This game has single handedly re-energized my enthusiasm for the FPS genre. Perfectly playable on a wide range of systems, and the gameplay and balance is very well thought out. But I'm sure Valve will address that soon enough. And to Jack T who gave it a 0 because it's not good for kids... WTF dude? You know it IS rated "M" for mature. I'm glad I waited a while to pass final judgement on this game. I was sucked into the hype and the idea of mowing down zombies was all I needed to pick this up on release day. I fired it up and played through each single player campaign the first day as I have never seen the use of having a live membership. I sat there a bit replaying a level saying to myself "That's it?!" Short campaigns, minimal story, and a small selection of weapons. I had a month card laying around, popped in the code and jumped into a quick match. Entirely different game! The FPS mentality that is so ingrained was immediately tossed. Some moments are down right hilarious. Newer players looking for to run and gun taken down before anyone can get near them. Covering your team mates while they heal and reload. Yes the game can be simple and sometimes easy if played right, but one wrong move or a team mate lost at a desperate time can spell disaster for everyone. I love the director aspect that encourages searching every nook while penalizing you for taking the time to do so. Desperately searching for a health kit? Take too much time and the horde will be unleashed on you. Burn through the level and you will deal with less horde but more chances of running out of supplies at a critical moment. It is extremely well balanced. Yes the lack of weapons is frustrating at first but the deeper you look at them they are all different ways to play the game. I challenge everyone to get with a group of friends on "Dead Air" stick three friends on tail of the downed plane and one with the hunting rifle in the small storage area in the wall of the building. They attract the majority of the attention and leave you free to snipe any specials that may get the jump on them. They may drop a hundred infected, but you easily pop and protect them from 15 specials that could wreck everything. For all the hate the hunting rifle gets, it is hands down my favorite weapon in the game and deserving of way more love than its getting. Expand

Left 4 Dead is a good concept that relies heavily on playing with other people. If one does not have a bunch of friends or xbox live, they're in for a bad experience. While single player isn't bad it's not the most fun thing in the world. The fun is playing with others through the zombie infested campaigns. The only issue with the game is that there are 4 different scenarios.

I absolutely love this game. It's addictive, fun, and intense. The expert difficulty setting is extremely difficult and the random spawn of zombie hordes and bosses makes it a new situation every time. The multiplayer is great as well. Finally a game where people actually have to cooperate online in order to win. If you don't cooperate with your team, you will most assuredly I absolutely love this game. The versus is the most fun I've had online in a while. I will say this about the lack of story, this is a zombie SURVIVAL game, not a STORY zombie game like Resident Evil. Your only goal is to survive, not to figure out why the world is infected or who could have done such an awful thing. It is purely about cooperating with your team and surviving the hordes of zombies that rush at you. For those who love fast paced shooters and multiplayer, this game is definitely for you. For those who crave a plot and story in their shooter, this game is probably not for you. Expand

ummm....well, I have no problem with somebody expressing their opinion, but I want to point out some misconceptions. There is plenty of ammo, seeing how the A.I. director throws some at your team when you are low, also it is unlimited when found so you can keep running back to an ammo pile until you've killed all of the zombies in an area. Next, if there were any more med packs, then ummm....well, I have no problem with somebody expressing their opinion, but I want to point out some misconceptions. Next, if there were any more med packs, then the game wold get way too easy. When I played online my partners were great. You know why? I healed them a couple times and saved them another few. Everybody will get mad at you if you either don't help, or if you--for instance--have a medpack and over half health and decide not to heal your teammate who' s at about 10% health or less. As far as resident evil goes...this game doesn't rip it off. In RE the zombies are slow-moving diseased townspeople who use weapons and retain some human characteristics. In L4D the zombies are more like animals, moving extremely fast and attacking with their bare hands. Lastly there are 6 different types of infected in L4D with unique attacks and traits...so all the zombies aren't the same. I wouldn't get this for single player alone, it's worth it for the co-op and online. Expand

This game is great. I have always trusted Valve to make quality games, and this one does not dissappoint. There could have been a more in-depth story, but the great gameplay distracts from that.

Even though there's no defined story, the characters have their own personality. While in an elevater, the war-verteran Bill said, "If I start to turn, don't hesitate to shoot."

Francis, the biker, replyed, "If your beard starts to turn, can we shoot that?"
    "Shut up, Francis."

The gameplay is the big point of the game. The AI Director keeps you on your toes by throwing all sorts of twists and changes. While holding out on a rooftop waiting for a helicopter, our team had to holdout a 15 minute zombie swarm. playing on the second-highest difficulty, this was not an easy feat. Constant swarms of zombies combined with random boss zombies thrown in battered us to the point of death. When the helicopter arrived, I immidiatly jumped on. The AI was a bit too focused on killing the zombie horde and the Tank that had just come instead of hopping on the chopper. I had 17 health left, and the rest of my team died.

Although the AI is smarter than common bots, they are programmed to kill everything first, then complete an objective. It'd be more realistic if the AI would immidiatly run to the objective, rather than stand and shoot.

I haven't played online yet, But I'm sure it will be incredibly fun, and my experiences with the demo were.

My favorite game at the moment. keep in mind, this is a MULTIPLAYER game. If you want to enjoy the game make sure you play it online. Hence, there's no story needed. Suprisingly, most players really try to play as team-oriented as possible and many use the built-in voice chat feature. It may take a while sometimes, but once you're in a capable team, this game is just a blast.

Its impossible to stay out of war, because even when you give your hard earned technology, great people, or gold, in 4 turns they demand more. Gets very aggravatiing. 4. No "workers" - You're probably familiar with the worker concept - find the resource, build a road to it, and construct the appropriate contraption for extracting the resource. In CivRev, there are no workers, and resources just float themselves to you i suppose, once you discover them. Which means in PC versions, if you liked being "the guy with all the oil" In CivRev, there is no such title. 3. One way highway on death threats - Not only do they come at you every 2 turns demading everything, but if you're the guy who should be throwing the threats, too bad. The levels themselves stay the same, but the experience is different every time. As someone from Valve said, it promotes "organic storytelling." This happens over and over, for the same game. There are only several types of enemies, and yet every time you play, the experience is different. A look into the developer's comments (included with the Game of the Year version, at least) gave me a good idea of just how much thought was put into every aspect of this game. -- The graphics aren't breath-taking and miraculous, but the techniques put into the development of the graphics certainly are. Music and sound effects are used as audio cues to alert players to where enemies may be hiding. I mentioned in another review, actually, that it is these things that will be remembered several years from now, rather than a game having 'the best' graphics, or 'the best' shallow trait. -- I bought Left 4 Dead over a year ago, and have played it regularly since then. It never lost any of its fun value over that time. Expand

Each level is broken into five chapters, the first four require the players to make it to a safe house before a final “survival” chapter in which waves of enemies will hit as you try to hold out long enough for rescue to arrive (the final “every man for himself” dash never fails to entertain!).

To this day Left 4 Dead, and its sequel, remain amongst the best online experiences in gaming and the real key to the games success is that working together is not optional. Wandering off alone will almost always lead to certain death from one of the many enemy types out to kill you and the game perfectly balances the need to keep yourself alive whilst also looking out for your friends. With enemies appearing in different locations on each play-through there is also plenty of replayablity.

Before Left 4 Dead's release, I had always wanted an intense shooter that pits you against a city full of flesh hungry zombies. So needless to say when I heard about Left 4 Dead, I was all over it, and I'm happy to say that Valve did not disappoint. This game is pretty much the game I had been wishing for since I first saw Dawn of the Dead (2004). Left 4 Dead is an intense, pulse pounding first person shooter that has been brilliantly created with an A.I. director that constantly changes the item locations and enemy spawn locations, making each time you play a campaign different than the last time you played it. This game strongly relies on its multiplayer, which is no less than spectacular. Playing with three other "survivors" in a zombie apocalypse is something that even today still hasn't gotten old. The versus mode is another great multiplayer mode that allows you to play as the survivors, then the infected or vise-versa in a four on four match. Another thing that makes versus so good is the fact that its completely balanced. The graphics are a bit old, but within respected tolerances. The voice acting is great and the dialogue actually made me laugh out loud in a few times. The only reason this game doesn't achieve perfection is because of lack of content, but the only reason this is a complaint is because the game is so much fun, that I just keep wanting more and more. This game delivered exactly what any zombie media fan could want and is easily one of the funnest games I've ever played. Expand

Overall, worth the price of admission for any FPS/Zombie fan. But not without it's faults.

    Pros:
    Simple and polished game mechanics.
    Good Graphics
    Great "movie" like theme.
    Interesting levels.
    Some freedoms to do stuff
    Your favorite Zombie guns
    Excellent co-op play
Endless pistol ammo and plenty of "big weapon" ammo (yeah for action fans!)

    Cons:
Not much gun variety or options
    Not enough campaigns
Not enough freedom to get from point A to point B
Little to no zombie variety. You got "normal" zombies, your three main 'sub-boss' zombies (Hunter, Boomer, Smoker) and then the Witch (easily avoidable) and Tank.
Bad AI, even for zombies (how can I stand in the middle of a room during a zombie rush, mowing down zombies and they don't even bother to attack me?).
    Not enough environment interaction.
Movement slowed on being hit by a zombie? Really?
Endless pistol ammo and plenty of "big weapon" ammo (boo for strategy and thriller fans)

At the end of the day, it's a gun game, at least for a while. I don't see much replay value but even then, it's still worth playing a few times, at least for the PC with a $45 price tag. XBox 360 players might want to pass on this game or pick it up on the PC instead.

Lots of potential, an average showing. Can really shine with user created maps/campaigns and some more variety of options, weapons, environment interaction (how about building a barricade?).

A little more thrill and a little less constant action would be nice too. I'd like to see sneaking through empty streets to stock-up on ammo and finding a "safe spot" to build a barricade and prepare for a zombie rush. Also a mix between slow moving zombies and fast moving ones would be cool. Make some slow moving zombies hard to maneuver around (like a mine field) while the fast zombies part of the zombie rush.

As you can see, it could have been a lot more, but it's still something.

For one, Versus Mode is incredibly unbalanced; the AI Director makes no attempt to correct lopsided games, players are not matched according to skill, and it's incredibly difficult to make a comeback when the other team makes it to the safe room once. Frequently I find myself on either a terrible team or a team that's too good, resulting in an experience that isn't very fun. Another downside is the current lack of downloadable content and small number of maps, which along with the game's lack of customization makes L4D very repetitive. Also, for no good reason, the game lacks 4-player local co-op (you need two consoles or to use Live). Finally, most maps are near pitch black with a small cone of visible area from your flashlight, which adds to the suspense but irritates the eyes and wastes the space on your widescreen TV. Still, with all of these downsides, the game can be very entertaining in small groups or over Live (especially in the middle of the night). Expand

First of all....its fun, fast, and intensely entertaining...but its not perfect. Graphically, when compared to the likes of Far Cry 2, Resistance 2, CoD5 World at War, and Gears of War 2....Left 4 Dead falls very flat, sporting graphics you would expect to have seen 2 years ago. The game runs smooth enough....even when things are tense and there are seemingly hundreds of zombies on screen, but the bland textures in the backgrounds, often repeated zombie character models, and no frills design/style give it a very vanilla LOOK. Sound is excellent, whether it be the tense chatter amongst the characters, the screeching and howling of zombies running full sprint, or the lumbering sound of a "HULK"-like zombie crashing through....the sound keeps you on your tense and keeps your pulse-rate up. Gameplay consist of a straight-forward from point A to point B style, which isn't bad....but a little more open-endedness would have been more favorable and while there is a decent amount of ground to cover and the game rarely ever lets you sit in one spot too long....a larger world would have been nice even if it seems unnecessary. This game moves FAST...you character is seemingly running at full sprint at ALL TIMES and for a good reason....the zombies in this, when made aware of your presense, will stop at nothing to get to you....smashing through doors with their fist....spilling out of door-ways 10 to 20 at a time, just booking it at you....yes, this is a shoot/reload, shoot/reload, shoot/reload type a game where your objective is to survive the trip to your destination....its a bloody good time, and with friends....its priceless. Overall, im pleased with Left 4 Dead....this game SCREAMS multi-player over Live and that for sure will be its biggest redeeming factor because single player WILL get old rather quickly. If there is ever a game thats needs constant downloadable content....its this one, they should keep releasing new levels and scenarios for this game and i can assure you....it will be around for some time. As a first-person shooter, it can be really fun, however once you've beaten each map a few times there isn't much more to do with this game. The second one is much better and much more worth purchasing (not to mention it came out about a mere year after this one). If you force yourself to think about what you do and take the game more slowly and sneakily on a harder mode (like Expert) and turn off the cheesy loud over the top music, this game can be pretty intense and realistically frightening (depending on what kind of setting your put yourself in). The best aspect of the game is probably Versus Mode, because playing as the mutant-like 'special infected' is quite entertaining. I realize I seem pretty down about this game, and this is only because I've had it for years now, but when I first got it, I thought it was one of the greatest games ever made. However, now I see that in comparison to the sequel, this isn't so impressive. Plus the Steam PC version is at least 10x better, especially since you can download modded maps such as a few Silent Hill maps and many more. Expand

This is one of a dwindling number of couch co-op titles that gives you solid multiplayer functionality on one screen. It's a great game to play with friends, the co-op feels like a full feature, rather than something added on later (which many two player games falter at).

The controls are fairly intuitive, and actually implement a few features I wish more first-person games would offer.

How many times can you watch the same movie in the same day, week, or month without getting bored? There's only 5 guns. 2 are just derivatives of each other (sub-machine gun => Assault Rifle, Pump Shotgun => Auto-Shotgun). Then you have 2 types of throwables. A Molotov cocktail and pipe-bomb. That's about it. Once you played through a campaign and you know "the story" and the "traps", you have little reason to play it again. It gets boring... fast. The game play is impeccable but there's just no staying power. Though, I'm at odds for the decision to low down your movement speed when being hit. That just doesn't feel right. If you try to take a shortcut by jumping across the turn on a cat-walk (level 2 blood harvest) and you fall, you get screwed. You lose pretty much all you're health if you fall just 10 feet. Before the game came out i heard there would be a variety of guns.. thats a lie, theres 6 different primary weapons, pistols, thats 7, then dual pistols (if that even counts) and thats it. Pipe bombs and molotov cocktails count as miscellanious, but I'm pretty sure they counted them as guns. Sometimes you had to think, like "ooh, molotov, lets chuck it at the tank and see what happens" but yea, its basically point and shoot. Teamwork is 100 percent essential and theres no way you can go ninja, or rambo and run out and kill everything. They could fixed almost all the flaws, even if they did, there would always be that 1 big flaw. For the FPS game lover, the fact that many people don't play a lot, just once in a while, and don't learn everything, all the usual spots for items, tactics and what-not (making them a 'noob') ruins it for almost the entire team when they decide to help up a computer teammate instead of shooting off the hunter of a human player. Like always I'm reviewing the game for people that are asking themselves if it's worth a buy NOW, and therefore take into account that there's almost nobody left online and for Left 4 Dead it's obviously impacting the final mark.

So technically the game is beautiful for its time, with very nice light effects that increase the creepy atmosphere, nice sound design for the enemies, no framerate issue even when there's tons of zombies on the screen, Valve did, like always, a very professional job.

Concerning the gameplay that's what has been the most "damaged" by time as like I said you won't find a lot of people online and this game is thought to be play in groups of 4 to have the most fun, the IA for the allies is not bad at all if you play in solo but there the game is a rather simple FPS with similar situations again and again, everything works fine but there's no variety.

And it's not the nonexistent story that will appeal to solo players, every mission has the same one and it only takes one word, ESCAPE. It will take approximately 6 hours to do every mission and once again, if you play alone there's 0 incentive to do them again, so it's very short.

In conclusion Left 4 Dead is a very fun game to play with friends thanks to a simple but good gameplay, but the lack of story, the repetitive level design and its short length makes it forgettable for solo player. I would advise it if you know for sure that you have at least one friend willing to play it with you, if not there are better FPS out there for you.

I mean, that might be ok if it was realy full and thought out, but not only are half the objects seen in game literaly ripped straight from Half Life 2, it doesn't even have a story line! What were valve doing all of those years? Sitting there picking their noses? Valve's feeble excuse for this pitiful gameplay time was the games massive replayablity, due to the 'AI director' which would change the positioning and quantity of the zombies each playthrough depending on how well players were doing. But as I played it, the zombies would either come from dark alley to my right, or a dark alley to my left, regardless of whether I was limping along with two temamates down and a single shell in my shotgun, or if i was tearing through the horde like an almighty god with full health and an almost unlimited supply of ammo. At any rate, they were the still just the same zombies in the same place to be disposed of in the same way. In short, the games excuse for not being pitifuly short - replayability - is... well a complete fabrication. a lot of shooting. too much pacing. repetitive. not any story - even if it's supposed to be a blend of multiplayer and story. learning curve is high on the infected versus play. levels are too long for casual play. not layed out well. repetive graphics,. two worlds are almost the same.

Are you people serious? It is a fun game, don't get me wrong. Online, offline, it's still fun... For about 15 minutes. Then it just gets tedious and repetitive and stops being fun. No actual variety in weapons (GoW2) no moral dilemmas (Fallout 3) no deep storyline (bioshock) this game is only 1 thing. shoot shoot shoot shoot shoot, reload, shoot shoot shoot, get evacuated. Boring... oh, and do the characters need to say "reloading!" every 10 seconds? it really is annoying. Tell me I'm not the only one bothered by that. Expand

It was a good game initially, but it kind of lacks replayability as it gets tedious and the gameplay seems to get repetitive. I waited 2 hours to play this game at pax this year and boy was it not worth the wait! For starters the graphics are a good 3 years pre-next gen and the animations for certain characters was stilted. Do not spend 60 dollars on this game. We borrowed a copy and other than the initial "this is cool" reaction the game gets old fast and by fast I mean really fast. No scare factor, no strategy, no nothing other than hold down the right trigger. Terrible.

  1. Left 4 Dead's simplicity offers purity of gameplay - the same reason that gamers keep returning to classic arcade games. Come to think of it, with a handful of levels and unpredictable events happening within them, Left 4 Dead has more in common with "Ms. Pac-Man" than just the eating. It's the same thing over and over - but when simple ingredients are perfectly prepared, what could be a mere snack becomes a feast. This one just happens to be on human flesh. [Holiday 2008, p.32]

There's absolutely no doubt that Left 4 Dead is one of the most social and exciting multiplayer games that we've ever played. It's almost pitch perfect in how it captures the tension and the action of a Hollywood zombie movie.

The inventive and highly entertaining competitive multiplayer mode just adds to the experience, and we're looking forward to seeing what Valve's got planned for the game's future. Out of all the titles that have shaped the Year of Living Cooperatively, this may be the best experience of them all.
