Single player is better then halo 2 by far but the original in my opinion was the best single player campaign in gaming history and this although good isnt as good as Halo, Half Life 2, Bioshock, or many other single player games. And its longer then everyone says, it took me more then 10 hours to complete, and i played on heroic, many parts will a few tries but nothing too frustrating. Also its glitchy, idk if its just my copy or what but the the final cutscene just died, and i never saw the credits it just got stuck on a single frame, now i gotta replay the final part to see the whole thing. There are also many bugs from killing things, often the enemies will just start to run into a wall and keep running thinking they're going somewhere. not often but it happened a few times to me, ill kill something or someone and their body will do that annoying twitch if it lands on an edge or another object. Usually im not picky about little bugs like this but Bungie prides themselves at completely polishing a game with no bugs and my grade for polishing it is a B-, not the A that halo was or B+ that halo 2 was. Graphically it is amazing at times but a lot of things are just bland and look exactly like they did in halo 2. The explosions are the best ive seen in any video game thou. Multiplayer is better then any other console game of all time and in my opinion better then all computer games too because it is so accessible, and with downloadable content it will only get better. Short Review Gameplay 10-feels like halo, simplicity is a great change of pace to games like Bioshock Graphics-8 Some things wow you others arent much different from Halo 2 Story-9 good wrap up with many twists you wont see coming Replayability:9 will be a huge xbox live title for both co op and multiplayer Sound - 10 think halo 1/2 sound except improved Weapons/Vehicles -10 many new weapons and vehicles to satisfy everyone. Awesome game that pulls together all the elements that have made this a great series and perfects them. I wouldn't read too much into 1/10's from people who've probably never owned a 360 let alone played this. The console wars are alive and well sadly.

Halo 3 definitely lives up to the hype. The campaign was a decent length and ties everything together, the graphics are great though not perfect (more than made up for by the rock solid frame rate), and the music and voice acting was excellent as usual. The multiplayer is not a huge step up from the last incarnation, but it's hard to make it much better. The re-mapping of the X and Halo 3 definitely lives up to the hype. The re-mapping of the X and shoulder buttons take a little getting used to, but it becomes second nature after a while. This game is a lot of fun and has a ton of replay value, especially if you have an xbox live account. The single player is fun, but multiplayer is where all of the Halo games are at their best. Although the game has very good graphics, they could have been better, and that is why this game gets a 9 out of 10 from me.

I can't believe all of the negative reviews I'm seeing. Those people who are giving ratings of 1-6/10 really need too open their eyes and realize that too much innovation could change the game entirely. Halo 3 has innovation (equipment, nicely tweaked control scheme, Forge, Saved Films) but it doesn't go over the limit that many people are expecting it to, so it still feels I can't believe all of the negative reviews I'm seeing. Halo 3 has innovation (equipment, nicely tweaked control scheme, Forge, Saved Films) but it doesn't go over the limit that many people are expecting it to, so it still feels like Halo. If you feel it was overhyped, blame yourself for expecting the hand of god to come down and make Halo 3 the perfect game. The Single Player/Co-Op campaign is somewhat short, but far more spectacular than a game like Gears of War's even shorter and less exciting campaign. Playing 4 man Co-Op over Xbox Live, a feature that GoW left out, is the best Co-Op gets, especially on the Legendary difficulty. In fact, the only issue I have is that the dialogue from characters is sometimes so low that you have to turn up your TV a bit during cutscenes. Not a big deal. Multiplayer is nearly flawless in my opinion. There are so many different game modes to choose from, in addition to being able to create your own and download other people's game modes and maps. I've noticed that a majority people are sticking to the "Golden Three things of Halo"(Weapon, melee, grenades)in conjunction with the Assault Rifle, which can make the game a bit repetitive at times. The solution? Turn Assault RIfles off. Turn anything you want off. Make it a rockets match with low gravity on your version of High Ground loaded with fusion cores. Customize anything you want to. This is perhaps Halo 3's biggest innovation. Halo 3's graphics are not bad either. Granted, GoW's textures beat out Halo 3 here, but when you consider how much of a technological advancement the Unreal Engine 3 was in GoW and that Halo 3 does not have that engine, Halo 3's graphics are quite remarkable, especially on an HDTV. Marty O' Donnell's composition is as amazing as in the first two games, and it expectedly adds depth and complexity to the game's single player missions. Gameplay is extrordinary, as is the AI. All in all, I'd ask that you actually play ALL parts of the game (that includes the multiplayer unlike most reviews I've seen here) before you write a 5/10 review because "Halo 3's storyline was too short!" Oh, and if you haven't played any of the game at all and you're trying to write a review to bash it, go away. Expand

Halo, Halo 2, Gears of War, Call of Duty all of these franchises give you a 10-15 hour campaign mode so what do you expect for an online 4 player co-op shooter? The meat of this game is in its features and online capability. After playing in any mode you can record and send videos to friends to talk trash later. I give this game a rating of 9 because I am a Halo player. By that, I mean; I play Halo online in xbox live. For all you that are bitchin about the short campaign, and not breaking new ground.. I hear you.. now go away. The reason why this game is so good (in my opinion) is because it STILL plays like halo, but is SO polished that it will entertain for years. It comes down to Fun Factor. Period. Now, when I say Halo (and Fun Factor) I mean Halo on xbox live.. because frankly there's no other game that plays with the Online functionality and game play like Halo. Like Bungie's 'holy pyramid' of weapon, grenade, and melee? What do you guys know about that? To me, that is the heart of playing Halo competitively. Bioshock? hahaha does that game play online? I've rented that game, and graphics and game play were admittingly excellent BUT there's no Online aspect to it!! In this day and age, why the fuck would you buy ANY First Person Shooter if it's not online? Bioshock was entertaining, it had smoother graphics and sound than Halo 3, BUT could I see myself playing that game a month after buying it? How would I do that? Somebody please explain to me how a grown adult could play a FPS against 'the computer' after you've beaten it. Do you guys really have that much fun with it? Really? Maybe it's me, but, this day and age.. If the game doesn't have Online play and if you cant play that game with your buddy half way across the world, in the comfort of your own living room, all the while chatting about the last episode of Beauty and the Geek.. I am not forking down $$ for that game. That's all my halo rant.. thanks for reading lol LONG LIVE HALO (at least until Bungie develops a new FPS). Expand

You get a limited amount of an item you can use, despite having plenty of budget (the way they keep items down). You also can't write on anything, which would be really handy. Here, in the Advertising Age, there are plenty of times when something gets so much marketing money behind it that you can't go anywhere without hearing about it (SpiderMan 3, for example). And then there are those times, fewer and farther between, when something has so much hype behind it because it is, in fact, a quality product. Halo 3 falls into the latter of the two. In a nutshell, 3 took the best qualities from 1 & 2, gave them a super makeover, added new weapons, vehicles - ones that are enjoyable to use, as always. But it's still classic Halo gameplay - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. As far as plot goes, Halo 3 finishes the series leaving you satisfied in every way, not leaving it too open-ended. You get to do things in 3 that you always wanted to do in the first two, like destroy dropships, or play through the campaign with friends online. The level design threw back to Halo 1, through most of the game, not copying 1, but reminding you of certain key moments. The ending even brings you back to a specific level in 1, which I won't go into, but it's not a boring rehash, it's exciting. The multiplayer side, even though I've just begun to tap into it, has the most updates of all, but once the new button configuration was adapted - which took a little while but was not terribly frustrating - it felt just like Halo should. I blew through the campaign, finishing it in two evenings, and I will be replaying it quite a bit. I love the fact that this game actually has more secrets (the skulls) and tons more to customize. There are very very few companies in this world that near perfection in what they do. Microsoft is NOT one them, but Bungie is - at least right now. People should not be so pigheaded that they can't recognize excellence when they see it. Thanks Bungie, for making, in my opinion, a perfect game. Expand

I don't care what people said about hype and graphics and all that... Halo 3 is a masterpiece, regardless of "how short the campaign is"... they took all of the good stuff from Halo CE, made it better, and put it in the game. Plus, all the stuff that made Halo 2 fun (not much, personally) and put that in too. They even added more than that to the game, which makes it even better. Perhaps it is, in single-player, a fairly conventional action shooter; but the combat is intense, visceral, and always excellent. However, it's the online aspect - the peerless multiplayer and, especially, features such as saved films and Forge - that will keep this game alive for years. The benchmark of online gaming.

Even though gamers were promised a truly epic tale that would be virtually impossible for any game to live up to, I think Halo 3 comes very close, not having bought into the hype and read anything about it before I bought it. Online play is excellent, game variants and maps, along with a constant supply of opponents keep it going for as long as you can.

While Halo 3 may not have the polished, efficient appeal of other shooters such as Call of Duty 4, Halo 3 has the soul that other games lack. Despite some obvious flaws in multiplayer gameplay, Halo 3 is the definitive FPS on the 360. And definitely my favorite.

The campaign, however, was far too short. This is the greatest flaw of Halo 3. Minor technical issues were noted here and there, and the marines AI definently has its problems. I've asked about a million people why they hate bush, and they can't give me an answer. I don't like bush, but I at least know why I don't like him. Same with Halo. They can't say why they hate it, except for reasons that they hear other people say. It's too bad so many people try so hard to fit in.

I have to admit that after getting Halo 2 I said I would never go along with the hype again, since it really let me down. It turned out to be nothing like I had expected. But several years later I let it get the best of me again. However, for whatever reason, I was not even remotely disappointed with this one. I expected there to be little alteration to the multiplayer. I was right, but I have to admit that after getting Halo 2 I said I would never go along with the hype again, since it really let me down. It turned out to be nothing like I had expected. But several years later I let it get the best of me again. However, for whatever reason, I was not even remotely disappointed with this one. I expected there to be little alteration to the multiplayer. I was right, but everything that was changed, fixed 90% of the problems that I had with the multiplayer of the second. Then I got into the single player. At first, I was captivated. I was looking at the Chief in new shiny clothes and everything felt fresh. I played for a few hours and found, as expected, that the experience got a bit monotonous, but advancing the wrap-up to the story made the trip well worth it. I don't know how everyone else feels, but in my opinion that was a great finalization to the trilogy. And that ending was brilliant, I feel that while they finished off the saga, they could easily pick it back up again with a sequel or a prequel, whatever they feel would work. I feel like I am still playing H2 however. I know it's different, and I know that it handles a bit differently, but ultimately I was left with the feeling that I was playing H2 but with updates giving me new items. This may be a bit critical of me seeing as they are part of the same series and a totally different scheme would be outrageous, but maybe I was just expecting some of the things that I was hoping for from H2 that I never got. My other complaint would be that there is little to no character development here. I wanted to know more about Master Chief, and Sergeant Johnson, and learn more about Gravemind and the forerunners. Yet the only character I found any more depth into was Cortana. I know Bungie fully endorses the books as official pieces to the mythos. But this is Halo a game, not a series of books. I shouldn't have to read a book to know about the characters and the story behind this conflict. It should unfold throughout the game. And maybe that is what they hope to do with Halo Wars, and whatever new Halo games they plan to bring out. Expand

It had great graphics and fixed loads of the major flaws from Halo 1 and 2, and was one heck of alot of fun at lots of points, but it was far too short and the story wasn't at all thought through. But, if you ignore that fact and treat it as a way of enjoying yourself rather than an epic 3D storybook, its incredibly fun to play. The multiplayer doesn't realy add anything new but, having said that, it's also incredibly fun to play. Over a year after first getting it, i'm still playing it, because it is such a great way to pass time with your mates, or people you meet online. What I like most about the game is that Bungie have finaly seen fit to add some new innovative features - such as film playback and Forge - which all work realy well. But, in normal circumstances, the few innovations and new things that Bungie have added wouldnt be enough to make a new game out of, and it is fairly clear that Bungie are using Halo's fandom and success to make more money out of the franchise, but they do it so well that we simply can't complain. Halo 3 has its flaws, but they are greatly surpassed by its strengths. Let's start with the flaws. The single player in this game was simply... average, maybe even bad. The storyline was hard to get into and you never felt an attachment to the characters. Aside from this there were very few moments in the single player that really gave me chills or seemed "Epic". Aside from the single player, which is bad, the multiplayer is great. The only problem with the multiplayer is the fact that many people in the Halo community are immature jerks who enjoy making other peoples' game experience unenjoyable. The rest of the multiplayer is flawless. Controls and weapon systems are top notch, and battles are exciting. The gameplay requires a huge amount of skill, at least compared to most FPS's. I've played many of the FPS's that people always say are more skillful than Halo (Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament III, Team Fortress 2, Gears of War 2, Call of Duty Games, and a few older FPS's.) and Halo beats many of these by a large margin. (From a skill perspective). I usually do well in matches and am considered and consider myself (atleast when I was good at Halo a while ago, before I started playing Fallout 3) a good Halo 3 player and I still run into many people who could easily destroy me. Overall, Halo 3 has a very lackluster storyline with an amazing multiplayer, but if you're looking for a compelling single player, try Half-Life 2 or Bioshock. Expand

First of all don't listen to these guys who give 0 - 4. Its far from the truth. All this stuff about how bad the campaign is and stuff is only "compared" to Halo 1 and 2. For an XBox360 it rules and is really good and multiplayer is about as fun as it gets. It is great and never gets boring. Buy the game.

Its clear to most people that halo 3 is a great game. People who claim it is overhyped are right, but thats not to say its not a great game, its like pretending a demi-god is a god ; It wont live up to what everyone expects, but its still pretty damn good. People say the SP is dissapointing but thats just not true, and its also not just for the devoted follower of halo. Before I played Its clear to most people that halo 3 is a great game. I have since played COD 4, 5 and UT, GOW2 and still I keep coming back to halo 3. People just need to shut up, forget what they think about a game seires or fanboys and just play the game. SP was so good i bought h2 + 1 to play the whole thing. The less "insta-kill" style of play does not make for a less skillful game, but allows a more team based TDM setup. If on COD I run around w/o talking to my team it makes little difference but on halo it will ensure you fall behind (unless in FFA). The MP is awesome. The game types are varied and interesting and every weeked there is double exp WITH A NEW GAMETYPE. Incredibly fun, better to play with friends than any other FPS, satisfying. Dont listen to the haters or the COD fanboys, this game is the best FPS on a next-gen console so far. Peace out. Expand

Anybody who knows anything about FPS or online shooters knows that Halo (entire trilogy) is among the most evolutionary and revolutionary shooters of all time. Anybody who gives this below a 9 is kidding themselves. This game is easily the best mulitplayer shooter of all time. By miles. I, personally, thought COD4 was garbage.

The campaign wasn't amazing but it was decent and quite fun to play through in co-op. While the single player is probably only worth a 7 alone, the multiplayer more than made up for it. I'd played it that much that other games never got a look in at the time. Looking forward to ODST now.

However, multiplayer is THE BEST compared to any console game, and it's even better than most pc multiplayer shooters. Forge, and theater modes are also an AMAZING additions!! The reason I'm giving this a perfect score is because it accomplished everything it set out to do. The plot is certainly an improvement over Halo 2's, and as always there is great multiplayer (with a huge amount of different modes to play from). This game deserves a solid 9. The multi-player, while lacking the strategy of a Tom Clancy title or the cover system of GOW, still stands above the competition. The amazing set of features plus a thrilling action experience makes it a multi-player gem. This however is not the main hook of halo 3; at least not for me. Foe me it's single-player. I decided to comment because of Peter A's deluded comments that were near the top of this list. His first complaint was with the lack of graphical improvements over Halo 2. I can assure you the graphics for Halo 3 have been refined extremely. Certainly, it uses the same engine, but play Halo 3 and then play Halo 2, and you will see amazing differences. His second complaint was that the multiplayer was too similar to Halo 2's multiplayer, which is funny to me because one of the single largest complaints in the Bungie community is regarding how DIFFERENT Halo 3's multiplayer is from Halo 2's. Certainly, they are based on the same premises and rules. However, the subtleties and dynamics have been altered dramatically. He references the sudden appearance of powerups, which have actually be a Halo staple since Halo: CE, which, if you'll recall, is the very first Halo game. That right there should be reason enough to have his comment removed and his vote disqualified. He obviously has no idea what game he's playing. As for adding Forge to Halo 2, it's not quite that simple. And it astounds me he didn't mention the theater mode, which is a milemarker in game development. I've also seen no mention of the depth to which the game is integrated with Bungie.Net. The bottom line is that I'm still playing this game almost daily two years after its launch. So are almost 1 million other gamers. That very fact that proves the longevity and replayablility of this game warrants a 9, in my opinion. The game isn't perfect, but it does what it does very well. And it's significant to the industry in terms of development. Expand

  1. It's the addition of the Forge level editor and the saved films that give the game an even longer set of legs, legs that will probably keep you running at full speed until Bungie figures out where, exactly, to go from here.
  2. Halo 3 is the best Xbox 360 game to date. The single-player campaign and storyline are both very strong, but it's Forge and the Saved Films features that will likely go down in history as Bungie's crowning achievements. They've basically taken everything great about the series and improved upon it in every way, then added some amazing new features that we'll be using for years to come.

It's solid gameplay, immense replayability, online functionality and incredible production values will ensure its place in video game history, and it is, without a doubt, a satisfying and fulfilling close to the beloved trilogy[?].
