I recently just completed this title after starting it a decade ago (thank you Xbox backwards compatibility). To my surprise it holds up well! However, it does overstay it’s welcome and should have ended two memory segments sooner. Overall I’d say the user reviews are spot on with a 7.6 score (at the time of writing this). Helpful tip: Master counter attacks!

It was just a great idea - you are an assassin and at the same time an ordinary bartender. Switching between time periods; millennium-long worldwide conspiracies; good stealth mechanics and assassinations...

Loved it! It's a great start to the franchise. It does get repetitive, I will admit that, and there's some wonky mechanics but the storyline and characters are a treat.

Cinematic-ally speaking, this is The Matrix meets Kingdom of Heaven. The gameplay mixes the parkour movements from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time with the stealth aspects of Hitman. But after a few hours, you'll find yourself doing the same things over and over again. The lack of mission variety and side diversions seriously hurts the experience. This is one of the most repetitive open-world adventure games you'll ever play. Despite its shortcomings, Assassin's Creed is a joy to play. The concept of the Animus is fascinating, the story is intriguing and the core gameplay is good. I would rate this with an 8.1 out of 10. Expand

A great came that blew a lot of peoples minds away at the time of release. You definitely can see similarities to Ubi-Softs previous hit franchise Prince of Persia, which eventually they said that is how this game started.

The start of an amazing trilogy. However, the first in the series has its faults.

    Pros

    - Graphics are great, environment depict the colonial ages nicely.

    - Climbing all over buildings and racing across roof tops is entertaining.

    - Voice acting is good.

    - The cities are lively and creates a realistic atmosphere. Especially the constant awareness you must have in order to avoid guards. The interesting to see the citizens react to your actions.

    - Silent assassinations are satisfying.

    - The plot is unique. The game makes the player wonder what is going to happen with the ties between the past and the present day assassins and Templars.

    - The story is great. The depth of the plot sets the foundations for a great trilogy.

    Cons

    - Altair (main character) cannot swim. In fact, he dies as he falls in water. As an assassin, it just does not make sense.

    - Missions can get repetitive. Find view points, locate and complete investigations, return to bureau. Rinse and repeat.

    - Minor glitches in some parts of the game. Controls can be a bit imprecise while leaping between objects and during combat.

    - The present day cut-scenes with Desmond and the animus, could have been given more emotion. The characters just seem emotionless except the doctor. Also, there is not much space you can explore in the present day world. All there is, is your bedroom and the animus room.

    - It is difficult to target a specific enemy when they come in large groups.

    - Lack of manual aim for throwing knives makes it impossible to throw knifes at archers on roof tops from the ground.

This video game is very good to be from 2008. It has many limitations, but the story is good, the missions are repeated with some variants. It interferes that the character dies when falling into the water among other things. The final fight is little due to the low budget, but it gives satisfaction to win although that depends as the player perceives it. However, it's a good start to the saga.

A bit underrated game. It lacks some mechanics, but in terms of a story and the setting this is the most consistent and well thought AC game next to Black Flag. The only AC game with some considerable difficulty. On the bad side the game is very repetitive. The story is intensive at the beginning and at the end while the middle of the game is very repetitive. But all the assassinations in the meanwhile are engaging and some scenes are really well made, but again, this is all very repetitive, coming back to the same cities and etc. One thing that annoyed me a lot are those few missions where you fight like 15 enemies at once, thats you nonsense that takes you out of the game and breaks immersion. Visual fidelity is surprisingly good for 10 year old game, it has its charm and a believable world, music is very good too. This game has some serious strengths and is the best out of the series in many regards, but it has some quite meaningful flaws as well. I gave it a 7 at first, but I appreciated it more with time and after playing more games from the series. Expand

Still to this day one of my most favorite games in general and in the series (even though I'd give a 10 to AC2)
I never understood why people complained about the fact that it was repetitive. I liked how it was logical to eavesdrop on people to know about the target it made sense to investigate and made the assassination logical and built a sense of motivation as to the why you are doing

It's one of those rare open world game where I felt deeply connected to the story line and I wanted to dig in more.

I also loved the open world between the cities and racing around with your horse and all. The setting was fantastic and the free runing was just unbelievable at that time! Combat was great and you got a real sense of empowerement being an assassin.

I finished that game 2 times, I got 1000G and I'd love for Ubisoft to release it again on Next gen platforms.

The game tells a story of Desmond Miles - a descendant of Assassins - a secret organisation fighting with Templars. While Assassins strive to preserve freedom - Templars seek to control people. Desmond who lives in modern times is put by Templars into Animus with which he can access genetic memories of his ancestors and re-lives the events happening in the third crusade times.

The game is very atmospheric. The cities you visit during the game are big and extremely atmospheric. It really does feel like a crusader movie. The movement - ability to climb any building, run on the rooftops is very well done. The whole scope of the game does look impress. For the times this was released it is very impressive. Even today it still looks very good and holds its own.

During the game you will kill a number of templars. And while all the tools seem to be present the game feels a bit repetitive. Each mission follows pretty much the same schematic - follow someone and eavesdrop on conversation to learn something, beat someone up, pickpocket someone else. In the end it does not affect the main mission much though. With additional Ubisoft dis tractors - climbing towers to reveal map and so on it's a completionist nightmare. Even more so that the side missions are even more repetitive than the core plot. The main missions at least vary from each other and are really fun to do.

The strength of this game lies within stealth. Blending with the crowd, picking routes to avoid detection to deal the final blow. When executed properly it's really satisfying. The combat is a bit too easy. All you have to do is wait for a queue to counter and you can fight off a hundred men.

The only problem I had was with an XBox controller which for some reason does not work well with the PC version of the game. And some keys are bound in a strange way without ability to re-bind them. Even using community fixes I couldn't get it to work exactly as it should.

The whole story of Desmond Miles is a bit weak - and personally I would prefer for it to be strictly about Altair.

Overall the game still holds up - worth picking up and playing through.

The prototype of the superb ACII. The story doesn't get interesting until the end and the game is quite repetitive. However, it was the beginning of one of the greatest videogame sagas.

  1. Its stunning visual style, high concept story, and wildly open level design are like nothing else, even if too much repetition begins to frustrate in the later hours. It’s a game people will still be talking about five years from now.

It's hard to put the sheer size and brilliance of Assassin's Creed into words. It is an epic game that you have to experience for yourself. I will caution that the game is not for the impatient or the faint of heart. While you can plow through the main storyline in under 20 hours, to truly get every single last shred of gaming goodness, you will probably have to put in twice that number.
  3. With its riveting story, beautiful visuals and surprisingly lifelike world, Assassin's Creed is an incredibly deep, enjoyable game that kept us addicted from beginning to bizarre end.
