have not completed it. However I am going for the 100% so I completely clear areas when I do them.

You can do this game in any order you want once you get a high enough level. The enemies level up with you and that is awesome as it makes all areas the same difficulty. So there are no low level one hit kill enemies (excluding Assassinations once you get your Assassination damage up). The side quests from the boards do get repetitive, but I enjoy them because you get a ton of XP and Drachme ($$) from them and they let you explore areas a little more. This is just part of Ubisofts games and I love it. The unique side quests (Gold “!”on map) are amazing and have their own little stories. Some of them are quite involved and have multiple endings based on your choices. There are even other side quests from random NPCs that are in the woods or other areas while you are just exploring. I also love the tombs where you find the stele and it gives you an ability point. This is a continuation from Origins and they are worth exploring. There are also the return of the history areas which are amazing to read about and find. It is worth going off of the beaten path and exploring.

I have yet to get bored playing this game, and with 140 hours plus whatever it will be once I complete the game I don’t believe that I will be bored. This game also gets updates and new content for free and paid regularly. Since this game has launched there have been some awesome changes. Now you can change the look of your armor and the colors and they keep the same stats. You do not have to have the current item in your inventory to unlock the look either. Once you have looted it you have it unlocked. Also now the level cap is 75 and you get master abilities where you can put up to 20 points into each thing (Sword damage, damage dealt turns into healing, damage to animals, fire etc.) It is amazing!

I got used to the voice actor for Alexios and I like it. He does sound kind of dumb but he is a big muscle ego hero character, and it fits him. I have not played as Kassandra so I cannot say that she is better or not.

As a parent and a person that doesn't have as much time to play at once as I used to the way this game saves is also awesome. It saves right where you left off if you manual save. I mean exactly where you were standing. It helps when you have to stop and save and come back later. My 140 hours are broken up by 30 mins here 2 hours here etc. It helps that this game was made like this.

I give this game a 10/10 because it is amazing, fun to play, the base content of this game is HUGE there is so much to do and with Ubisoft updating it regularly with new content it is even better then I thought. I have only beaten the tutorial of Red Dead Redemption 2 and played some online because this game is so interesting and fun to play and just full of action. It keeps pulling me back. If you read this whole review I hope you found it helpful and if you get the game I hope you enjoy it! I know Ill be playing more and more. Thank you!

Ok, So im a big fan of the assassins creed series and have played all the games through from the original. There are holes in the stories and themes that don't carry through the series but as i game i try not to dwell on this things and just enjoy it for what it is.

Ok, So im a big fan of the assassins creed series and have played all the games through from the original. There are holes in the stories and themes that don't carry through the series but as i game i try not to dwell on this things and just enjoy it for what it is.

It is a epic game with stunning visuals, The life and passion that is in the newest game is the best yet as you'd expect. A sprawling landscape, Islands which require boat journeys, An array of locations in keeping with the Greek Theme. Sure the voice acting could improve but for what it is its not difficult to listen to and lets face it no one really buys this game for the dialogue or voice acting, its just a necessity to explain the story.

Now on to my point, Everyone has had problems in the past with the assassins creed control system, If you say otherwise ill call you a liar, Everyones wanted to hop down off of a step but ended up either leaping to far or jumping up onto some close by pots. Or you want to scale down off of a building to avoid the enemy and end up leaping to your death. After a few swears you go back and try again normally with great success. Now with Odyssey i find the combat mechanics and general movement is the worst yet and its seems to be worse when your in combat or close to being in it. The controls feel laboured and slow, Someone turns red and swings a sword, you see them turn red and dodge but the dodge comes too late. I have this problem all the time, It feels at times there is a middle man between my controller and the console itself. Its like I'm explaining to someone what they need to do and they are pressing the buttons, a lot of the time just to late.

The problems don't stop there. i can be making my way fro one location to the next in a straight line, all of a sudden my character will want to jump up on the boxes then to a roof top without you wanting that, Now most of the time it doesn't matter but when your in combat or being chased its infuriating, i Want to run around this building but wait a minute my character has decided to jump on this little brick wall and now won't jump off of it until you press the button to climb down even though its no more then shin height. Ive been climbing up a wall to avoid enemies all of a sudden the character stops as though there is an invisible blockage there, You move your character to the left then back to the right, all of a sudden you can carry on climbing. When I'm running along and just need to hop over a little brick wall it wont do it, i need to press the button to make my character jump, Then within two minutes I'm in a fight dodging around and trying to make some space but now my character will jump up on every ledge and wall and box or anything going, The problem now is it wont get down unless i press the button for it. The mechanics are just so inconsistent it makes the game infuriating.

The next problem is the assassinations. The game is called assassins creed, the clue is in the title, But some many times i cant assassinate people from stealth i can only knock there strength down and have to go into combat with them. So why call it assassins creed? I know you need to level up and use the right armour etc to get your assassins level up but even after this i still cant assassinate people, So you just get pulled into an open fight where more guards come more shields that block your attacks. more archers that pepper you with arrows, people throwing flaming bombs, Then you have citizens that think ill have a go at that and they pick up weapons are start on at you. In the end your too out numbered to take on all of these people so its time to get out of there, But wait a minute yo have no sprint button as Ubisoft have removed that so it should be automatic, but instead of sprinting away fro the danger you make a half hearted plodding jog, The kind of run that you do in a dream, you want to run really fast but as much as you try you cant get that speed you want. As your making this slow run the arrows keep on coming until you turn a corner, but again this all depends if the system will let you hop over those boxes without pressing jump, or whether you can hop down off of that wall without having to tell it thats what you want to do. To me it feels like its been rushed like a lot of games these days its just churned out to bring in the money, the beta test seems to not exist anymore more and the paying public is that very beta test, We have to go online and complain about stuff until Ubisoft think ahhh we'll address that and bring out a patch.

Stealth and hiding. So I'm hiding in a bush i see a guard i jump out and kill him, but wait another guard is just around the corner, no time to hide the body run off and hide in some other bushes. The guard sees the dead body, Now, Hmmmmm where would that guard search the bushes right next to the dead man? NO, The bushes that are about 5 meters away from the dead man? NO, The guard makes his way straight over to

Assassins Creed Odyssey is just like the epic poem but not in verse but in content. This game places you directly into a land of adventure, politics, and family turmoil. This game places you directly into a land of adventure, politics, and family turmoil. I was wonderfully surprised how many things to do there are in this game. Back in 2007 when I first played Assassins Creed I was drawn to the interesting world but was quickly bored with the lack of unique things to do in the game. Now 11 years later that problem is gone.

I am about 37 hours into the game at this point and have not finished it but I cannot put it down. Assassin Creed Odyssey is not perfect in anyway but that’s almost what I like about it. I think of Odyssey like a Jack-of-all-Trades, but a master of none. It’s not the best RPG, it doesn’t have the best stealth, or even good combat. Its story is rather simple and there are only a few characters really worth mentioning. But I like that it has all of these elements and that they work well together.

I do really enjoy the game so far and I plan on getting the platinum trophy on the PS4. That’s a claim for only a few games I own. Assassins Creed Odyssey is really fun to play. And I really love that it gave me a new curse word. Malaka, which I guess, is like calling someone an **** But hell, I will always give a game bonus points for teaching me a new way to curse.

Now there is a pretty big issue I have with Assassins Creed Odyssey. As the name implies the game is about assassinations and stealth. Odyssey has 3 types of combat that break down to melee, bow, and assassinations. Melee and bow are pretty straightforward. They are not that elegant but you can mix the two together to make combat interesting and dynamic.

However, assassinations are a bit lackluster. There are only a few ways to assassinate someone and that is by sneaking up behind them, jumping down from above, or using an assassin’s ability. This can feel a bit repetitive which sucks because it’s really the best way to kill people in the game. Assassinations do so much damage that you can’t avoid it. That brings me to stealth because that is even worse.

The stealth in Assassins Creed Odyssey is literally just crouching in bushes. To become invisible you just crouch. The only additional option that you really have to mix it up is to hide in bushes. Hiding in the bushes make you completely invisible some times even to touch by the enemy. I wish they had added some variety to it like peeking around corners, pulling enemies from windows, etc. Because stealth and assassinations are so strong and easy I find myself just running around crouch stabbing people from enemy to enemy. This quickly feels like I am cheating the game a bit because it’s so simple and powerful.

If you get caught and break stealth then all you really need to do is run away. It’s that simple no matter what happens you can always run away and then re-stealth. There is one exception I found while in a Fort. If found, one of the enemies can light a signal fire which signals other soldiers and that can make it tricky to continue. I actually like this mechanic because it encourages true stealth and not gaming the system. I wish the transition from stealth to combat were harder to disengage. This would make getting caught more dramatic and dangerous.

My last gripe before I move onto a few more things I really like about he game is the climbing. All Assassins Creed games have this problem and I cannot believe it’s still the same old song and dance. The climbing is sporadic and hard to control. I tried to climb into a window for 2 minutes because Alexios (the male main character) kept jumping past it, then aside it, then back over it again. Alexios also will try and climb things while in combat when I didn’t mean it to happen. Yea, I probably suck but this should be a non-issue by now. This series has been out for 11 years!

That being said I really do love this game. The world is vast and the quests are plentiful. It never seems to get too repetitive either. There is just enough story mixed into the side quests to keep me interested without feeling bogged down with information and the progression system keeps me coming back for more. I want to complete some quest I just picked up because it will give me a piece of gear that I want; Or maybe it will put me over the edge in experience so I can get a new ability.

Then there's combat, surprisingly fun and visceral. Controls are the opposite of the clunkyness of RDR2. They feel natural, aiming with a bow is awesome (and doesn't stop after 2 seconds...really Rockstar?)

The Naval game is extremely fun and adds a lot to the game, as mercenaries and Cultists do.

This game would be absolutely perfect had the writing been better. Way too many uninspired fetch quests tarnish the main campaign, which is, in itself, quite ok if not excellent, and create unnecessary feel of repetition.

I am willing to forgive [the microtransaction for EXP & money] because it was on me to make that choice in the end. I could have bucked up and cleared out every single icon on the map to take the game nice and slow. But, be that as it may, I cannot stop playing this game.

The story is nice, not one that will leave an impact, but a few tears were shed. I heavily disliked the mercenary system. I would find myself with a bounty and be attacked when I'm trying to do something. Very annoying. However, the best thing about the game is the choices you make and the free content coming. I also think the DLC will be good, considering origins. Expand

Moving on to core game play, combat is fun while requiring a bit of learning to fully get the hang of it. Sailing, while sometimes tedious can be fun once your ship is upgraded, but luckily is used sparingly throughout the story. The story itself isn't incredible, but still interesting enough to keep me interested and involved. And the voice acting, while on average good, can get to points of being downright horrible, but these moments are few and far between. The two protagonists you can choose from, Alexios and Kassandra, both have the same story, but it seems Kassandra is better acted than Alexios, from the two playthroughs I have made. The gear system is an improvement over that of Origins, giving you full control on how you want t build your character, along with the skill trees. The trees are also much simpler compared to Origins, but only allows you to have so many skills at one time. So while Origins was more complex, you would make more use of all of the skills in that game unlike Odyssey. The world that the game sets you in, Ancient Greece in 431 BC is very in depth and fully realized maintaining a historical accuracy. In conclusion, the game is fun and enjoyable with the introduction of complete RPG options and makes it one of my favorite games of the year. Expand

Grind if you want, or don’t if you’d rather not. It is up to you. Choose your quests. Choose your protagonist.

In my 180 hour (thus far) playthrough as Kassandra with a heavy stealth build, I’ve laughed, rolled my eyes, wondered what brilliant mind comes up with some of these things, and I’ve even cried (once). I’ve regretted some of my decisions and been pleased with others.

As a prequel to the story of the Assassins and the Templars, there is quite a bit of tantalizing information to explore with regards to the Isu/First Civ and Pieces of Eden. The modern day component of the story, while brief, is very compelling.

This is the best game that I’ve played since “The Witcher 3.” I’m taking a full point off of what I would otherwise consider a 10/10 game for the forced enemy level scaling. We should be able to choose to turn it off, if we’re so inclined.

I have seen glimpses of AC elements; Sync points, references to Those Who Came Before (though now referred to as Isu which is annoying), a cult that on the surface may be the beginnings of the Templars, twisted versions of historical figures, and minimal modern day story (so far anyway). Kassandra is a decent main character but there is no hidden blade. Plus because the last game indicates the beginning of the Assassin Order there can be none of that so much earlier in history. Upgrading weapons and armor is a complete pain in the ass. It is a total grind. The skill tree is not horrible but some "abilities" are not worth giving up a token for. The combat is improved, but that happened largely in Origins. Ship warfare is back. So my impression after about 48 hours into gameplay is that a lot of this is rehash combining Black Flag with Origins. This is almost as repetitive as the first game. So many stealth "rooms" of camps or forts where the objectives are repeatedly "Kill the Captain, Kill the Polemunch, Find Treasure, Find (special piece)..." So repetitive. Fetch this, free this character. If it were a Star Wars game there would certainly be Protect/Destroy the Shield Generator missions all over it. The map is huge and the world is beautiful. It doesn't totally suck as many of the problems with earlier games in the series have been fine tuned. I haven't run up the wrong building or a tree the way characters would in earlier AC games, but the repetition is at an all time high. There are more classic AC elements than in Black Flag, but that isn't saying much. This game is a bit of a backslide when compared to Origins, but this used to be an Action Adventure series that is being morphed into an RPG and I really didn't sign up for that. Perhaps cranking one out every year needs to be rethought to keep things fresh and cutting edge. Like I said I'm 48 hours into this game and I am maybe a third of the way through the main story. I intend to finish but another highly anticipated game comes out this week that will take precedent over this because that will truly the most cutting edge game released this year and probably for the next few. You all know what I am talking about. ;) Expand

That game is awesome, I agree that its one of the best in the series, but for me its not better than Origins. The world and the characters are amazing, Sometimes I was having a problems with the animation, but there are bugs and glitches in every game. The story wasn't bad, the grinding system is a bit stupid, but I think Ubisoft will repair it. The armor and weaponary system is great, currently im with the Demigod set with The Wolf's Helmet. I think this game should be nominated for GOTY. Ubisoft did a great job with this game Expand

As a fan of this style of game, I'm really kind of speechless in how Ubisoft was able to produce something like this. Usually, with these kinds of games, there's at least something that's not quite right - either the game starts off rough, or there's filler content, or the characters are bland or awful. There's always something. But Odyssey doesn't miss a single beat and I can't understand how Ubisoft was able to make something so engaging. At the moment I'm playing through with Kassandra, a total dream woman, so I guess the game got off on the right foot immediately with me. It's as if Ubisoft looked at everything that worked in Assassin's Creed: Origins, kept what worked, ditched what didn't, and then added ten tons of awesome. There's so much action and content in this game, I feel like I underpaid (I picked up the standard edition). On the Xbox One X, the game looks outstanding, controls like a dream, and I think it's the first title on the X that justifies the money I paid for it last year. The RPG dial has been turned up this time, Odysey has BioWare style RPG elements with dialogue choices and consequences for player actions - and they work amazing, it doesn't feel like they were just slapped in. I honestly don't know how much more I can say, it's a game that I'm not able to find anything to criticize (at least not yet. I've not played with Alexios). I can't stop playing. Ubisoft, I don't know how you did this, but stay the course and never change.

The story starts out great but peters of toward the end, including the extremely odd decision to make a massively important part to the main, overall story, a bloody side quest half way through the game. It makes absolutely no sense at all to me, especially for a series that desperately needs to find a way to bring the modern day elements that the series has been known for, and is the main plot point that is similar amongst all of the games, to a better spot. There are a ton of good things to go with this game, especially for anyone who played Witcher 3. Mostly because the good things from that game translate over here. The world is absolutely huge and there's tons to do with the Cultists side quest to the Mercenaries stuff here. And I enjoyed the combat system, which has improved upon the Origins massive changes to the series. It's a shame that all of the best stuff at the end of the game requires massive grinding because the main story won't get you to the point where you need to be at for, arguably, the more important things that come after the lackluster ending to that. AC really has developed an identity crisis with these last two games. Especially with this one as there's almost nothing here that relates back to the previous games. With the announcement that there won't be a game in '19 and the next installment will come in 2020, Ubisoft has alot of decisions to make regarding the future of the series. If they continue going down the route they have been with the previous installments, they need to make decisions on how to continue with the series, especially with the modern day elements of the series and whether to even keep them in the game. I'd say that it's time to get rid of it and focus entirely on each games individual setting and how that fits into the overall world. I don't know if I'd recommend this to series veterans looking for a return to form after the big change that Origins was. This game is almost geared more for the series newcomers who don't know much about the long history of the games. Expand

It is a game filled with supreme visuals that beholds your curiosity to venture out in the medieval world. The game does well on the combat part but the problems are repetitive side missions and missions like where you need to hand a thing from one person to another instead of involving some puzzles. First - Beautiful scenery (as usual for UBISOFT). Problem is, that’s about it. Ubisoft have missed the AC mark with this one. Ubisoft have missed the AC mark with this one. Many of the classic AC things are missing: the hidden blades, becoming anonymous in crowds or on benches, no quick, attack from behind assassinations. No hiding in hay wagons (there aren’t any) or in leap of faith leaf/flower piles. By the way, Ubisoft, what’s the point of leap of faith soft landing areas, anyway? You put in a perk (Ability) that lets you jump off anything without getting hurt. Bows are pretty much useless in Odyssey - even on easy mode, it sometimes takes 10-15 fully-charged HEADSHOTS to take an enemy out. So don’t bother getting ther “special arrow” perks - they have no more power than the “standard” arrows you are supplied with at the start of the game. Also, what’s the point of leveling up in this version? You start out on an island with a very low level, but as you level up, the lower-level areas level up automatically so that the fight level is always the same. Finally, there is no real story in this AC release. It takes place in the era of the Peloponnesian War - a war that Athens lost; so why does this game not follow history and have the game’s protagonist aid Sparta in defeating Athens instead of leaving history up to the player? Are we teaching revisionist history here? If you are supposed to choose a side (Athens or Sparta), why are you allowed to attack both factions? Then there’s the “Cult”. Huh? Is this an attempt to put a bunch of bad guys in the game (as if there weren’t enough already: Commanders, Captains, Elite Soldiers, Hi-powered mercenaries, area Faction Leaders and Mythical Beasts). Life is complex enough without a game mimicking the same uncertainty. So we are left with a game where you go from area to area endlessly killing commanders, looting and finding clues to puzzle locations that send you off on more searches. But, when conditions are right (that is; you’ve killed & looted enough in one area, you get to take sides & fight in a battle royale. Many areas have lootable items stuck inside rocks, so they show up when using the finder pulse, but you can’t get to them. I’ve also seen more than one animal or human enemy stuck inside rock, too. In short, Ubisoft has created a beautiful, huge game that lacks two small things: a story line & decent fight physics. The game ends up feeling unfinished and poorly thought out - it feels like just a Ubisoft vehicle to let people run around and thoughtlessly kill things. No sense of a unified group fighting for a cause, just a lone wolf ruffian running around causing havoc. I’ve played every AC game in the series at least once and this one is a sad reflection of the others. Hopefully, Ubisoft will do better with the next one. Expand

I like how you have the choice between 2 characters & to be guided or to explore and discover the world around you. The weapons are, for me at least, hard to work with as I have to keep going back and forth between weaponry to deal the most amount of damage.

The game can be hard at times, even on easy, just because you have got some weapons and the way that the WARRIOR, ASSASSIN & HUNTER damage is managed is not properly explained. Just because a piece of armour protects you better does not mean it is the best for your character.
The armour does not match some times and you have a sword that may do 80 damage and one that does 75 damage, but the 75 damage is the one that is better. Some of it makes less sense but the gameplay is good once that issue is looked past.

Overall I'd say the game is worth paying for, even if you didn't really like Origins which I didn't. The setting is also abit more lively than AC:Origins.

The open world is so pretty :) And the dynamic weather makes the world really immersive.
It does not bring anything truly ground breaking and new to the franchise true, being more an amalgam of game features from previous games, however in some cases existing mechanics are expanded like naval combat, abilities and inventory.
I particularly like Kassandra of the two playable characters, because of her voice acting and her personality.

    The BAD

On the negative side of things I've had a few glaring bugs, some funny, some just down right annoying and a crash or two, which is never cool :(

The story doesn't really make sense, and I don't really like that you have to pause it just to get to the appropriate level to continue. It LITERALLY took me out of the story :/

I don't like the idea of micro-transactions in games that are forced upon you because the game is deliberately being slow.

    The MEH

I don't find the genre shift to RPG bothersome as I myself am a lover of RPG. True, the RPG elements such as dialogue choices don't make much sense lore-wise, but eh, I don't really care.

I didn't care about the mercenary system, ended up spending a lot of my drachmae just to play without the obligatory mercenary tailing me.
