Great game, doesn't deserve the heat. Yes, it has some quirks here and there, but nothing important. The gameplay is AMAZING, I didn't have this fun playing with friends since The Division. If BioWare keeps updating it listening to the community and adding content, it will be a 10.

The core gameplay is fun, the story so far is interesting and I'm having a blast playing with my friends.

The game does have a few problems, primarily loading times and crashes, but I don't agree with others that loot is the problem, frankly I'm glad that picking up loot isn't front and centre while I'm mid-fight and can concentrate on the real at hand.

One thing I've noticed from people criticising the game on social media is that they've never actually played it, they are just echoing the sentiment from the reviews they've read - which quite frankly shock me that they're so low. What's going on with the reviewers to score it so low?

In short, ignore reviews and try the demo yourself before you form an opinion, you will be pleasantly surprised!

The first one I tried was colossus and I just couldn't enjoy it, sadly.. I wish there were more support options and dodge options than just one for colossus.. the shield with B is kind of meh.. If you could make that do some kind of dodge instead.. like an offensive specialized colossus i'd find that a lot more fun.

That being said, the storm is very fun. I love raining down fire/ice/lightning from 30 feet above the battlefield.. it's just very fun.. again though I do wish there were more options for the support seals than just quickening field and that weird frontal shield thing.. but oh well..

some of the characters are pretty lame.. but some are very cool.. so it's fairly moot in that regard.. it's not perfect but it is really fun.. I would suggest this to just about anyone with the patience to deal with the slow pace of the fort tarsis stuff and the multiple load screens.. The game is very fun, once you find the right javelin for your playstyle.

Anthem has an expansive and beautiful environment. One I just wish could be explored without significant difficulty. There is a lot here to be excited about: exciting combat (initially), a seemingly rich lore, and the promise of a BioWare story. But Anthem suffers from the same recent identity crisis that ME:A and DA2. In fact, the similarities are striking. Much like DA2, the story is on rails and lacks much of the emotional investment and expansive effects of you choices that players have come to expect from BioWare. Much like DA2, there are three major shifts in effect on your world to give the illusion that choice matters. Further, combat seems to be the major focus. But as you rise to Grandmaster leveled tasks, tedium takes over and mechanics dissolve as your enemies sponge your abilities. All this would make a title average and is mere commentary on the shift a once amazing studio. But what really kills Anthem is the lack of playability. Free play is hampered by your random placement in the world far from allies. The stat system is convoluted and adjustments to weapons seems to have minimal effects. Crafting is... why is there crafting? It’s useless as it is. And simply changing your load out to experiment to find the best combination of weapons and skills is an exercise in madness that takes an hour rather than a few minutes due to the need to leave the environment just to look at the drops you recieve. Thankfully, I didn’t see or experience the plethora of glitches day 1 players did. But 22 hours in, I’m honestly bored of doing the same “guard this” and “fetch that” actions over and over. In earnest, Anthem has the bones of a great BioWare game with the concept and design. But the desire to steal players away from games like Destiny and The Division forced BioWare away from where it shines. Gone are the characters we wish to spend more time with in dlc or over to hate for a grind that’s ultimately unfulfilling. Expand

Why on earth did Bioware not include a 1080p60 or 1440p60 performance mode on X1X and pro?
This game feels like an outdated last gen title. When do devs understand that 25-30fps is unplayable garbage?
What's the point of having a pristine 4K image running like trash and blur it with ugly motion blur...

This is like theI simply cannot believe the negative reviews for this game. Here's why I gave it a 10: You on here giving it 0's to 4's need to be balanced out. The critic reviewers are far too harsh on it too. This is like the opposite of TLOUS for PS4's ratings, which were for over rated, this may be equally as under rated as that game is over rated. I know I went way off topic in the build up but here is my actual review: This game has some of the best fluid gameplay for an third person shooter, period. This is why I get so confused. The story is not terrible. Allow me to explain why this confuses me: Let's do the obvious comparison, Destiny 2. This game has as good of gameplay as you can get for a first person shooter, let's say we weight the game on: Gameplay combat. Story. End game content. Replay-ability. Gameplay set up mechanics and customization (so abilities, skills, guns, leveling routes, different than combat). Destiny 2 would be equal on story. I'm going to outright say it: They both aren't great on story. 7. Gameplay Anthem would be superior from my point of view, but let's use an average person and call them equal. 9, easily on both of these. End game content: It is over exaggerated how much this game is lacking in end game content. Destiny gets one raid per release and night strikes. You can consider Anthem's strongholds not quite a raid, but beyond a night strike from Destiny. Their legendary contracts are similar to your normal looter like Destiny. Their guns, while there are not as many, is for a reason. They have gun sub groups. I can't tell you how many times I got a useless weapon in Destiny, that existed as a form of having as many possibilities for the sake of it. Anthem is clearly geared toward each weapon having a purpose. There are less subsets. There are clearly more weapons in Destiny. I would say it falls behind but not by much, however, it makes up for this in terms of buffs on even your spells, and many different spells, which Destiny has next to zero options regarding, and I see them as therefore equal. Anthem is lacking in guns. Destiny is lacking in ability customization. Anthem's abilities are absolutely stellar. I cannot emphasize this enough. The way it feels when you create a build with the right weapons, and abilities, is awesome, and there are definitely bad builds for the sake of what you combined in a way you don't get with Destiny, as well as awesome super builds. In light of this, I would give both an 8 or 9 in terms of gameplay mechanics. Now, end game is where Anthem is slightly lacking, but I think it is greatly exaggerated because people were hoping Anthem would be an open world similar to an MMO. It is not. It is smaller than Destiny to some degree, but there are legendary contracts similar to night strikes and other content which I think only makes it slightly behind, and this is close to day one. Destiny was lacking to nearly the same degree. I think you can put this at a 6-7 for Anthem and Destiny at release. I would say more like a 7. Let's say Destiny 2 and Destiny are now an 9 in end game content, for what they are mind you, some people flat won't like the content and that is understandable, for what the game is, but you have to consider that when you write a review. You have to try and make it not really about your preference, as much as possible, and more about what the game is and how it pulls off what it is. Replay-ability therefore takes a slight ding, to say a 7, and I think Destiny 2 right now is probably an 8 and was a 7. This makes it though Destiny 2 presently: 9, 7, 8, 8, 8. Whereas some of those were a bit lower at release. So let's say 9, 7, 7, 7, 8. Anthem is definitely a 9, 7, 6-7, 6-7, and I would argue 9 due to the abilities, but some could say 8. To me this means Anthem plays about like a 7.5 to 8.0 game. Destiny 2 at launch was a 7.5 to 8.0 game. Mind you, you don't take all the scores I mentioned and divide to get an average on how the game feels. That simply doesn't work for games like this, though it ends up close to my final number as it is. I think Anthem makes up for a lot of it's flaws through amazing gameplay. I did simplify this a bit, and didn't even include enemy group types and AI. Destiny 2 and Anthem both have amazing enemy diversity and enemy AI, simply put, they set it up so using your abilities and guns feels good. Anthem it's a matter of how do I drain the shields, and how do I set up combos. This simply feels better than Destiny 2, as those combos then charge up your ultimate. There is more depth in team work as a result. The world is also beautiful, and I didn't include graphics as I don't care. The world is diverse as well, but I care more about gameplay. This game deserves an 7.5 to 8 Expand

I have read articles that hypothesize that during Anthem's development, part of the game was scrapped and re-worked. I don't know how true that is but it sure does feel like it. Anthem doesn't know whether it want's to give you a compelling narrative or immersive gameplay, and it ends up doing neither particularly well. Maybe if Bioware's name wasn't on it, Anthem would have done a lot better but I gotta be honest I expected WAY better than this from BioWare even after the Andromeda debacle. Though Anthem may be worth picking up in a year or two I cant really recommend it at this point. Right now it's just a reminder that the BioWare I knew and loved is far removed from it's legendary status. I hope I'm wrong. Expand

If someone reviews a game poorly with one sentence, you should ignore them. If you wont' review a game openly and with some substance, you shouldn't bother. The game is simply a lot of fun and great potential in the future just as Fallout 76 has. I reference that because both titles get a lot of the same hate. Players complaining about the story amaze me. At worst, you have to actually do that thing called reading. Remember RPG's back in the day? You read your story basically. Here you do have some NPC's to drive it, in addition to codex entries as with any Bioware title. Too much whining and I'm convinced its a generational issue.

Cons: Yes, you have load screens that can be annoying. Drifting too far away from your party also pings you to catch up and if you do not, then load screen. There is some repetition, but hello, it's still an RFP shooter. Grinding is normal.

The game is a blast, at least try it from a friends place, rent it, whatever. Just give it a shot. Bioware will build upon it, patch it etc. I'm tired of the "they released an unfinished game" rhetoric. Study into the business side. Games get larger and more complex all the time. All the testing in the world wont' rule some issues out, so yes, you have to be a test of sorts sometimes. Games have been $60 bucks for a long time, so quit crying about that. Pick a Javelin and suit up!

But what worries me is how BORING and repetitive the missions are.. every mission combat fight is done on the ground! They didnt take advantage of all the open sky and all the flying javolins that could have some epic sky fights! The bosses are recycled over again making you fight them multiple times instead of giving you something new. They also give you difficulty options that significantly change the experience and challenge of the game. If you want a game that doesn't reward skill and that becomes over run with unskilled players go play fortnite, COD, or any other FPS where the player base is predominantly teenagers and young children. I have been waiting for years for a game that actually feels challenging and really requires solid grinding. The play between classes truly feels different unlike other games that Anthem is being compared to. I remember being hyped for Destiny to be this amazing open world experience that had deep story telling, in general what I had come to expect from a Bungie game, only to be completely crushed by the empty lifeless shell that we got. With Anthem, all of the things that the devs promised they delivered on. This game isn't perfect, but I have NEVER seen a more responsive studio to the criticisms (so far, EA might end up killing this game) and they are attempting to correct the areas where there are issues. Ironically, a lot of the negative reviews are coming from Destiny fan boys, Destiny 1 and 2 are complete trash compared to what they promised to deliver on and I would never spend any money on another Destiny game. People that are complaining that Ft. Tarsis feel small or empty are obviously not paying attention to the lore of the game (a small hint is that Ft Tarsis isn't a major population hub in this world, it is a frontier outpost).

There is definitely some room for improvement and balance tweaks, but the game is not the horrible broken mess that people are making it out to be.

The story has a great deal of depth within it and this depth meant that I very rarely got bored with the story during my time with the game. I found the world in which the game took place in to be very unique and the enemies you have to face during your journey are also unique as well. Flying and traversing was very fluid and satisfying and the controls worked really well remaining tight and responsive at all times. When played with friends the gameplay truly shines and defeating the very balanced AI in a group always gives you a great sense of achievement. Technically the game still suffers with a few hiccups on occasion and these can be a little annoying from time to time. In terms of content I would definitely like to see more because I can see it getting a little repetitive after a short while. At E3 there were a number of game’s that really caught my interest along with many others and Anthem was at the top of most of our lists. So, I was eager to get time with this game, and while it isn’t the perfect experience, and in some ways I did want a little more. Anthem provides gameplay that’s not only thrilling but also fun as well. I’m pleased to say that both the visuals and sound design are fantastic delivering immersive action in all areas, despite reminding me a great deal of Destiny and the grind associated with it. The presentation side of the game also makes the story stand out considerably and this meant that I very rarely lost interest in the story. In terms of the gameplay the flying and combat elements feel very fluid and satisfying and the world in which you can use these different elements in is very unique. You will however have to deal with a few technical issues along the way though and some of these issues were irritating. I was also a little disappointed with the amount of content available but thankfully I was able to overlook that thanks to the glorious and fulfilled action when playing with friends. Even though it has a few imperfections I still think Anthem is going to be a game that continues to grow as we see patches and future content (DLC), because the core idea is very good and with a few improvements it will be a much better game overall. I've enjoyed the game style. I feel that the story is lacking. Bioware has really declined in their writing. I feel like it's mostly because of EA forcing the rushed release. You can see by Bioware's development roadmap the game is probably only 1/4 of the way finished. Sad that publishers are ruining games. I'm giving it a 6/10 hoping that it gets better.

Beautiful environments, and really fun gameplay. Really enjoying picking this up in the evenings. Finding the gameplay surprisingly dynamic - unlike destiny, the classes (Javelin types) actually matter.
Also the lore and world building is pretty cool, it feels like something new. Still working through story content and looking forward to the releases planned.

The bad: yes, load times, the funky first person / third person viewing from exploring to the fort, never really felt like I got into the NPC's. A few had neat stories but that was about it. Don't expect a rich story or deep characters, expect fun content and good visuals. My rating of a six is based largely on the fact that I found this game to be next to unplayable on Xbox One. I have played through about half the main story and though a few extra expeditions. Probably a total of 10 hours. For the first seven hours I used the in-game match-making. Then I played a couple of expeditions with my son, then I ran a few solo. I have never encountered a single bug (I play on Xbox One). Never had my life mysteriously drained and never experienced any lag nor reduced frame-rate. I have no idea what all the complaining is about.

Finally, the load screens are no longer than Destiny.

The story is shallow feeling. If you are expecting an old-school Bioware game, look elsewhere. Bioware died before ME,A was released. For that kind of experience your should go play something from Obsidian or CD Projekt RED. Bioware is now a political soapbox for EA to stand on.

The game is fun, however. Don't judge it on your memories of what the studio used to be. Judge it on its entertainment value.

Now I know most of you are running for your down votes right now, in which case to hell with ya. But if you're like me and enjoyed Mass Effects 3 Multiplayer and want to see what it can do on a grand and beautiful scale, this game will be a lot of fun. Exploration shows these massive vaults and imposing locked doors, and I can't wait to see what these will be filled with in the coming months. On the technical front: there are still some loading bugs, I had one just the other night. But as far as optimization goes, the game looks and run great on a base Xbox One. I have had very few loss of frames and even fewer graphical glitches. The controls are satisfying, the gun play is dynamic, and the world is just fun to be in. Give it an honest shot, be patient with it, and try the game without the urge to hate it and you may just enjoy yourself. When I play Anthem, I get the same feelings and experiences I had when I played Phantasy Star Online on the Sega Dreamcast. It has been fun to play with others online and work through a decent story. Where this game shines, in my opinion, is how good the game feels to play. The controls, the fights, the customization, and the graphics come together in a great package that I am very happy with. I look forward to the dynamic content that will be coming in the future and will continue to customize my Javelin and try out the various play styles that are a part of the four different Javelins available in the game. I suspect I will get well over 100 hours of gameplay from Anthem and for a $60 game, that is a good return on investment. Honestly my only real complaint are some of the load times; however, they are not as long as other reviewers are making them out to be.

Good job Bioware! I am a big fan of this game and I am sure there are many out there that feel the same. We are the silent majority on social media, but I am sure server data will paint a different story for you! Keep up the good work!

Bioware has managed to create something truly novel here. This is a world that reminds of Pandora from Avatar. The javalins allow to cruise around an iron man suit custom tailored to your preferences. There is a town unique to you that will evolve and change as you interact with it's inhabitants. And most importantly, you get to engage in unique combat where you fly, hover, nuke, freeze, torch, bullet storm, and smash your enemies while utilizing the environment to your advantage. If you have some friends to play with, this game goes up to a whole new level.

I think a lot of gamers are spoiled entitled children who are looking for a game to give them ultimate purpose and fulfillment in life. They will never be satisfied. If you are hitting long load times, go get an SSD and a good fast network connection. Problem solved!

If you want to explore a truly unique experience, check this game out, and really take the time to explore and look around. You will discover that a lot of blood, sweat, and love went into this thing. If this is the opening chapter, I can't wait for what is next. Great game Bioware!

A beautiful concept that needs some tuning. The rough start of this game isn't very different from many others online games, be it Destiny or Division. All the ingredients are there, Bioware just needs to adjust the recipe and bake it a little more in some aspects. When that's done it will be a great game.

I develop software (simulations and serious games) and understand the sheer amount of work and effort that goes into the process. It used to be that hard work and quality content would pay off. If your game was good- it sold. None of this herd-mentality hatred of a company overshadowing the actual content.

Yet the entire industry is now governed by, what i have come to refer to as, the "self-entitled spoiled gamer". They are the ones who dont give a damn about any of that. And they're killing the industry.

They dont care that hundreds, or even thousands, of people have dedicated countless hours of their lives to developing a game.

They dont care that their unneccessarily harsh and cruel reviews will deter others from buying. Which, in turn, results in less sales.

Those less sales mean less revenue for the developer. This results in less risk taking for new ideas by investors and ultimately in unemployment of devs and closure of studios.

These are the same people who then complain about the industry being flooded with "clones" and lack of originality. They complain about game droughts, and 'big bads' like EA and Activision.

Ive got new for you keyboard critics- the problem is you. And you're everywhere. On social media, on website such as this, and even 'official reviewers' (looking at you IGN).

Anthem isn't a bad game. Contrary to many of what these reviewers will have you believe- its actually pretty fun. The visuals are breathtaking, and there are moments where i will just stop and admire the world. You wouldn't be forgiven for thinking it was a snippet from James Cameron's latest Avatar flick.

The gameplay is solid, and flying around in your javelin is everything i wanted after seeing the first ironman film.

Sure, it needs some work in certain areas (such as certain interfaces being unintuitive- i shouldn't need to google "how do i swap between weapons").

Overall a solid game, and i look forward to seeing how the game world evolves. At a minimum Anthem deserves a score in the high 70's.

I have experienced 30 hours of what Anthem has to offer, and decided to take the time to write this article despite the mostly negative press that the game has received thus far.

To begin with, the game is not perfect, as the notorious loading screens are common knowledge at this point. I will say that I play on an standard X Box One, and have not had any loading screens greater then 25 seconds, but I understand that others may have had different experiences. i will also say, that I was disappointed that a proper Bioware story, complete with decisions was not implemented into the game. I will also note that during the early access period I did run into a few bugs, but not enough to deter me from playing missions, strongholds, or freeplay.

That being said, much of what makes this game shine is often ignored. Many of the review sites fail to mention the how rewarding exploration is throughout the world of anthem. Every time I go out into freeplay, I find myself exploring a new area, hidden cavern, or just finding landscapes that makes it obvious that the developers showed this game love. I can say without reservation that with the mobility that the javelins offer, and verticality of Anthem's design allows a sense of liberation as you transverse the amazon like biome.

As stated earlier the story was not a traditional Bioware story, but the developers were also forthright about this factor. I will say that I disagree with the decision to tone down its own game DNA, as this factor could of made Anthem stand out when compared to other games in the looter shooter genre. The story was not as bad as many will have depicted however, and honestly I believe that the birth of the harsh criticism originates from the high expectations that were formulated through stories of games past. Though not directly associated to the story, the conversations between NPCs, in Fort Tarsis do help provide a foundation for the world of Anthem, but would of benefitted from more Bioware DNA within the environment.

This could not be called a Anthem review without mentioning the combat. I can say without reservation that this is the most addictive combat out of any looter shooter that I have ever experience. Combat makes you feel powerful, when you learn how to utilize the strengths of your javelin, and punishes you, if you play as if a firearm is your only choose of DPS. It forces you to utilize your mobility, and the primer and detonator system is something that I believe was executed well. It is worth noting however that gun design should have been conducted better in my opinion. Marksman rifles look a lot like assault rifles, and the variation between each weapon in that sub-type only differ in coloration.

So is Anthem good? Yes, I believe that it is a game that can easily be enjoyed, and is capable of being a game that many hours are spent on. I believe that theres so much potential for the future, but also many things that must be panned out. I will point out that it is disappointing that this IP has met with so much disdain this early in launch, especially since a lot of it is unwarranted to a degree. I know that reviews are mainly subjective, but this game is no way worst then Destiny 2, as I cannot even return to it after playing Anthem. The combat and world alone is enough to have you addicted. I know that my opinion is not the popular opinion as of now, but Anthem is an IP that I plan on sticking as it grows and evolves. I hope you find this review helpful.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted to like this game. Let’s go over where I like it. The story seems good and I like the cut scenes and characters. But this post apocalyptic style of story telling where something really bad happened and there’s these Freelancers. It’s just been over saturated. Anthem is no different then the traveler and the freelancers are essentially guardians. And I do t know what this legacy and legend talk is but who cares? I want to play a game and bringing those up just seems like marketing used since ME3. And the post apocalyptic stuff is so over played. Destiny, Division, now Anthem. I mean come on. Conversation trees are just a binary option with no substance and we know they can do better. The suites are neat idea and the flight is awesome, It looks great. The customization of colors is on point. I am just not a fan of the chicken legs. Personal preference. Not a biggy. However, if you spent time on warframe or Destiny there seems to be a mix of these styles. I don’t see why a suit needs a cape or why firearms need to be covered in cloth or rags. Now finally the game itself. I am constantly getting disconnected. The suits overheat way too fast and I mean way too fast. The game is constantly crashing and during the load up of missions I have overlays of the animation where I suite up next to another render of my suites crotch. I am so sick and tired of falling for this EA trap of having this unfinished they’ll patch it later nonsense. The game seems barren and the enemies I’ve been facing? I just want to play the crab people song from South Park. It’s really too bad they ruined Mass Effect. Can you imagine if they made an MMO for that? They could have even introduced this flying system. It would have been sweet. But they burned that to the ground. Now we have this new story that copies Destiny, Warframe, and a post apocalyptic setting with some mysterious anthem. The only thing this game has going for it is it actually has a story with cut scenes and substance unlike Destiny. But outside of that, it’s another game that feels like it’s jnfinished or stripped and they’re going to take youbover the coals via DLC. I’m not a fan. Expand

Boring and repetitive. every map looks the same. the loading screens are ridiculous. also the 4 tomb thing to progress is straight terrible that made me quit and then the story is short and expect to do the same content a bunch of times on higher skill levels

I am in love with its jaw-dropping visuals, its super-crispy gunplay and a great cast of characters that complement a great experience. This game is getting a lot of hate right now and (imo) it's just not justified.

People need to remember that the purpose of this game is not a single player RPG experience. Bioware made a multiplayer game with RPG elements, not an RPG game. I have to say that while there are bugs, there are always bugs in large games like this. Some games have fan made patches to fix bugs that the devs never even bothered fixing, while Bioware has been incredibly responsive and attentive to their player base. They changed the entire mission UI based on user feedback. That kind of response is incredible. Wait a month if you're concerned about bugs, and buy the game then. Even with the fixes that still need to be made though, Anthem is fun, fast paced, interesting, and fluid. It gives my brother and me a way to hang out when neither of us feel like leaving the house. It is exactly what Bioware always intended it to be: a cooperative, fun game with great NPCs, a well written but expandable story line, and a living world that changes day to day. Expand

Yes the game has some bugs. But the gameplay is really enjoyable and I love walking between missions through the town and talk to all the NPCs and reading the documents I find. While this may not be a traditional game by Bioware, the game in its own right is a fantastic looter shooter. Smooth controls, great movement system and teamwork is super fun. It's not perfect, but it's off to a great start.

If you forget the fact that Bioware made this game, no one would know any better and this game would receive better criticism, plain and simple.

I will give this Xbox One review as a what it feels like on a regular Xbox One, not the Xbox One X since I do not have one. That being said, I also own the game on PC and I will regurgitate this review with a PC review as well. I will also say that having a decent PC gives me a solid benchmark to compare this game on separate platforms. That being said, I also own the game on PC and I will regurgitate this review with a PC review as well. I will also say that having a decent PC gives me a solid benchmark to compare this game on separate platforms. (GTX 1080, AMD Ryzen 7 1700X, 16 GB ram and NVM SSD support with a 144hz 27in monitor)

I will start with the hardware performance. The Xbox version does not give you a very smooth rendered version of the game and the textures and resolution are rough around the edges, this definitely affect the ability to be immersed in the world and also affects the ability to shoot targets without a good zoom factor. It has a "butter over too much toast" feel, like it was made for next-gen. I felt this way about Red Dead Redemption 2, where i saw minor details in the graphics start to fail. The PC version on ultra settings is incredible, graphics wise.

Now onto the game its self. The story is not compelling as you find a lack of a convincing villain. There is no build-up for the backstory when the Dominion are introduced. Remember Saren in Mass Effect? He was the villain we could all understand right off the bat. He was the best of the SPECTRE, he betrayed his cause, he was given a character that felt, spoke, and reasoned, and he was a lead/foreshadow to the Reaper threat, the ultimate bad guys. All we know about Dr. Harkin is that he led the dominion before the Heart of Rage, looked like a creepy clown out of costume, and probably died. Up front, that is my main gripe about Anthem's story line. This is the first way it is like the first Destiny game. The second way is the lore. The Anthem (similar to the Traveler) is a fulcrum of creation technology that factions fight to control. The Freelancers (Guardians) are essentially mercenary loyalists living in what appears to be the last stronghold for the good guys, running around with limited organization or control. They tend to ally with the Sentinels, which aren't explained well off the bat. You quickly realize, like in Destiny, you aren't really a faction but a group of people that have common goals. Furthermore, we don't know who is in charge, but because we accept contracts to get things done, one can only conclude its rich people. This doesn't add up to a good plot because the protagonist has conflicting motivators and the means of saving the world must rely on people paying him to do so. Destiny had a much better foundation with this. Guardians were intrinsically motivated because if the Traveler died, they died, if the Traveler died, humanity died. They existed and fought to protect the people, that was their motivation. Freelancers fight for money with a competing motivator to save people. This is a GREAT concept in an RPG shooter because you can choose your path and write your own story. Unfortunately, those choices are severely limited here and Anthem leaves us feeling like Bioware refused to commit fully to RPG shooter.

Gameplay. The gameplay felt a little off. First, the flight mechanics were suppose to set this game apart. However, they really just become your sparrow from Destiny. Oh, and they overheat, which makes no sense at all. The people can make a high tech robot suit but can't figureout how to cool off a flying object a fraction of the size of airplanes, something we have mastered in real life. This leaves me having to dive to cool while flying and do a kind of up-down path to maintain temperature. Annoying. In the beginning, you can't fly and shoot or attack at the same time, you can only hover and shoot, which is bad because you have no cover. It's essentially useless and after the first few minutes leaves you feeling disappointed. The shooter mechanics have a very Mass Effect feel and there is a problem with that. This game is trying to achieve a "Destiny" like effect. Low story content, addicting loot structure. It fails the same way The Division failed, in my opinion. Without being close up in first person, you cannot see your gun very well. This makes it difficult to feel like one gun is different from the next. Destiny made us feel like every gun was special, like a new puppy. I always felt like Mass Effect shooter mechanics were simplified but i didn't mind because of the RPG factor. Now I mind. Next, there is the way bad guys move. They don't seem to have any real grace or complexity. They feel stiff. Furthermore, its hard to tell if I am fighting bad guys, or wild animals at the beginning.

Ok, the good things. The game's graphics are breathtaking on PC. The gameplay feels fluid with keyboard and mouse. It almost makes up for the rest of the game being mediocre. This makes me wonder how much Bioware spent testing on consoles. The Javelin (mechsuits) are pretty cool and the customization factor makes you feel like a mech warrior without the clunkiness of a Mech Warrior.

I have put some 25 hours into this game already, unlocked 3 of 4 javelins, and I can say that I had a blast with all of them. Very different strategy with every suit, love it. Had only 1 disconnection from server, and that was after the mission, when game failed to load after mission screen. Nothing was lost, I just didn't saw summaries of that mission. The story is very good considering this is looter shooter which will get free upgrades as the game develops. I had my doubts for freeplay, but I found that too to be very fun. And that is the main thing, The game is simply very fun to play, you play some missions, then you thinker with javelin's equipment (and look), then you chat a bit with residents of fort tharsis, then you read a little about fluff (sort like mass effect stuff), then you roam a bit in freeplay collecting mats and searching for world quests, then you do some stronghold, then you ty different javelin for a bit, then you will just like to do some testing on your build so you put difficulty to normal in order to have relaxed experience, and so on... Yes, it doesn't have 100 hours of animation like mass effect, but this is not that game. Yes, there are loading screens, but I don't get the hate train here. You really cannot wait for 20 seconds (Yes, I measured it) for mission to load? and 10 seconds to turn back to fort? and, what, 3 seconds for javelin to load (by the way when youre loading out of javelin back to fort its not 10 sec, its 2-3 sec)? And for the love of god, please don't put character in center of screen, if I wanted to play destiny, I would buy that game. All in all, can't speak for PC version, but if you have xbox, this game is must buy. Expand

I love bioware i loved playing mass effect 1, 2 & 3 as well as dragon age origins and DA inquisition the story of these characters that you come to love, like or hate. One of many things that annoy me while playing is no matter how hard i try, i just don't care about the characters or the story no matter how cool i find the idea of the javelins, the anthem of creation etc but also most of the characters seem emotionless, one cutscene was the annoying as **** owen talking about his parents pretty much abandoning him as a child and his tone of voice has anger and sadness but his face just looks like he is talking about the weather or he will raise his eyebrow and look surprised.

As stated above i played on pc (solo) and kinda hated playing this game on my own i had friends on xbox one get the game so i got it as well thinking like with destiny 1 and 2 playing with friends make improve my expeirience. It didn't. The game is a buggy mess and the day 7 patch did not help with loading or the bugs i have encountered. I want to like this game but my god it is hard, i am a sucker for mechs and mech suits etc but anthem is just not a great game. Thankfully there is no season pass **** so maybe ill continue playing it next year if or when they drop some more content for it.

I can understand the story without having to look online, the levels don't feel like arenas or set pieces because it's fully realized and opened. The shooting feels great and when you punch it to fly you really feel it in both the sound and in the feel of the controller. People wanted story in their looter shooters and you have it all over the place here. It's not Star Wars but it is better than its rivals were at start. The graphics are amazing as well and so is the sound. There is also more than 4 or 5 type of looking enemies and the bosses aren't just bigger versions of regular enemies. I can't think of one game at start that was this polished. We may all think there was one because of Nostalgia but there wasn't. Most popular shooters now that will be named i.e. Warframe or Destiny took a long time to find their footing if they found it at all. The microtransactions aren't in your face either. On Warframe you see advertisements on your ship and in Destiny they have a literal microtransaction stall called Eververse. I don't know what people were expecting for a first outing but it seems like a lot and way more than reasonable, or maybe it's the hatred for EA which I can sympathize with too but comparing this game to every other game of its type at their beginning nothing else comes close. My negatives though are I wish there was more customization of your character outside of the suit and I wish you could see them too in 3rd person. I wish the loading times were quicker but they're still relatively the same as others but besides that nothing horribly bad in it to make me delete it and its not even close to the worst game I have ever played. Hopefully it survives the un-just criticism for a stand alone product that has been out less than a month. Expand

How EA has managed to take a once proud and reliable game developer and turn them into this machine that puts out unfinished, dull, technical messes is a sad commentary on the industry. Bioware truly sold their soul to the devil when they sold out to Electronic Arts.

The story isn't as rich as Bioware's single player games but it's certainly engaging, and the characters voice acting has some great moments.

The combat is lots of fun and really great and still made better, being a live service game they are improving it constantly server side and client side as well. Yes the game has some problems and bugs and the amount of loading screens is really bad (but improving all the time) but they fixed a lot of them already. There is no story tree you can just chose from two options I hope they enrich that and the facial animation is between oke and great depending on the npc and the writing leaves a bit to be desired so I really hope they put some more effort in that.

The road map looks promising and they seem to listen and communicate pretty good with the community.

The cut scenes are mind blowing and the open world is really really well made, it's really very beautifull, the flying is improved a lot since the VIP Demo. The combo's are fun and the shooting is really great and you really has to use some tactics and skill, sometimes there are to much effects on the screen so that you lose focus. The weapons could use some more difference between each other, but there are some really great sniper rifles.

I put a lot of hours into the game, the world and game play is really great so you just want to keep playing it.

Overwall the game from playing for a long period feels mediocre and bland. The good points are just a small thing compared to how bad the game is as a whole from my experience with it.

It was really boring. Constantly felt like getting up to do something else. Boss fights suck and the story is dull. This game has no reward

I started with Anthem during the VIP demo and since then things have been looking up! It's true the story is a bit threadbare...just enough to carry you between missions full of shooting, shocking and blowing up every enemy in your path. The gameplay is the major selling point by far and it does not dissapoint. Quick, frantic gameplay with a multitude of ways to ruin your enemy's day. Also the flying is one probably the most satisfying jetpack style flight I've ever seen in any game.
As for the graphics; they're top notch. Playing on Xbox I haven't had issues with the framerate drops PC players currently seem to be experiencing. Also the rubberbanding I experienced on occassion during the VIP Demo has disssapeared. At this moment the game is running smoothly and I can only imagine it improve.
Speaking of improvements, Bioware has been active on reddit, listening to players in regards to bugs and suggestions. There are definitely some quality of life improvements that we need, from a stat screen to a ping system in free play. While some fixes may take longer than others, there is no doubt Bioware is listening.
The bottom line, if you like the idea of a loot shooter with a Diablo style loot system and mechanized jetpack armors...this game is for you. If you're here for a deep story and traditional Bioware RPG you may want to pass.

A complete waste of time for everybody involved, both Bioware and the players. If you want to play a bad version of Destiny, go and play Destiny. I just hope that this failure doesn't kill Bioware and they can get back to making Dragon Age and Mass Effect games.

So far it's really good. Not sure what people were complaining about with the loading screens. They took Destiny's formula and made it better. Combat is fun and fluid. Takes some time to get used to ut the controls are nice. It's definitely unique and fresh with the fairly different controls.

I think so people aren't accustomed to the way a lot of games are now. They still think it's

I think so people aren't accustomed to the way a lot of games are now. They still think it's all GTA 5 where you can go anywhere and there are random events everywhere. Nowadays you have a hub you go back to and get your missions, loot up, etc. Get used to it.

The Ranger class is dope, lots of heavy artillery. The story is actually somewhat engaging, although the NPC's are pretty flat. They prtend to talk and mouth words, but they don't say anything at all. No fake conversation, just silence. Occasionally some will have a pre-programmed dialogue. This is a stark contrast to Metro: Exodus, where every person has 5 minutes of dialogue you can listen to.

Overall I'm liking it a lot. Don't listen to the haters, find out for yourself. So far it's worth it.

I'm f*cking shocked how different the game always looks after they show it first on E3. Numbers are flying when you shoot..graphics only half what was showed or promised....performance constantly below 30 fps on Xbox One X..didn't even feel satisfied while killing enemies...too much effects on screen etc. 20 minutes demo and uninstalled forever.

Good - Excellent gameplay, story, world building and a reasonable amount of content at release.

Bad - Too many loading screens.

Game is fun now and should only get better over time.

The experience I had with Anthem is simply shocking. It's as if someone looked at Destiny and said "We should make a game like that", but completely failed to understand what made Destiny great to play.

There are only 2 positive things about Anthem: it looks gorgeous and flying feels right. Everything else is way below par. Shooting is aweful, first time user experience is simply

The UI is a mess. it feels ancient, from the 90s, with no lessons learned by recent game releases. It's cumbersome, un-intuitive and confusing.

All in all this game is just a mess. Avoid full price purchase, wait for game pass or similar

Technically there's nothing wrong with Anthem... The core gameplay is smooth, the graphics are nice... and the sound is quality.

If I had to come up with an analogy of what playing Athem is like... it's like going out for a night on the town with someone you don't knows friends. Sure you can hit all the nice places, have the nice food, do the fun things... but all the while something

That's what's holding Anthem back, it's a collection of very great ideas, some of which are executed fantastically.. but it feels hollow... somehow incomplete.

Anthem is a AAA game, from production to gameplay to writing to acting... But the experience doesn't feel right...

The worst video game I've played, bugs, repetitive, downgraded, empty, without sense, etc, etc, etc,.

Anthem as a game is getting so much hate because they're tied to EA, and MTX are not even bad, optional, and cosmetic only. The graphics are insane and incredibly well done. The gameplay feels better than any other game I've played. Menu design and loot is broken, but it should be fixed in the future, and the patch fixed a ton of **** that you all are complaining about. In comparison with even the base Destiny 2 – let alone that game expanded by all its excellent DLC – Anthem feels not so much unfinished as barely started. It contains some good ideas which it fails to develop, and some of its basic pillars, such as the insistence on fourplayer co-op, somehow convey the impression of being tacked on rather than fundamental. And even with the huge early patch, it’s still glitchy – we had to play three quarters of a 45-minute Stronghold without sound, for example, which was disconcerting.

As a multiplayer game, the combat here is fun, but heading back to Fort Tarsis to grab the next quest becomes a chore; I found myself fast-forwarding as much dialogue as possible so I could get back into battle. There are likable characters in Anthem if you pay attention, and Bioware’s depth of story does shine if you’re interested. You won’t always be interested, though.

A game with a lot of potential that was released before it was ready.
