A visual treat; even more so than its immensely popular "Geometry Wars." The tweaked classic tracks may not be for everyone, but at least they tie into the gameplay, making Boom Boom Rocket a very unique offering in the ever-surprising lineup of Xbox Live Arcade games.
-
Official Xbox MagazineTaste in music is always a personal thing, but we absolutely love Boom Boom's 10 modern takes on famous classical music, which veer from ska to disco to electronica and good 'ol metal. [June 2007, p.70]
-
Definitely a fun game with a good choice of songs so far. The single player is challenging while the multiplayer creates a lot fun for you and your friends. The cost of 800 Microsoft Points is a bit high.
-
Ultimately Boom Boom Rocket achieves what it set out to do without any noticeably downsides – except, of course, that what it sets out to do is barely different from what has been done many times before; instead of a gimmicky peripheral, it entertains with mesmerising imagery.
-
Despite being sandwiched between two high-profile music games, Boom Boom Rocket offers a unique and vibrant gameplay experience that is really unmatched by anything else out there.
-
While it never struggles to be entertaining, it never really stands out either, and ultimately proves rather forgettable. Worth a go, then, but you wouldn't write songs about it.
-
Good but not great, likeable but not loveable, somewhat but not terribly addictive, and doesn't drive home that memorable soundtrack to keep you around for weeks. Boom Boom Rocket is worth your while, but not too much of your while.
-
At around $10 real dollars (800 Microsoft Points), Boom Boom Rocket does offer a somewhat satisfying pick-up-and-play experience that some folks will be happy to have on hand, and that can be quite theraputic. But many others will get all the enjoyment they need out of BBR by simply downloading the free demo.
-
If you are looking for a good musical game and don’t want to spend 90 bucks, Boom Boom Rocket is worth checking out.
-
Official Xbox Magazine UKThe sad thing about BBR is the lack of variety. [June 2007, p.97]
-
X-ONE Magazine UKYou'll certainly enjoy it, but unlike a gobstopper, it's not going to last you forever. [Issue#20, p.116]
-
Another excellent and approachable leaderboard-chasing romp through colourfully lit cityscapes with an upbeat tempo soundtrack. Though it's perhaps a little short-lived due to the limited tracks currently available, it's a lot of fun while it lasts.
-
The simplistic nature of Boom Boom Rocket makes it easy to pick up and enjoy in brief chunks, but it's also roughly like playing "Dance Dance Revolution" with the controller instead of a dance mat, which, unsurprisingly, isn't too much fun.
-
A barebones rhythm game that focuses more on visuals than it does on outstanding music, which should always come first in this genre. Downloadable content in the future will help, but unless it offers better music or a significantly different game mode, only the diehard rhythm gamers will care.
-
Hardcore GamerThe music isn't bad and the gameplay is fun enough, but the track list is fairly short with only ten pieces. [June 2007, p.69]
-
netjakWhile ten stages is a decent amount for the Arcade, they get old fast, and even the old PS1 DDR games offered close to twice as many tracks. The music is great and the visuals impressive; but those do not a game make.
-
One of those rhythm games like "Guitar Hero" and "Dance Dance Revolution," minus the depth, size, playability, replayability, scope, addictiveness or polish of either of those two games. Granted, it's an arcade title, but at 800 points you expect to get a little more boom boom for your buck.
-
For 800 points, a rhythm game that has all the rhythmic sense of Urkel on the dance floor is a poor choice. Even if it had the rhythm it takes to call itself a rhythm game, the lack of sonic depth would make this a shallow title. If a shallow broken rhythm game sounds like your cup of tea, knock yourself out.
-
Edge MagazineBoom Boom Rocket is marking time rather than feeling the rhythm, and that’s not enough to set Live Arcade’s skies alight. [June 2007, p.88]
