The fact that you can change the graphics instantly is just plain cool, and creates a real "how'd they do that?" feeling, but both the angled view and the 2D "arcade" camera -- where you view the game through a tiny arcade cabinet monitor -- are novelties.

R-Type Dimension is the best adaptation ever made to the next-gen of a classic shoot'em up. It is a comprehensive title, full of details for both old and new players, and very fun. Its difficulty is huge, but its game options are so customizable and accessible that will please both veterans and newcomers.

It's a mindless button masher and that is all it needs to be, that's what makes it so fun.
  4. A brilliant shooter from when it was originally out and even better now with a nice new set of effects.

If you fondly remember the R-Types of old and have been itching to feel that sense of intense difficulty again on your console, then you’d be crazy not to download this one.
  6. A tough but lovely recreation of two of the greatest orthodox shoot-'em-ups ever made.
  7. The gameplay is still as addictive as ever, as you tear a hole through the Bydo Empire using power-ups such as reflective lasers and missiles. The difficulty is incredibly high (bullets come at you from every direction), but the newly added stage select and Infinity options relieve some frustration.
  8. R-Type journeys into the third dimensions but a lack of control and high entry fee spoils the trip.
  9. For a 22-year-old game it stands up remarkably well, but it's a shame that a few omissions prevent R-Type Dimensions from being all it could have been.
  10. A feature-rich shooter that can appeal to people with either a passing or a serious interest in the genre.
  11. R-Type and R-Type II, two classics coin-ops, are together in R-Type Dimensions. Two graphics modes: original 2-D and all new 3-D in high definition. Game modes can be played as single player or multiplayer missions, either locally or over Xbox LIVE. A good retro pack with reminds the quality of this Shoot'em Up.
  12. Nevertheless, it’s one of the best retro retreads you can find on XBLA and Tozai should be applauded for doing the original game justice without trying to get too clever with it.
  13. A lovely recreation of two of the greatest shoot-'em-ups.
  14. Despite the relatively high difficulty level, this is a prime example of old-school gaming at its best.

All up Dimensions is a solid remake of an all-time classic, and is much more convenient than plugging in old systems to give the game a blasting. If you like R-Type, or shooters, then this game is a must.
  16. R-Type Dimensions is a worthy attempt in catering to series fans, shooter fans, and retro fans at the same time. It’s easy to get into, but quite hard to master.
  17. You can’t ignore that R-Type Dimensions offers another taste of classic gaming, with some enhancements to make it more attractive and contemporary, and that’s playable from the comfort of the living-room couch.
  18. SouthEnd Interactive have put some effort into this "remake" and it supports both purists and newcomers who wish to check out a classic arcade game. The visuals are good, considering the age of this game and the gameplay still works.
  19. You might fail to see what all the fuss is about if you're not a shmup historian, but for the faithful it's a pleasure to rediscover R-Type with friends and flash. [Feb 2009, p.81]
  20. Retro fans will no doubt rejoice, as will gamers who love the pad breaking frustration of a challenge.
  21. R-Type Dimensions is a good adaption with very few changes. This game is definitely able to guarantee some hours of entertainment.
  22. I have to admit that while I enjoyed the game for around an hour, the length of time it took to beat both games, and the little bit of fun with multiplayer I cannot recommend this game to anyone but those with points to burn and if they are die hard R-Type fans, unless you have a few friends who own the game and are into playing Co-op then it is a great game to purchase.
  23. R-Type Dimensions is a faithful albeit somewhat pricey update of the coin-op classic with few surprises.
  24. R-Type has always been a title for the tough guys. But with the new Infinite mode it's now possible for every gamer to view the ending credits. The though guys won't use the new game mode of course and are only interested in breaking the high scores. And if this is the case with you then you'll have no problem in buying R-Type. Even with the somewhat high price tag.
  25. So really it depends on whether you’re willing to fight through the classic mode to try and justify your purchase. Those that do will enjoy R-Type Dimensions despite it’s horrendous difficulty level.
  26. The great virtue of R-Type Dimensions is that it has both the classic and austere as permissive and compatible to most casual players, looking for the nostalgia of the arcade rooms at the expense of a "shmup" fast and easily rewarding if you like.
  27. This is a collection of games, containing the first and second installments of R-Type. These games can still hold their own, even by today's standards, but they're certainly not for the casual gamer. The ability to switch between 2D and 3D is a nice option, but apart from that nuance these games are still as excruciatingly tough as they were back in the day.

At long last, a Live Arcade release that is actually a videogame rather than some stupid parlour game your granny wouldn't swap her pen and newspaper for. [Issue#43, p.115]
  29. R-Type Dimensions is an attempt to appeal to both retro gamers and newcomers. It's an unmitigated success when it comes to the former, and an unmitigated disaster for the latter.

You can get the same games cheaper elsewhere, so why bother? [Apr 2009, p.82]
  31. R-Type Dimensions is pretty expensive for such an old game with such short levels, which makes this a game best suited to side-scrolling fanatics or people who just have money to burn.

R-Type Dimensions allows me to do both with unlimited lives! You can still play the the right way if you're hardcore, but these new additions make the game much more accessible. Optional graphic upgrades, local or online co-op and the ability to replay any stage as much as you want round out the collection. This is R-Type perfected. Full Review »

R Type dimensions includes R Type and R Type 2. The final bosses of both games are nearly impossible and you would be lucky to make it past the first couple levels. However there's a sense of satisfaction from making it farther than you did last time. Also, you can play it cooperatively, and can toggle infinite lives for the faint of heart. Full Review »
