Just not what I expected at all... All I feel that was new to this game were the different strike packages you can use which most people use support... Specialist is just a waste in my opinion and assault is just if you want to play mw2 again... I agree with everyone when calling this game mw2.5

Theres also nothing new or groundbreaking in mp killstreaks are still killstreaks no matter how you twist it, same goes for leveling weapons, they might aswell have kept the cash system from black ops.

I have little sympathy for games that call them selves sequels yet do NOTHING to heighten the experience from before- are game companies not wanting to take any more risks? there is the usual abundance of titles rallying for that almighty Game of the Year, forking down 60 bucks annually for the exact game as before just seems wrong.

Please do yourself a favor and save you $100 for something else you might want because this game is terrible. I had high hopes for this game after Black Ops was so bad but this game is unbelievably worse than Black Ops. Multiplayer is absolute garbage and only looks to make you angry rather than get any enjoyment out of it. If it is not the terrible lag getting you killed, it is the the terrible spawns. Just imagine killing someone only to have him spawn right behind you and shoot you in the back. Sound like fun? Then there is the $50 rip off that is Call Of Duty Elite, the service does not work! It is a glitchy, buggy mess, and they can't fix it.

On a positive note I guess I won't be wasting any time playing this game, which is probably a good thing.

Stop your Twitter groveling Glen Schofield, your game deserves a "0", MW3 and Activision DESERVE it for disappointing MILLIONS of fans who were devoted countless single-player and multi-player hours into the Modern Warfare series to give us this rushed, tacked-on, copy-cat, sloppy, un-inventive, game that you dare to slap the "Call of Duty" mark on it. A little history about me: I've dropped easily hundreds of hours into MW2 multiplayer until all the hackers, quick-scopers, and all sorts of crap started showing up without a single patch to balance or fix the game and I dropped MW2, ticked beyond belief, and went to Battlefield instead. Black Ops brought me back with innovative and different feel and Zombies zombies zombies.
Now here comes MW3, like your ex-wife/girlfriend who comes back into your life after so many years after your bitter break-up, now all dressed up in sexy clothing and make-up trying to seduce you back...and when you fall for the trap...BAM, you realize you got played...underneath it all you realize that you're dealing with the same BS that made you hate the wench in the first place!! That was the feeling I had when playing my first hours of both Single Player and Multi-Player.

Some Lowpoints, to name a few: -- Lame single player campaign - "Lets chase Makarov around the globe, again and again storyline", Sequences are all rehash of MW2 sequences: bang bang, kill kill, sneak sneak, cheap deaths, many innocents die but we don't care, rehash AC-130 sequence, run run, someone "important" dies, boo hoo (not really), game over...all in a matter of a handful of hours where you simply...just...don't...care. -- Multi-Player - Spec Ops, rehash of single player, nuff said. Multi-player - Within THIRTY MINUTES of my experience, I got "quick scoped" over and OVER again!!??? ARRGHH!!! W...T...H!?? The cheap tricks are back!!?? They obviously DID NOT listen to the fans at all = Activision does not care about you. Strike packages are lame, especially the Support package which still REQUIRES kills to "support" your team. Kill streaks happen every 2 seconds with no breathing room. -- Multi-player maps are about 50% SMALLER in size it seems, where spawn-and-die is the recurring theme. There are no dynamics or good feel about ANY map that I have tried with any game type, and Kill Confirmed is a lame tack-on and forgettable. Weapon balancing is terrible no matter how you think about it.

In summary, my buddies and I who ran and pwned both MW2 and Black Ops multi-player literally STOPPED playing after just two hours of BS on MW3 multi-player. We all also play BF3 and HANDS-DOWN find that it is a better, more in-depth experience that MW3 would ever HOPE to achieve. So Glen Schofield, you've made half a billion dollars off of your loyal and devoted fans, and yet here on Metacritic your game stands at a lowly 3 score. Take your money and run, Infinity Ward got it right when it left Activision in the first place.

This game brings nothing new to the series and nothing new to gaming in general. The campaign is weak and often attempts emotional cheapshots that, if reasonably analysed, are there to spark controversy from the media and not any emotion. The reason i have given this game a 2/10 and not a 1/10 is because of the new survival mode in spec ops. It is slightly fun but nothing we have not seen from other games such as the Gears of War horde mode. Now to the multiplayer. Graphics remain unchanged from Modern Warfare 2, the previous call of duty. The core mechanics have not changed. These elements combined give the player a rehashed and unchanged experience from Modern Warfare 2. Buildings, guns, kill/pointstreaks have even been used from previous call of duty's. Essentially, this game shows a several companies, led by Activision, milking a series until it can no longer be milked. When i say milked i mean making the same game over and over until the gaming community and critic's become aware of this money grab that is call of duty. This has not happened, unfortunatly. We are being sold a disgrace to gaming in general which mocks our intelligence. Expand

The graphics can be excused as nobody expected anything more than black ops. The Audio is so poorly mixed, my ASTRO A40's sound like a cheap pair of Turtle Beach XLC's. Black Ops had varied recoil pending on different gun types, MW3 has next to no difference in gun types. Weapon perks are the stupidest things implemented in a game since the Wii remote. An MP5 only shoots so far, why add something to allow it to shoot further? Kill streaks used to be just that - KILL streaks. Even the worst player can get a spy plane on COD4/BOp's, it's only 3 kills. Now U can only capture a few objectives and you've gained reward. This makes sense, but if you die, this should reset. COD 4 redifined innovation and took the world by storm. MW2 was a mistake that the world could've done without and MW3 is the icing on the cake for IW and the reverse of progress. Treyarch got it right, in evey way. IW had sat back in their gold office chairs and smoked some mind altering drug and produced nothing but rubbish. Oh COD: Mw2 got a 60 dollar dlc i think ill pass on it. Don't repackage the same game sell it for $60 and expect people to be happy. Also why did you decide to award noobs we dont need the guy that gets 5 kills over 5 different lives to get a killstreak.

Black ops is better than this game in graphics and everthing else. You cant dive to prone,no 4 player co op, and everybody can get gold guns at the start and the killstreaks sucks. SORRiEST GAME I EVER PLAYED....

Given the enormous teaser trailers released via the internet and Xbox Live, I had expected that MW3 would have a huge focus on an epic global campaign mode. I didn't expect much out of the multiplayer feature of the game. Once a franchise like this hits it's stride, you can only reinvent the wheel so many times. However, the product I ended up taking home for $60, after playing through, felt like more of an insult than a gaming experience. First off, the campaign mode was ridiculously short, given the expectations laid down by Infinity Ward's marketing team. I was looking forward to a crazy World War III scenario. At the very least, I was hoping that the team would make it to Moscow. Instead, what I got was a bunch of short-ish and uninteresting Delta Force situations that took me less than 4 hours to shoot my way through. To frame it in a different context...I felt like MW 2 was one of the best first person shooters ever made, in addition to having a great anti-war message. MW 3 just felt like a game hellbent on cruise control. Instead of having a bunch of Special Ops missions, I would much rather have seen more effort and time put into the Campaign mode. I don't care about a bunch of little missions (whose difficulty is through the roof, I suppose, to give you the illusion of more game hours,) and while I thought the Survival mode was a nice touch, I would've gladly given it up for the same reasons. The developing team really screwed the pooch here, attempting to be a jack of all trades and a master of none. Of course, Infinity Ward probably knew at this point that all they needed to do is make Multiplayer good and people wouldn't complain. So that's what they put more focus on than anything...but by "focus", I only mean "a few new features and a handful of features ripped from Call of Duty: Black Ops." But they did launch the Elite app, which allows them to take your money a little early for content that nobody cares about. My guess is that they knew that they didn't have to work as hard to make a quality game, since this one wraps up the story of the last two, and people would buy it anyway in anticipation. As far as game mechanics for Multiplayer go...more of the same. I think I actually preferred the currency system of Black Ops, so I don't have to grind to level up weapons. I'd rather earn XP and buy them. As a casual gamer, I have no desire to spend 8 to 16 hours on Xbox Live so that I can have a hybrid sight for my AK 47. (I will say that the hybrid sight was a cool new addition, but one among very few.) The divide and conquer approach to the Perks / Weapon Leveling system was unnecessary and stupid. I would've been happy with it being fine the way it was. In closing, I'm sure a lot of time, money, and hard work went into developing this game. I'm sure that hours were tirelessly spent by Infinity Ward's development team trying to figure out how to squeeze fresh blood from an already dried up and overused turnip. Either that, or they wasted a bunch of time on two useless game modes while neglecting the Campaign mode, switching a few features around on Multiplayer, and pouring millions of dollars into promoting a game with a lackluster plot, redundant features to the last two games, and no passion whatsoever. It didn't come. After several frustrating nights I have pretty much stopped playing MW3 and have soley played battlefield 3. MW 3 is so tight that pretty much everybody camps with silenced sub guns. We all know that the majority of COD fans buy the games nowadays for the multiplayer experience that COD 4 pioneered. I consider myself and my friends to be a pretty well skilled group of players who have spent alot of time and money on these games. All of them until Modern Warfare 3 would have recieved a moderate to high score from me. But I do not feel as if Sledgehammer, or IW really listened to the gaming community before they made this game. If they had, there would have been a clear and tangible difference to the newest addition. Sure we all know that the game is going to be VERY similar to the others. We pay for the game knowing this. But we ALL expect each and every new addition to be an improvement on the last games. With so many COD's before Modern Warfare 3, there simply is no excuse for the plethora of issues this game has. Sure, at times, it is a fun game. But when entire groups of players 6 or more in numbers are getting fed up and going back to Modern Warfare 2 or even Black Ops, ( God Forbid), Sledgehammer, IW, this is a problem. I have both Modern Warfare 3, and Battlefield 3 and I can honestly say I have had more fun, and less frustration playing battlefield 3, even without people I know, than I have Modern Warfare 3. The way I see these games, they are an investment. And after 300$ for all three Modern Warfare games and Black Ops, (not to mention DLC for all of them), I am beginning to think I have invested in the wrong game to provide me my fun. To the makers of EVERY Call of Duty game: Thank You, it has been a wild ride. But we are growing apart. I just cant stay in a relationship where I give and give and give, and you take and take and take without any concern for my opinion on the matter. Save yourself the heartache of a lost 60$.

These changes would have been easy to include and really don't push the envelope very far into the land of "fixing what ain't broke". This latest effort from Activision and Infinity Ward shows laziness and greed. They made a far inferior game (super-tight maps with ridiculously frenetic pacing / outdated HALO type game play / boring leveling system) and play it off like the best thing ever. We are suckers for buying this stuff. With the resources they had, they really could have moved the bar up...instead they just ignored the bar altogether...or maybe, the developers are still hanging out at the bar, I don't know. The game is very similar to MWF2, however the feel of the game is a bit different. Firstly, the maps do make it more flowing, as promised, which does make the game a bit more exciting, but really recycled weapons and a small handful editions don't deliver enough. Furthermore, the mechanics on the game need a serious revamp. It feels like its trying to be realistic, and then it just slaps you in the face in certain parts with its un realism. One of the more popular aspects of the game jumps to mind, I am referring, of course, to quick scoping. Unfortunately it is a big chunk of the problem with the game, because it is so popular. There is nothing realistic about quick scoping, or in fact the way sniping is done in game. Most of the elements of the sniper rifle need to be looked at a lot. Also, we were promised 'more equal weapons' so people wouldn't just choose the UMP45 silenced and win. On most counts, they have made fairly equal weapons, yet some of them just jump out as being far too powerful, or far too weak. To name 1, the FMG9, akimbo with steady aim is a near unbeatable combination, and sucks a lot of the fun away from the game when faced with an opponent using them. Another aspect of the game, and one of the most horrendous is knifing. I don't know what happened between MWF2 and this, but knifing has just failed miserably. The complete inconsistency of this mechanic makes it un-usable, and it is suicide to even attempt knifing someone. There are no shining qualities of this game that make me feel amazed by it, there are some good ones, like flowing maps and new game modes (Kill confirmed) that make the game bare-able, but if you are looking to play a good multi-player first person shooter, go and buy Modern Warfare 2. Cod 2 was exciting it had a new engine and looked great, cod 3 was adding new things to the game, like sprint and updated multiplayer. Cod4 comes out and its simply amazing, the campaign was fantastic story was gripping and the multiplayer was a stand alone feat! then Cod WaW was just getting better! it added a new co-op mode where you could play parts of the campaign online co-op! it had all the same multiplayer with updates to it to make it better for the players, and finally it had Zombies which is one of the biggest things Cod has ever had a series...now this may just be me...but it went downhill from here. Mw2 is released to one of the biggest mass audiences ever, it came out amaizingly well the story was gripping and full of twists and turns. the multiplayer was updated for more arcade and less realistic but funner, you could hop on and feel like you did something, the co-op was gone in zombies and campaign but it was still there for spec-ops where you try to do different things so you can complete objectives but the problem was it was rushed. where cod 4 and waw had had about 4 years to be made mw2 had only 2 years. this ment that there were glitches. lots of glitches. it had overpowered shotguns that kill in 1 hit from 20 feet, the rpgs with the huge 30 foot explosive kill radius, dual glocks with overpowered it was horrendous to all who saw it. people began to turn away from Cod, and this was bad. Blackops. This game added so much to the series. it had its own type no visuals game in it, a updated zombies mode, their was an online where you could challenge people for money to use to buy new items. you had a money system where you didnt have to work to upgrade a gun or rank up to a perk you just buy them and customization was at an all time high. there were about 100 gun camos, emblems were completely customizable, the red dot sights on guns were customizable too! it had an offline mode where you could fight aginist Bots and rank up there, and it added a theater mode where you could watch old games and even a new ability to have 2 people play online from the same xbox/ps3!. it even had a new top down acrade game! now while the graphics were getting only slowly better there were only a few good leaps and mw2/bo had them. even black ops added an new movement ability! you could swan dive around places! it was good fun and it felt like a new game. mw3. let me level with you all i am probably biased about this game but its with good reason. you see how all the other games had updates and added more to the game the thing is mw3 didnt. it changed the multiplayer in only small tweaks, like killstreaks per class now but thats all i can really see. it actually took most customization away like most camos, red dots, and customization for emblems in favor of mw2 style. the graphics had not changed the story was solid but most of them are in cod games, the co-op was only the same spec ops but it had a new ranking system for the new gametype called "survival" which was basically zombies but people had guns. it is fun and changes a lot but not completely original or that fun when multiplayer comes looming about. the multiplayer maps are not diverse, they are more of the same, the guns feel really bad and not realistic, not much updating but enough to show a little something. thats just how the game is and i do not see how it can truly be considered to be a new game. it is merely an expansion pack. thats all i see. if you have any other opinions thats for you but this is how i see the series as a whole. black ops 2 will hopefully save cod. For some reason everyone runs much faster and stiffer which leads to choppy almost lag like movement that you have to aim at when trying to shoot your opponent I used to hate modern warfare 2 because of the same reasons but i recently went back and played modern warfare 2 and it actually plays better. Overall this game is extremely bad and in my opinion it has ruined the franchise. I have decided to never by another call of duty. The critics need to play the game under regular average player conditions to give more accurate reviews because i cannot understand why they graded this game so absurdly high. Its so sad really since the first modern warfare was so balanced and solid. it was so near to perfection that everyone just kept buying the sequels. But guess what? This isn't call of duty 4. The original MW was a breakthrough, it had great story and gameplay, what I didn't expect however was that same game to be released again two years later with litle more than a texture pack and some campaign DLC. Considering this my attitude to MW2, imagine my surprize when the thinking caps down at Activision went into over drive and made MW3. Once again all I can say is wow thats a nice texture pack and DLC. Fair enough the mutiplayer is fun, but its no different from the first two. The only thing worth a penny in the call of duty series right now is the Zombies mini-game, considering a lack of that in this title to me it is worthless. Want some fun, go out and buy something you have never played before, because in about ten years time your going to look at your game collection and realised that for those ten years you spent just over £1000 on the same game every single year.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright, let me be clear, if this was an independent game I would give it a 4 or 5 but as a closing game in a trilogy it comes with certain expectations. Those were not met. at all. MW2 was bad, but not anywhere near the level that this game was. Just to hit a few quick points: a coordinated simultaneous terrorist attack across all of Europe, a Russian Navy, a naval invasion of NYC, kidnapping the presidents daughter to coerce him (there are safeguards against this in the Russian laws), the peace treaty being signed with no repercussions, the vigilante justice of Makarov (he would be captured, tried, and hung), the unbalanced multiplayer, the underpowered airbased killstreaks, the broken perks, the support killstreaks, awful spawn system, etc. These are all the things wrong with the game, I don't feel like typing for 20 minutes to elaborate, but look them up if you need to. I played the first COD EVER (PC game originally) and the game was wonderful... After the WWII series, there came MW1, fantastic! Was a great game. Then came the crappy games, MW2, total let down. Now MW3, what to say, well! Repetitive Multiplayer gameplay, the game styles are the SAME, graphics are 3-4 years old (OUTDATED), maps are crappy, i could do better on the Black Ops map Editor and then import it to XBOX360. This game is not the Call of Duty series i remember. It is now a money trap for kids. It is a money machine. All they want is easily earned money. Map Packs they are making you pay for 15$ is not even worth a 3$. The time it takes to create them is about 2 days. They really steal people. Infinity Ward saddens me, since MW2. Not a joke! Black Ops was crappy, and was still better than MW3? You're kidding me? This game is not a 2011 game. It is a 2009 quality game. Please, do not buy. Get Battlefield 3, which is QUALITY level game. Also there is Medal of Honor, which is very good for the Campaign. Like i said, i am not a fanboy, Battlefield 3 was the first Battlefield i EVER played.. One statement that sums up the goal of good game design is, "easy to learn, hard to master". Well, this game sure got the first part right. Anyone can pick up a controller, spam grenades, spray blindly, and instakill people with a knife in a 'shooting' game and do well. MW3 took every flaw that the recent CoD games have been plagued with and pushed them to their limits. The perks are broken, there are deathstreaks, there are killstreaks that one can die and still get, the guns fire quickly, there's tons of aim assist, and one's aim is thrown off wildly when shot by these spray-happy weapons. There is no depth to this game. Activision knows that a new CoD game needs to be pumped out every year, because these games simply have no staying power. Games like CS and Quake have staying power, because one could play for years without hitting any kind of ceiling. This is why CS has as many players as MW3 over a decade later. This game is perfect for studying if you're a dev and you're interesting in making an FPS game. If one has intimate knowledge of MW3's mechanics, then he knows exactly what not to include in an FPS. I could easily write an encyclopedia detailing the flaws in this product, but I think I'll end the review here and go play some Counter-Strike instead. Expand

However, as I and many other people came to find out , It wasn't. Modern Warfare 3 turned out to be a huge disappointment to the fans of previous call of duty games. As far as I can see, all of the "new" additions they added to the multiplayer were just things stolen from other games, especially the game "Homefront", such as the point streak system and many of the new kill streaks(ballistics vests, recon drones, assault drones, reaper drones, etc.). Once you get passed these additions, you can see that Modern Warfare 3 is really just the evil twin of the previous Modern Warfare game. It is call of duty at the core, but it is clear that Infinity Ward/Activision isn't trying to make the games for the fans, but only for the money. The only reason to play this instead of the last two CoD releases is that there is a certain portion of fellow CoD gamers that have moved on to this release and you want to keep playing with those gamers, learning new maps and slightly different builds just to keep things fresh. However, I recommend trying different types of games altogether if you think mastering MW3 is as fun, if even worth your time, compared to playing MW2 or BlackOps some more. CoD has just become a foregone conclusion to me. Every year we will see some new twist on it that keeps the revenue train rolling but like a girlfriend you've grown tired of over time, it doesn't matter how many different positions or costumes they try on, things get stale and depressing until both parties move on with their lives. Modern Warfare 3 is a completely ripoff of a game that throws together a dull and plain campaign and a painfully bad multiplayer. The multilayer mode is quite weak: Few maps, glitches and not many new stuff has been added to make the game stand out from the earlier episodes. The priceI am disappointed about this game. same **** every year.... Bad spawns, bad hit detection, OP weapons, OP Killstreaks/perks.... Multiplayer sucks big time!!

Story is meh, spec ops okay, survival is really good fun for awhile!

This CoD franchise seriously declined after CoD MW1. I used to enjoy playing CoD but when they started making the same game again and again and again I gave up on the franchise.

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
