It would be easier to point of the differences with GOW than the similarities, basically all the good stuff. what a pity..everything about the game is promising. but it's broken up by a subpar combat system. comparison with GoW was inevitable and on combat alone it was just nowhere as brutal and nowhere as fluid. Entertaining while it lasted but would not recommend it to anyone.

A bit of an older game that borrows a lot from God of War and Devil May Cry, but I'm glad that I played it despite the frustrating parts.

Dante returns home from some serious sinning in the Crusades only to find his lady murdered. He descends into Hell to save her soul from a very smoky Lucifer. Throughout his journey he is guided through nine circles of Hell by a spirit called Virgil.

The neat thing about the levels is that each one illustrates one of Dante's terrible sins during the Crusades. Especially in the first half, each section is unique and interesting. The greed section has pools of molten gold, gluttony is all mouths and teeth, all very clever.

By the second half, the designers seemed to get a bit lazy and pad out the short story with trial sections and mini bosses that all look the same. There are also way too many creature riding sections throughout and the puzzles can be frustrating.

The combat mostly devolves into button mashing, and it does get really old after a while. There is a neat set of magic spells and relics that can be found throughout the game that do make things a bit more interesting.

One more thing that is a bit bothersome-it seems like the developers realized that they could add nudity into the game and went way overboard! There is a ton of weird and awkward nakedness, both male and female. Either it's supposed to be artsy or edgy, but it feels like a thirteen year old was in charge of it.

At the end of the game I was glad that I had played it. It isn't too long and did have some really neat sections. Worth a recommendation if you can handle the flaws.

What feel to me a lot like Conan, but with (2/3rds) of a better story, and much better graphics. Needed a bit more polish. Small things like flat lighting & color pallet, lack of alternate weapons, and poor difficulty scaling prevent me from getting really into the game. The story is fine, the cut scenes are nice, and the basic combat is enjoyable (though not as tight as one might expect from a high budget action game). Worth playing once.

I think this game was a pleasent supprise. I was expecting a cheap GOW ripoff, its not, its fun. Graphics are good, the levels are of great variety. Could be a couple more bad guys would be nice, but its good. All in all a well done game. Does it compete with GOW 3 ? I dont know, i have a 360 so thats a moot point. A decent 3rd-person hack and slasher. Dante's Inferno takes the 13th century poem.. and interprets it into an excuse to chop up hell's demons. And it works well. You could pick up most other genre titles, and rate them on their comparison to God of War. Dante's Inferno does set itself apart from this a little, with it's biblical(ish) storyline, and handful of unique novelties, but sadly, comes across as another slog of button mashing. The extra game modes (and DLC) are simply added stages of infinite demons. Worth buying if you want to see the devs take on Aligheri's poem, or if your a beat 'em up/hack and slash fan who wants something just a little different. Expand

It was ok. Its entertaing for a bit but it gets rather old and repetitive pretty quickly. Unoriginal combat system. Outstanding voice acting though and it makes the cut scenes seem like its a mini-animated film within the game. The potential is there.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After just playing this game, i was partially disappointed with it. It had bright moments such as the games plot and the amount of moves available to the player. It also had great graphics and the puzzles were all a challenge to the player. But with that said the games length was to much, for the short ending that was given. The circles of hell leading up to the final battle and the final boss battle itself was epic. With that said i only gave this game a 7/10 its had a great many ups but also a few poorly placed downs. Expand

Above all I will commend this game on utterly gorgeous art direction and visuals. Every moment is like a visual orgasm. The gameplay itself on the otherhand is really where it falters. It isn't bad, just nothing that we really haven't seen before. Not only that, the combat mechanic, while smooth and fun to play, is also really lacking in any real range and is rather limited. Dante’s Inferno takes a bold, visually impressive take on a literary classic and adds in an intriguing action focus to create a different kind of action title. Aggressively average, and a dubious journey into the heart of the story as set forward by Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. While not necessarily failing in any respect, it does not do anything to stand out of its own accord. If seperated from the story it was trying to tell, it would have died on the shelves. And while in a sense it did, the game is certainly entertaining enough to not feel like a chore playing through. What it steals from God of War, it steals with mixed results. The experience feels very funneled, and the slow points are thoroughly punctuated by boredom, but the art style that accompanies at all, combined with the marvelous sound design and genuine effort that was at least attempted to put into this with varied results do make for an okay game.

I find this game hard to criticize, because as a depiction of my favourite bit of western literature, I desperately wanted it to have more of the soul of the story it was depicting, and less of the exaggerated, game-y story that it ultimately ended up having. However, I also understand that you cannot expect a game to sell when you are wandering through Hell as a scared poet. It underdelivered, perhaps, on my lofty expectations, and that is not a fault on the game but rather my high hopes for it.

To try and summarize, the game is fine. It's good. It's playable with no major faults or frustrations that do not befit a game. But it could be a lot better with perhaps a bit more time or budget.

Good combat, repetitive gameplay, repetitive enemy designs, and a shoddy attempt at making the game longer through making things unfair and tedious. Amazing that a game studio has such a solid start to a game, and then promptly invalidates all the fun I had for the last half of it. Can't believe this came out of the same studio as Dead Space - thank god they didn't screw that game up like this. Expand

Now for the bad. There are some gimmicky boss fights involving puzzles, and some annoying QTE sequences, but I can excuse them as being an artifact of games that were released during that time. What I can't excuse are the number of frustrating platforming sections you have to solve with the imprecise jumping controls,

What's the worst are the number of timed sections there are in this game. The developers love time limits, and it seems like every other puzzle or switch is tied to one. Combine this with the squirrelly jumping segments and obnoxious puzzles, and you're in for a bad time.

There were too many unfun parts of the game where I was trying to figure out what the developers wanted me to do, and afraid to try something, because failing would mean doing the whole puzzle sequence from the start.

To their credit though, the checkpoints are fairly generous.

All in all, it's a short and fun game, and well worth playing through once if you like GoW/DmC.

  1. The accomplished combat and surprisingly decent adaptation of the story make Dante's Inferno a fine diversion while you wait for the next button-masher... One based in a different set of mythology.
  2. Another major annoyance is the save system. You can only save at designated statues, and there are only two or three per level.
  3. All in all, it was a fun trip though hell, even with one circle being lackluster and the game feeling rather short, I still have no issues or moral objections to recommending Dante's Inferno for fans of this genre.
