Call of Duty IS on the way out but I cant say I think its lost its touch just yet.t. Expand

And speaking of multiplayer, why is everyone complaining about mw3 being similar mw2? Mw2 was great. So let me give you an unbiased review. So far, I am thoroughly enjoying this game. The campaign is visually-stimulating, grand in scale, and highly immersive. Spec Ops, accounting for the new addition of Survival mode, is probably worth close to $60 to most FPS fans in and of itself. Multiplayer sticks with the tried and true (and extremely fun) formula, but there are enough changes and improvements to keep it fresh for another year. Yes, I have been a fan of CoD since CoD4, and there is nothing wrong with that. Yes, I would probably pay $60/year for new maps, perks, killstreaks, weapons, etc., and there is nothing wrong with that either. That doesn't mean I can't be fair and objective in my analysis of the game, a tactic that seems to be lost on some of the previous simple-minded reviewers. But, there are other changes and additions and improvements to this game that make it well worth the money. This game is very enjoyable if you get over yourself, mature past the emotional age of 16, and realize that Activision quite obviously has a very successful formula that they're not willing to stray TOO far away from. If you're that shallow that you expect a COMPLETELY different game with every installment (as many other less successful franchises are forced to create), maybe you should try a different title. It's not difficult. BF3 fanboys can go sit on a railroad spike. Your mere presence here is all the indication the world needs that the Battlefield franchise is nowhere near where it wants to be or where CoD is and has been for 4-5 years. As made evident from their reviews, If I were to total up the IQ of all the reviewers that have left a score of '0' on here, I would come up with a number not much greater than the rating they gave the game. At this point, COD is not going to change. If you thought you were going to boot up the disc and your character was going to be a small furry wolf shooting skittles and skipping on clouds, you're an idiot. The ground rules for COD are set a this point. You're going to kill people. You're going to have perks. You're going to have killstreaks. You're going to play game modes designed to kill people, to hold flags, to capture flags, or to blow stuff up. Sure there will be little wrinkles in each release, but at this point COD is less like a video game and more like a sport-- like football or basketball. The variety comes not in the changes to the rules, but in changes in the people you play against. Activision will not, and should not, dramatically reinvent this game every year. So IMO, the best you can do as a legitimate critic is to rate the game based on how the game plays, based on map design, and based on overall execution. Half these "zero" reviewers didn't even need to buy the game to complain about the things they're whining about, so they're not doing anyone a service with the reviews. If you don't like COD, just don't buy the game ever again and shut up.

So after all that, I'll say that the game appears to be an improvement over Modern Warfare 2. Gone are many of the player abuses from that game-- the constant grenade launching, commando knifing, etc. Only time will tell if new abuses will arise and how responsive Infinity Ward will be to fixing them. I like the addition of weapon proficiencies, where they have moved some of the weapon specific perks from previous installments. It's too early to tell what the full impact of the new killstreak system will be to gameplay, but the game does seem more frantic because so many killstreaks are active. That could hurt the quality of play in the long term. But the variety of having assault, support, and specialist killstreaks will also keep the game fresh so it's a balance. None of the new game types (kill confirmed, etc.) will supplant favorites like TDM or Domination but they do provide some interesting variety. The maps in this game are small, making this one of the fastest paced COD games, but it will take in the game to give a fair review of the map design. But for right now, I'd say this game is an 8 of 10.

I had fun with it, multiplayer is there and there are differences. Map design for MP though is very restrictive. Actually that is what turned me off of it more than anything else. No large maps like Afghan or Wasteland from MW2. If you're a fan of the series you've already bought it, but for newcomers there is enough there to warrant a purchase between SP, MP, and CO-Op modes.

After a week of soaking up the game in it's entirety, I find it very hard to give a review score for a game that is split into 2 very different parts.

    Part 1 Campaign.

For me, this was extremely good. I had zero disc graphics lag and the game ran very smooth, reminded me of a stripped back version of MW2 which most COD4 fans would adore. The waves of opposition came at a good rate, with the odd cheeky guy waiting to pounce to catch you off guard, to help it look less linear. The target hits was somewhat off, but another burst of fire made me forget that, unlike BF3.

The ending was nicely dramatised and left me feeling like I had achieved 'THE END' which gave me hell at the point where I switched elevator's in a sweet little jump. I found the roomful of guys extremely hard to beat until I realised the tactic was to hold back in the lift foyer. Nice all-round game I thought.

    Part 2 MultiPlayer.

Started off quite well, I played it for approx 1 hour before the servers were closed on Wednesday 2nd Nov for a while. I jumped back onto it on saturday 5th Nov for a good old gaming session, which once again seemed really great, plus I love the set-up of 99% of the new maps.

It all started to go slightly sour for me online at approx 7pm when I had difficulty killing people who weren't even shooting back, then would turn around and 1 or 2 shot me. I was wondering why the transformation had occured and put it down to my quite impressive connection of 100mb, but it simply kept happening even as far as the 8th Nov.

It seems there is the usual graphical 'hold-back' whereby anyone on a great connection can't see the opposition as fast as they should be able to, to 'even' the broadband speeds up. OH how wrong they have got this side of the game. Same as BlackOps.

When are the people in charge of latency going to realise that those with higher spec broadband, have paid for this to improve their gameplay, not to be used as a server, not to be killed by a guy who I am shooting who is currently facing the other way till he see's my bullets pass through him, turns round and 1 shot kills me stone dead. This is classed as gameplay interference and should be cut dead from the activision servers RIGHT NOW. You are targeting high end broadband or uniquely good killers, in favour of 3mb broadband or noob users, which I cannot stress enough, is ruining the fundamentals of the game for these, the most dedicated of your users.

The game has outsold BOPS and based on the campaign I know it is better, same MW2, but the online is where most players will travel and even though the campaign deserves a 9 the online deserves a 5.

Sort out the online and I will give you a 10 next time - but don't cheat the system, cut the bull and stop lagging out the high-end user. He is the guy with the money BTW. You are using an archaic system on this side of the fence which does not work in the UK half as well as you may have planned. In short - SORT YOUR MESS OUT!

Consoles are limited because the hardware can not be upgraded, like a PC. So how can a developer really improve the software if they are limited on hardware limitations? What I can appreciate is the smooth frame rate that is achievable in this game. I found Battlefield 3 to be a little choppy (on the consoles) since it could only reach 30 frames per second however I do like the game play in Battlefield. Ask yourself, did you enjoy the other Call of Duty releases? If so, then this is an easy pick for you. I only wish they could of added a function to match players online to certain age groups. That way I don't have to hear the nasty obscenities being thrown at me from a 10 year old that just learned his first cuss word. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OK, so I have played quite a bit of this game so far and I will admit that it is more of the same, but to the point where you don't really care anymore. The new improvements are really good (Call of Duty Elite is great) and the new "Pointstreaks" give everyone a chance and they are all really well balanced. The campaign side was pretty bland, kind of like Battlefield 3 but we all know that multiplayer is where it's at for these games, and MW3 won't disappoint. If you were never really a Call of Duty fan, this game won't change your mind. If you love Call of Duty, then you will love this game. To be honest, I am quite shocked the user score for this game is so low, but I can't judge how people feel about a game. This game is worth the money. I know there is a battle between MW3 and Battlefield 3 and being a fan of both games, I would have to choose Battlefield 3 over MW3 by a slim margin because Battlefield 3 feels like it's a complete and total overhaul that is crafted very nicely. MW3 gets an 8/10, Battlefield 3 gets a 9/10. They are both amazing games. Period. Expand

While it's definetely no revolution and is pretty much the same game as MW2, 3 distinguishes itself by rising above the beligirent nonsense that was started with Black Ops my least favorite Call of Duty. Modern Warfare 3 is a triumph in this matter, as it smartly chooses to go back to MW2's multiplayer system, one that feels still fun and enjoyable. What however, is the greatest part of this game? It's just pure fun. Whether your playing the great new survival mode that's clocking in my time or the multiplayer, which is the absolute best its ever been, there's so much to keep you interested in Modern Warfare 3 it would be blasphemy to say different. The multiplayer, the crowning achievement of MW3 is exactly what it set out to be, tweaked awesomeness, changing how unlocking guns work with new "gun ranks", and new playlists like "Kill Confirmed" help keep variety flowing in the game's veins. The single player campaign is actually quite good, while very short, the game still offers up the same hollywood style set pieces and epicness the series has been known for, and offers an ending that wraps up almost everything. Spec Ops however is my favorite thing about MW3. The new survival mode is amazing fun and addictive. The only huge problems are the lack of new graphical content which is enraging many players and should. The game is still running on the CoD4 engine, one that has met its age, and shows it. The only other problems I have are with the story, and I won't spoil any of those, so in the end, Modern Warfare 3 is no revolution, but its a damn fun game, and I don't think I need to say why. 8/10

However, I did not buy this game. I bought battlefield 3, and I borrowed this from a friend. The first thing I did was play the campaign, as I always do. Being a veteran of past call of dutys, I fell right into it and had a great time, the graphics haven't changed much in terms of cell shading and textures, but there is much more scale and the amount of onscreen action almost rivaled killzone 3, and it runs at a nice framerate like all cods and the gunplay is still good. The campaign is simply non-stop adrenaline, and the devs did a nice job of finishing the story. The spec ops missions are a blast. Play them with a friend is the best way to go and the survival mode is simply brilliant. Giving money to your alley, calling in AI allies, and dropping airstrikes, was, in my opinion, a better experience than nazi zombies. In all, it doesn't make that many advances for the genre, but I believe that it is a worthy sequel and that infinity ward and sledgehammer games have a bright future ahead of them. I don't know about the multiplayer, as my live membership is gone and I play on psn, but I would stick to battlefield or killzone or whatever you favor for your online warfare. Expand

Not many games give you exciting cinematic experiences like COD, so each game feels refreshing. Graphically the game looks really good also. Everything looks clean and the amount of action that is going on around you is amazing. Plus it all runs at 60fps as well. Multiplayer is also better then ever. Nothing major has been added but that doesn't stop the game from being addictive. It has that 'just one more go' vibe to it which means once you start playing it's hard to put down. They should have the objective scores on the score board not just kills and deaths. In some games modes they really mean nothing and therefore are a pointless stat to have. The hate on for this game is basically because it has become popular and when things become popular people have to hate on them. If you enjoyed the other CoD MW games you'll enjoy this one. Nothing ground breaking but still lots of fun. Expand

I've played every COD that has been released, and I can see where people feel this is more MW2.5 than MW3. Some of the maps have that "I've been here before" feel to it, so some of the interaction feels a bit rehashed. The campaign is pretty standard as far as COD goes...very Bay-esque, but a fun time killer when you don't feel like multiplayer. There are some changes that I really do like, and I feel deserve praise. I like the fact that your weapons level up separately from you character, so you don't have to tie up a perk slot to have multiple attachments. I find surpressors a MUST in COD...and the fact that I can add range to my surpressed UMP45 is a HUGE perk in my mind. The addition of the "Specialist" and "Support" strike packages is good for a change of pace...and I do find myself tinkering with them depending on my gameplay. Overall this game is very fun to play, and that goes a long way in my review, but this game is nowhere near perfect...8.0. Expand

MW3 seems to be the best game for a FPS this season. BF3 seems to be weeping on that fact their Multiplayer lags and runs at 30 fps.... 60 for the WIN!

MW3 core game modes and play are great, I feel they did play it a bit safe and stuck with what works which makes this game solid and fun to play. Why stray away from a formula that works and produces? And the new Spec Ops is refreshing to play.

All these negative reviews must be from BF3 fanboys or something. I find it suspect that EVERYONE went out and got the game at midnight, or early on 11/8 and despises it because it's the same as the other games.

Um.. what? Newsflash. ALL of these Modern Warfare games have been the same. If you played MW2, which was basically the same as MW1.. why would you expect innovation at this point?

Um.. what? Newsflash. ALL of these Modern Warfare games have been the same. If you played MW2, which was basically the same as MW1.. why would you expect innovation at this point? And yet, you still ran out and bought the game. Congrats. You just told IW and Activision that you'll buy the game regardless of what's inside the case. I'm sure you'll be picking up MW4 at launch as well, just to complain about it some more.

I don't get it. Anyway.. good game. Nothing innovative, sure. But it's enjoyable. Really, at this point, they really are just glorified map packs, but I don't mind. I play each game pretty religiously until the next one is out. I like the feel of the guns, and the new multiplayer modes are fun. The only complaint I can think of is that the maps are maybe too small and cramped.

Hmmm no negative reviews from critics... maybe that says something about the game. Dont listen to the whiney kids who were expecting something revolutionary. This game is solid and a lot of fun, just like the rest.

This fantastic amount of "mob-rage" for CoD is astounding, with most people complaining of the game resembling each previous iteration, with no new innovation, as though it were truly the case that gamers always clamor for innovation. In contrast, let's look at the average review score of some other franchises that rarely change their formula, shall we? For instance, Dynasty Warriors, which has barely changed at all since it first arrived on the PS2, holds around an 8-9 user review score. This same score is held by the Harvest Moon/Rune Factory/Innocent Life games, all eight billion versions of them. It's absolutely ludicrous the amount of force-fed hate that spews out of some of these "reviews," honestly. MW3 has not made huge advances over the original formula, and why should it? It would be fiscally irresponsible for Activision to let such a money-maker change the formula, anyway. CoD smashes sales records every year, and that speaks so much louder than 645 generic, **** reviews. It's not reinventing the wheel, because the wheel works just fine the way it is. Expand

People let there feelings get in the way when they "review" this game. If MW3 came out 2 years, it would have won GOTY with ease. Problem is though, it is now the third game in the series that uses the same game engine. It gonna have u going back to it all the time, no matter who you are. The single player campaign isn't half-bad, with its moments, but at the end its something we've come to expect. I think most people are upset that they are shelling out 65$ for a similar game. But i would rather do that, then waste it on a **** game that had this huge hype. COD did not live up to the hype because it simply could not. the new developers had to play it safe and the small tweaks are welcomed. overall, its a fun game that we will all enjoy. but it will be nothing where we stop and say, "wow that was a fantastic game." Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
