A brilliantly designed game. I've never enjoyed myself more--I've never once been disappointed in any aspect--even dying. The controls are tight and intuitive, the level design is top-notch, and the graphics and art-design are superb.

For the first time in months, I've picked up my Wii mote again and begun orchestrating my entertainment one swing at a time. The game works as a platformer wonderfully, the general level design, special levels, new power ups, and challenges, just make you forget your surroundings and love the game.

Dante Peaks, I don't know why you even try. You have obviously never even played the game before. It's people like you who ruin the user ratings for games like this. Sometimes it's nice to see other people's opinion on the game excluding the reviewers, but you're just wasting your time and everyone elses.

I have played this game for over 10 hours and have collected over 60 stars, and I have to say that this game is one of the top 3 games I have played of all time (along with Zelda Ocarina of Time and Super Metroid)! I daydream about it all day...it is that good! It is challenging enough for all ages. If you want to get 121 stars, it will be a genuine challenge! Highly recommended.

This game is truly amazing. Those users who voted in the red have no idea of gaming history, or what it takes for a game to be good. Heck, even the most respected review websites prove them wrong. Don't listen to the Nintendo haters, buy this game. It is worth your time.

Really enjoyable and a very fun game. I do think it has been overated a little bit however, but certainly is the one of the best graphical displays the wii has produced so far. I'm not the biggest Mario fan so maybe thats why my score is below average but definately worth a rental!

Kind of feel like I need to put my foot down on this one. Yeah the game is beautiful, full of fun content and cool ideas but it is just not more fun than Mario 64. I'd give this game a 9.8 The game simply doesn't surpass Super Mario 64, but it comes very very close! This is just my opinion though. I think some of the levels were way too short and not very memorable. The music was great in a few galaxies, but falls very short compared to SM64. 'Dumbed down' lessons or tutorials that are un-necessary (namely, the manta ray part isn't skippable) and the sometimes sluggish or upside down camera is annoying. Super Mario Galaxy is a 3D platformer with a unique difference. Hence the name, Mario's in space. While you could easily dismiss this as a gimmick, that is exactly what it is not. First off, it means that everything looks gorgeous. The Wii isn't HD, so it's amazing Nintendo managed to pull this off (but it would be even better in HD, and that's why I'd like a remake for Wii U). Everywhere, it's cosmos, but that doesn't mean Nintendo have gone for one background and reused it- every galaxy is unique in everything, including looks. Next is music. It's amazing. Recorded by an orchestra, every piece conveys the atmosphere of the galaxy (and, oh, those atmospheres are things to treasure). So that's excellent presentation. Beautiful and always, always unique. But the most important thing that Galaxy introduces is planet-hopping. You can run right round a planet and come back to where you were before. While this seems pointless, in reality it brings a whole new dimension to the platforming, and is used in a variety of clever, different ways. Here's the clever thing: you always use a launch star, which is like a cannon except it's a star(don't ask) to get to another planet. And most levels consist of a few conxecutive planets. The set out of the game is essentially about forty galaxies, each holding a one to six levels, or 'scenarios'. The goal of each is to collect the star at the end. The way to actually reach each galaxy is a bit like Super Mario 64- levels are in different places in your hub, the observatory. Getting to them is annoying. It's not like you get lost- it's just boring getting to them. The good-for-nothing map of the observatory doesn't help either. So each galaxy has a particular theme, and it is always very imaginative. Even the routine desert galaxy is filled with surprises. A lot of the gakaxies have levels with boss fights, and a lot of the themes of the galaxies could be turned into entirely new games themselves. There are loads of new powerups, and they are always required to progress when they appear. So they're not so much power-ups as they are like items in zelda. There's the bee suit, to name just one. Each power gives you unique abilities which are always very cleverly and creatively implemented. Each galaxy usually has one or three normal levels, then maybe a hidden star in one of the levels, and one or two comet levels. Comet levels are special stars that come into galaxies you've cleared as you progress through the game. They give you a particular aim and are always very hard. The downside is when they arrive, they replace all the other levels in that galaxy until you've completed that comet level. There's a spin jump to assist you in Super Mario Galaxy, like a double jump. The camera is perfect, never wondering. My biggest problem is that although there are checkpoints, they're not marked, so you've no idea where you'll respawn if you die. There's also a mode where a second player can assist Mario by collecting star bits(in game currency) for them among other things, but this mode is too limited. Overall, Galaxy is a fantastic game and one of the best if not the best, refreshing plstforners around. Expand

Super Mario Galaxy is the third 3D Super Mario video game, after Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, and the first main series Mario video game to be released for the Nintendo Wii.
The story of the game starts with the star festival that happens every one hundred years where the mushroom kingdom celebrates the arrival of the comet. Princess Peach writes a letter to Mario to invite him to the festival. As Mario reaches the castle, Bowser attacks the town and uproots the earth around the castle and lifts it into space, Mario on the mound of earth with the castle gets shot down by Kamek and lands on a planet. There, he meets a few Lumas who lead him to Rosalina and she tells him that Bowser has taken the Princess to the centre of the universe and must retrieve Power Stars to reach there, she also entrusts a Luma simply named 'Luma' into his care.
The primary gameplay of Super Mario Galaxy is similar to that of the previous three dimensional Mario games. Mario can perform various jumps like the backflip and the long jump, the new gameplay mechanic is that because 'Luma' joins Mario, there is the new spin attack move where you can stun enemies, destroy objects and use it to gain additional height and reach higher places. The main hub of the game is the Comet Observatory where you can enter different domes to access different galaxies. Each galaxy has various missions and the goal is to get the power star at the end just like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine The more Power stars you collect, the more galaxies you have access to. However, unlike those games your health capacity is only three instead of eight, you can collect coins to regain health when damaged and also star bits which you can shoot at enemies to stun them.
The level designs of Super Mario Galaxy are interesting ad has a great colour palette. The graphics of the game are also unique as they are spherical planets instead of just flat land and it really plays around with gravity. The soundtrack is also well orchestrated and is very beautiful. The game is very challenging as I had lost many lives because of hazards or tough bosses, this is great for those who are looking for a difficult video game. The controls are responsive as using the 'spin' ability is activated by shaking the Wii remote and it works well. In addition, the game has a cooperative multiplayer mode where the second player is in control of a pointer which can help Mario by stopping enemies and certain hazards, collect and shoot star bits and also help Mario make higher jumps, I fid it useful as it can help to get through the levels easier considering they can be tough. My only nit-pick with the game is that the levels in Super Mario Galaxy are smaller than in its predecessors.
Super Mario Galaxy is truly a masterpiece of the seventh generation of home consoles. With brilliant level designs, graphics, gameplay and a wonderfully made soundtrack, this game is a must-have for the Nintendo Wii owners and if you do not have one, this is one the reasons why you should get one. I give this game a 10/10.

Although it's fairly easy, playing a children's game has never been more enjoyable. Expand

It’s a game that, much like many other entries in the venerable “Super Mario Bros.” franchise, is hailed as a timeless masterpiece, and is often considered one of the greatest video games ever created. Even as the Nintendo Wii was a console that hardcore gamers scoffed at, “Super Mario Galaxy” proved to be an experience worthy of everyone’s attention, and to this day, it’s still a game that commands attention. Having finally beaten the game in its entirety, I can say it is more than worth that attention.
“Super Mario Galaxy” is not just a “standard” 3D “Mario” platformer: the game does have nostalgic odes to the series, and at its core, you might think it’s just another platformer in the series, but Mario’s journey into space is stunning from start to finish. The game works as many Mario games do, but the added elements of space physics and sphere walking are implemented so well, to the point where platforming is even more challenging and rewarding. The level design is also constantly great, and I always felt like I was learning something new or getting an opportunity to try something new. And in a game with this much content, that’s a necessity, so it’s a great thing Nintendo pulls it off with aplomb. Also, presentation-wise, this game is an absolute stunner. Visually, even on a system as underpowered as the original Wii, the game is just brimming with stellar colors and luscious environments that are just a joy to look at, and even as I was reaching the end of the game, I was constantly floored by how stunning the game looked. Even beyond the graphics, though, this game’s soundtrack is in a class of its own. The music in the game is among some of the best I’ve ever experienced in a game, whether it’s going for tensing and triumphant styles, or playing up the emotion with something more mellow and heart-clenching. The music in the game is enough to bring a tear to your eye, it’s absolutely breathtaking, and while storytelling has never been the focus of “Mario” games, I do like several moments of writing in the game, notably in relation to Rosalina’s story, which is quite emotional, and a nice, surprising addition to the game.
I honestly can’t think of many negatives about the game. At worst, a few of Mario’s new suits can be a bit wonky to deal with, and maybe a few of the motion-controlled puzzles take a bit of getting used to. Otherwise, though, those flaws don’t impede on my overall enjoyment of the game.
It’s been said before and I’ll say it again, “Super Mario Galaxy” is a masterpiece. It’s one of the finest Wii games, and one of my personal favorite video games. If you’ve been ignoring the game, please change that. It’s a phenomenal adventure that should be experienced by everyone. And hey, with the game finally seeing a Switch release thanks to the “Super Mario 35th All-Stars” collection, what better time than now to play it?
Final rating: 10 out of 10 “Fantastic”

Mario Galaxy is the game with one of the most beautiful graphics you will see on the Wii by far. Realistic textures of materials, the physics of the water & liquid surfaces, ice, variety of reflections, the sounds, everything is so gorgeously rendered that it is very easy to forget that you are playing in the role of cartoon character.

The game has a nice, kinda rpg-ish structure at it's base, which always leaves you coming back for more, even if just for wandering around the Comet Observatory, chatting up with characters and enjoying the view.

The innovative gravitational physics create mind-blowing gameplay experience that you will easily enjoy even on it's own. The unique usage of the Wiimote controls is done in a perfect and intuitive way, you can feel that they were implemented in the game from the ground up, designing the game around the controls, which makes the game & controls complementing each other in the best way possible. I could never go back to classic thumbstick controls after this, the controls in this game just feel right. The ways in which you can manipulate elements in this game by controling the Wiimote are diverse, full of surprises and the "whoa I can do that??" moments.

I expected a classic "side-by-side" multiplayer co-op when I bought this game and was surprised that it offers kind of a assymetric co-op instead. One player navigates the character in a regular, 3rd person gameplay, and the other player co-ops only in the form of a "fps-ish" kinda way (represented by target pointer), by shooting and collecting starbits, or managing other manageable/moveable elements with the pointer. However, I came to find out after a while that this offers a very nice, layed back socializing experience. Even more so, since in this way, there are plenty of possibilities to fool around and choose to help or troll your main co-player, as opposed to what would probably be a more goal-oriented gameplay if the co-op multiplayer was done in a classic symmetrical way.

Nintendo seriously deserves a medal. Expand

OMG I played this when I didn't have pube hair and im still playing it now, that really says something about this magnificent piece of craftsmanship that is this game. I play so much holy mother of mario fireballs, Its so much fun, and the people who rate it down were either not good at the game or just didn't care to even try to like it as much as they should have. Um...wow. Nintendo just wiped out any Wii haters with Super Mario Galaxy, the amazing Mario title we've all been waiting for since Super Mario 64 (and to a lesser extent, Mario Sunshine). The planet-hopping, galactic exploring, cosmic spinning gameplay is something that I will never forget. The first time you step into the game you are greeted by the endless world of the cosmos. I played this game for five years straight to beat the thing. I don't regret any of it. It has the best graphics of any animated game ever for Mario. It is just spell-binding and mind-blowing when you think of all the other Mario games and wonder how they came up with this. I will never stop complimenting this game.

It was one of the first Mario games I knew about. Other then "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" It was also my cousin's first. I loved it for many years. I played it a lot. It only had a couple issues. Nintendo is great at this. If there will be a 3rd game in this series, I would be glad to play it.

One of the best Mario games ever. The game takes generally hated anti-gravity gimmicks and makes a game that rivals Super Mario World in its quality. The game also has amazing control and masterful music. If you don't have this game, then you must not have a Wii.

Super Mario Galaxy is a great game. It has everything you loved about SM64 but with some twists. The space idea was a great one, it isn't the same old make your way through different worlds to get to Bowser's castle. Instead you get to discover new galaxies and make your way through space. Super Mario Galaxy is a great creation and one of the best games of all time!

a amazing game in a amazing franchise. great graphics, amazing gameplay and a beautiful soundtrack. the only small downside is that it is really easy but that doesn't prevent from being one of the best games ever made.

This is the best game ever! It just is. The graphics are breathtaking, the story is great, the levels and galaxies are creative and very fun, and the music is absolutely beautiful. If you haven't played this game, please play it. This game is just awesome and forever will be, in my opinion, the best game ever.

It's rare to play through a perfect game or one that nears perfection, but Galaxy definitely fits that mold.

Nintendo has crafted a platform game that, while not as technologically pioneering as its grandfather, is, level for level, more fun to play than "Mario 64." [Dec 2007, p.128]

Galaxy proves that Mario matters just as much today as he did 25 years ago, and that makes him one of a kind in this medium. But don't play Galaxy simply because Mario is the timeless godfather of gaming. No, play Galaxy because it's fantastic.
