It’s got some rough edges visually, but also has some striking shots that will dazzle thanks to impressive lighting effects and features the same kind of music that made the other Arkham games so atmospheric.

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - Deluxe Edition can be a fun game if you're able to get past the stumbling blocks.

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate combines the series’ trademark combat and exploration and tosses them into a sidescrolling platformer with surprisingly pleasant results.

The home consoles and PC editions of Batman Arkham Asylum: Blackgate feel as good as the PS Vita version, with overhauled graphics and audio, and some minor gameplay additions.

Blackgate succeeds in channeling Arkham's open-world structure into a 2.5D format, but runs into pacing issues and hackneyed dialogue along the way. [July 2014, p.70]

Not so much a misfire as misplaced. [June 2014, p.76]

The move to a 2.5D style isn’t exactly sloppy so much as unimaginative and while it entertains in bursts, it’s too often a dull addition to the series.

With tighter, arcade-style combat, a more interesting environment, and less time-wasting tedium in the exploration sections, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate could have been an entertaining Metroidvania game. As it is, it's a wholly middling experience.

All Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate is (aside from a terrible name that feels super stitched together) is a boring game in a great franchise that reminds you how to not translate a game from 3D to 2D.

I did not compare this at all to the Arkham main line games but for some reason, this just did not work for me as much as I wanted to. I could not finish it but it still has nice graphics and easy controllers to handle. Full Review »
