I waited two months to buy this game because I knew it would released with countless flaws on last-gen. I waited for an update to be announced. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor takes inspiration from Batman Arkham's combat mechanics and Assassin's Creed's parkour mechanics and molds them into a beautifully crafted masterpiece. The nemesis system is also a very impressive concept, as it makes the world feel much more dynamic and alive.
The game was surprisingly violent compared to other works based on the Tolkien universe. The combat is excellent, and you feel quite satisfied and powerful seeing a bunch of Orcs flee in horror as you brutalize their captain before their eyes.
Needles to say, if you haven't played this game, you are seriously missing out on an awesome experience.

The gameplay is very reminiscent of the Batman Arkham series and there are lots of side quests to keep you busy besides the main revenge plotline. The nemesis system is less than next gen, but still a great new game mechanic. I would now highly recommend this game on the xbox 360 despite ten second game load times after menu access. I wish there were some leaderboard features and dlc that the next gen systems are getting, but the core gameplay is great and for an open world game does not disappoint after the recent title update. Don't judge this book by its cover...behind the sub-par graphics, the overly long loading times, texture glitches, and inconsistent frame rate lies a game with an engrossing story to tell set in a world of memorable, three dimensional characters, fully realized role-play mechanics, and exciting, brutal combat in a game that not only pays homage to the Middle Earth setting, but adds to it.Don't judge this book by its cover...behind the sub-par graphics, the overly long loading times, texture glitches, and inconsistent frame rate lies a game with an engrossing story to tell set in a world of memorable, three dimensional characters, fully realized role-play mechanics, and exciting, brutal combat in a game that not only pays homage to the Middle Earth setting, but adds to it.

This game on last generation consoles embodies the idea of substance over style. Whether or not you can enjoy this game on last gen consoles will depend on whether or not you are able to accept the sacrifices the developers made to do so. If you can, then buy it. If you cannot, then don't.

Obviously, the best platform choice for this game is next-generation/pc, but I suspect if you're reading this then it means that simply isn't an option for you at this time. The developers sacrificed the graphics, loading times, draw distance, and the such so that the game play mechanics, (particularly the frenetic pace, scale, and diversity of the combat), could remain largely untouched. In other words, when a sacrifice was required for the sake of performance, the developers chose substance over style; opting to preserve the way it feels rather than the way it looks. This was the right decision.

Hopefully this will give you a good idea of what to expect so that you can decide whether or not you want to hold out until you acquire a next generation console or take the plunge now. I won't lie, this game is hard on the eyes at times and the omnipresent loading is obnoxious at times, but the game is still a ton of fun that I recommend wholeheartedly to anyone who can look past the rough exterior and see the gem underneath.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to begin by giving any reader of use reviews good advice: If someone says they didn't finish the game, ignore their review. If they didn't finish the game, they didn't get into all the things you could do, didn't get the full story, and thus cannot put together any kind of intelligent review. That bit of wisdom aside, on to the review!
Unfortunately, I can understand some people being disenchanted with this title, so I'm going to have to defend the score I'm giving it a little bit. I will not compare it to newer-gen systems because I am reviewing the Xbox360 version of the game. The graphical criticisms are definitely true, this game has more pop up than a frat house at a naked lady party. Talion often looks like spiderman climbing smooth, textureless walls until all the boards and stones and things load, the cutscenes seem to clip short, and one time the cutscene just abruptly ended before the characters even finished their conversation with no input from me. The load times are also horrendous, every time you pause the game you can expect to dedicate at least 45 seconds of your life to getting back to the game and you must pause often to check the map and equip new runes and things. However, when one insists on playing a new game on old hardware, one must accept that technical hiccups come with the territory and some things have to be changed entirely (Looking at you, The Force Unleashed on PS2).
The game itself, like an ugly puppy, does manage to endear itself to the player, however. Talion moves and fights like the love child of Ezio Auditore and Batman. I'm almost 100% certain that he even uses Ezio's running animation from Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood the exact animation. He hangs from ledges like Ezio, leaps onto Uruks like Ezio, and even hides in bushes like a true Assassin or voyeur. When the Uruks come a-knockin' and Talion gets to rockin', he does so with the grace of the Dark Knight holding a sword. The button inputs are the same: X is the kill button, Y counters, and you have this neat little stun thing you can do by pressing B. It adds its own flair by adding automatic combat finishers that change as you level up your abilities. Later on you can take control of Orcs and Uruks and make them into captains and even warchiefs by sending them to kill one another, which is the meat of the game.
Being a Tolkien fan, I found the story to be a fun bit of non-canon. Like the LOTR movies from more than a decade ago, the game revolves around a major character but doesn't necessarily stay completely faithful to the source material. In fact, for the game, they focus on one character (Celebrimbor, the Elf Lord who forged the Rings of Power and the One Ring) who was only really mentioned in passing in Tolkien's work and turn him into a full on anti-hero. It's actually very interesting to see how Celebrimbor and Talion evolve together and to learn of the Elf's true, less than heroic intentions.
So yes, the technical issues are there, but what do you expect from a last-gen console? The gameplay is solid, fun, and challenging, the sense of progression and player choice in the manner of that progression is there, and there's even a decent story in there if you're nerdy enough to look into it. Not to mention that when the game does look good, it looks GOOD. I will say the boss battles were a little disappointing as far as their difficulty, but I can let that slide. The game was never about them, anyway. It's about one man looking for revenge and the ghost who's going to give him the power to claim it whilst also gathering power for himself for his own ends. Just dig in and enjoy.

A few problems with the game is the detail of the graphics. I could tell this game is pushing the processing power just to run on my 360. Loading from menus and many other functions seemed sluggish and took away from the fast paced action I wanted to lose myself in. It seems that as the xbox 360 has aged the games just seem to take that much longer to load. Shadow of Mordor suffers from slow loading and auto-saves that take the enjoyment out of the adventure...but only slightly.

Final Judgment: Worth a trip to gamestop to buy for $20 (the price I paid). Do not expect next gen level graphics or quick load times. Overall I would recommend this game to fans of Darksiders, Batman, and Assassin Creed. The game is fresh and original but shares many of the same elements found in these other games.

The raw gameplay mechanics and so on are just rock solid and I personally really enjoyed them. The nemesis system does seem a little shallow, but is still a lot of fun. (I am only 15 hours into the next gen nemesis system however). The building blocks for this game are solid, really good license to. Just needs polish, more rewards for completing side missions (either discount to upgrade costs or unlocking skins etc) and I am looking forward to DLC / sequel. I will do a XBO review but think an 8 is a shoe in. 7 is a little overly generous for the 360 version but on the assumption you pay 25-20 or less I think most would agree with the logic. Expand

The most common problem with this game is the fact that it was intended as a Next-Gen release, and they ported it down to sell more copies. This becomes relevant in the atrocious load times and the hundreds of texture loading errors. Every time you enter a menu, you have to wait through a 30 second (at least) load time. When you switch menus, another 30 secs. Exiting. 30 seconds. The most tragic thing about this is the fact that you're constantly entering and exiting menus. If you're going to be buying this game, I recommend getting it on a next-gen console, or the PC. Expand

I think this game deserves a better score than the current one... Yeah, it's slow, but I am having a great time completing the secondary missions, getting all the collectibles and following the main plot. I have one complaint, though, it is not original, it's basically a Prototype meets Assassin's Creed in Mordor. I love those video games anyway so it isn't bad for me, I would label that as lazy.

I thought the combat mechanics were definitely intriguing and the world building happening was quite fascinating at times but the world in which the characters inhabit feel bland and uninteresting. The open-world format also lends itself overwhelming paralysis where the player doesn't quite have enough information to know really where to go or what to do. What's worse, it feels so open that you really don't know why you're doing anything in the first place and by the time you do grasp what's going, it's too late to make an informed decision.

Open-world games can absolutely be done well by the beginning of Skyrim for instance, doesn't overwhelm the player with "options" too soon but the more you explore, the more places you can go. It remains focused in the beginning while you're understanding the game and gradually opens the game up to you once you're confident and knowledgeable enough.

This game could've benefited from a more focused approach near the beginning and had a gradual opening as you became more oriented and progressed.

While I had my fair share of gripes, the story isn't bad. It's got great moments and a compelling premise but due to its lack of focus, the power of the story sometimes feels lost.

Shadows of Mordor is not as fluid as Assassins Creed in the ability to control your character, the role-playing elements didn't feel natural and there weren't as many options as I had hoped, and Castlevania's Lord of Shadow combat is better. These are titles that I found myself comparing to Shadows of Mordor, and it's great that they borrow elements from awesome games, but because they didn't take the time to perfect those elements I found myself always remembering how much better the games I compare it to are.

I didn't like the story, I don't like how much emphasis they put on the orc hierarchy though it started off really interesting the effect wore off within a couple hours of gameplay. Shadows of Mordor makes you feel like you can chose orcs to represent you in the chain of command from helping them, but it doesn't truly grant you the freedom to chose to kill Ratbag, or manipulate one of the stronger Uruks. Maybe if the game offered more freedom the orc hierarchy would have been more engaging, but because it lacked that depth it lost its novelty.

This stupid crap is just an excuse to not put boss battles into the game. It seems that everything about this game was done in the quickest and cheapest way possible and that makes it complete and utter garbage.

The game would have been better if the social hierarchy was set in stone and presented in a more cinematic way with lots of well written quest missions with actual depth to them instead of just telling you to go to point X and kill random throw away npc orc number 1000,000,001. This game is cheap in every sense of the word and it's obvious that the only way it got good reviews was through bribes. Stick to RPG's that are actually worth a damn and leave this one on the shelf. I dont care about texture quality because its old gen, but that lag means you failed and expecting people to pay full retail price to it. Something fundementally wrong this game on old-gen, please take a look a gameplay video before buy. Expand

I played this game for....hmmm.....25 minutes! And it wasn't appealing at all. Bad textures, bad draw distance, bugs and clippings everywhere ... blah blah blah. This looks more like an old XBOX(R) game than a 360 game. I don't know what happens with the PS4 and XONE versions because I don't own one (and probably I won't since I prefer to give money to a good PC from now on). But I think the XBOX 360 -besides being outdated- could do far better than that. But the devs seemed lazy enough and they made a X360/PS3 game that does not -by any means- worth of 55 Euros!! Avoid. It's unfortunate because the story seemed really interesting and it hooks you right away. There doesn't seem to be an issue with load times, or anything, but all the images look kind of blurry, very similar to watching a video with bad resolution. My TV is a 1080p but the game looks like -- well, whatever the lowest resolution that exists. I never made it past the intro, the graphics were that bad... Expand
