It isnt so fun on single player but whit 3 friends, its probably best multiplayer game ever made. BUY THIS GAME if you like zombies and network shooters.

Most people I see faulting this game are gamers without an Xbox Live account. Playing single player with only bots would definitely get tedious, but as someone with Live I can't fault the game for that. Online it's an absolute blast. And don't be put off the by the thought of only 4 campaigns or the idea of constant co-op gameplay because there's also the fantastic Versus mode. It's possibly even more fun than the standard co-op. The ability to play as the zombies, and the threat of a human zombie team when playing as the survivors adds a whole new dimension to the game that ramps up the fun factor ten fold. Not to mention the fact that Valve plans to keep the game supported for a long time with new DLC content. They've already announced that the first package of downloadable content will be available soon. If you're looking for a shooter with plenty of action, tight gameplay, and absolutely fantastic multiplayer gaming, then look no further than Left 4 Dead. Expand

I absolutely love this game. It's addictive, fun, and intense. The expert difficulty setting is extremely difficult and the random spawn of zombie hordes and bosses makes it a new situation every time. The multiplayer is great as well. The versus is the most fun I've had online in a while. I will say this about the lack of story, this is a zombie SURVIVAL game, not a STORY zombie game like Resident Evil. Your only goal is to survive, not to figure out why the world is infected or who could have done such an awful thing. It is purely about cooperating with your team and surviving the hordes of zombies that rush at you. For those who love fast paced shooters and multiplayer, this game is definitely for you. For those who crave a plot and story in their shooter, this game is probably not for you. Expand

Best co-op game of all-time. No denying that. If you gave this game any less than a six, than you're an idiot who never played online. IT IS A GAME OBVIOUSLY CENTERED AROUND ONLINE PLAY. IF YOU DID NOT HAVE XBOX LIVE YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE BOUGHT THE GAME. All that aside, there will be DLC really soon, so no more of playing No Mercy all the time on Versus.

Left 4 Dead is a good concept that relies heavily on playing with other people. If one does not have a bunch of friends or xbox live, they're in for a bad experience. While single player isn't bad it's not the most fun thing in the world. The fun is playing with others through the zombie infested campaigns. The only issue with the game is that there are 4 different scenarios.

It really does just feel like a slightly polished mod, there is no way this should be released for full price on the 360 and it should have been released as a budget Steam exclusive only. The graphics are the same as the original 2004 release of HL2 before the engine tweaks the Orange Box version got, the sound effects are all recycled from HL2 which in turn are recycled from HL1 and any music you hear sounds like a remix of some of the stuff from HL2:Ep2. This is just lazy and makes it feel even more like a mod rather than a full product worthy of £40. Replay value? None, this is the most repetitive game I have ever played. It takes no skill and is no fun, and even on four-player online co-op on Expert difficulty (which, by the way, is the way this turd is supposed to be played). There are only six weapons, your AI teammates run around in circles making dumb "witty" comments and the environments feel fake, they feel like they were just designed as somewhere suited for zombies rather than somewhere where zombies might end up. I paid full price for this game and was bored within three days, if I wanted to walk through a bunch of cliched, bland, predictable environments shooting at stuff for the sake of it I'd find it so much cheaper to just go to my local pub and play Time Crisis. Come to think of it, Time Crisis is more fun. Not to mention Valve's treatment of their console community is nothing short of dreadful, quite frankly. The 360 version of TF2 is only now even being offered the chance of updates which the PC version got LAST Christmas, Valve's console support is a joke and this game will die on the 360, no question - the PC version will last beyond the end of time because of custom gametypes, mods, maps, everything that the 360 will never ever get. Zombies are an annoying fad and Valve have just cashed in. This game really is rather poor and the community surrounding it is just filled with fanboys who defend it to death if you dare legitimately criticise any aspect of it. Expand

I'm glad I waited a while to pass final judgement on this game. I was sucked into the hype and the idea of mowing down zombies was all I needed to pick this up on release day. I fired it up and played through each single player campaign the first day as I have never seen the use of having a live membership. I sat there a bit replaying a level saying to myself "That's it?!" Short campaigns, minimal story, and a small selection of weapons. I had a month card laying around, popped in the code and jumped into a quick match. Entirely different game! The FPS mentality that is so ingrained was immediately tossed. Some moments are down right hilarious. Newer players looking for to run and gun taken down before anyone can get near them. Covering your team mates while they heal and reload. Yes the game can be simple and sometimes easy if played right, but one wrong move or a team mate lost at a desperate time can spell disaster for everyone. I love the director aspect that encourages searching every nook while penalizing you for taking the time to do so. Desperately searching for a health kit? Take too much time and the horde will be unleashed on you. Burn through the level and you will deal with less horde but more chances of running out of supplies at a critical moment. It is extremely well balanced. Yes the lack of weapons is frustrating at first but the deeper you look at them they are all different ways to play the game. I challenge everyone to get with a group of friends on "Dead Air" stick three friends on tail of the downed plane and one with the hunting rifle in the small storage area in the wall of the building. They attract the majority of the attention and leave you free to snipe any specials that may get the jump on them. They may drop a hundred infected, but you easily pop and protect them from 15 specials that could wreck everything. For all the hate the hunting rifle gets, it is hands down my favorite weapon in the game and deserving of way more love than its getting. Expand

Maybe I'm old fashion, but there's something a lot more enjoyable about a game when you are playing with people sitting next to you, not people you'd hate in real life, if you met, 1/2 way across the US. So it's a 2 person game, but there are 2 AIs that get in your way constantly and/or die horribly. Which really makes me confused because the game's AI and score keeper treats them like they aren't AI's... so why can't they be controlled by people. There is a horrible lacking in weaponry, and considering how horrible a shot you can be in this game and still succeed, you'd think they'd make it a lil more diverse... maybe more than one gun with a scope. The mobs are repetitive, not even counting the hordes of regular zombies that flood at you. The occasional special zombie, while interesting the first 2-3 levels, become tedious and old shortly after. The game is mindless and even though the scene's change, you find yourself with a strange feeling of deja vu in many new areas. I see where they wanted to go with this game, and it has a lot of great things to say about it. But it really falls short in some major categories. They should have stuck with a PC game, even on the Xbox it feels like a clunky PC game, and then at least I wouldn't feel ripped off having bought a 2 person game that does everything in it's power to call it 4 person. Tons of narrow places with zombies waiting. Some of them dont really bother you. In fact i went into a bedroom with a zombie just slamming her head against a wall???? Either way i just went up and owner her soul but still made me laugh. And the witch was a nice touch. (Just dont shine the light on her or its pretty much game over for you). I then played co op with a buddy. We put the difficutly one more up to the third hardest. And that was def hard. Not impossible but def a challenge. Just when you think you have a place under control think again. This game rarely lets you rest. And this is not a game that once you beat it your like "time to trade in". This game will forever be fun. Mark my words. I dont play video games a lot but man this is something im trying to make more time for. I was seriously thinking about calling out of work to play more. haha. anyways hope this gives you a little boost to go out and buy it. Hit me up when online with x box live. USA CHAMPS. later. Effing Spectacular! I dont even know where to start. The atmosphere is perfect. The gameplay is INTENSE. After my first game I had to take a break to get my heartrate back down to reasonable levels. Honestly, I couldnt ask for anything more in a game. The controls are smooth and easy to get the hang of. Gameplay is fantastic. The graphics are great. The sounds and music are terrifying. Effing Spectacular! I dont even know where to start. The atmosphere is perfect. The gameplay is INTENSE. BUT BUT The most outstanding thing about this game is the "AI director" Now this is, to my knowledge, and ENTIRELY new concept in the world of gaming. Basically, the game watches you, and the group of players you are with, and judges your skill level, pacing and stress levels and deciedes where and when to place monsters and events. In other words, even though this game has only 20 maps, none of the will EVER play the same way twice. You will never know ahead of time where the enemies will be, when the mob of 20 zombies will race around and over everything in their path to claw yer guts out. and BTW the director even plays music according to what is happening in the game. Which, despite it changing at the whim of the AI director, has never seemed out of place of poorly mixed. All in all. this is an amazing game. I give it 98% simply becase I think that there could be more levels, and more boss monsters.. however, valve has already promised to give us these things so I may as well give it 100%. Expand

I'm surprised by all the high rankings this game is getting. Yes, the Director is neat and creates a different hoard of zombies each time, but the bottom line is that the hoards of zombies are always the same hoard, just in different places. I would have much more preferred 5-7 zombies that walk slower, but you need precise firepower to eliminate. Boom headshot kind of stuff. Generally, you just go full-auto all the time. If you can point and click, you can succeed. I've only played the single player but in the hour I've spent so far, I'm already regretting the $50.00 I put out for the game. Although the graphics are not up to par with such games as mirror's edge and gears of war 2, the gameplay is truely innovative. Maybe you are just don't know what your child likes as most "average" parents can figure out, or you brainwashed your child to do only what you want him/her to, maybe only let him/her play educational games, not let him play outside, and only let him/her wear a certain clothing. This is about as tense as it gets. It recreates the dread we experienced in Doom 3, but throws it in by the gallon instead of a trickle. Single player is tolerable, but L4D really shines with friends. Campaign mode and the fantastic Versus mode are excellent. Well worth a look!

I really, really hate this game. I've been waiting for this game for months, and Valve gives me this? I will admit that the graphics are nice, but that's where the good things end. Here is a list of my problems with this game: #1: There is no replay value. It's kind of funny how this game was built for replay value and it DOESN'T HAVE ANY! I will admit that the graphics are nice, but that's where the good things end. Here is a list of my problems with this game: #1: There is no replay value. It's kind of funny how this game was built for replay value and it DOESN'T HAVE ANY! I played this game for about two hours and I was bored to tears. The first level looked pretty promising, but by the time I finished the second level, the game began to lose its initial appeal. First of all, the game has six guns, that's it, and only five of them are worth using (the hunting rifle sucks). Second of all, the game follows a cookie-cutter formula for every level: blast your way through hordes of zombies (which isn't challenging or fun at all) and then push a button or open a door which calls more hordes of zombies which are not any more fun to kill. This will get you to another part of the level where you fight more hordes of zombies. Every once and a while, you will encounter a "boss zombie". Wow, that sounds exciting! It's not, you don't really have to change your tactics (gun it down) for any of the boss zombies except for the Boomer (which is shove and then gun him down). Eventually, you will get to the end of the level, but it doesn't really feel like an accomplishment because it wasn't challenging at all. #2: The game is not scary at all. There are a load of other FPS games available for just about every gaming system out today, a lot of these games are good, and I could have bought a number of them instead of this awful, awful game, but I thought this game would be scary, and boy, do I like a good scary video game. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. Zombies are incredibly easy to kill, even on the hardest difficulty mode, and you are able to carry way too much ammo. Also, the weapons you get are waaaaay too powerful, last time I checked automatic shotgun + assault rifle > zombie horde. Take Resident Evil, make the zombies god awful, give yourself the rocket launcher with infinite ammo, and allow four people to play it at the same time and you have an experience much life Left 4 Dead. This kinda ties in with reason #3 because, since your survival is pretty much ensured, you don't really have to wonder what's around that next corner or what's in the shadows in the corner because, whatever it is, you can kill it with hardly any effort. #3: The game is way to freaking easy. Even the hardest difficulty setting is easy in Left 4 Dead. If the game was Left 1 Dead then the current difficulty level would be appropriate, but with four players (of any skill level) the game is laughably easy. The health of the zombies hardly changes at all in between difficulty levels and, as long as you keep them away from you, they are just as easy to gun down. I really hope these three reasons are enough to stop you from getting this game, I really do (I could give you several more, such as how the story sucks, but I won't for the sake of readability). I would not wish this game on anybody. Remember how repetitive Assassin's creed was? Multiply that by sixteen and you have Left 4 Dead. Come on, six guns?! Some of you who already own the game may say things like "But there's an AI director that makes the game different every time you play it", and that may be true, but how different? All the AI director does is change the position of some enemies, I really could never tell any difference from one play to the next. I just want to tell everyone who reads this that this game is god awful and you should not get it. If you HAVE to get this game, rent it, you will be happy that I saved you forty bucks. To sum it up, I am very sorely disappointed in this game and I plan to return it or trade it in ASAP. Expand

As far as knowing the "traps"? You can't know them. The Director, Valve's awesome piece of AI is analyzing your play style in real time. It helps you or harms you depending on how well you're doing, and the attacks will never come from the same place twice.
This is genius, as far as I'm concerned. And the strength is definitely in the co-op play. If you don't have access to online play, maybe that's your problem. Never before have I seen a game where the players are so well coordinated, and I was playing in a game where only one other player had a mic. You'd never see that in TF2. We worked together, and we won.

My first non-demo map I played led me into a farmhouse by a cornfield. The 4 of us moved to the second floor landing, where we were surrounded by doors. Suddenly we heard the screeching of zombie hordes coming from all around us, and for close to 20 seconds, that's all that happened, the sound just got louder and louder. Suddenly, one of the doors splintered and a gray, dead hands reached into the room with us, grabbing for living flesh. A second later, another door did the same thing, and they just kept coming. We all took a door and the stairs and started firing, chattering on the mic "Watch the door behind you!" "Holy shit there's a lot of them!" "Crotch down, CROTCH DOWN!" Finally the streams of zombies started to thin, and everyone took a breath. We made it.

This game is great. I have always trusted Valve to make quality games, and this one does not dissappoint. There could have been a more in-depth story, but the great gameplay distracts from that.

Even though there's no defined story, the characters have their own personality. While in an elevater, the war-verteran Bill said, "If I start to turn, don't hesitate to shoot."

Francis, the biker, replyed, "If your beard starts to turn, can we shoot that?"
    "Shut up, Francis."

The gameplay is the big point of the game. The AI Director keeps you on your toes by throwing all sorts of twists and changes. While holding out on a rooftop waiting for a helicopter, our team had to holdout a 15 minute zombie swarm. playing on the second-highest difficulty, this was not an easy feat. Constant swarms of zombies combined with random boss zombies thrown in battered us to the point of death. When the helicopter arrived, I immidiatly jumped on. The AI was a bit too focused on killing the zombie horde and the Tank that had just come instead of hopping on the chopper. I had 17 health left, and the rest of my team died.

Although the AI is smarter than common bots, they are programmed to kill everything first, then complete an objective. It'd be more realistic if the AI would immidiatly run to the objective, rather than stand and shoot.

I haven't played online yet, But I'm sure it will be incredibly fun, and my experiences with the demo were.

First of all....its fun, fast, and intensely entertaining...but its not perfect. Graphically, when compared to the likes of Far Cry 2, Resistance 2, CoD5 World at War, and Gears of War 2....Left 4 Dead falls very flat, sporting graphics you would expect to have seen 2 years ago. The game runs smooth enough....even when things are tense and there are seemingly hundreds of zombies on screen, but the bland textures in the backgrounds, often repeated zombie character models, and no frills design/style give it a very vanilla LOOK. Sound is excellent, whether it be the tense chatter amongst the characters, the screeching and howling of zombies running full sprint, or the lumbering sound of a "HULK"-like zombie crashing through....the sound keeps you on your tense and keeps your pulse-rate up. Gameplay consist of a straight-forward from point A to point B style, which isn't bad....but a little more open-endedness would have been more favorable and while there is a decent amount of ground to cover and the game rarely ever lets you sit in one spot too long....a larger world would have been nice even if it seems unnecessary. This game moves FAST...you character is seemingly running at full sprint at ALL TIMES and for a good reason....the zombies in this, when made aware of your presense, will stop at nothing to get to you....smashing through doors with their fist....spilling out of door-ways 10 to 20 at a time, just booking it at you....yes, this is a shoot/reload, shoot/reload, shoot/reload type a game where your objective is to survive the trip to your destination....its a bloody good time, and with friends....its priceless. Overall, im pleased with Left 4 Dead....this game SCREAMS multi-player over Live and that for sure will be its biggest redeeming factor because single player WILL get old rather quickly. If there is ever a game thats needs constant downloadable content....its this one, they should keep releasing new levels and scenarios for this game and i can assure you....it will be around for some time. While this dosen't earn my "HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION".....it IS RECOMMENDED.....mainly for the online-playing crowd. Expand

Bad AI, even for zombies (how can I stand in the middle of a room during a zombie rush, mowing down zombies and they don't even bother to attack me?).
    Not enough environment interaction.
Movement slowed on being hit by a zombie? Really?
Endless pistol ammo and plenty of "big weapon" ammo (boo for strategy and thriller fans)

At the end of the day, it's a gun game, at least for a while. I don't see much replay value but even then, it's still worth playing a few times, at least for the PC with a $45 price tag. XBox 360 players might want to pass on this game or pick it up on the PC instead.

Lots of potential, an average showing. Can really shine with user created maps/campaigns and some more variety of options, weapons, environment interaction (how about building a barricade?).

A little more thrill and a little less constant action would be nice too. I'd like to see sneaking through empty streets to stock-up on ammo and finding a "safe spot" to build a barricade and prepare for a zombie rush. Also a mix between slow moving zombies and fast moving ones would be cool. Make some slow moving zombies hard to maneuver around (like a mine field) while the fast zombies part of the zombie rush.

As you can see, it could have been a lot more, but it's still something.

Look. For anyone looking for a very fun game no matter how long you play it, this is your game. Anyone who says it is short, they are clearly playing on lower difficulties! Once you try going through these hordes with your friend beside you on expert, it becomes a whole new and exciting game. Just buy, play, and have fun!

I love this game. The game would be great enough as single player, but co-op lets it take the prize. Most would take off points for its shallow story, but that makes it better. There is an air of mystery surrounding the infection, and the story is mostly told by graffiti on the walls of the safe houses. There are even references to valves previous game Portal. left 4 dead is freaking awsome! anyone who voted bad on this game doesn't deserve to rate anything ever again. If you have played the "demo" (the full games not even out yet) you would get a "small" taste of what the real game is like. Super fast and super uber zombies keep this game fast paced and always asking where did Bill go?

Pros: Amazing blend of action, horror, co-op, vs, and single player. This game generates an amazing amount of replayability and immersion with the AI director shaking things up with every play through. Each campaign has a different feel and covers a vast amount of ground without letting players get lost along the way. Each campaign has a different feel and covers a vast amount of ground without letting players get lost along the way. Watching zombies swarm around a pipe bomb and disappear in a mist of blood and shrapnel will never get old. In the same vein, snagging the last standing survivor with the smoker's tongue just as he reaches a fallen comrade is diabolical in it's hilarity. Cons: The game was wasted on 360 owners, most of whom wouldn't know a good game if it pounced on them and clawed their faces off. Griefing idiots make the co-op experience a considerably less fun. Rare, but incredibly aggravating bugs such as jumping down from a ledge a short distance and having the game think you'll fall to your death, making you hang there until you either die or are rescued. Bottom line: This game is hands down the best multiplayer game of the year, the best co-op game in memory, and may well prove to be one of the best games of the last (or next) ten years. Do yourself a favor, if you have a pc that will run this game, buy a copy yesterday. If you have a 360, pawn your noob-box and get a pc so you can L2 play real games; ones you don't have to pay a fee to enjoy online. Failing that, the 360 version is still a beacon of gaming brilliance in a sea of utter mediocrity. Expand

I've been playing this game non stop since the hour it was released. I can't get enough of shooting zombies through the heart, to watch the full out run come to a staggering halt. The source engine is by far superior to any other on the market - well, maybe rivaled only by the current rendition of the Unreal Engine. In my opinion id has a whole lot to make up for. This game is absolutely amazing for those who have waited for a good zombie game to come out! I already love FPS's and this just adds to it! I would say the only downfall to this game is that there are very few checkpoints (average of 4 in each campaign). Although it is meant to be like that, so keep your team together; it also makes it extremely tiresome to get from one safehouse to This game is absolutely amazing for those who have waited for a good zombie game to come out! this game ROCKS, it's timeless kinda like dice. You can play the same level again and again and it does not seem like it's getting old. The feeling of stalking your prey is intense and when it leads to a death your pumped. Great game. Get it for PC

There's nothing more satisfying than playing as a zombie in the 4v4 Co-op Campaign and waiting for just the right moment to pounce on that one player that's lagging behind, or call in a swarm of the undead on your unsuspecting enemies. All in all, Left 4 Dead is a zombie massacre masterpiece.

This is the best instance of Co-operative game play that i've ever experienced. The game is entirely beautifully paced, dramatically dynamic and insanely fun. There have been complaints regarding the length of the individual campaigns but to be totally honest, with the random and variable enemy spawning there is hundreds of hours of gameplay here. This is a must have FPS co-op zombie frag fest game. Other than that, it will more than likely grow old... fast. 5 Campaigns with several sections each. One campaign can take as little as 1 hour to as much as 2+ hours. However, there's little to no reason to play a campaign twice. It's the same thing. How many times can you watch the same movie in the same day, week, or month without getting bored? There's only 5 guns. 2 are just derivatives of each other (sub-machine gun => Assault Rifle, Pump Shotgun => Auto-Shotgun). Then you have 2 types of throwables. A Molotov cocktail and pipe-bomb. That's about it. Once you played through a campaign and you know "the story" and the "traps", you have little reason to play it again. It gets boring... fast. The game play is impeccable but there's just no staying power. Though, I'm at odds for the decision to low down your movement speed when being hit. That just doesn't feel right. But in the end, I'll pay for it again and again, just to sit in an old abandoned farm house, holding the line from hordes of zombies. Hey, they didn't even have to get the AI "smart" because... they are Zombies after all! Expand

Best zombie game ever, enough said.
Nothing like gunning down a horde of charging zombies!

The people who voted this game down, voted before the game even came out. If you're judging it based on the demo, you're either retarded or naive.

Don't let the user scores scare you away from one of the best gaming experiences to date.

  1. Left 4 Dead's simplicity offers purity of gameplay - the same reason that gamers keep returning to classic arcade games. Come to think of it, with a handful of levels and unpredictable events happening within them, Left 4 Dead has more in common with "Ms. Pac-Man" than just the eating. It's the same thing over and over - but when simple ingredients are perfectly prepared, what could be a mere snack becomes a feast. This one just happens to be on human flesh. [Holiday 2008, p.32]

There's absolutely no doubt that Left 4 Dead is one of the most social and exciting multiplayer games that we've ever played. It's almost pitch perfect in how it captures the tension and the action of a Hollywood zombie movie.

The inventive and highly entertaining competitive multiplayer mode just adds to the experience, and we're looking forward to seeing what Valve's got planned for the game's future. Out of all the titles that have shaped the Year of Living Cooperatively, this may be the best experience of them all.
