With the amazing dark look, the awesome soundtrack and the superb narration by Patrick Stewart, War of the Worlds is one of the best XBLA games I have played in a while. And, for only 800 MS points, you would be silly to pass up this gem.

If you are looking for a game with plenty of hours game-play, great story progressing content and gorgeous to the eye then look no further than this. The measly price you pay is worth every second you play of the game, even the times where the game is driving you insane from trying to figure out where and what to do next.

Even if you ordinarily shy away from a daunting challenge, give this one a shot. As difficult as War of the Worlds is to conquer, it's also more than satisfying enough to be worth the struggle.

The War of the Worlds may not tell the most original story of the year, but it's a stylish action game full of exciting moments you won't soon forget. Sadly there are a few control issues and frustrating puzzles that hurt the overall pacing. However, even with these minor complaints, The War of the Worlds is a great adventure that is well worth your ten dollars!

A long and varied adventure that is beautifully designed.

The War of the Worlds winds up being a competent action/platform game in the end, and a fun one for fans of the genre. The debatably antiquated gameplay style and mechanics might be a turn-off for some, but those who enjoy those trappings should be satisfied.

It's an excellent story, but once you've played it once there's not much to do besides go back and do it again, trying not to die for the game's most challenging achievements.

If you never read the original novel now you have the best opportunity to learn the story in more interactive form. Be ready find some serious challenge though! [Feb 2012]

H.G. Wells fantastic science fiction novel is interpreted as a retro-feeling action platformer reminiscent of Flashback or Another World, with fantastic voice acting by Patrick Stewart and music by the legendary Chris Huelsbeck. It draws upon its inspirations quite well, and delivers a moody, atmospheric experience.

This game has all the right pieces to be one of the top tier games on XBLA, but an incredibly frustrating control scheme holds it back.

The War of the Worlds is absolutely not for everyone – those with high blood pressure or weak wills need not apply - but if you fondly remember the games name-checked above, or if you enjoyed Limbo but want something less artsy, less creepy, and less spider-y, this is certainly worth a shot. I'm not going to pretend it doesn't have issues or that it didn't drive me half-mad with frustration, but equally I'm not going to hide the fact that I had a lot of fun dying my way through a ruined London.

War of the Worlds breaks my heart, because on one hand it has this nice dark setting and melts your face with Patrick Steward's awesome voice acting, yet its gameplay is so frustrating that you tend to toss your controller aside.

The War of the Worlds offers an interesting take on the old sci-fi classic. Great voice work and wonderful music combines perfectly with the 50's look to create a beautiful presentation. The game's mechanics however are very inaccurate and as the game is pretty difficult and unforgiving, what could be a great experience is ultimately ruined by frustration.

I want to recommend War of the Worlds to everyone, I want to slap a high score on it and call it a classic, but I can't because it made me too damn angry. When it works it's a wonderful and challenging experience, hence the still reasonable score, but it too often doesn't.

The presentation is the game's highlight while the gameplay, unfortunately, doesn't meet that same degree.

The War of The Worlds is a stylish looking and sounding game that tells a story any H.G. Wells fan would be satisfied with. Sadly, the game is brought down by poor controls and design choices, making it extremely difficult for the wrong reasons.

In style, class, and atmosphere, The War of the Worlds nails it. There are exciting setpieces where you run from gigantic walkers as buildings collapse and heat rays vaporize civilians around you, and strangely those sections usually aren't difficult or plagued with control and checkpoint problems. It's sad to say that those sections make up the minority of the game. The rest is composed of dying repeatedly due to poor controls, poor visibility, cheap enemy ambushes, and ambiguous clues as to where you can hide safely, and then randomly getting screwed by checkpoints.

The War of the Worlds adapts H.G. Wells' classic novel into a visually appealing platformer that unfortunately falls short in a number of key areas.

This adaptation of the best-seller, narrated perfectly by Patrick Stewart, but the visuals and animations are clearly sub-par. For a platformer reminiscent of Limbo, it's particularly bad, since it makes the levels hard to read, and the poor gameplay doesn't help at all, making it frustratingly difficult. Too many shortcomings for a title that could have been quite nice, too bad.

The game is affected by several problems that make gameplay repetitive, through a hard level design and a flawed control. The atmosphere is great, but the experience is not.

War of the Worlds hurts its notable successes with its drive to make you fail, and it proves to be a hugely disappointing test of tolerance.

The War of the Worlds has the trappings of a solid game. But because it's such a frustrating chore to play, in the end it only proved extremely effective at stressing me out with little reward. Good games just don't do that.

For someone interested in videogame design or history, The War of the Worlds is an interesting case study. But is it fun? Dear god, no. Just, no.

A visually stunning, dreadfully fussy and cruelly unsatisfying hardcore game - one that does very little indeed to reward the near-infinite levels of patience required to get anywhere close to the value of your time or money.

Say what you will about the 2005 Spielberg film adaptation turning the invasion literature into an explosive action romp, it probably would have been a better starting point for the game adaptation. Then again, maybe this is a project that should never have got off the ground to begin with; after all, some pages are better left unturned.

Incredible atmosphere & amazing graphics combine with Patrick Stewart's voiceover to give a very strong atmosphere which is very cinematic & involving. You really want to find out what's coming next.

Unfortunately the game has massive problems which is such a shame as it really does look fantastic & plays like an interactive 2D platform game movie in the best possible way.

The problems I am talking about are as follows:

    1: Unforgiving ridiculously difficult gameplay.
2: Constantly dying & only progressing through trial & error as the objectives are not clear at all.
3: Poor checkpoint placement so you have to backtrack a lot on certain sections.
4: Very hard to attain achievements for completing the game without dying make this virtually impossible to ever get all 200GS on. Most players will struggle to get even 50GS for beating it once as the achievements are very poorly written & do not give enough reward to players for beating the game. It should have given all the achievements for beating the game once! let alone without dying!!!
5: Hazard animation timing is too severe/critical so this contributes to you dying a lot.
    6: Pixel perfect unresponsive controls.

Such a shame as I can see no way this can be fixed or tweaked with any patching. Casual players will avoid as its too time consuming to replay the same section over & over for hours just because the game does not make it clear how you can progress.

If it did not have these problems & was an easy to play/progress game with more checkpoints/gameplay options (there are no difficulty selections) then I would give it 10/10 its really a stunning looking atmopheric game which is faithful to the original HG Wells source material & without a doubt an alltime great 2D platformer if only it had enough QA testing these problems would have been ironed out before release. As it stands its a tragic release as the game promises so much but the unforgiving gameplay, poorly conceived checkpoints/achievements & unresponsive pixel perfect controls cause nothing but frustration to the player & add nothing to the experience only remove you from the game as you start to question why on earth they did not make the game much easier & more about experiencing the story/presentation instead of fighting against the poorly tested finished product.
