Aggelos is a love letter to fans of classic side-scrolling platformers. Despite a few glaring issues, the game achieves greatness through staying true to its formula, through not holding back on its difficulty, and through maintaining a pace that effortlessly keeps things interesting and unique. Whilst this may not be the best adventure of its kind, it’s certainly high up there, and in the midst of so many retro-inspired releases, that’s a feat in itself.

Inspired by the Wonder Boy franchise, Aggelos features a very enjoyable experience and a modern gameplay but truly lacks of creativity.

With a Vast nearly load free map to explore, and an ever growing set of skills to master, Aggelos keeps you moving. The monsters you face all pose their own challenge, and make you think about how you're going to time your moves. The games Bosses are all challenging, and will put your skills to the test. Navigation into new areas will be granted as you learn your skills, and magic. The art style feels very Mega-Man, with sprites and animations very fitting to the style, with sound effects to match. You will spend hours navigating the world, and unlocking all of it's secrets, while utilizing everything you learn along the way. The temple of the Woodpecker will test all of the skills you've learned along the way, and teach you new ways to use them at the same time. A sign at the start of the temple warns you before hand that it is hard, the sign is accurate! Storybird Games made a great game, and if you like the retro plat-former, Metroidvania feel, this game should be on your list. Full Review »
