A Hat in Time is a game that I’ve heard quite a lot of good things about so I was actually quite looking forward to it, and thankfully it was worth the wait. They have managed to deliver in a number of areas and that’s evident from the get go. The levels in the game can be quite brilliant at times and you can tell that they’ve had a lot of effort put into them. The world in which the levels take place in is fantastic and the game encourages you to explore a lot, and when exploring you will come across loads of little secrets which is great. Whilst the exploring is great you will however struggle with the camera from time to time and it will frustrate you as well, but thankfully it’s only a small problem in the grand scheme of things. The most important thing of a 3D platformer is obviously the platforming elements and thankfully everything has been done well here, which is both a relief and very much appreciated. Another thing the game gets right is that is has a decent amount of replayability and I didn’t get bored very often because there are a number of different abilities for you to collect and use. The presentation side of the game is absolutely perfect in my opinion. Visually the game manages to be both retro and modern at the same time and the same can also be said about the soundtrack, which is great. At the end of the day A Hat in Time is a fantastic addition to the 3D platforming genre and in a lot of ways it reminds me of why I like the genre so much. It does a great job of being fun and enticing throughout and the mechanics it needs to get right it does get right. I only have two real gripes with the game so it shows you that it gets most of the things right, and this makes A Hat in Time one of my favourite games I’ve played this year, so without a doubt this game gets a massive thumbs up from me. I'm confused on why the critics are taking the piss out of the voice acting. Anyway, this is a legend ready to unfold in your eyes, something charming, and welcoming to the human eye. And the Hat Kid is so damn adorable...

As a platforming fan, I began 2017 with high hopes. The trio of A Hat In Time, Yooka-Laylee and Super Mario Odyssey promised to make it one for the ages. The trio of A Hat In Time, Yooka-Laylee and Super Mario Odyssey promised to make it one for the ages. Unsurprisingly, the promise was mostly undelivered. Super Mario Odyssey, whilst technically proficient and occasionally fun, abandoned any pretence of being anything but a set of Nintendo-red training wheels to hook a new generation of participation trophy receivers on Nintendo's IPs, providing hardly the barest fraction of actual platforming. Far more egregious, Yooka-Laylee was published as a barely-playable mess, and whilst subsequent patches have blunted the technical issues (the general lacklustre gameplay precludes my using 'resolved'), unfortunately charm and soulfulness cannot be transmitted via updates.

I was prepared for a hat trick of crushing disappointment when I somewhat reluctantly put down money for A Hat In Time. It is with grateful relief that I can say, at last, that the money was well-spent. This game is everything that I looked for in platforming of 2017. It demanded all of the time and precision that SMO forewent, and it delivered all of the charm and evolution of platforming collectathon mechanics that I expected and utterly failed to receive from Yooka Laylee. The only faults I find are a general roughness to the art design and implementation, which is nonetheless effective, and an occasional annoyance with the loading times undoubtedly caused through the use of the now-archaic UE3 engine; it's my hope that a future remaster will smooth over both of these issues and vault the game from good to superb. In the meantime, even as it stands, A Hat In Time delivers in spades on its core promise of being a cute-as-heck, fantastic platformer that is worth every penny of reasonable purchase price.

I made a Metacritic account just so I could make this review. This game is perhaps one of the last surviving members of the 3D platformer genre . . . that likely means nothing, so I'll say this: if you feel the urge to retire from the endless slew of cash cow FPS games and return to the older days of plot, adventure and puzzles, pick this game up. For $30, you get one big nostalgia trip, and it was personally thrilling for me. It might as well be the third installment in the Super Mario Galaxy saga. The game came from nothing . . . it was crowdfunded on Kickstarter and thus is nothing close to a "triple A title" like Call of Duty or Zelda games, but it feels like it is! There are times where the camera is oddly positioned, but that's nothing terrible(makes it more challenging and fun, really) since I 100% the game without finding a single glitch or restart-prompting error. One or two voices at the end were missing, but the classic text on the screen covered well.

In short, A Hat in Time is beautiful(did I mention the soundtrack is unbelievable?(Electro Swing)), well-executed and worth playing. Don't let picky critics hack it apart . . . jump in for yourself!

While it is clearly inspired by the Nintendo Mario games (of the 3D type) it is a pretty good game. What it does better than Nintendo is give a little better character to ..characters speaking English.

Posiblemente el mejor de su genero actualmente. Un simpatiquísimo plataformas 3D con muchísima exploración lleno de color y de situaciones muy variopintas. Una solución perfecta a la necesidad de un plataformas en toda regla.

This was a 3D platformer in the Mario 64 vein which I was able to beat in about 15 or so hours getting the minimum hourglasses.

Pros: - I thought the structure and presentation were good - Fun characters and boss battles Cons: - The platforming and traversal was just average. Felt like I was running into walls and wasn't flowing well through the levels. - When I wanted to end

    - When I wanted to end the game I got the required hourglasses but hidden behind that was that apparently you had to have certain hats. This was not obvious and I had to go grind for yarn which was annoying. I had bought the most expensive hat not knowing this and was frustrated.
    - Loading times were too long

The game is also not too long or hard, which can make it a fun game for all ages. The music is also incredible and memorable, with plenty of great tunes. Graphics and camera quality can be issues at times, but these are little more than small problems. The Xbox One edition does have some flaws such as the lack of DLC and the Completionist's Hat not appearing, but overall this game is incredible and one of my favourites of all time! Expand

An honest and charming attempt to reinvigorate the 3D platformer genre.

On one hand, I applaud the passion that developer Gears for Breakfast approached this project with, and admire their enthusiasm. However, on the other hand, I have to be honest and admit that I didn’t have much fun with this game. Although A Hat in Time was crafted with love, and has some good moments, it’s overwhelming and obtuse, and lacks cohesion, polish and great gameplay.

A Hat in Time is the kind of game you don't see very often anymore: an incredible fun-for-all-ages romp that isn't exclusive to Nintendo. It's ceaseless dedication to making every moment feel fresh and exciting is admirable – even if a few technical hiccups slipped through the cracks. It's an incredibly fun platformer that never stops surprising. It's the kind of game that just makes you happy. Heck, the game is making me smile right now, and all I'm doing is writing its review.
