Average attempt at reviving the buggy game that still has not been fixed.I would suggest only buying this game and DLC if you are a true batman fan.The story seems to change tone and pace too much for me to get REALLY into it,I have always liked Batman but have found myself to like Superman better,if that negates my opinion for you so be it.

Better than expected, this has a lot of cool ideas and some really bad ones. It is a very different game that focuses on different things than the other games of the series. It is a very different game that focuses on different things than the other games of the series. The exploration is the big protagonist here. The first playthrough is frustrating because of the bad map design that doesn't help much. On the second and third playthroughs I managed to acknowledge the path of the designers' choice and felt much better. Actually, when you learn the ropes and the paths of the prison, it becomes a quite satisfying game.

The graphics are below average, though some of the character designs resemble the other games. It does quite well though on some of the gameplay aspects. The exploration when you learn the prison can be fun since you have to memorize each location. The secrets are quite well hidden requiring one, some all of your gadgets making it true to the genre and finally the bossfights beside the few that rely on actual fist-fighting are intuitive. Much more than the fights in AC or Origins. True to the first game, you have to discover the method you have to use to beat each boss and that is the one thing that this game does great.

I also liked its pacing and the freedom to choose which path (villain) to take first. As I did the ending and the whole game structure. Sadly, some of its worst aspects are the fighting (freeflow combat) and the predator segments. They are nothing like in the main games.

If this game had better presentation (better graphics and real cutscenes) and better combat it could have had a place between its bigger brothers as a different take on the franchise as the genre gameplay fits the hero well. As it is, it has its ups and downs (very bad combat...) making it a quite mediocre game.

The metroidvania formula works, but is not polished.
While backtracking was necessary and rewarding in games like Metroid, Castlevania or, more recently, Shadow Complex, in B:AO Blackgate it felt like an extremely annoying chore.
Plus, it is extremely buggy, and the combat is just a poor excuse to try to mimmick the success of the main games' combat sequences.

I love Batman, I love side scrollers. I did not compare this at all to the Arkham main line games but for some reason, this just did not work for me as much as I wanted to. I could not finish it but it still has nice graphics and easy controllers to handle.

Blackgate succeeds in channeling Arkham's open-world structure into a 2.5D format, but runs into pacing issues and hackneyed dialogue along the way. [July 2014, p.70]

Not so much a misfire as misplaced. [June 2014, p.76]

The move to a 2.5D style isn’t exactly sloppy so much as unimaginative and while it entertains in bursts, it’s too often a dull addition to the series.
