Nov 18, 2014An interesting side-story twist on Deep Silver’s first-person horror franchise, Escape Dead Island takes the franchise’s mythos in some unique new directions, resulting in an entertaining adventure that can be enjoyed by both fans and newcomers alike.
-
Dec 1, 2014Apart from that absolutely baffling meat grinder at the end, I'd still recommend Escape to fans of the mid-list. 98% of it was an enjoyable spiral into insanity, and the project could certainly stand on its own even without being attached to the Dead Island franchise -- just be ready to slog through that final bit to see how it all wraps up.
-
Dec 1, 2014The concept actually works. The change of perspective as well as the new art direction build a solid foundation. But under the surface nothing really comes together.
-
Nov 24, 2014Escape Dead Island is an action survival game that catches the eye due to its cel shaded appearance. The lack of a range of weapons and possibilities to level up makes us long for more depth. Only the bizarre story will keep you entertained in this one trick pony.
-
Dec 30, 2014With poor writing, cringeworthy dialogue and mechanics that are merely stolen from other games, it's far from anything to write home about. Still, even with these issues, it manages to be relatively fun and somewhat interesting throughout its six to eight hours.
-
Nov 30, 2014Few good ideas and a nice visual presentation quickly make way for a frustrating and repetitive experience and many technical problems.
-
X-ONE Magazine UKFeb 15, 2015A poor entry into a solid series that doesn't try to improve the experience or come up with any new ideas. Stick with the past and wait for the future. [Issue#119, p.85]
-
Edge MagazineJan 9, 2015Escape's one resounding achievement, it seems, is that it has somehow managed to be an even poorer game than Dead Island: Riptide. [Jan 2014, p.116]
-
Dec 2, 2014You really shouldn’t play Escape Dead Island. It isn’t fun, and the only real redeeming feature is that it is technically playable.
-
Nov 27, 2014With a dash more ambition, and a lot more technical coherence, at best it would only have been a middling distraction before next year's Dead Island 2. In its current form, the kindest thing would be a short, sharp stab with a screwdriver behind the ear.
-
Nov 21, 2014Offensively terrible in every way, and yet it seems not through some calculating cynicism on the part of the game makers – but just good old fashioned incompetence.
-
Nov 17, 2014While playing through Escape Dead Island, I was continually offended that anyone would be asked to pay for this experience. Any number of developmental issues could have caused this train wreck, from budgetary problems or creative crises, and we'll likely never know the whole truth. But as it stands, Escape Dead Island is worth nobody's time.
