Why an 8 and not a 9 or 10? the benchmark for me (and many others) is Batman: Arkham City, and where this game doesn't meet it is the complete lack of options for side missions of any depth, or more importantly medal campaigns or brawls, its story or nothing, and that doesnt make sense, and seems a little phoned in as far as effort, since the game is set up for it. one could argue that with the open world you get endless play but that is a couple small repitive options. really is a 7.5 overall but spidey gets a .5 bump in my book. only 14 main missions and riddled with enemies that block super powers hindering freeplay in the city. The other side missions are mostly uninspired and take less than 30 seconds to complete and have about 5 different variants. Character customization / upgrades are all limited to skills doing more damage nothing more.
A very poor attempt at Prototype/Infamous fails at everything it does.

Not even one bit as bad as they all say, but on the other hand, it is a let-down. Technically inferior to the previous game, this tried to push for something better with more ideas but lots of them just don't work. All in all one of the better Spider-Man games, better story, great villains, but needed a lot of polishing...

It is a very good game. Exceeded my expectations, even with medium graphics and simple gameplay, has an interesting plot and can guarantee hours of fun. The latest games spiderman this is the best.

I don't understand everyone's gripes with this game. The game is well made. Very well made. Swinging around the open world is an absolute joy. You can spend hours and hours of this game just swinging around. The movement is something Beenox got perfect for this game. The combat is fun and fluid, and Spider-Man flips around and has witty quips during it, making it feel like Spider-Man. AndI don't understand everyone's gripes with this game. The game is well made. The combat is fun and fluid, and Spider-Man flips around and has witty quips during it, making it feel like Spider-Man. And while it is a bit clunky at times, those times are rare and it is easy to forgive them. There is a huge range of suits that will have an effect on the way you play the game in subtle ways, and they can all be levelled up to boost certain stats so you can select the suit that goes with the way you play. There are a lot of bosses which will make Spider-Man fans go "Hey! I know you!" It is excellent fan service, and each boss is unique and brings back the beloved 'classic boss battle.' Stealth sections are well put together and are more open than the previous game, so you can choose a path you want to take enemies out. It does require some thinking to take out all the enemies without getting caught, and I really like that. My only problems with the game come in the forms of the voice acting and the Hero or Menace system, and that's where it loses two points. The voice acting is sub-standard, and in my opinion doesn't do Spider-Man justice. The Hero or Menace system works like this: by performing heroic actions around the city you will raise your heroic level, which will increase the rate you level up suits, and in turn give a boost to the stats the suit you're wearing, making you a better hero, which is the way you should be. By ignoring side-missions and petty crime your heroic level will go down, until you finally descend into the menace bar. The higher your menace level, the more penalties you are hit with and the harder the in-game task force will try to hunt you down. On paper it sounds pretty cool, but it is executed poorly, and it gets to s stage where it's nigh on impossible to stop all the crimes going on in the city. I understand Beenox added the system to really put you into the hero experience and make you feel like you are the hero, but they just didn't pull it off. Despite these two flaws, the game stands out to me and is undeniably hours upon hours of fun. You definitely won't be disappointed with this game. Expand

If you like Spider-man it is probably worth a rental, but overall it is a pretty mediocre experience. The game is short and repetitive and most fights often feel like a glorified button masher. Web slinging doesn't feel near as fun as I had hoped. Something about it just feels slow and stiff, not much improvement from a game like Ultimate Spider-Man that is nearly 10 years old now.

Web slinging doesn't feel near as fun as I had hoped. Something about it just feels slow and stiff, not much improvement from a game like Ultimate Spider-Man that is nearly 10 years old now.

At fist glance the city looks very impressive, it is a huge area with a very accurate layout represented of the real life Manhattan along with all of the expected landmarks. But as you get down to street level and are swinging through the streets every block of the city pretty much feels the same as the last. Doesn't make exploring very fun.

The graphics in general aren't anything overly impressive, especially the cut scenes that involve webbing any of the bad guys. It looks like the web is just floating around whatever its on instead of actually sticking to it.

The story is pretty boring and cheesy with one "twist" that any Spider-Man fan will expect coming from a mile away. The attempts to tie in scenes from the new movie into some of the levels are also ridiculously corny and poorly done. Harry Osborn's voice actor is also incapable of anger, during what should be one of the most heated exchanges in the game he sounds like nothing more than a man that is just ever so slightly agitated.

Overall the game itself is probably a 5/10 but I enjoy the character of Spider-Man enough that it bumps it up to a 6 for me. It extremely short with only 14 missions to play through and can be beat in a weekend pretty easily. There are collectibles throughout the city but nothing about them makes me really want to go out and find t hem all. Rent it, don't buy it unless you can get an amazing deal on it.

I bought the game on the 360 and the graphics were rather impressive, Spiderman looking the best in the game. The combat is taken straight from the batman arkham games (like the first game) the only difference is that you can preform signature moves at certain times which causes Spiderman to flip around and use his webs to finish the enemy off, these moves look great and were cool to see but there are only around 6 of them in the entire game. The web swinging mechanics are vastly improved from the first game with webs connecting to buildings and using both the left and right trigger to change directions easier.
But the game has so many problems, there are only 14 main missions in the game and there is little to no story at all, the game crams in around 8 villains all of which are easy to beat and present no challenge at all, even the final boss is simple and anticlimactic. The game gave itself some freedom when it decided not to follow the movies storyline, but instead it just threw in a pointless uninteresting plot that had no effort put into it. Only one side quest in the game is actually quite fun and requires some stealth skill in order to complete them, all the others however are completely forgettable and take no time at all to complete. The game doesn't have any characters that are memorable or interesting other than Spiderman, Kraven the Hunter is given the role of a mentor but he isn't developed any more than that. The only likable character (excluding Spiderman) is Stan Lee, he runs the comic book store which allows you to view action figures, comics or play the arcade machine which is just facing waves of enemies in a row. In the game you can play as Peter Parker, this is completely pointless as it is just used to ask certain characters some questions or take a few photos. Also there is no Gwen Stacy in the game, she was in the first one but is absent from this game for an unexplained reason, they don't even say her name and she has practically disappeared from existence. WHY!! The biggest complaint about the game is the hero or menace system, events occur all over the map and if you don't do them then you will become a menace and get the taskforce to try and take you down, this is one of the stupidest systems in any game to date. You are basically unable to just swing around the city at you leisure you are forced into doing the same repetitive missions over and over again or you will be attacked no matter where you go.

Overall the game is a disappointment, it isn't the worst ever game or even the worst Spiderman game ever but it just needs more, there needs to be more missions, more characters development and there needs to be an actual story. At its core elements such as fighting and web swinging the game can be very entertaining and fun to play but with all its problems it becomes a painfully average game with only echoes of its previous games greatness.
However I don't believe that the game was ruined because of lack of interest, but because of time restrictions. The game only had around 1 year in development as it is needed to be released at the same time as the film. The game should of been given more time to be made and only then will it of been the game that should of been released. It isn't the Spiderman game that I was hoping for and I can only hope that The Amazing Spiderman 3 will be the game that we've been waiting for.

The only thing I really loved is the freedom which isn't something new to Spider-Man games, story was okay but the idea of carnage was good. Ending boss fight wasn't as satisfying as I thought it would be. I didn't like Kraven. I don't think the game would be different if Kraven wasn't in it. But I love Spider-Man so I will give it a positive(ish) score.

The Amazing Spider-man draws too much direct inspiration from the Batman: Arkham series, implements it too unevenly to warrant much praise.
