A stunning technical achievement that includes a world full of detail, stunning graphics, incredible storyline/voice acting. Anyone who rates this 0 is a cynical loser who thinks going against the grain and down-rating a popular game makes them smart or better than everyone else, and nothing will ever appease them.

Sure it's smooth, violent, edgy, and huge. However, it is still the same game it was when GTA 3 came out. So little has changed except for the graphics that I got bored in under 2 hours. I'm pretty sure the only reason it scores so high is that Junior High kids love any game that says F&%K. Screw Rockstar games and the dusty old horse they rode in on ( and charged $60 for).

George F, you have no credibility whatsoever. "Subpar graphics"? When were you born? 2112, maybe, when graphics are more realistic than real life itself? Don't mind that an ENTIRE CITY is crammed into a game with very minimal load time. Don't mind that people react realistically depending on what part of the body you shoot. Don't mind the realistic crash physics. The storyline is quite good, but you may think otherwise because you were born in a rich neighborhood that were ignorant of the social depravities and injustices occurring only a few blocks down. The gameplay is incredible, due to the exact OPPOSITE reason you provide. The missions are NOT repetitive, and the driving system is spectacular. Watch as the environment blurs as you put your foot to the pedal and watch it realistically crumple as you crash into another car. And since the game is shooting up "the same 10 fake people every three hours" and is for "passive-aggressive thugs," you gave it to your brother. Good job, troll, and trust me, there are other games that actually deserve zeroes.
The only problem with this game is it's mission setup. When you fail, it takes you back from the beginning with less money and lost weapons depending on how you failed the quest. Another small flaw that I didn't really mind was the radio. It got smaller compared to the previous GTA. The GPS system was a very nice addition to the game. This game was definitely better than GTA3: Vice City and San Andreas where you were literally hearing the world "n*gger" twice every sentence. This game is one of the deepest games out there in terms of storyline and gameplay and it blows the current "competition" out of the park (Halo, Gears, Fable, I'm looking at you!).

Grand Theft Auto 4 took GTA to a next-gen level. Everything about this game is polished and fine tuned. Visually the whole city is a treat to the eyes. From outstanding animation to the life of the city, you will at, one point. end up cruising the city to see the life and visuals that it supplies (which are rather impressive for such a large map.) The best part is the steady framerate. Almost always 40-50 FPS. I only expeirenced about three dips in framerate and one was because I blew about 20 cars up all at once (don't ask how *cough gas station cough*)Now onto the gameplay. I found that the controls were tight and became natural at one point. I never once had to say, "How do I go to cover." It's all well mapped onto the 360/PS3 controller. The guns feel real and have fantastic SFX that go with them (I go to gun ranges and the AK sounds like an AK.) My personal favorite thing about this game is the physics. I'm not just talking about the environment (which quite a few things break in: fences. poles, benches, statues, etc...) I'm talking about the cars. Not one car feels the same as the other. All handle differently and realistically. You will learn to be a good driver, but those who bash it are just naturally bad drivers. The single player (which starts out a little slow and takes a little while to get into to) will last you a fantastic MINIMUM of 17 hours. That is my fastest time. But, if you spend your time in a fun manner, without the side stuff, you will get about 40-60 hours of gameplay. No joke. With side stuff (which I'm so close to completing) I've logged 137 hours. No life right :D. The story is PHENOMENAL while the characters grow on you (except your fat ass cousin Roman) and you will begin to actually feel for them. I personally think Dwayne, Little Jacob and Dwayne are some of the most real people you'll meet in this game. Preferably Dwayne, but most of all you will become attached to Niko, the main character. You feel for him, he came to this country to get away from the war and horror of his country and also too [***SPOILER***] sorry. And as he progresses through the city and builds up a reputation, you feel for him. His coldness just gets too you and makes you find him mysterious and odd. You will become attached to him and the characters he meets. Not onto the multiplayer, which is surprisingly robust! There are 14 modes total and all are outrageously fun. I prefer free mode because you and friends can explore the city and find stuff to do. Whilst there are the basic modes: TDM & DM, there fantastically orgional ones that actually revolve around characters from the story: Kenny Petrovic missions and so on, Hangman NOOSE (extract VIP from airport to extraction point) and Bomb Da Base II (hijack an armored car, take to heliport, fly helicopter to boat, plant bomb, run like hell [almost forgot! KILL EVERYBODY!] BIG BOOM!). Then there are other modes like ruling different points in the city, gang wars, etc... Overall I found this game so detailed and refreshing that I had to give it a 10. It's a game you must give your respect to due to its insane amount of detail and story plus others. Buy this game or not, just give it a try. Expand

Grand Theft Auto IV is takes itself too seriously for a game that is supposed to be about having fun in an open world. It also includes boring settings and lackluster graphics that drag it down further. The game is a step away from what made the previous versions good and you would be better off playing a game like Saint's Row.

Did I play the same game that the major reviewers played? This game is BORING. The spark that made the past few games truly great is completely gone.

This isn't a chink in the armor; this is a fundamental flaw in this series, and I hope it's corrected before the next one comes out, because I miss GTA.

Rockstar must've been thinking, "Let's take every GTA we've created and release it on 360 as GTA IV." Subpar graphics, storyline, and gameply are all a thorn in the side of this overrated monstrosity. Character and car customizations are essentially gone along with the planes and bikes. The missions are pretty cut and dry (chase this guy and kill this guy). There are no rewards besides xbox achievements and 100% completion for doing most anything. The available arsenal is stripped down with very few weapon choices It seems like much of the effort that was put into the fun free-for-all feel of SA and VC was transferred over to things like dating and bowling, which are more annoying than fun. I don't play GTA to date girls and take friends to play pool. I'll play the Sims if I want to do that. I play it because of the almost limitless opportunities to create havoc and humor. Additionally, the single player campaign and story is pretty decent, though not quite as good as VC and SA. I wouldn't say it's disappointing however. Overall, it's still a GTA game. It's great fun and has a pretty solid campaign. What I don't understand is why Rockstar seems to be putting a limit on how fun the game should be. San Andreas was far from broke, so I don't know what they were trying to fix by stripping it down. My only guess and hope is that they want the room to hype up future releases. Lowering the bar so that you can raise it later isn't progress, and I'd expect Rockstar to know better. Expand

The whole 'you killed my cousins wife so I kill you' storyline to it was horrible, there were loads of loose ends (eg. more missions with playboy/his friend depending on who you kill) For this reason it only gets a 7.

Those games focused on mindless, silly action (which is not at all a bad thing), while this game is all about character development and realism, emphasis on the real, giving the series something it never had and separating itself from typical sandbox games. Think of gta iii's games as lethal weapons. and gta iv as the godfather. (When i say this i dont mean gta iv is superior, just that its more serious and real.) With San Andreas perfecting the style they aimed for in the gta iii series, it was definitely the right move to go with a different approach for the start of a new grand theft auto. The AI is so realistic that yes, if unskilled, civilians might be able to beat you in a fight, (for better explanation of how awesome the AI is, read game informer's review) . The driving is so good that i consider that handling (while sometimes so unforgiveably realistic depending on the condition of your car, popped tires, dented frame, etc. *Not a bad thing, if anything this immerses you further into the world of the game) to rival some of my favorite racing games. To use a remark made by game informer, the gunplay's auto aim (optional) makes you feel like a skilled assassin. These features only name a few. If you are a fan of the series, and by some ungodly miracle you don't have this game yet, i want you to run outside, jack the nearest car, and go buy this game. just don't expect it like anything you've ever played. If you play this game with the mindset that its an improved san andreas, it's gonna ruin your experience. As for online, i wouldnt really recommend deathmatch or any of the typical online game modes. however cops n crooks, gta race and the others are pure gold. Free mode is something entirely different. Free mode with friends is just one of those things that seems like a simple idea, messin around in liberty city with ur friends. Sounds fun on paper, but turns out to be phenomenal when you're playing. Ive never had so much fun in any online game. at first you and ur friends will probobaly kill each other over and over until one of you try to set up some kind of truce, and that is when u realize how many possibilities there are. While you can turn off things like cops and traffic, or just play party mode so you can do what ever you want with no consequences, why would you want to? Everybody teamed up while the cops are shooting to kill, watching eachother's backs and fending off swat teams, fbi, and police officers. You feel like youre in an action movie. i remember in particular stealing one of the swat team's armored trucks, screamin at my friends in excitement, tellin them to get in the car. we were all piled in, at least a 5 * wanted level, destroying everything that came at us. it creates this feeling of friendship and connection that I can garentee youve never felt before. it feels like you are in some sort of actiono movie. explosions of enemy cars on both sides of you, the grinding noises of the cops to the left and the right of you, trying to run you off the road. there are bodies flying through the air, high speed chases worthy of any james bond or die hard movie..There are so many moments that make you say : "Oh shit! NO WAY! NO FUCKING WAY! ARE WE REALLY DOING THIS? WE'RE FUCKING RAPING THESE COPS! This is fucking amazing." It models exactly how online gaming should be. Then there are light moments, racing in lawnmowers and forklifts down the runway of an airport is more fun than it sounds, possibly because of the physics of the game, the simplest things can make you step back and say "wow". Trying to describe the game in words is almost a crime against nature, describing it in person might cause you to be at a loss for words, and watching the game be played still wont give you much of a feel about how it actually feels to control Niko. This game is a game that you can't possibly regret buying (do not rent!) If you have some sort of super human ability to still be unsure of wether or not you should buy this game message me on xbox live gamertag: gamezombie009. grand theft auto IV is a game that is impossible to ignore. i havent even mentioned the xbl downloadable content thats coming out in february. grand theft auto IV is worth so much more than 60 bucks. This is by no means a bad game, its not a great one though either. Aside from what has already been pointed out about the uselessness of money, poor multiplayer and repetitive everything! This game was really killed (my vocabulary is very limited, I know) by the lack of enjoyment after finishing the campaign and also the developers choice to go down a more realistic path..... Bad move Rockstar.

It is itself a brilliant game, but not enough has improved over the last 3 3D GTA games to warrant garnering a maximum rating from nearly every reviewer. For Immersion in a game world it recieves about a 95 but for gameplay it wanes down to about a 70, purely because we have seen it all before!

One of the best games ever, story is great and you get to make choices that can change the direction the story goes in. Multiplayer is good too, a great laugh with mates. The only reason to not give it a 10 is the pop ups, I knew the game would have random pop ups due to the speed you can tear around a gigantic city that is so very detailed. A must own for all gaming fans.

Disappointment City. 30 minutes into the game and I was feeling like I was playing early GTA games. Better graphics, but the storyline and running from cops got a little old in early GTA games, so doing it again in this entry doesn't warrant the rave reviews placed on the game.

This game suffers from shoddy graphics, shoddy sound, shoddy play control, a lack of direction at certain points in the game... But despite all of that remains a heck of a lot of fun to play. I still can't believe so many critics labeled this defective game 100. There's no reason for that kind of over-hyped score. This game is nowhere near a 100, but it is a lot of fun to play.

    The graphics are undoubtedly sweet.
I don't like auto lock, pull trigger half way deal.
It would have been so easy to make RB the lock and dedicate LT for manual aim.
The driving while initially frustrating becomes fun.
You just have to plan your skids A LOT earlier.
Now I can get away from the cops pretty quickly because I know how to time it.
With that in mind it's still not the carefree driving experience of San Andreas but there are good times to be had.
In fact, a car I hated for it's lack on control in the beginning has become my favorite because it's got tons of power and I can now control it (Stallion).
    The soundtrack sucks!!!
Other than like 5 songs it's a major disappointment.
Every other station is just hip-hop, reggae, rap... With San Andreas you had a few stations for everyone.
I've played this game enough to have found a station I like by now and I have found nothing.
Yes, the game and missions have a been there done that feel.
this is one of the first feelings I had when playing the game.
I was hoping for something new but it was not to be.
I felt bored pretty quickly because of this and more than that disappointed.
Given that there were no better games to be found on the 360, or at least in my possession, I continued to play and have had tons of fun.
Taxis can save a TON of time and keep the wait between action to a minimum.
At this point I use taxis as a rule and drive only when necessary.
Even with this philosophy there'splenty of driving and enjoyment.
What I've found really enjoyable is the combat.
After a long time I'm used to the targeting deal and can reliably keep from pulling the trigger all the way and ruining the experience.
However, a lot of that is because I've been there before.
Any new experience might jolt me and cause a knee jerk auto lock.
Again, RB should be auto lock and leave LT dedicated to free aim!
Nevertheless I am really enjoying going through the combat missions again and very rarely die.
I dig the shotgun and like switching guns during combat.
I'd like it if he walked a little faster during adrenalin moments and if the sneak elements were present that would be cool.
I snuck onto a site with tons of enemies and it would have been cool to take them all out silently with a knife or silencer.
The problem is that they don't sell knives at the gun shops and there are no silencers!!!
If you ever lose your knife from the beginning mission you can't get it back.
I'm sure I'm wrong about the knife deal but it's definitely not easy to find a knife and I'm through the game a second time; I'll try Jacob's deal to see if he has knives before I completely cry foul.
The strip clubs are fun and even though the girls run through their routine with the same enthusiasm that a real stripper would they are legitimately exciting.
Ammo is way too expensive, especially for the rocket launcher.
They force you to pay attention to a woman near the end of the game and yet she's bugly!
I liked her personality enough even though she was too extreme: see prude & righteous.
But like I said she was friggin' hard to look at.
The second time through she's been getting the cold shoulder.
The friend thing is a friggin waste of time.
It would be nice to hang with these people but they could have achieved that in several different ways: on the way to missions, during cut scenes, etc...
The only reason to do it is to get the friend's bonus so there could have been a better way to achieve this.
Interestingly, I find the game more playable because the main character is not upgradeable.
If he had been ungradeable it would have been hard to start over with him at a weaker state.
It's really just the weapons that distinguish the beginning from the end.
I would like to see remote grenades for dealing with pesky swarms of cops who don't like it when you kill their coworkers.
The boating stuff is a waste of time but shooting down helicopters with a rocket launcher NEVER gets old.
I'd like to have seen more execution options like in Godfather; in that game you could really go on a rampage.
The rocket launcher is a total blast but like I said it's $$$.
The vigilante missions are different and limited in number and that last part sucks. It's nice for game completion but I'd prefer a San Andreas version with ever increasing difficulty. They do offer current crimes but neither type brings any money so that's a bummer. Money in this game becomes too important and significantly hinders fun. I stole a car once after a good amount of prep work and got $1,000.00 for it. Hi, that's the price of one grenade! Just make rocket launcher shells $2,000, instead of 5, and we'll all be happy. Overall I give it an 85 out of 100. I look forward to the next iteration.

I often found myself throwing the controller away from myself in disgust after failing for the third straight time and facing the prospect of driving for another 3 minutes to survive only 20 seconds of combat. Additionally, the lack of freedom initially makes the game less appetizing to people who desired the open world aspect. I'm all for unlockable content throughout the game, but for the majority of what I played, it seemed as though I was confined by walls which could not be passed through. I didn't even know about the ability to get in boats until well after I had reached my frustration point in the game. Undoubtably it is a good game, but several flaws keep it from being really "fun." The action is great, the graphics are insane when you think of how much is going on at any given time, the voice acting is some of the best you'll ever find in a game, the story is engrossing and gritty. So yes this is a great game don't get me wrong, but it has a few core-game flaws. As everyone's mentioned, the mission fail system is terrible. Having to drive the same route five times to get to the same guy 5 times to try those 5 times to figure out what you're doing wrong gets old extremely fast. Since most of the missions consist of getting to the action; placing you just before the action when respawning would have made a world of difference. Another thing I seem to have in common with others here is the multiplayer complaints. It just simply isn't that fun. There is one redeeming quality in the multiplayer though. If you can do as I had the chance to and get yourself and a few friends and just run together terrorizing to city you'll definately be pleased. That was some of the most fun I've had gaming in a long time. The only problem is that I'm sure not everyone would be able to do this, and even the fun there doesn't last forever. As far as good things go though this game can be great, you just have to get over the whole mission fail system for the most part, because otherwise there's a ton of good story here to play though. I would say wait until it price drops some. I know it'll be awhile, but I was able to play it for free since my cousin got tired of it and lent it to me; and even then I somehow knew that I would have been horribly dissapointed if I'd dropped 60 bucks on this. The cellphone "keep your friends happy thing" was interesting but got to be super annoying before you finish the main story line. If you had enough friends all you would be doing is going out on date after date and not doing anything else. The graphics were very well done, but i'm not sure if I quite agreed with the choice to move away from the previous cell shaded titles. The wardrobe interface was inadequate. None of the clothing had a name once it was in your wardrobe and many of the shoes looked exactly alike. Flipping one at a time through your selection of clothes was laborious at best. It was very obvious that rockstar was trying to appease the ratings board. The realistic modeling of being drunk (the cops instantly knowing when you were drunk, even after you had stopped randomly serving was not realistic). Even though you got "warm coffee" within the very first date with michelle and they appeared to be thumbing their nose at the review board, in reality it was too much an easy gimmee and there seemed little else remarkable about it. The cellophone idea was pretty cool, esp the option to dialup ZIT to get the name of the song and artist currently playing on the radio. There was a decent variety of radio stations, but still needed the ability to play custom MP3 playlists. I'm not sure why all the big review sites gave this game such high scores, the game was fun yes, but not awe inspiring. I think if you look at the playing publics score you will see a more realict score and not one that makes the game reviewers look like corporate shills. A good review means nothing when everything they review gets the same scores. Throwing in a lame duck game review of something like Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis, does not balance out all the 90+ scores given out these days. In conclusion, the game had it's good moments but I felt like there was always something missing from the experience. Expand

This game took away a lot of the features that made the series good. It is a mediocre title at best and should not have recieved the critical acclaim that it has.

I don't want to play crap bar games or waist time picking some one up to go eat when they live on the other end of town. They should have just made it that going out 3 times with a person equalled 100% fondness cause. The story for one isn't very intense... I read some interviews where the developers mentioned how they didn't want this one to be "cinematic." Whatever that may have meant, they sure seemed to have pulled it off with a somewhat bland story line, and a very unsatisfying ending (for me personally). Yah, there's still a hell lot more to do with side missions, but I expected the 90 missions I had to go through in order to complete the game would have given me a lot more satisfaction.

Don't get me wrong, GTA 4 was great, but they seemed to have left out some key elements which made the other games a lot of fun. In my opinion, if they had kept a lot of elements that were in San Andreas, and shifted them over to GTA 4, it would have made the game top notch.
Understandly, they appear to have tried to do things differently, but to me that just made for mixed personal feelings on certain aspects of the game (which very easily could have been improved).
GTA 4 stands out as one of the strongest games of its genre around, but it also could have been so much better with very simple, and small details.

I am a fan nevertheless, and you should definitely try itout!

I played both games 4 times through. Sadly, GTA4 has none of the FUN- it is just mission after mission of shooting people for employers you don't care about. The city is claustrophobic, Niko is a depressing psycho, the radio is awful, the side missions are drive rubbish car and shoot, and the motorbikes are not worth riding. What happened to the fun? This is not to say I dislike the game. On the contrary, I am madly in love with this game at the moment. However I feel that Rockstar really cheated us on this. Sure it has a great story line, better physics, better combat system, and a multiplayer mode (which may or may not be a plus to you), but for anyone who truly enjoyed San Andreas, you might feel (like me) that this one is missing something... well actually like it is missing a lot.

I don't know about anyone else, but I loved the "RPG-esque" stat building of SA. That's no where to be seen here. I also sorely miss the massive amount of clothes that were available in SA and the amount of cusotmization that this allowed. The ability to ride bicycles and airplanes was stripped from this one, which isn't a huge deal because they were rather niche aspects of the game, but still, I loved them. And an even bigger slap to the face for me was that the whole world map, was downsized by a sickening amount. All the country side to explore, all the desert to wonder around, all the little places in between cities, all has been erased in this sequel.

Still, you would have to have some serious mental disorder to hate this game. The awesome "rags to riches to rags to riches once more" story line keeps you wanting to play on, and the newly redone relationship system, will constantly keep you doing something for hundreds of hours after you have completed the primary missions. This is one that you will play for hours and hours. And if that wasn't enough to keep you playing for the next several months, they even included a multiplayer system. And while I do have a number of negative things about the multiplayer, I will just say that it gets old fast due to a number of faults that it has.
In conclusion, I will say this. If the rumors are true, and the downloadable content coming this fall will actually allow us to play in san andreas again, then I will cave in and admit that this game is, in fact, perfect.

The story is so well executed, well... put it this way, its now my 3rd time playing through... and I still love it. After 2 months of solid playing I still haven't seen everything, the scope of this truly rich, beautiful and believable world is incredible. This is the game you will be talking about for years to come. Where were you when Rockstar released GTA IV??? Expand

I had really high expectations prior to the release of IV, and maybe that's why I didn't like it as much as I could have. Most things about the game are great, especially the seamless scenery, but there are some things that really bothered me while playing. The feeling that I'd done it before was what annoyed me the most. The feeling that I'd done it before was what annoyed me the most. It's almost exactly the same thing as the other games in the series, with some more detail. And the missions are basically the same thing as well. A common scenario is: "Go there, talk to a guy, go there kill some other guy, go back." Sometimes with a twist like, "kill 20 guys by yourself, and take item", added. The game was a good gaming experience, but with all the hype I expected something better. Expand

I still don't get the appeal of the series. Yes, our household owns a copy of this game but it sits in my kids room and never leaves. I am just bored with this type of game. Yes, they may have fixed the wonky physics but the underlying boredom remains. Just seems like it would appeal to a bunch of wanna be thugs to me. Nearing the end of the story, I realized that this is what Shenmue wanted to be. Hell, this is what 3, Vice, and San Andreas wanted to be. Yes, some cars handle like crap, which is the point. What I've played online, I've liked (with the damn auto-aim OFF, for god's sake). Now what's this I hear about about DLC? Can't wait. Expand

This game has poor graphics for a XBOX360 game and poor taste. It appeals to little teenagers though.

I could go on and on about why Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the best games we've ever seen and why even folks who are easily offended should play it, but that would be pointless. The only thing you need to know is that you have to play this game. Period.
