As for what was actually made, Transformers: War for Cybertron is a solid but unremarkable effort that occasionally shows glimpses of its true potential. It provides a complete, if a little too short, package of modes and features in a genuinely interesting setting. It just needed a little more spark.
-
The best Transformers game for ages - but it's still a one-dimensional shooter, lacking guile.
-
It's not subtle or clever, but this unashamedly uncomplicated shooter is one of the best of the year.
-
Superb application of the Transformers license and story help, for once, make the gameplay issues in Transformers: War for Cybertron worth rolling through.
-
If the goal was indeed to create a game that could appeal even to the rawest Transformers newbies, then High Moon has succeeded.
-
As it stands, it's a polished outing for a much-loved pile of robots, and though it costs twice as much as the second film on Blu-Ray, it's about seven times as enjoyable. The maths speaks for itself.
-
The well-realized license in this third-person shooter can hide the myriad problems for only so long.
-
Transformers : War for Cybertron is not an unforgettable action game, but it manages to stay above average, even more when compared to the previous Transformers games.
-
Gameblog.frTransformers: War for Cybertron is a solid TPS, although a quite straightforward one if you play it alone. Going multiplayer gives it added depth, since using and mixing powers in teamplay make it more interesting to play. Alas, its lack of inspiration in terms of level design, its annoying frame rate issues, improvable story and french voice acting, as well as its average production values and too few multiplayer maps are a disappointment. However, for absolute fans of the franchise, it remains one of if not the best adaptation of the show, giving back their pride to Autobots and Decepticons!

X-ONE Magazine UKA great license but a hugely impressive game. War For Cybertron is best avoided by shooter fans and serious gamers - it's casual gaming through-and-through. [Issue#61, p.90]
-
games(TM)An experience that simply plays well. Well, but not excellent, that is. [Issue#99, p.118]
-
It's plodding and lacking in imagination, and it's mostly the great cut-scenes that will get you through. It's certainly not 'rip out your optics' bad - but Transformers: War For Cybertron hasn't got the touch either.
-
Its campaign is only worth seeing through if you're extremely curious to see how it ties into some of the other Transformers lore out there, and the multiplayer is solid, if perhaps a bit uninspired. It's a good diversion that'll keep you engaged for a few days, but don't go in expecting long-term excitement.
-
Overall the game feels a little half baked to me, and not something I'd suggest to anyone outside of the hardcore Transformer fan base.
-
Fans of Transformers - real fans, the people with the cartoon series and die-cast toys - will probably get a huge kick out of the story behind Transformers. They might even get enough out of it to overlook the insipid level design, borrowed gameplay elements and sloppy AI.
-
Edge MagazineThis is a whisper of what the IP has to offer videogames rather than a realisation, and there's no disguise in the universe that can hide that. [Aug 2010, p.94]
