This was a 3D platformer in the Mario 64 vein which I was able to beat in about 15 or so hours getting the minimum hourglasses.

Pros: - I thought the structure and presentation were good - Fun characters and boss battles Cons: - The platforming and traversal was just average. Felt like I was running into walls and wasn't flowing well through the levels. - When I wanted to end

    Cons:
    - The platforming and traversal was just average. Felt like I was running into walls and wasn't flowing well through the levels.
    - When I wanted to end the game I got the required hourglasses but hidden behind that was that apparently you had to have certain hats. This was not obvious and I had to go grind for yarn which was annoying. I had bought the most expensive hat not knowing this and was frustrated.
    - Loading times were too long

It's a cute game, plenty of fun and a great way to spend some time. While I do like it, there are also some issues that keep it from being an objectively fantastic game. A lot of the time you don't have control over the camera, but with some effort you can adjust. The second is that the platforming, while usually good, occasionally gets wonky. Simple jumps become nearly impossible and accuracy takes a nose dive. I would recommend giving it a try, but don't expect a masterpiece. It's a game meant for fun and only fun. Expand

An honest and charming attempt to reinvigorate the 3D platformer genre.

On one hand, I applaud the passion that developer Gears for Breakfast approached this project with, and admire their enthusiasm. However, on the other hand, I have to be honest and admit that I didn’t have much fun with this game. Although A Hat in Time was crafted with love, and has some good moments, it’s overwhelming and obtuse, and lacks cohesion, polish and great gameplay.

A Hat in Time is the kind of game you don't see very often anymore: an incredible fun-for-all-ages romp that isn't exclusive to Nintendo. It's ceaseless dedication to making every moment feel fresh and exciting is admirable – even if a few technical hiccups slipped through the cracks. It's an incredibly fun platformer that never stops surprising. It's the kind of game that just makes you happy. Heck, the game is making me smile right now, and all I'm doing is writing its review.
